Pre-registration is required on ALL activities, classes and travel. Your contribution will provide for high quality programs, services and facilities for senior adults of the community. The Northville Senior Adult Services program provides residents of the Northville community, age 50+, an opportunity to participate in activities that improve their health, maintain their independence, learn new skills, provide stress relief and contribute to the community. Your donation may be tax deductible. Please consult your tax advisor. Payment: Pre-payment (cash, check or charge) is required. Make checks payable to Northville Parks and Rec. or Northville Senior Community Center, unless otherwise indicated. Contracted Trips: To pay the full amount for day trips or deposits on extended travel, your check MUST be made payable to the travel agency that is sponsoring the trip. Call the NSCC office to obtain the name of the agency. Cancelled Programs: Please register early to avoid disappointment. Low enrollment will cancel or postpone some classes, trips and other events. Refunds: No refunds will be given on ticketed events unless we can fill the position from a waiting list. Only then will a refund be made. 3 Fitness/Health/Computers Blood Pressure Check Instruction by Rosemary Krest. She is well known in the area for teaching Senior Line Dancing in Novi, Wixom, Farmington and other centers throughout the metro area. Line dancing is a good way to make new friends, socialize with old friends and learn a new dance step or two. Kick up your heels! Call the NSCC for more information. (248) 349-4140. Improve your health with… Tai Chi Classes will resume again Monday, September 10, 2007 $59 for six weeks Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese discipline that integrates mind, body and spirit. The health benefits include improved flexibility, balance, coordination, circulation, lower blood pressure, increased physical functioning, decreased stress and increased weight loss. Computer I: (Beginners Course): Covers Microsoft Word - Basic Tuesdays & Wednesdays 1-3:00 pm Starts August 21, 2007 Computer II: (Intermediate Course): Covers internet and some advanced features of Microsoft Word (Pre-requisite: Computer I) Thursdays 1-3:00 pm Fridays 11:30 - 1:30 pm Bring a floppy disc or buy one from the Northville District Library $25 for each six week session. Pre-registration required. Fitness/Health WALKING CLUB! The Northville Senior Community Center gym is open every weekday from 8:00 to 10:00 am for walkers to use free of charge. Beginning in September, there will be certified therapists from Heartland Plymouth Court to give you some tips and provide a “circuit” type workout for those interested. Please register for the Walkers Club and receive free items along the way. Please contact the NSCC at (248) 349-4140 to register. Sponsored by Heartland Plymouth Court. Other days during the week, a timed CD will be played to enhance your walking. Pilates for 50 Years Plus! On Tuesdays, beginning September 18, 2007 at 6:00 pm, the NSCC will be offering Pilates. This class focuses on exercises for people over the age of 50, providing a series of routines that focus on the back, abs, thighs, waist, hips and derriere. A fun and easy-to-follow intro to Pilates. Please bring a mat or purchase one at class for $25. Instruction is provided by Fitness Rx of Farmington Hills. Ten weeks for $59. Preregistration is required. Senior Kickboxing! Beginning in September, a kickboxing class will be offered on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 9:00 - 10:00 am. Strength Training Light weights with a little gentle Yoga Diane Siegel-DiVita, Instructor Classes are on: Monday, 9:30 - 11:00 am Or Friday, 9:30 am -11:00 am $40 for eight weeks or $7 per class. Learn to comfortably lift weights from sitting, standing and lying positions. This is a nopressure opportunity to improve your overall health. Especially good for those with arthritis and/or osteoporosis. Bring something to lie on (yoga sticky mat, blanket or beach towel). Yoga Class Thursdays at 9:30 am Yoga is an ancient system that is based on relieving tension in the body and mind through the practice of postures, breathing technique and relaxation. (248) 349-4140. . 5 Fitness/Health Massage Therapy Paul has been with the NSCC for almost eight years. He has been a wonderful asset to the senior center. He has given massages to many people throughout the community and they all love him and will miss him very much. He has always been kind, considerate and a pleasure to have at our center. Paul decided to take his life and career in a different direction and will be going back to school this fall. We Paul Najar & Marge Caroselli will all miss him very much and wish him the best success in his new endeavors. Tim Manigold We are also welcoming Tim Manigold, who will be taking Paul’s place. Tim is a wonderful person and we are excited to have him at the center. He is a certified massage therapist from the Golden Institute of Massage in Golden, Colorado. The cost is $1 per person. 7 August Special Events Kensington Boat Ride Wednesday, August 1, 2007 Detroit Tigers Thursday, August 23, 2007 Enjoy a serene cruise of Kensington Lake, followed by a scrumptious lunch (on your own) at Baker’s in Milford. We will depart from the parking lot across from the post office at 11:00 am. We will cruise Kensington at Noon and lunch at Baker’s at 1:30. $12 per person. Pre-registration is required. We will be attending one Detroit Tiger game in August. The Tigers will be playing against Cleveland. The cost is $35 for residents and $45 for non-residents. The cost includes a free soft drink and a pizza slice or hot dog. We will depart at 11:30 am. Pre-registration is required. Lunch With Teens Thursday, August 2, 2007 Northville Senior Adults are invited to join a group of Northville High School students for a FREE lunch. The purpose of this luncheon is to give the students a chance to practice their conversational skills & donate beautiful ceramic projects they’ve made and to give the seniors a chance to get to know some great kids. Book Club Wednesday, August 8, 2007 Join Margaret Gonzales for our monthly book club meeting. The club meets on the second Wednesday of each month at the NSCC at 1:00 pm. This month, we will be reviewing the book “Women Of The Silk” by Gail Tsukiyama. Legal Assistance Wednesday, August 8, 2007 Neighborhood Legal Services Michigan offers free legal presentation and legal assistance. Services are for Wayne County residents 60 years and older. Their experienced staff provides FREE legal assistance to seniors on most civil cases. If you wish to attend, please call the NSCC, as pre-registration is required. 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Services include guardianship, conservatorship, wills, trusts, powers of attorney, senior housing & more! 8 Line Dance Picnic Party Monday, August 13, 2007 11:30 am - 3:30 pm. Join us at the NSCC for a lot of dancing and food! This fun activity is open to the public. After we dance for a while, we’ll enjoy a picnic lunch of hot dogs, chips, salad and beverage. Then we’ll dance some more to work off the food! Pre-registration is required. The cost is $7 in advance or $8 for drop-in fee. Cash & Cruise Wednesday, August 15, 2007 Join us for a fun day of casino, cuisine and cruising. First we’ll stop in Greektown for lunch on your own at the restaurant of your choice and a little game time at the casino. You will receive $15 back at the casino! Then we’ll enjoy a twohour cruise at Diamond jack’s on the sparkling waters of the Detroit River, the world’s busiest international waterway. Steve Wood is here once a month to teach you how to paint. His classes are designed for beginning and intermediate levels of painting experience. Steve has taught over 1,400 students from 9 to 96 years of age how to paint. Discover the artist in you! All you need to bring to class is yourself and the desire to paint. Students will learn to paint some flowers and some seasonal projects, including pumpkins for the fall. Students need to bring four brushes, paper towels, foam plates, notebook & pen, and a three ring binder. Class runs on September 11, 18, 25 and October 2. Doors will open at 5:00 pm, a buffet dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, and dancing will be from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. After five dress attire, please. The cost is $20 per person. There will be prizes and a 50/50 drawing. The Wixom Senior & Community Center is located at 49015 Pontiac Trail in Wixom. Pictures will not be available this year. Pre-registration is required. AARP Driver Safety Program, Wednesday & Thursday, October 3 & 4, 2007 This is a two-day classroom refresher with certified instructors. Learn how to avoid driving hazards. Topics include: how aging affects your driving, physical limitations, current driving laws and defensive skills. The day includes 1/2 hour “on your own” lunch from 12:00 to 12:30 pm. The cost is $10, payable to AARP. We will depart at 8:00 am and will return approximately 4:30 pm. 16 Decorating the July 4th Float Senior Services/Transportation Telecare Medical Equipment Loans Do you need to borrow a wheelchair, walker, cane or other medical equipment? If so, it’s easy to do and it’s FREE. Just return it to us when it is no longer needed so that it’s available for others. Currently we are accepting donations for wheelchairs and canes in good condition. Call the NSCC for additional information! (248) 349-4140. Liquid Nutrition and Focus Hope Pickups will be held on Friday August 24 from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm at the Northville SCC, 303 W. Main St. (next to the Fire Hall); (248) 349-4140. Pickups are normally held at the NSCC on the 4th Friday of each month. However, If that falls on a holiday, pickup is the third Friday of the month. Senior residents can receive a telephone call to check on their well-being or to just hear a friendly voice. This program is run entirely by our volunteers and there is no charge to those who sign up for this service. To register, please call the NSCC at (248) 349-4140. Nutritious Meals Hot, nutritious lunch meals are provided Monday through Friday at 11:45 am at Allen Terrace, (248) 231-9950, 401 High Street, for a donation of $2.25. Homebound residents can receive a meal delivered to their home through the Meals on Wheels program. The phone number for this service is (800) 851-1454 or (734) 727-7357 (Wayne County). Transportation Curb-to-curb service $3 each way. Monday through Friday, 9:00 am-4:00 pm. Medical appointments have first priority. Our bus service provides transportation for medical appointments, errands, hair appointments. Call the transportation office at (248) 449-9934 for your reservation at least two days in advance. Monday through Friday between 9:00 and 11:30 am. Requests cannot be accepted at any other time. Punch cards are available for purchase, also. Weekly Grocery Shopping Shop Till You Drop! Tuesday: Meijer Friday: Kroger on Haggerty & Hiller’s on 5 Mile Mall shopping is on Wednesdays. Bus pickups begin at 9:30 am. August 8 - Twelve Oaks Mall August 22 - Westland Mall Grocery shopping is available the rest of the week also by calling transportation at (248) 449-9934. You must make reservations at least 24 hours in advance. The fee is $3 each way or $6 round trip. If additional stops are needed, be sure to let us know in advance. ADVERTISE IN OUR BUSES!
