SWAYAM LEARNING 126 North Center Street (248) 756-2332 www.swayamlearning.com At Swayam Learning, we believe that interactive and intensive teaching facilitates motivation and interest in students when learning meets their needs. Our classes are designed to meet students’ needs and levels of understanding while advancing and accelerating their skills and abilities to at least three grades higher than their current level. Our curriculum is never static; it is progressive. We are aiming at long-term learning and mastery of skills that will be the tools they can use across any curriculum or subject/discipline for college. Our goal is to cover the gaps in learning, occurring in school in preparation for the exams and college. Thus, we support school instruction by providing additional exposure to advanced skills and concepts necessary for standardized exams and college preparation. We also support homeschooling efforts because our courses allow for a range of knowledge and skills in students while challenging them to apply current and new skills consistently and thoroughly. PLAY We offer accelerated and progressive courses in English Language Arts (grades 2-12), Middle School Physics, Middle School Mathematics, Calculus, AP Calculus, Economics, Speech for Middle School, Speech/Debate for High School, and Watercolor/Pastel/Oil Painting. We also offer separate Semi/Private Tutoring programs that are customized to students’ specific needs in English Language Arts. These programs also run on a semester or short-term fixed schedule with the same goals for progress. Visit Swayam Learning at www.swayamlearning.com. Fall semester enrollment and placement testing to English Language Arts courses will begin in August. Fall semester classes meet for 10 sessions between September-December for 1-2 hour classes, depending on the level. Consistency is key in our curriculum, so what they learn at one level will reappear again at another level but in more advanced ways. Application is the primary driving force of our curriculum as well, so students never escape from seeing how all the concepts need to be applied and intertwined. In this way, students learn not only the core concepts and skills of grammar, reading analysis, vocabulary and writing, but they also see how these support and intertwine with each other to prepare for more mature, higher-level analytical and writing skills. Our curriculum serves to prepare students for standardized exams, higher grade levels, AP/IB courses, and ultimately college. Our instruction is like a college classroom, interactive, task-based, and process-oriented. Each level that we offer builds on old skills and teaches new concepts to apply in new and advanced ways. In the process, we also prepare students for collegiate skills: self-efficacy, responsibility, proactive learning, pride in presentation, adaptive thinking, critical thinking, and oral skills. We have been established since 2005, teaching students in the community with qualified instructors in education and/or in the subject matter they teach. Many of our professors are seasoned, experienced individuals at colleges and universities. 3 IT’S TIME TO PLAY WITH US! NORTHVILLE DISTRICT LIBRARY 212 W. TIPPING POINT THEATER 361 E. Cady Street (248) 347-0003 www.tippingpointtheatre.com PLAY Till We Meet Again May Come Sooner Than You Think! Join TPT for a season opener that haunts! BLITHE SPIRIT by Noel Coward, will open the 2013-2014 Season at Tipping Point Theatre. The wit and wisdom of Noel Coward glimmer again in this much-loved drawing room spirit game. Subtitled “An Improbable Farce” by Coward, “Blithe Spirit” presents novelist Charles Condomine torn between two lovers: one dead, and one alive. At the top of the play, Charles and his wife, Ruth, are preparing for a dinner party with a medium, Madame Arcati, as research for Charles’ newest novel The Unseen. What should be an amusing evening of observation turns on its head when the unlikely Arcati inadvertently resurrects Charles’ first wife – Elvira. Only seen by Charles, Elvira is soon creating trouble between Charles and Ruth. The improbabilities continue to unfold in Coward’s most hilarious comedy, as one séance leads to another, resurrections lead to deaths, and adages like “‘till death do us part” and “parting is such sweet sorrow” are taken to new heights! BLITHE SPIRIT runs from September 1 through October 13, 2013. The curtain rises at 8:00 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays, with matinees at 3:00 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday. A special matinee performance has been added on Wednesday. The theatre is located at 361 E. Cady St. in Northville. Tickets are $29 to $32 for adults and $27 to $30 for students and senior citizens and are available now by calling the box office at (248) 347-0003. LOVE, LOSS AND WHAT I WORE by Nora and Delia Ephron October 25-27, 2013-Special Event* A show about women and the clothes they wear! In this heartfelt comedy by chickflick favorites, Nora and Delia Ephron, clothing is used as a vehicle to access some of the most vulnerable moments in a woman’s life. Shopping for undergarments is transformed from a mortifying experience to a symbol of womanhood, a birthday outfit becomes a story of acceptance, and a bathrobe comes to embody the relationship between mother and daughter. Through a collection of monologues, the all female cast of “What I Wore” reminds us that what we wear flourishes more than our outfit; it accessorizes life’s most pivotal moments of love and loss. *not part of the SeasonPass. Cady Street (248) 344-0497 www.northvillearts.org PLAY “DIMORPHISM” A SOLO EXHIBITION BY TERRY LEE DILL September 6 – September 28, 2013 Opening Reception is September 6, 2013 (First Friday) Artist’s Talk at 8:00 pm Can a building be autobiographical? Yes, in the hands of artist-architect Terry Lee Dill. For the past 20 years, Mr. Dill has conceptualized fantastical buildings as metaphors of his daily life. His drawings -- elaborate creations of black ink and gold leaf, shot through with imagery of nature, religion and desire -- are constructions entirely for the mind to explore and enjoy. There are hints of Dr. Seuss, M.C. Escher and Erich Mendelsohn in this work. As a result, “Dimorphism” will appeal to adults and children alike! Terry Lee Dill worked after high school in heavy construction on one of the first nuclear power plants in the United States, as the assistant to the head of structural engineering. He went back to school and received first an associate of arts degree in architectural engineering, then a B.F.A. in painting and sculpture from Drake University with the help of the first art scholarship awarded by that school. He earned both an M.A. and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa before he moved to New York City, where he won three New York Foundation on the Arts Fellowships (the first person to win such Fellowships in both sculpture and architecture). He holds an M.A. in architecture from Cranbrook Academy of Art, has taught at Detroit’s College for Creative Studies, and has lectured on his work at numerous universities, including Stanford, Yale and Harvard. He continues to work on commissioned art projects, developing new architectural concepts including the design and fabrication of one of the smallest houses in Los Angeles. UNDER THE (INSPIRED) INFLUENCE Friday, October 4 through Saturday, October 26, 2013 Opening Reception, First Friday, October 4 from 6:009:00 pm What inspires an artist? Personal mythologies, guardians and guides, spirits and ancestors, fairy tales, folklore, music, dreams? Eight artists were invited to share their stories and the themes that influence their work and move them to create. Participating artists: Anita Andersons, Renee Dooley, Mary Fortuna, Diane Hawkey, Leann Meixner, Juana Moore, Kate Paul, Mike Sivak This Exhibit is organized by Jeff Cancelosi. The show will open in the Art House’s upper gallery with a reception, 6:00-9:00 pm, Friday, September 6. There will be an artist’s talk at 8:00 pm the night of the reception. The show will continue through September 28 during Art House gallery hours (Wednesdays-Saturdays, 1:005:00 pm). For additional information, call (248) 344-0497 or visit “http://www.northvillearts.org”. The Art House is located at 215 W. Cady Street and is a facility of the Northville Arts Commission.
