Le Parc national de Port-Cros, premier parc national marin en Europe, a été créé en décembre 1963. Il s'étend sur
700 ha de superficie terrestre, avec les îlots de Bagaud, du Rascas et de la Gabinière et 1300 ha en mer. Espace
témoin, il rassemble un grand nombre des espèces terrestres et marines caractéristiques de la Méditerranée
occidentale.
Son action s’étend également à l’île voisine de Porquerolles dont il gère les 1000 ha d’espaces naturels qui lui ont été
remis
en dotation par l’Etat. Il administre le Conservatoire botanique national méditerranéen de Porquerolles chargé de la
sauvegarde
de la flore sauvage et des variétés fruitières menacées de Méditerranée.
En collaboration avec les collectivités locales, il participe à la gestion des espaces naturels acquis par le
Conservatoire du
Littoral sur la presqu’île de Giens et le cap Lardier. Il intervient auprès de la Communauté d’agglomération
Toulon-ProvenceMéditerranée en tant que conseiller scientifique et technique dans la gestion des anciens Salins d’Hyères.
