CEO LETTER
Dear Partner:
The end of a year and the start of a new one are always an opportune time
for reflection.
2012 has been a year of investments for the Esco group. From new
products, new manufacturing facilities, to new Esco sales companies, we remain
dedicated to our Vision of providing enabling technologies for scientific
discoveries to make human lives healthier and safer.
On the growth front, almost all regions and product categories recorded
healthy growth, with special mention for our freezer product line, which is
now the fastest growing Esco product! Four new Esco sales companies were
established, not to mention the many alliances renewed with our distribution
partners, and footprint expansion in existing territories.
Lin Xiang Qian, CEO
On the manufacturing front, the mother factory in Bintan is now all under one roof in the expanded ETC site. This
has been realized with freezer manufacturing moving into a new factory wing in December 2012. We also congratulate our associates in Kaunas on the first shipments of the EU-made Multi-room incubators!
We can also look back on 2012 as a year of many new products, including a full line of ULT freezers, expanded
range of CO2 incubators and other thermostatics products, launch of a new touchscreen PCR thermal cycler, launch

Of course, all of the above would not be possible without the dedication of our Esco team members all around the
world, and the support of our supply chain and distribution partners. Thank you and we are looking forward to a
successful 2013 together! Happy new year!
Personal regards,
XQ Lin
Group President and CEO

Dr. Shinya Yamanaka Wins 2012 Nobel Prize
in Medicine
Dr. Shinya Yamanaka together with Dr. John Gurdon won last year’s Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their
groundbreaking work in cellular reprogramming. Their discovery led to great advances in the field of biology, from
cloning to treatment of diseases using a patient’s own cells.
Source: UCSF
Their experiments showed that mature cells taken from the body can be reprogrammed to resemble an embryonic
stem cell. The discovery is the biological equivalent of turning back time.
Their work has changed the belief that mature cells are forever committed to a specialized function. In 1962, Dr.
Gurdon performed a daring experiment in an effort to understand how simple undifferentiated cells become all
other cells in the body. He removed the nucleus of a frog egg and replaced it with a nucleus from a tadpole’s intestinal cell. The egg developed into a healthy tadpole which is a clone of the donor tadpole. His experiment was the
basis for the creation of Dolly the sheep in 1996. Now 79, Dr. Gurdon is a professor at the Gurdon Institute, part of
Cambridge University.
Dr. Yamanaka demonstrated that a mature cell can be turned back into its embryonic-like state just by adding four
genes which are now collectively known as the Yamanaka factors. He first did the experiment using mouse cells and
then human cells in 2007. He transformed the cells into heart, nerve and other human tissues in a lab.
Mature cells reprogrammed into embryonic-like cells can be further manipulated and turned into heart, nerve, muscle and virtually all other tissues types.
Many labs have modified how they do stem-cell research because of Dr. Yamanaka’s breakthrough.
Dr. Shinya Yamanaka serves as the Director and Professor of Kyoto University’s Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA) and Principal Investigator at the Institute for Integrated Cell-Material Sciences (WPI-iCeMS ), and we
are very much honored of the fact that Esco Biological Safety Cabinets are used in conducting cutting-edge research
and experiments in their laboratories.
Esco is proud to be part of CiRA, and we are honored to support those activities in the background by providing the
researchers around the world with reliable Biological Safety Cabinets.

Esco Unveils the New Aeris™ Thermal Cycler
Esco has yet again come up with another innovation the new Aeris™ Thermal Cycler. The Aeris™ Thermal
Cycler is an ideal multi-function PCR amplification
system which provides real flexibility and reliability
with affordable price.
Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) enables researchers to
produce millions of copies of a specific DNA sequence.
PCR is now a common and often indispensable technique
used in medical and biological research labs for a variety of
applications. These include DNA cloning for sequencing,
DNA-based phylogeny, or functional analysis of genes;
the diagnosis of hereditary diseases; the identification
of genetic fingerprints (used in forensic sciences and
paternity testing); and the detection and diagnosis of
infectious diseases.
The method relies on thermal cycling consisting of cycles of repeated heating and cooling. That is why rapid
temperature ramping, precise temperature control,
block uniformity and flexible segment programming are
essential performance attributes of a thermal cycler.

US Fungal Meningitis Outbreak and the Role of
Esco in Drug Compounding
Drug or pharmaceutical compounding is a common practice wherein a particular pharmaceutical product is created to fit the unique needs of a patient especially for products which are not commercially available due to low
demand. Unfortunately, many tragic incidents causing injury and death due to contaminated or wrongly prepared
compounded drugs have been reported during the past three decades. These incidents spark great public concern
about the quality and safety of compounded drugs and the oversight of the pharmacies that compound them.
8
Esco News | Jan 2013
The latest reported incident is the meningitis outbreak in the US where 368 patients had fungal meningitis and 37
of these had died as of December 10, 2012.1 The outbreak was first reported in October and was traced to fungal
contamination in three lots of medication of preservative-free methylprednisolone acetate (MPA) used in epidural
steroid injections. The medication was packaged and distributed by the New England Compounding Center (NECC)
in Massachusetts. The predominant fungus found is the black mold Exserohilum rostratum. According to specialists in fungal diseases, cases of meningitis caused by black mold are rare making it harder for clinicians to treat the
disease.
At least 20 lawsuits were filed against the NECC. Victims of the outbreak may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and more. After launching an investigation, the Massachusetts Board
of Registration in Pharmacy decided to permanently revoke NECC’s license to operate in Massachusetts as well as
the licenses of the company’s three principal pharmacists to fill prescriptions in Massachusetts. All the products of
NECC were also recalled subject to investigation. Two more compounding pharmacies in Massachusetts were also
shut down over sterility concerns after a surprise inspection.
All these hassles and deaths could have been avoided if the responsible parties were stringent enough in following
proper procedures and industry best practices. In the preparation of compounded drugs, it is very important that
the drug preparations to be used are not exposed to any contaminant.
Many pharmacy-related organizations such as the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) have issued recommendations
for quality assurance in drug compounding to improve patient safety. Esco Isoclean® Pharmacy Isolators, premium
solutions for sterile drug compounding, are designed with strict compliance with USP 797 guidelines to provide
superior sterility and maximum operator protection during drug compounding. Isoclean® Isolators provide total
physical separation between the product and the outside environment compared with open front clean air devices
such as laminar flow clean benches and Class II biological safety cabinets. All Esco Isoclean® Pharmacy Isolators
utilize ULPA filters with a typical efficiency of 99.999% at 0.1 to 0.3 microns that provide superior ISO Class 3 air
cleanliness, 100 times better than competing products. The Isocide™ antimicrobial coating on all powder coated
surfaces eliminates 99.9% of surface bacteria within 24 hours of exposure. Isoclean® Isolators feature built-in digital
airflow and pressure displays. Esco offers a complete range of barrier isolators configured for various applications
and requirements.
