Elyria Public Library System the possibilities Serving the Elyria City School District & Keystone Local School District the next chapter Newsletter of the Elyria Public Library System: Septermber - December 2016 In this Issue: Lyn’s Letter: A Note from the Director 1-3 Central Library 4-5 West River Branch 6-7 Keystone-LaGrange 8 North Branch 9 South Branch 9 And More Library News 10 Friends News 11 RR indicates Registration Required Dear Friends, I have some exciting news for you. We have listened to our library users and non users and will be making some changes to our Washington Avenue and West River branches to better serve you. Next year will be the 50th anniversary of the opening of Central. The marketing materials used in the fundraising in 1965 told of the need for a “100 year building”– one that would last for future generations. Indeed, this concrete block and brick fortress was so well-constructed that it should last for another 50 years! It was a great investment by the Elyria community. Funds were raised through many sources, including the Elyria Kiwanis Club, a Library Services and Construction Act (LSCA grant through the state library), and many individual donations. But as we celebrate the first half of its lifespan, we must take note of how libraries have changed in 50 years. At that time, there were no audio-visual materials, staff, or public computers. It was built as a book warehouse with 70,000 titles. Today, it houses 125,000. Although our library still has lots of print books and magazines, we also offer downloadable books and magazines, online databases, and streaming audio and video materials. As our physical collection space needs have changed, so has the demand for accommodating people’s devices – laptops, tablets and smart phones. We also need community space, whether it is for individuals who are studying quietly or job searching, or as a gathering place for meetings and programs for all ages. The Library offers almost 2,000 programs annually for kids, teens, adults, seniors and families. And so, we are now positioning ourselves for the next 50 years of service to the community. The Board and staff have done their due diligence in researching library trends and forecasts for the future, as well as assessing how our work needs to flow. We have visited other libraries, here and across the US. (Librarians always go to a local library when they are on vacation.) We interviewed top local library architects and have chosen to work with Duane VanDyke of Van Dyke Architects . He has worked extensively with the staff to determine our wants and needs. We think that we have arrived at a suitable floor plan for updates and renovations, which is posted at both our Central and West River branches. I invite you to take a look at it, and comment in person or email us at [email protected]. While we are planning on updating and upgrading, we have chosen “Preserve our past for future generations” as our theme. To honor our past, we will recreate elements of the past Elyria Library buildings into our new design. Preserving our past for future generations... In order to open up space at Central, we will be relocating our local history and genealogy room to the second floor of our West River branch. That room, although new, will look 100 years old, with architectural elements that recreate the look of the first Elyria Library on Broad Street. Two new ADA Compliant Family restrooms will also be added to the second floor. Elyria Public Library System the possibilities Our Youth Services Department, will be relocated to the back of the building. Keeping kids separate from the adult traffic, and toddlers away from those tempting front doors, will increase safety for our children. In their new space, we will increase natural light with additional windows and add a family restroom. The Children’s Department Preschool Porch, a room for age-appropriate educational toys and activities, will feature a façade that is reminiscent of the beautiful wrap-around porch on the library location in the Reefy House on 3rd Street. We will also add a Baby Play & Grow area. Play is the work of childhood. Between ages 0 - 2, babies’ brains are developing as they explore the world around them. We have a vision to create a space for our youngest patrons where they can gain valuable pre-literacy skills. With the open space at Central, the library will gain a new gender-neutral family restroom in the adult area and a quiet study area with support for modern devices. Proposed Ce 2 September - December 2016 Lyn’s Letter September - December 2016 Lyn’s Letter Imagine the possibilities... And there will finally be room for teens because we’d rather they hang out at the library than on the streets. We will welcome them into our Teen Tech Center, a designated space including computers and space for individual learning, gaming with teen friends, and age-appropriate resources and programs. entral Floor Plan This project provides a means for you to demonstrate your commitment to the community through a naming opportunity. As an association library, one of only 17 in the state of Ohio, the Elyria Public Library System is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, and donations to it are tax-deductible under Section 170 of the IRS code. All donations are appreciated, and those in excess of $499 will be marked with the donor’s name. This is a wonderful way to demonstrate your individual or corporate support for your own community; to create a lasting memorial; or to make a memory for future generations to see. Available naming opportunities range from $25,000 to $500 and include the Children’s, Teen and Adult Departments; Preschool Porch; Genealogy/Local History Room; Teen Tech Center; Quiet Reading Room; Circulation; Children’s and Reference Desks; Indoor Book Return; Baby Play and Grow space; Memorial Windows; Community Gathering Spaces; and shelving, furniture and display units and remodeled interior book drops at both branches. A complete list and description of funding opportunities is available upon request. Please feel free to comment on or contribute to the project by contacting Lyn Crouse, Library System Director, via email at [email protected] or by telephone at 440-322-0244.
