In the future, cities and communities will have to face
numerous demographical and environmental policy
challenges to ensure a high quality of life. In Europe,
the „Smart City“ concept has become the vision for a
sustainable city. Learn more about the idea behind it in
our article of the same name.
As part of our innovation campaign, with the DALVIK family we introduce a further completely new collection of
luminaires and site furnishings for the holistic design of
urban spaces. Even before its market launch in January
2015, the DALVIK LED luminaire was awarded not one but
two renowned design awards. Be inspired by DALVIK’s
versatility, flexibility and uniformity!
Rapid changes in the lighting industry require quick
decision-making. A very special customer event dedicated to this topic was hosted by Hess in November 2014 in
Cologne: Under the heading „Designing cities - making
decisions“ three guest speakers, among them the former
top referee and current ZDF football expert and excellent
speaker Urs Meier, talked about what it means to make
the most difficult decisions under maximum pressure.
In addition to these and other topics, we would like to
use this December issue of our Lightletter as an opportunity to review the exciting projects from the year 2014.
Together with you, we have implemented numerous customised design and lighting solutions for extraordinary
projects. We have summarised the project reports of the
last 10 months in pictures for you - and look forward to
new undertakings for which we may furthermore offer
you our support.

Becoming a
Smart City
The cities of the future are sustainable, energy efficient, and
liveable
Due to the global trend towards urbanisation, cities have
become the primary living environment for humans in recent
decades. To be able to offer the citizens a high quality of life,
new forward-looking urban development concepts are required:
Sustainable cities aspire to careful management of natural
resources, intelligent mobility and communication systems as
well as community residential and living spaces.
Smart City Vienna: A liveable city
„Best quality of life with the most efficient resource conservation“- the key objective of the Smart City Vienna until the year
2050 is reinforced by more than 150 representatives from the city
council, industry, research and society, who debated the further
implementation of the Smart City framework strategy at the 7th
Smart City Vienna stakeholder forum in early November 2014.
Smart City - The vision of an intelligent city of the future
Due to the necessity of reinterpreting existing urban structures
and their uses such as work, living, and leisure the „Smart City“
concept emerged in Europe as overarching model of a
sustainable city.
This generic idea refers to holistic urban development concepts
that use innovation intelligently and integrates it in the areas
energy, traffic as well as information and communication
technology, to make city life more efficient and more attractive.
Berlin, Cologne, Vienna - Exemplary “Smart Cities”
German cities such as Berlin or Cologne have already set
themselves ambitious „Smart City“ objectives. An efficient
infrastructure, environmentally compatible mobility, exemplary
climate protection projects and a high quality of life
characterise everyday life in these cities. In addition,
Austria‘s capital of Vienna with 1.8 million residents bears
the title „Smart City“ and sees itself as an „intelligent city“
regarding innovative energy, mobility and infrastructure
solutions.
Danube City is a central, modern part of the 22nd Vienna district. Its immediate
proximity to nature and the spectacular view of the Danube make this part of the city
particularly attractive.
The concept adopted in 2011 is divided into the action
areas - resources, innovation, and quality of life. One of the
objectives pursued is the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 80 per cent per head by the year 2050. Furthermore,
from 2018/2020, a lowest-energy building standard will apply
to all new buildings and renovations. Comprehensive refurbishments of existing buildings are to contribute to the reduction of
energy consumption by 1 % per head and year.
The Vienna museum district is one of the largest cultural sites in the world and is characterized by a high feel good factor. Its inner courtyard is decorated with colourful outdoor
furniture called „Enzi“ – a design of the Vienna group of architects PPAG, named after the former authorized representative of the Vienna museum district Daniela Enzi.
Furthermore, the ample green spaces for leisure activities,
such as the Vienna Forest (Wienerwald) and the Danube Island
(Donauinsel), which currently cover approximately half of the
city area, provide a high feel-good factor. Their contemporary
preservation and expansion according to population growth in
coming years is also a task set in the Vienna Smart City framework strategy.
Keeping this overarching objective to become the city with the
highest quality of life in Europe in mind, the framework strategy
focuses on social inclusion and comprehensive participation
and decision-making opportunities for the citizens. Thus, social
justice and equal opportunities are seen as key principles for
making comprehensive life provisions.

EU initiative „Smart Cities and Communities 2015“ (SCC)
On 12 February 2015, an official information day regarding the
current funding priorities of the EU takes place in Brussels.
Focus is placed on explaining the content of the tender priority

“European Smart Cities and Communities”. This funding priority
is part of the European research and innovation programme
“Horizon 2020” and calls for cities, industry partners and
citizens to develop together proposals for solutions for the areas energy, supply, traffic, logistics as well as information and
communication technologies.
Smart Cities Week 2015
From 04 to 06 March 2015, the expert symposium „Smart Cities
Week 2015“ takes place in Salzburg under the theme „A social
and innovative energy future thanks to integrated system
solutions“. Presentations and workshops highlight various
aspects of this challenge and demonstrate solutions. The event
is hosted by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology as well as the Austrian Climate and Energy

The EU provides funding for flagship projects setting the stage.
Project proposals can be submitted until 05 May 2015. The
Nationale Kontaktstelle Energie, www.nks-energie.de is among

With „Aspern - the Urban Lakeside“ a new multifunctional district for 20,000 residents will gradually be developed during the next 20 years in the north east of Vienna.

Innovation campaign with
the DALVIK family
A product family for the holistic design of urban spaces
Sophisticated design concept
DALVIK LED luminaire and complementary bench mark the
launch of a completely new collection from January 2015
for the design of urban spaces. Designed for versatile application in streets, pathways and places, the pole-mounted luminaire DALVIK fulfils a wide range of technical lighting requirements and allows a uniform design in all urban applications.
The core of the new luminaire family is a LED luminaire
head made of cast-aluminium in 2 versions:

In combination with compatible site furnishings the DALVIK
family constitutes another entirely new and harmonious collection for planners and architects for the design of public spaces.

Flexible application
Simple maintenance concept
Variable adapters allow this luminaire head to be fitted to Hess
poles with diameters ranging from 60 to 230 mm. Additionally,
the DALVIK luminaire head can be fitted to third-party poles
using the appropriate adapter.
The complete electrics are fitted at the top of the luminaire head
frame using four screws and optimum heat supply is ensured.
The frame can be swung open to the side by loosening the
screws.

Intelligent light management
For need-based control of light, the DAVLIK luminaire can be
connected to various dimming systems, for example DIMPro.
DALVIK can be equipped with one to three of Hess‘ LEVO Q
modules. These energy efficient modules are available with
rotationally symmetrical or asymmetrical optics. Optainable
are the light colours 3000 K, 4000 K, and 5600 K.

Designing cities – Making decisions
On 13 November 2014, Hess invited customers to a very special
event at the KölnSKY in the „TriangleTurm“ in Cologne: Under
the heading „Designing cities - making decisions“ three guest
speakers talked about light and decisions.
Three exciting presentations and many new impulses
After the introduction by Pierre van Lamsweerde, Managing
Director of Hess and CEO of the Nordeon Group, Gerhard
Kleiker, Manager of Public Lighting and Telecommunications
at Rheinenergy AG in Cologne talked about the city design and
architectural lighting options that LED technology offers using
the city of Cologne as an example.

International Year
of Light
In October 2014, Hess passed the maintenance audit as per DIN
EN ISO 9001 / 14001 carried out by the external auditing company Dekra without any objections. This positive result confirms
the continuous further development of the work procedures as
well as efficient and sustainable processes as the basis for the
high product quality at Hess.
The United Nations declared the year 2015 as the
„International Year of Light“. Under the theme „Light for
Change”, the objective is to emphasize the importance of
light as a fundamental requirement to live for humans, animals
and plants as well as a key component of science and culture.
Throughout the year, numerous symposiums, workshops,
commemorative and cultural events regarding the topic of

In his talk „Dynamische Beleuchtung in Städten und Kommunen
– Dynamic lighting in cities, towns and communities“ lighting
designer Oliver Christen of the municipal and architectural lighting agency „OC | Lichtplanung“ in Diepholz presented valuable
insights into the practice and exemplary lighting solutions.
Asking questions, exchanging ideals, gaining new impulses
The particularly intimate setting of this event allowed participants to enjoy open discussions and conversations.
A presentation by the former top referee and current ZDF
football expert and excellent speaker Urs Meier about his experiences at top-class sport events followed. In his motivating
and emotional talk, the specialist in decision-making showed
what it means to make decisions under maximum pressure and
„between the frontlines“.
Series of lectures on
the topic of „light“
To mark the International Year of Light 2015, many German
universities follow the cultural historical, scientific and social
traces of light in their public series of lectures as part of the
extracurricular studies. For example, at the HafenCity University
Hamburg a variety of lectures look at various aspects of
„Light and Shadow“ every Wednesday, up to and including
February 11, 2015.

JANUARY 2014 – NORDEN
Luminous all-rounders indicate the water level of the North Sea
The City of Norden in the North-West of Lower-Saxony (Germany) is one of the oldest East Fresian towns and
is renown as the „green gate to the North Sea“. Long sandy beaches, gently rolling dunes, and the Wadden
Sea with its twice-daily repeated change between low tide and high tide have made this North Sea spa into
a popular coastal travel destination.
Since the end of 2013, six unique Hess LED illuminating columns set new accents at the dike steps in the
Norddeich area and at other selected locations within the City of Norden. What makes them unique: The six
meters high and 30 centimetres thick columns are not employed for illumination purposes as usual, but to
indicate the current state of the tides of the North Sea.

Charlotte – Romare Bearden Park

Sophisticated lighting effects for new municipal park in Charlotte (North Carolina, USA)
Romare Bearden Park in Uptown Charlotte opened to an enthusiastic crowd of several thousand people
in early September. The $11 million park commemorates the life of internationally renowned local artist,
Romare Bearden, who grew up in the area in the early 1900’s.
FIORA and RIVA pole mounted luminaires illuminate the main pathways and one of the interactive
play areas, making this public space our latest featured project. Located adjacent to the entrance of
Charlotte’s new baseball stadium, BB&T Ballpark, the park is certain to be enjoyed by many who visit this
popular downtown setting.

visitors throughout the year. Following the comprehensive redesign of the pedestrian zone
during the previous months, the highly frequented main shopping streets have become even
more attractive.

Maritime points of light by the Baltic Sea
Untouched coastal landscapes, endlessly long sand beaches, historic manor houses, and a picturesque old
town - the Baltic Sea spa Heiligenhafen in Schleswig-Holstein offers numerous places of interest and attracts as the
„sun deck at the Baltic Sea“ many visitors throughout the year.
With the redesigned lake‘s south promenade, reaching from the marina in the East to the holiday park in the West,
Heiligenhafen created another tourist attraction; Now the approximately two kilometres long promenade offers
separate bicycle and foot paths, play areas, and respite islands - some of them with square-like wooden walkway
areas - that invite passers-by to take a break on rotating loungers and seats. In the evening hours, elegant illuminating columns of the type VIGO by Hess immerse the wooden decks in ambient light, while at selected sites on the
promenade, specially made luminaires that look like sail boat masts enhance orientation.

Kissimmee – Lakefront Park
JUNE 2014 – KISSIMMEE
Kissimmee Lakefront Park: Major renovation for greater functionality
Kissimmee Lakefront Park underwent a major renovation, officially reopening to the public in April 2013.
Bordering streets and utilities around the site were realigned, allowing the existing park to be reconfigured for greater functionality. New amenities include picnic areas, playgrounds, a fishing dock and
boat ramp, performance stage, and open grassy areas for events. The centerpiece of the project is Ruby
Plaza, which unifies the expansive twenty-five acre park and serves as a gateway to downtown City of
Kissimmee.

Award-winning urban design with light
The allure of times gone by still has a great impact on Coburg‘s picturesque townscape: As one of the largest and best
preserved castles in Germany, the fortress Veste Coburg towers above this Upper Franconian town, while at the foot of
this stronghold historical sights such as the Ehrenburg palace and the town hall dating back to the 16th century remind
of the blooming literary eras of this former capital of the duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.
In recent years, the town of Coburg redesigned many of its historic sights and put them effectively into the limelight:
After the market square, theatre square and the station forecourt, Albertsplatz was updated with specially designed
Coburg luminaires by Hess.
The lighting design developed by Stuttgart-based lighting design consultancy LDE Belzner Holmes builds a bridge
between functional lighting and artistic staging of this listed area – an exemplary lighting concept for which the Albertsplatz and the lighting design consultancy won the German Prize for Lighting Design 2014 in the category „outdoor
lighting / public spaces“.

HafenCity University Hamburg: University at the forefront of progress
The profile of the HafenCity University Hamburg is unique, even beyond the borders of Germany:
Since its foundation in 2006 by the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the university for ‚architecture and
metropolitan development‘ is the only university in Europe to focus on future relevant issues and
the challenges of metropolitan environments.
The newly designed university square in front of the eastern entrance of the building is an inviting
area to take a break and at the same time a much frequented thoroughfare. The varying characteristics of the area are emphasised by a sophisticated open space design and ambient illumination
thanks to the CITY ELEMENTS LED illuminating columns.

With an international focus and located at the „gateway to Europe“, the Erasmus University in
Rotterdam‘s reputation precedes it as an excellent place to study. The high quality of its teaching and
research, along with strong partnerships with international colleges and institutes, mean that the
Erasmus University has earned a place amongst the top ten universities in Europe.
In order to make it a more attractive place to study and work, the university‘s Woudenstein Campus,
which covers 28 hectares, is currently being renovated in sections. Today 70 RESIDENZA luminaires
