We salute their valor and courage for bringing home the gift of liberty. As the weather gets warmer, we are getting busier, planning more and more activities for you to enjoy. Among those is the THIRD ANNUAL WESTERN WAYNE COUNTY SENIOR OLYMPICS! We are already taking registrations for this big event. More details can be found on page 16. Plans for our 2007 SENIOR FEST are also underway. Tickets are on sale now! Please see page 10 for more information. Pre-registration is required on ALL activities, classes and travel. Your contribution will provide for high quality programs, services and facilities for senior adults of the community. The Northville Senior Adult Services program provides residents of the Northville community, age 50+, an opportunity to participate in activities that improve their health, maintain their independence, learn new skills, provide stress relief and contribute to the community. Your donation may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor. Payment: Pre-payment (cash, check or charge) is required. Make checks payable to Northville Parks and Rec. or Northville Senior Community Center, unless otherwise indicated. Contracted Trips: To pay the full amount for day trips or deposits on extended travel, your check MUST be made payable to the travel agency that is sponsoring the trip. Call the NSCC office to obtain the name of the agency. Cancelled Programs: Please register early to avoid disappointment. Low enrollment will cancel or postpone some classes, trips and other events. Refunds: No refunds will be given on ticketed events unless we can fill the position from a waiting list. Only then will a refund be made. 3 Fitness/Health/Computers Instruction by Rosemary Krest. She is well known in the area for teaching Senior Line Dancing in Novi, Wixom, Farmington and other centers throughout the metro area. Tai Chi Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese discipline that integrates mind, body and spirit. The health benefits include improved flexibility, balance, coordination, circulation, lower blood pressure, increased physical functioning, decreased stress and increased weight loss. Practicing Tai Chi will gently tone muscles without strain, unlike high impact exercises. The Northville Senior Community Center gym is open every weekday from 8:00 to 10:00 am for walkers to use free of charge. On May 15 there will be certified therapists from Heartland Plymouth Court to give you some tips and provide a “circuit” type workout for those interested. Blood Pressure Check Yoga Class Every Month At the Northville Senior Community Center Begins Thursday May 24, 2007 at 9:30 am Second Tuesday, 10:00 am-11:30 am May 8th provided by Westland Convalescent Center. Yoga is an ancient system that is based on relieving tension in the body and mind through the practice of postures, breathing technique and relaxation. All levels are welcome. (Bring a mat.) There will be no blood pressure taken on May 28, since that is Memorial Day. Glucose Check Second Tuesday 10:00 - 11:30 am May 8th, 2007 $70 for ten weeks or $7 per class. Afterward, the Northville High School Jazz Band will provide entertainment and play your favorite melodies. Sponsored by the Hillside Middle School students and staff. At Hillside Middle School. Free. 4:00 - 6:30 pm. Swap the tools you have for the tools you want! Clean out those garages, basements, shops and sheds. We will also accept donated tools that we can sell to benefit the Northville Adult Services Programs. We will be accepting donations right up until the day of the sale. Detroit Tigers, Wednesday May 24, 2007 Housing and Caregiver Day Tuesday, May 8, 2007 Our May 10 vs. Seattle trip has been filled, but come with us on the 24th to watch the Tigers play Los Angeles! The cost is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. The cost includes a free soft drink and a pizza slice or hot dog. We will depart at 11:30 am. Preregistration is required. The Northville Senior Community Center will be hosting this year’s expo. Learn about all of the housing alternatives and care giving services available in the area. Representatives from local senior housing facilities and local senior caregiver businesses will be at the center to answer all of your questions. We will have guest speakers, housing community booths, prize drawings, refreshments and much more. The expo will be from 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. This is a FREE activity and no registration is required. Senior Golf League Thursday, May 3, 2007 Join a great league! We have lots of fun and rotate playing partners each week. The cost is $40 to join, which will be used for prizes and a banquet at the end of the season. We will be playing at the Riverbend Golf Course in South Lyon. League play begins on May 3, 2007 at 10:00 am. Call the NSCC for more information! Wildflower Walk at Maybury Friday, May 4, 2007 The snow is gone! The sun is bright! spring wild flowers are in full bloom at Maybury State Park. This walk is led by naturalist Selena Browne. We will depart at 10:15 am. Those driving independently should meet at the concession stand using the 8 Mile road entrance. The 3/4 mile walk will be over paved trails and lasts about an hour. The walk is subject to weather. Don’t forget your camera! $5 for transportation. 8 “Respect” at the Gem Theatre Thursday, May 10, 2007 Join us for the journey of women from codependence to independence. See the progress of women from property of their husbands to presidents of countries in the 20th century. Hear it through a dramatic musical presentation. Detroit Tigers Games, June 14 and 28, 2007 We will be attending two Tigers games in June. On June 14 vs. Milwaukee and on June 28 vs. Texas. The cost is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. Fathers Day BBQ, Friday, June 15, 2007 Join us at the NSCC for a Father’s Day cookout to celebrate those wonderful men in our lives. After a delicious lunch, we’ll be watching the movie “Flags of our Fathers”, which is directed by Clint Eastwood. The movie chronicles the battle of Iwo Jima. The cost for lunch is $7 and the movie is $1. Pre-registration is required. Lunch is at 11:30 am, the movie begins at 1:00 pm. Grandparent and Grandchild Day, Wednesday, June 20, 2007 Enjoy a day of fun and laughter with your grandchild! There will be entertainment, games and prizes for grandchildren of all ages. We will also be serving up some hot dogs and ice cream. The cost is $10 per person and $8 for children ages 1 through 12. Please be sure to give the age of your grandchild when you sign up. Matthaei Botanical Gardens, Tuesday, June 26, 2007 Come and enjoy the beauty of nature on the grounds of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor. There are numerous display gardens and nature trails for you to enjoy. Each garden is unique and provides visitors with a nice contrast to what you’ll see in the conservatory. You’ll have ample time to browse through the gift shop before you go to lunch. Lunch will be on your own at Zingerman’s Deli. $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. We will depart at 9:30 and pre-registration is required. July 4th Parade and Picnic. Wednesday, July 4, 2007 Join us at the NSCC for this festive day. This is a great place to watch the parade! Lots of fun, food and activities. Coffee and rolls will be served beginning at 8:00 am. Bring a lawn chair! Ride the senior bus or walk along side while we parade the streets. Be at the center before 9:00 am, as the roads will be closed by then. Please pre-register. $8 for lunch. Pinochle Tournament, Tuesday, July 17, 2007 Join us at the Senior Center at 10:30 am for a day of Pinochle frenzy! The cost is only $5 to join and 25 cents a set. Pre-registration required by July 11. 16 Senior Services/Transportation Telecare Medical Equipment Loans Do you need to borrow a wheelchair, walker, cane or other medical equipment? If so, it’s easy to do and it’s FREE. Just return it to us when it is no longer needed so that it’s available for others. Currently we are accepting donations for wheelchairs and canes in good condition. Call the NSCC for additional information! (248) 349-4140. Liquid Nutrition and Focus Hope Pickups will be held on Friday May 25 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Northville SCC, 303 W. Main St. (next to the Fire Hall); (248) 349-4140. Pickups are normally held at the NSCC on the 4th Friday of each month. However, If that falls on a holiday, pickup is the third Friday of the month. Senior residents can receive a telephone call to check on their well-being or to just hear a friendly voice. This program is run entirely by our volunteers and there is no charge to those who sign up for this service. To register, please call the NSCC at (248) 349-4140. Nutritious Meals Hot, nutritious lunch meals are provided Monday through Friday at 11:45 am at Allen Terrace, (248) 231-9950, 401 High Street, for a donation of $2.25. Homebound residents can receive a meal delivered to their home through the Meals on Wheels program. The phone number for this service is (800) 851-1454 or (734) 727-7357 (Wayne County). Transportation Curb-to-curb service $3 each way. Monday through Friday, 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Medical appointments have first priority. Our bus service provides transportation for medical appointments, errands, hair appointments. Call the transportation office at (248) 449-9934 for your reservation at least two days in advance. Monday through Friday between 9:00 and 11:30 am. Requests cannot be accepted at any other time. Punch cards are available for purchase, also. Weekly Grocery Shopping Tuesday: Meijer Friday: Farmer Jack & Hiller’s on 5 Mile Grocery shopping is available the rest of the week also by calling transportation at (248) 449-9934. You must make reservations at least 24 hours in advance. The fee is $3 each way or $6 round trip. If additional stops are needed, be sure to let us know in advance. Shop Till You Drop!
