Location: Horry Georgetown Technical College Myrtle Beach Campus There are several defining moments or moments of truth that can make or break every service transaction. To successfully navigate these moments of truth, it’s important for service organizations – and specifically customer service leaders – to add value to a customer’s experience by creating and implementing strong, clearly defined service standards. To implement effective standards and strategies, it is crucial that you stay attuned to customer needs and expectation, building a dynamic, adaptive service strategy based on input such as market research and customer feedback. This 4 MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com series of courses explores strategies used to shape the direction of customer service in your organization, including defining moments of truth, creation and implementation of quantifiable service standards, and methods of evolving your customer strategy to meet the changing needs of your customers. 1) The Customer Service Professional (July 10) It costs a business much more to acquire a new customer than it does to retain an existing one. So it makes sense that a business must do everything it can to support and satisfy existing customers. Today’s customer service representatives have vital roles to play in ensuring customers’ needs are addressed in an effective, efficient manner. This course will familiarize the individual with customer service representative best practices. 2) Customer Service Process and Procedures (July 17) Failing to realize the importance of customer service and effective complaint handling leads to increasingly dissatisfied customers. Organizations need to be able to address the needs of customers in an effective and efficient manner. This course is intended to show the proper procedures and processes needed to provide effective customer service: how to properly support a customer, how to provide accurate documentation, and how to handle difficult customers. This course helps to prepare learners to work in a customer support center and help desk environment. 3) Customer Service Communications Skills (July 24) Effective communication is essential to the success of customer-oriented business. Each customer will have their own style of communication as well as an emotional response to contacting a support center. In order to effectively communicate, the customer service professional must understand how to adapt to these different styles and emotion before the customer’s problems can be dealt with. This course explains how to adapt to the different communication types and identifies the common emotions that customers experience when contacting customer support. Measuring your marketing effectiveness As marketers, we like to think that we are the backbone of any business or brand. In most cases it is indeed true. A thriving business or brand is a strategically marketed one. Without strategic marketing efforts, most products or services would not reach their optimum level of awareness or earning potential. However, all the marketing in the world will not spell success without proper measurement and evaluation of its effectiveness. Most of us want to know what we’ve really “gotten” out of our marketing investment. What is our return? Did we gain or lose from our valuable investment? An article on how to measure your return on investment in MarketingProfs.com by Jim Bergeson states, “Marketers are on the hook. Measuring ROI on each marketing activity is critical to proving our effectiveness and competing for scarce resources. … Measuring ROI effectively will help marketers add value to their organizations and attract their fair share of resources.” Some key points to remember when measuring the ROI of your marketing endeavors are easy to remember. 1. Track every call, email, ad response, etc. Know where your new customer found you. Ask your customer, “How did you hear about us.” This is one of the oldest and best ways to find out if your efforts are working. 2. Assign unique URLs and phone numbers to each banner ad, print ad, direct mail piece or other outlet you may choose. Unique URLs are easily evaluated through Google Analytics. Plus, other details such as location and browser type are available. The opportunity for information gathering is endless. 3. Directly correlate your revenue to a particular marketing campaign. If you’re able, track your earnings via source. Did the person who visited your specific URL make a purchase? This is gold to the savvy marketer. 4. Use promo codes. If you can’t use a phone number or URL, or you just want an added tracking tool, a unique promo code can assist in the tracking of a particular campaign. 5. Monitor your Google Analytics and social media tracking tools frequently. These metrics will give you excellent insight into your consumer base. Whether you’re a small business or a larger company, measuring the ROI of your marketing campaigns is the backbone of your efforts, not just your savvy marketing wit or amazingly designed ad (though these will surely help you with your end result). Top forecasters predict an above-average 2013 Atlantic hurricane season, with 18 tropical storms forecast, of which nine will be hurricanes. A typical year, based on weather records that go back to 1950, has 12 tropical storms, of which seven are hurricanes. A tropical storm has sustained winds of 39 mph; it becomes a hurricane when its winds reach 74 mph. The forecast was released by meteorologists Philip Klotzbach and William Gray at Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project. The Atlantic hurricane season starts June 1 and lasts until Nov. 30. Gray’s team was the first organization to issue seasonal hurricane forecasts back in 1984; this is the team’s 30th seasonal hurricane forecast. Insurance companies, emergency managers and the news media use the forecasts from Colorado State to prepare Americans for the season’s likely hurricane threat. The team’s annual predictions are intended to provide a best estimate of activity to be experienced during the upcoming season, not an exact measure, according to Colorado State. Hurricane names for 2013 In 1953, the National Weather Service began naming storms aer women. In 1979, male names were inserted to alternate with the female names. When hurricanes result in massive destruction, they’re banned from the list of hurricane names that are recycled by the National Hurricane Center every six years. The names are chosen and voted on by members of the World Meteorological Organization. (See the list of retired hurricane names at nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames_history. shtml#retired.) Last year’s Hurricane Sandy was officially struck from the list. “It could be this year, it could be next year but it will happen.” – Randy Webster, Horry County Emergency Management 6 MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com Here are the names for the 2013 season: •Andrea •Barry •Chantal •Dorian •Erin •Fernand •Gabrielle •Humberto •Ingrid •Jerry •Karen •Lorenzo •Melissa •Nestor •Olga •Pablo •Rebekah •Sebastien •Tanya •Van •Wendy Plan, prepare and practice Natural disasters are a simple fact of life. As Randy Webster, director of Horry County Emergency Management, says it is important to focus on being prepared because a hurricane will happen. “It could be this year, it could be next year but it will happen.” Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce offers a website (MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com/ member/hurricane) packed full of information regarding hurricanes. Included on this site are tips on preparing for an approaching storm, important telephone numbers in the area, a list of storm shelters, as well as evacuation routes out of the Myrtle Beach area. Also in the chamber’s hurricane section, you will find a Post Hurricane Business Survey. Aer a hurricane, send this survey back to us so we can pass along the status of your business to those who inquire. Message to Our Members Our Service Commitment I recently heard this from a local business: “Brad, the other day I opened up my mailbox and found a mailer from the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber. That same day, I see a TV ad and hear radio spots from the chamber, too. Promoting the destination to out-of-state consumers makes sense but why would the chamber advertise locally?” Perhaps you have wondered this too. The simple answer? Our core purpose is to promote, protect and improve our member businesses, but we recognize that as a leadership organization our impact extends far beyond our membership. We embrace the responsibility to keep our local community apprised of what we are doing. For example: • For many years, we’ve championed Interstate 73. I-73 will help us transform our seasonal, tourism-based economy by attracting new industry and higher-paying jobs. We will continue publicizing the benefits of completing our interstate connection until the road is finally built. • We recently launched year No. 2 of an innovative advertising campaign promoting the local real estate industry (ThinkMyrtleBeach.com). We naturally want our community to know what we are doing to help grow this very important segment of our economy. • We receive substantial funds from local and state government for the purposes of tourism advertising and we take the responsibility of stewardship very seriously. As a result, we embrace the need to report (to the general public) our expenditures of public funds. In fact, we voluntarily exceed all local and state reporting guidelines (MyrtleBeachAreaMarketing.com). • Our community involvement is also seen in our support of education initiatives. A few examples include the backing of Horry County Schools The Leader in Me program; creating the Youth Leadership Academy – a joint venture between Myrtle Beach Area Chamber and Leadership Grand Strand; and supporting South Carolina Business Week, which prepares young adults for the business environment by introducing them to the principles of leadership, teamwork and the American free enterprise system. And it goes without saying that Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce’s outreach is seen in the economic impact of tourism (TourismWorksForUs.com); job support (MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com/member/ job_connections.html), events calendar (GrandStrand Events.com), dining information (GrandStrandRestaurants. com), shop local campaigns (ShopOurMembers.com) and partnerships with a variety of local, state and national organizations that share common goals and objectives. So as we continue with our mission to promote and maintain the community’s economic vitality and excellent quality of life, we will strive to keep the general public informed on not only how the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber promotes the area and attracts millions of visitors year after year but also the underlying impact we have on the Grand Strand community. Myrtle Beach Area Convention & Visitors Bureau INSIDER June 2013 OH CANADA, EH! by Kimberly Hartley, Canadian account manager Kimberly Hartley at Outdoor Adventure Show in Toronto. We have a lot to “Celebrate” in Canada! The Canadian office is celebrating its fourth year of representing the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce/ Convention and Visitors Bureau, with continued efforts to promote the destination and its members with a strong sales and marketing plan targeting the travel trade, the consumer, and the media. As a result of the strong relationship and commitment between our two destinations, we continue to recognize an increase in visitors, media coverage, leisure and group travel, consumer interest and awareness, new travel trade partners, and additional nonstop airline service. The past few months have been an exciting, eventful, and successful time with our “Celebration” of a big news story from Toronto and the recent launch of new air service. On May 2, 2013, we celebrated our new partnership with WestJet Airlines, which launched its inaugural nonstop seasonal air service from the Lester B. Pearson International Airport (Toronto) to Myrtle Beach. The new nonstop flights are offered twice weekly, on Thursdays and Sundays, until Oct. 24, 2013. Inaugural festivities for the new WestJet flights were enjoyed by the almost full planeload of passengers, as well as invited travel trade media, all of whom were challenged to a miniature golf tournament in the Toronto Airport terminal and gate area. With the addition of the new WestJet service, the doors are open to welcome even more Canadian visitors to enjoy the fabulous accommodations and beach vacation experiences offered throughout the Myrtle Beach area. With the launch of the new air service by WestJet, we are also celebrating the arrival of WestJet Vacations, the tour operator division of the airline, which will offer vacation packages to eight resort properties in the Myrtle Beach area for the summer and fall season. In addition, we are celebrating the arrival of Porter Escapes, the new tour operator company of Porter Airlines, which is celebrating its fourth year of nonstop flights from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport to Myrtle Beach. Porter offers seasonal nonstop air service from February until May, with continued plans to fly its third fall season this year from September to November. June 2013 Convention & Visitors Bureau Canada, Continued From Insider Cover and attractions, beautiful beaches, tasty foods, outlet shopping and kind hospitality – everything that the Myrtle Beach area has to offer. Our travel partners, travel writers, travel agents and traveling consumers are interested in and eager to take advantage of the additional air service and vacation packages being offered to the Grand Strand. We capitalize on this demand by attending numerous trade and consumer shows in Eastern Canada, hosting travel events and sales missions, conducting educational training seminars and presentations, launching consumer and trade promotions, and increasing the promotion and visibility of the Myrtle Beach area in as many ways as possible in order to penetrate the Canadian market. In celebration of the 75th anniversary of Myrtle Beach, we launched a new national 2013 MBA (Myrtle Beach Area) Specialist Program for travel agents across Canada to learn more about the destination and become experts on selling the Myrtle Beach area. We developed and published a celebratory 28-page travel trade supplement for this year which highlights the “Then and Now” of the Myrtle Beach area, which has now reached more than 45,000 travel professionals nationwide, both in print and online. Over the next few months, we will continue to promote the “75 Secrets” of the Myrtle Beach area at trade, consumer and media events and receptions. In addition, we are currently celebrating our partnership with the Canadian Automobile Where in the world is the CVB? June 2013 Association (CAA) with a six-month long campaign targeting close to 2 million consumer members in Ontario and Atlantic Canada, as well as incentivizing all CAA staff in 45 agencies and five provinces to sell the Myrtle Beach area, with a chance to win an invitation to experience the Myrtle Beach area during our annual 2013 CAA Fam Tour scheduled for this fall. Every year Canadians look forward to Can-Am Days in March, and this year was no exception as we celebrated our 52nd anniversary of welcoming Canadians with open arms to our area with a variety of festivities, special offers and our warm hospitality. The media coverage in both the trade and consumer press was abundant with the message of this annual festival and Myrtle Beach’s 75th anniversary. More and more travel agents and trade press are visiting and experiencing the destination as it continues to gain in popularity from our efforts in Canada and from our members in the Myrtle Beach area. The Canadian dollar continues to be strong, along with the economy. Consumer confidence is high, interest rates are low, unemployment is decreasing, real estate is stable, and Canadian visitation to the United States continues to break records (up 11 percent in the first quarter of 2013). For these reasons and more, we welcome you to “Celebrate” the Canadian market with us, be part of our efforts, share the wealth, and welcome even more Canadians to Myrtle Beach, S.C.! Cheers! The graphs to the le generally reflect that, especially during the Easter and Passover period. At times like this it may be useful to step back to compare the current rate of change against the long-term average rate of change. The graphs show the 52-week moving average rate of change in the Brittain Center’s weekly samples of hotels, condo-hotels and campsites (HCHCs) and in its weekly samples of vacation rental home and condo properties (VRPs) along the Grand Strand. The long-term (five-year) average for each segment is also shown. The 52-week average rate of change in occupancy for the Center’s sample of VRPs is up 1.8 percent, which is below its longterm average rate of change, which is 3.3 percent. Inc.com columnist Geoffrey James shares some tips for keeping a positive attitude. 1. Don’t compare yourself to others. Everybody, and I mean everybody, starts out in a different place and is headed on their own journey. You have no idea where someone else’s journey might lead them, so drawing comparisons is a complete waste of time. 16 2. Never obsess over things you cannot control. 3. Know and keep your personal limits and boundaries. While it’s oen important to know about other things – like the economy, the markets that you sell to, the actions that others might take, your focus should remain on what you actually control, which is 1) your own thoughts and 2) your own actions. While your job might sometimes seem like the most important thing in your world, you’re killing a part of yourself if you let work situations push you into places that violate your privacy and your integrity. MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com 4. Don’t over commit yourself or your team. It’s great to be enthusiastic and willing to go the “extra mile,” but making promises that you (or your team) can’t reasonably keep is simply a way to create failure and disappointment. Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 by Shirley Landry, personnel coordinator, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce Federal law requires that every employer hiring an individual for employment in the United States complete a Form I-9, Employment Eligibility Verification. Form I-9 will help you verify your employee’s identity and employment authorization. To avoid an I-9 audit you should do a yearly self-audit. All I-9s should be kept together separate from the personnel files for either three years aer the date of hire or for one year aer employment is terminated, whichever is latest. The information from the I-9 is used to confirm eligibility for employment in the United States by using E-Verify which is required in South Carolina. A copy of the E-Verify documentation should be printed and attached to the I-9. On March 8, 2013, a revised I-9 was published and companies were advised to start using it immediately with a deadline of May 7, 2013. The new form contains six pages of very detailed instructions and the form itself has expanded to two pages, allowing the user more space and additional fields, like email address and phone number. Lodging, Continued From Page 14 The 52-week average rate of change in weekly advertised rental prices for the Center’s sample of VRPs is currently up 6.4 percent, which is above its long-term average rate of change, which is up at a rate of 3.1 percent. The current rate of change in average daily rate for the Center’s sample of HC-HCs is up 1.6 percent, while its long-term rate of change has been up 0.4 percent. The 52-week average rate of change in revenue per available bedroom for the Center’s sample of VRPs is current up 7.6 percent, which is above its long-term average rate of change of 5.8 percent. The current rate of change in average occupancy for the Center’s sample of HC-HCs is up 2 percent, while its long-term rate of change is -0.5 percent. The 52-week average rate of change in average occupancy in the VRP segment has been below its long-term average for most of the last two years, while at the same time advertised prices in that segment were still increasing at double digit rates until the end of 2012. The recent drop, in week-over-same-week last year rental prices in that segment, may now be reflecting that. The 52-week average rate of change in occupancy for the HC-HC group is still above its long term average, and rental prices in that segment do not appear to currently be falling at the same rate as that of VRPs. Consequently, the 52-week moving average for both VRPs and HC-HCs now stand at 1.8 percent points and 2.5 percentage points higher, respectively, than their fiveyear moving 52-week average rate of change. Grand Strander 21 Hospitality Partnership MBHospitality.org 2013 Trio Dinner The Trio Dinner is the culmination of a culinary arts mentorship program that pairs a professional chef with two students, one in high school and one in college. High school students participating in the mentorship program are from the Academy for Technology and Academics. The college students completing the trio are from the culinary arts program at Horry Georgetown Technical College. The chefs who participated in this year’s Trio Dinner were Chef Mike Ford, Sheraton Myrtle Beach Convention Center Hotel, Chef Bradley Boandi, Bistro 90, Chef Sean Thomas, Capriz Italian Feast, Chef Bradley Daniels of Croissants Bistro & Bakery, Chef Casey Blake, Drunken Jack’s, Chef Dan Smith, Frank’s, Chef Julien Lancrerot, Hilton Myrtle Beach Resort – Cafe Amalfi, Chef Tom Pennell, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and Chef Mike Gadson, Springmaid Beach Resort. Lancrerot, Hilton – Cafe Amalfi, and his students Megian Cinari, Jonathan Dillard and Chaqueria Vereen. The winning dish was blackened mahi-mahi with corn maque choux and a fennel onion salad with a spicy tomato sauce. The winner of this year’s “Best Dish” award was Chef Casey Blake of Drunken Jack’s and his students Daniela Gamboa, Wyman Franklin and William Wallace. The winning dish was crab and lobster risotto topped with seared blackened beef tender. The Trio Dinner’s purpose is to support and promote the hospitality industry’s culinary arts profession and to give each student real-world experience in creating an original dish with the guidance of an executive chef. A portion of the proceeds of the event go to MBAHA scholarship funds directed at hospitality and culinary education. The winner of this year’s “People’s Choice” award was Chef Julien In-Market Visitor Profile Study The Myrtle Beach Area Hospitality Association through the Hospitality Partnership with the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce needs your help with an In-Market Visitor Profile Study. The goal is to establish a baseline of visitor demographics by surveying visitors throughout the entire year. The year has been broken into five seasons: winter (January-February), spring (MarchMay), summer (June-August), fall (September-October), holiday (November-December). We need properties to participate by giving the survey to your guests. At the end of each season, participants will receive a copy of the overall visitor information, and a profile of your properties visitors, which will be provided to you only. All information received will be kept strictly confidential. It will not cost you anything. We will provide you with the survey cards for each of your properties for each season, and ask that your frontline employees hand the cards out when the guest checks out. It would be up to your frontline staff to briefly explain that by completing the online survey, the guests will have the opportunity to win a free $100 American Express gi card and be entered into a drawing at the end of the year for a 3 day/2 night vacation. If an employee has put their ID on the card, and that card is drawn as a winner, then the employee also wins a $100 American Express gi card. All participants’ information collected will be used to award prizes only and will not be distributed for mailing lists. → For more details on the program or to sign up, contact Wendy Bernstein, MBACC research manager, at (843) 916-7217 or [email protected]. 22 MyrtleBeachAreaChamber.com Calendar Jun 3 ................................................
