CARDIOLOGY TECHNOLOGISTS ASSOCIATION OF B.C.
P.O. Box 2575, 349 West Georgia St., Vancouver, B.C. V6B 3W8
Greetings from BC.
Since last fall, there is some news regarding there being a regulatory college in BC in the form of an umbrella college including
cardiology technologists, medical laboratory technologists, medical radiation technologists, respiratory therapists, and
ultrasonographers (ultrasound techs). Although there was no change in the governing political party after our provincial
election, our lobbyist and members of our strategic planning committee were able to meet face to face with the new Minister of
Health. There were other meetings with interested parties and subsequently our application was discussed on the House of
Commons floor. There are good indications that the government has seen the importance of our groups’ application and the
process will continue to move forward.
In other governmental/legislative news, our provincial government recently has proposed changes to Part 10 of our Society Act
which addresses Occupational Title Protection (OTP). There are two proposed substantial changes which include no longer
granting occupational titles to registered societies in the future and secondly to allow the occupational titles granted in the past
to continue, but subject to certain revisions. There will be an expanded and improved enforcement mechanism such that only
registered members of a society, ie CTABC, will be allowed to call themselves registered cardiology technologists/technicians.
In regards to the new cardiology technology program being offered in BC and is at the Vancouver Island Institute of Medical
Technology (VIIMT) in Victoria. The first cohort that wrote the CSCT certification exam this April did exceptionally well and
a second cohort has been registered with CTABC to write the CSCT exam in April 2015.
As well, VIIMT assisted in hosting this year’s CTABC AGM on Sunday May 25th in Victoria. As in recent past years, there
was 3 educational speakers followed by our AGM in the afternoon. A long term member Linda Pearce is to be commended for
obtaining all the door prizes.
Our membership continues to increase in numbers especially now with three cardiology technology programs in our province
and we now have a total membership of 625; 500 Active members, 36 Inactive, 3 Life members and 86 students.
In closing, I hope to see many of you at our CSCT Education Day tomorrow, October 26th at the CCCs within the convention
centre. The draw winners to attend the CCCs paid by CTABC, your provincial association from the three region of the
province were: Lower Mainland – Keith Hurt, Vancouver Island- Sally Salter, and Interior- Patricia White.
Respectfully submitted,
Cheryl West

ASRCT annual general meeting and education session was held in Edmonton on April 5,
2014. Dr. Evan Lockwood presented on Caffeine and the Heart and Dr. Mikael
Hanninen presented on ECG Based Approach to Syncope Diagnosis. There was a photo
booth area where our presenters mingled with the membership and had some fun with us.
At elections some temporary changes were made with a few executive positions. The
CEU coordinator stepped down mid-term as such the CEU co-ordinator and Registrar
position had to be combined. Our new Education Co-ordinator is Irene Marjanovic.
Susan Ronneberg did not continue as Treasurer. We thank Susan for all her service in the
past and help in transitioning Sherry Raven as the new Treasurer/Secretary.
Health Professions Act regulation is pending. Senior levels of government are now
reviewing our application. The premier in Alberta has changed and whenever there are
government changes and the Ministers are reassigned, there are delays. We are the next
profession to be reviewed to join the regulated group the Alberta College of Medical
Diagnostic And Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT).
Our Alberta website
www.asrct.com will be updated with information as we progress.
The Stenberg College cardiology technology satellite program is doing very well in
Alberta. Twenty-one students wrote at the CSCT certification examination September
2014 session. Three students rewrote part 1. The exam sitting included students from all
programs.
It is wonderful to be in Vancouver for this year’s congress and we thank the organizing
committee for the time and effort put in to enable us all to enjoy another successful CCC
experience.
Respectfully submitted.

Since our last CSCT Annual General Meeting in Montreal on October 19th, 2013,
Manitoba’s Education Coordinator and Assistant Education Coordinator invigilated two
CSCT exams (April and September, 2014). In April, five students rewrote the exam. Two
students rewrote part 2, one student rewrote part one, two students rewrote the full exam,
and one cardiology technologist wrote the device specialty exam. On behalf of MACT’s
Board of Director’s, I would like to congratulate all students who were successful.
In September 2014, eight students attempted the CSCT exam. Six students from Stenberg
College wrote the full exam and one student re-wrote part 2. One student from the Arts
and Technology Program re-wrote part 1. I look forward to seeing these 8 students
successfully become registered cardiology technologists. There is certainly a need for
more qualified technologists in Manitoba.
This year our AGM and Education Session were held on May 10th 2014 at the Asper
Centre, St. Boniface Hospital. We had three excellent speakers. Cardiologist Dr. F.
Cordova Perez delivered a riveting presentation on Congestive Heart Failure: “The Truth,
the Bad, the Ugly, and the Not So Ugly”. Dr. D. McMillan R.N. PhD was our second
speaker and gave a very informative presentation on “Fatigue on Night Shifts”. Lastly,
Cardiologist Dr. I. Barac gave an excellent presentation on “Exercise Tolerance Testing”.
There were 34 members in attendance and the event was catered with healthy snacks and
a hearty lunch. The AGM was lively and provided a great opportunity to meet past and
present members.
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to all MACT Board Members for their hard
work, dedication and commitment in making this past year a successful one.

Hello to all,
It is nice to be back in Vancouver once again for CCC.
The Annual General Meeting and Seminar for the province took place in early October
with some excellent speakers and topics such as Diabetes and Pacemakers. We are
fortunate to have presenters who give their time freely to us and provide us with a
wealth of information and knowledge.
We had two students who challenged the exam this fall and we wish them great success
and hope they do well.
There has been one change in our executive. Our registrar/treasurer position has
changed hands. All other positions remain the same.

Greetings from NB!
I would like to take a moment to thank you all for making me feel so welcome. This has
been a huge learning curve for me. Lynn has left behind some big shoes to fill, but I look
forward to the challenge.
With our move to the new union, we have been invited to participate in the Pay Equity
Questionnaire. This is a standardized questionnaire which seeks to quantify the difficulty,
conditions, education, and effort required to effectively be an RCT. They then compare
our position (predominantly female) with another profession (predominantly male) to see
if there has been any gender bias in pay grades. In August we put together a small
meeting with some RCT’s from some of the major facilities in our province so that we
could go over the questionnaire together. After a long day we came away with a draft
document, which was shared with all the facilities in our province. We look forward to
the results.
There are some inconsistencies and outright errors in our provinces HR system with
regard to our profession (ex: Diagnostic Imaging Tech has EST’s listed as a duty). I have
started to compile a list of them and will endeavor to have them corrected.
And, of course, the nuclear medicine issue is ongoing in Moncton. We should have a
resolution by year end.

Greetings from NS & PEI !!
Since the last CSCT AGM, the members of CTANS have been busy working towards legislation. A few of
our members met with the Department of Health & Wellness for a one hour presentation. DH & W did
not say NO to us but they asked us to come back with a more indepth presentation on why we believe
we need to be legislated. Our lawyer is working with us on this presentation and we are currently
waiting to hear for another date to meet with them.
We have had several students from NS attend the Stenberg Hybrid Program and Halifax hosted the first
clinical portion of their course in conjunction with Dal Housie University.
Now that the association has a new logo, this past year we started selling clothing with our association
logo on it, something that the members had requested. It was a huge success.
This past May, NS & PEI held it’s AGM and Provincial Education Day in Bridgewater, NS and it was a huge
success!! The RCT’s at the hospital had wonderful speakers ranging from ICD’s, Organ & Tissue
Donation, Obesity, Stroke Protocol New Guidelines and Motivational Interviewing. The following day
we held our AGM, which included a few elections and we welcomed a couple of new members to the
executive.
We also honoured one of our members with a Provincial Life Time Membership to Linda Bourbonnnais,
who has been with our association for 40 + years. Even though she retired a few years ago, she
continues to work casually and is know for her love of teaching and has probably taught almost all of our
RCT’s that are in our province today.

CSCT REPORT OCTOBER 2014
Active Membership: 581
OSCT held their Education Day and AGM May 3rd in Newmarket. It was well attended
with over 200 in attendance. Next year we will be celebrating our 10 year anniversary as
OSCT and we are looking forward to welcoming members to our events which will be
held in London.
At the AGM we welcomed two new members to our Board this year. Lorraine Smith took
on the position of Registrar and Emily O’Rourke the position of Assistant CEU Director.
This year the membership voted to favour to increase our Dues by $10 next year to bring
the provincial portion more in line with what is being submitted to CSCT. Next year,
Ontario will introduce the Inactive Membership status to align with the CSCT
membership category as outlined in the bylaws.
We had over 70 candidates challenge the CSCT exam in September. A big thank you to
Blair, our Education Director and her helpers for making this day run so smoothly. We
wish all our candidates success.
I sit on the Regulation Committee which was pleasantly surprised this year with some
much needed momentum and the opportunity to meet with HPRAC representatives in
early March. At this meeting, while endorsing the cardiac sonographers, we took the
opportunity to express our interest in regulating our members as they are complimentary
professions. They expressed interest in how many of our members were working in
cardiac sonography as well. We took the opportunity to survey our membership at our
AGM and via email and submitted this data to them the beginning of June. They have
responded quite favourably with this data submission as they look at regulating
sonographers in Ontario. Unfortunately, due to changes from the recent election, we are
at a standstill until the new Health Minister gets acquainted with his portfolio. We look
forward to engaging in this process further in the future.
