THE FIRST ANNUAL
G. RAINEY WILLIAMS SYMPOSIUM
IN HONOR OF:
25 YEARS AS FACULTY MEMBER, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA
10 YEARS AS HEAO, DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY
UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER
Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr.
G. Rainey Williams and his
family moved to Oklahoma
City in 1942, a decision that
would establish lasting ties
with Oklahoma. He attended
the University ofTexas (Austin)
for his undergraduate studies
and received an M.D. Degree
in 1951 from Northwestern
University during which time
he was elected to membership
in Alpha Omega Alpha Honor
Medical Society and served as
president of his graduating
class.
Dr. Williams received his
surgical training at The Johns
Hopkins Hospital from 1951 to 1958 under the direction of Dr. Alfred
Blalock. This period was interrupted by a tour of duty in the U.S. Army
Medical Corps as a Surgeon. Upon completion of his training in Baltimore
he was recruited to the Department of Surgery of the University of
Oklahoma by the then current chairman Dr. John Schilling. During this
illustrious career he rose to the rank of Full Professor in 1963 and in 1974
was appOinted as the first John A. Schilling Professor and Head of the
Department of Surgery.
The clinical and research interests of Dr. Williams are varied as
exemplified by his significant contributions in the treatment of congenital
cardiac diseases, extremity reimplantation and reconstruction of
complicated extra-hepatic biliary ductal problems. These interests are
depicted by Dr. Robert Johnson in this symposium's motif. Dr. Williams
was certified by the American Board of Surgery in 1959 and obtained
Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons in 1961. His academic
accomplishments include membership in a large number of surgical and
scientific organizations including the American Surgical Association and
the Southern Surgical Association. Dr. Williams has held leadership roles,
committee chairmanships and other important positions in many of these
organizations including vice-chairmanship of the American Board of
Surgery and Presidency of the Southern Surgical Association. On May
15, 1982 the University bestowed its highest honor upon him, The
Distinguished Service Citation. His civic activities have included
Directorships on the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Oklahoma
City Symphony SOCiety, ONEOK, The Commerce Bank (Oklahoma City)
and Presidency of the Frontiers of Science Foundation of Oklahoma and
the Board of Trustees of Casady School.
Of all these achievements none ranks higher than his selection of
Martha Vose as his loving wife. Martha and Rainey have four children:
Bruce, Alden, Ellen and Rainey and are the proud grandparents of Richard
and Bruce. This symposium is dedicated to his 25 years of service to
the University of Oklahoma, to those students, residents and patients who
have benefited from his teaching , counsel and surgical excellence.
