All Board meetings are open to the faculty, parents, and parish members. Anyone wishing to discuss a school issue at the meeting must contact the chairman at least five days prior to the meeting. All parents enrolling children in the school are automatically members of the association. There are four meetings a year. These meetings are for the purpose of becoming aware of what your school has to offer your children. They also update you on events that are related to education. The goals of this group are to ensure the future of St. Anthony School; to enhance the relationships between students, staff, family and Parishes; and to raise the remaining funds to cover the current year’s total cost for educating St. Anthony students. REGISTRATION Kindergarten screening and registrations will be conducted in the spring. The age requirement for children entering kindergarten and first grade is the same as that of the Oconto Falls School District, namely five and six years old by September 1st. Registration usually takes place in the early spring for the coming year. However, registration will be accepted at other times. The parents of new students are encouraged to register in person before the opening day of school in the fall. Elementary Grades pre-registration - $25.00 fee is due by March 1st for the following school year. Pre-registration allows us to better plan for the next year. Preschool registration begins in May - $25.00 fee 5 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TUITION Tuition is payable as per the tuition agreement. Base tuition rate for full-time enrolled student: $2,350.00 $1,485.00 special rate for Participating Parish Member with $1,045 Parish Discount Discount for 2nd full-time enrolled student: $50 Discount for 3rd full-time enrolled student: $100 Base tuition rate for half-day 4K/5K student: $1,292.50 $880.00 special rate for Participating Parish Member with $412.50 Parish Discount Additional Noon Hour Supervision fee for 4K students coming from OFES: $220.00 Additional fees: $30.00 Playground Supervisor Fee per family (Grades 1 – 5 only) $25.00 Book Fee per student due at registration. Participating Parish Member: Catholic education is a ministry of your local Catholic parish which assumes part of the cost of the education. A Parish Discount is available to families that are registered at an eligible parish where they should regularly attend church services and contribute to the support of the church. Currently the following parishes have agreements with St. Anthony School to provide their members with a Parish Discount: St. Anthony Parish, St. Patrick Parish (Stiles), Holy Trinity Parish (Oconto). POLICY #3200-Policy on Tuition The Total Board of Catholic Education shall annually establish tuition fees for the school and religious education. Proper consideration will be given to those unable to meet tuition requirements. Tuition: Tuition is made up of the following categories: 1. Base Tuition: Applied to all administrative costs associated with the operation of the school. 2. Book Fees: Applied to all consumable books. 3. Parish Discount: Participating parishes pay the remaining cost per parish student for participating members. Out-of-parish students, their families and parishes are expected to be responsible for this balance. Many parishes within our Vicariate will pay subsidy for every student who comes here from their parish. Please check with your parish for more information. This cost may change and will appear on the Tuition Agreement Form. 4. Playground Supervision Fee: Applied to the cost of the playground supervisor. TUITION PRESCHOOL Tuition for Preschool 1. Base tuition rate for 2 days a week program 2. Base tuition rate for 3 days a week program Additional fees: $25.00 Materials Fee $650.00 $800.00 Tuition is payable as per the tuition agreement. 6 A. All tuition fees are due and payable on or before August 15. A completed, signed, tuition agreement must be on file for each enrolled student. Three payment plans are offered: 1. One-payment plan. Payment in full on or before August 15 A 1.5% discount will be applied if tuition is paid in full by this date. 2. Two-payment plan. First payment due on or before August 15 and second payment due the first day of school after Christmas break. 3. Monthly-payments plan. First payment due on or before August 15. Payments two through ten (September thru May) are due on the first of each month. B. At any time the family may make special arrangements with the principal for an alternative tuition plan and this plan will replace the above plans. This detailed arrangement will be put in writing and signed by the principal and the family. Moreover, a payment must be made on or before August 15 in order for the student to be admitted on the first day of school. C. Tuition assistance is available for elementary school only. Please contact the principal. This matter is kept completely confidential. D. If you are experiencing temporary financial difficulties that may affect your current payment plan, please immediately contact the office before payments are considered late in order to discuss an alternative payment plan. Tuition Collection Policies A. Students will not be admitted on the first day of school unless the August payment has been made by the family. B. Outstanding balances will not be carried over from one year to the next. All payments for the current school year must be made by May 1 of the current school year. C. If tuition payments have not been received by the 15th of the payment due date as determined by the payment plan, a late fee of $5.00 per week will be assessed until the payment has been made. D. If payments are not received by the school on or before the due date, the following actions will take place: st 1 Reminder 2nd Reminder 3rd Reminder 4th Reminder Actions Taken By the School for Non-Payment of Tuition Family will receive written notification from the school of non-payment 2 business days after the missed due date. Family will receive written notification from the school Business Manager on the 15th of the month following the missed due date. Late fees will be assessed. Family will receive written notification and a phone call from a Total Board of Education officer of non-payment 30 business days after the missed due date to discuss and make tuition payment arrangements. Late fees continue to be assessed. If payment has not been received within 45 business days after the missed due date, the matter will be referred to an attorney for small claims court collection. The student will be suspended from school until the account is current. 7 SCRIP PROGRAM What Is Scrip? Scrip is a term that means “substitute money” and it is a popular fundraiser because families do not have to sell products for revenue. When you purchase scrip, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use scrip to purchase everyday expenses like food, gas, clothing, and other essentials. All scrip purchases will earn revenue for St. Anthony School. (St. Anthony School buys scrip from Great Lakes Scrip Center at a discount and re-sells the scrip back to the families for full face value.) Scrip Reimbursement Each scrip purchase generates a rebate for St. Anthony School. Half of this rebate will be given to the school and the other half will be applied to school tuition. St. Anthony School families are encouraged to have their extended family members participate in using scrip because the credit from this participation will be applied to the family’s account. Reimbursement Policies A. Rebate checks will be issued in May. Rebate checks will be issued only for amounts greater than or equal to $10.00. B. Currently enrolled families who earn rebates after April 1 will have their rebates carried over to the next school year. If the family does not enroll their child(ren) the next school year, the rebate will be considered a donation to the school. C. New families registered for the upcoming school year will start earning rebate credit after July 1. D. Total rebates issued for the school year cannot exceed the total cost of tuition. FUNDRAISING OBLIGATION FOR ELEMENTERY SCHOOL Tuition covers only a portion of the current school year’s total cost to educate each St. Anthony student. In addition to tuition, other funding sources include the following: subsides from Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, St. Patrick Parish and St. Anthony Parish; St. Anthony School Home and School group; Tuition Assistance; Endowment; Lumen Christi; and restricted and non-restricted donations. (For example, the per pupil cost for the 2013-14 school year was $4,451.00.) Parents of St. Anthony students are members of the Home and School group. The goals of this group are to ensure the future of St. Anthony School; to enhance the relationships between students, staff, family and Parishes; and to raise the remaining funds to cover the current year’s total cost for educating St. Anthony students. In order to raise these funds, the Home and School group will develop and host fundraising opportunities to be held throughout the year. Each family has an obligation to participate in these fundraising opportunities by working 20 hours of fundraising time or to pay a Fundraising Obligation Fee of $500.00 per student. For the 2014-15 school year, Home and School has an obligation to raise approximately $57,000. 8 Elementary School Fundraising Obligation Policies A. Each family must work 20 hours of fundraising time. B. All fundraising time for the current school year must be completed- or scheduled to be completed - and documented with a Home and School representative no later than May 1. C. If a family completes only a portion of the 20 hours, the remaining hours will be prorated and converted into a Fundraising Obligation Fee. This fee will then follow the tuition collection policy and must be immediately paid on May 1. Late payments may result in late fees as stated in the Tuition Collection Policies of this handbook. D. Families choosing not to work 20 hours will pay a Fundraising Obligation Fee of $500.00 per student. This fee will be treated as tuition. PRESCHOOL MANDATORY FUNDRASING ARGEEMENT All Preschool Programs require $250.00 worth of fundraising efforts or equivalent donation. DISCIPLINE The student who is not willing to cooperate and is a discipline problem is hurting himself as well as other members of the class. Students posing such problems will be given due warning. If such warnings are not heeded, the parents will be asked to confer with the teacher. It is our sincere hope that all parents of students will recognize the need for disciplinary policy, and will extend their complete cooperation in its implementation. We urge you to take an interest in your child’s classroom and learning achievement. POLICY #5114 Policy on Suspension and/or Expulsion The reasons justifying suspension or expulsion from St. Anthony School should be as serious as they are rare. Even when such reasons exist, other avenues must be explored before the decision to suspend or expel is reached. Two general situations may lead to suspension or expulsion; both must be verified by evidence: 1. When the moral or physical well-being of the student body or staff is endangered. 2. When there is prolonged and open disregard for school authority. Suspension is of a temporary nature and is used only until the reason for the suspension is removed. Expulsion is permanent and must be reported to the local public school district administrators. PARENTAL CONCERN Parents are required to follow established procedures for expressing concerns or complaints. A. Parents confer first with teacher(s) if the grievance is against the teacher(s). If not satisfied, confer with the administrator (suggestions: teacher, parent, and student be present). B. If not satisfied, the parent may appeal to the Total Board of Catholic Education. C. Appeal to the Total Board of Catholic Education: 1. The Appeal must be in writing and must: a. Identify the person against whom the grievance is filed. b. Identify the specific grievance to be heard in the appeal. c. A copy of the appeal must be given to the person against whom the grievance is being filed. 9 2. The board shall decide whether or not to hear the grievance appeal based on three questions: a. Were the prior procedures (A.B.) attempted seriously? b. Does the matter of the grievance have the gravity to require hearing appeal? c. Is there documentation? (This includes subject matter, dates, signature of involved parties). D. Parents with a grievance against the administrator must contact the Board of Education. Note: This policy establishes a means by which parents can express their concerns and complaints. Parents are discouraged from expressing any concerns and complaints outside of the guidelines (i.e. approaching board members or school personnel in public outside of the classroom or in the classroom in the presence of students). BUSES All students who ride the bus after school must get on the bus at St. Anthony School and ride to Oconto Falls Elementary School. Students who go home with someone else on the bus must have written permission from parents. Please review the bus rules frequently. If you have any questions about your child’s bus routes, you may contact the bus garage at 848-4460. Bus drop off and pick-up will be on Franklin Street. SAFETY / LEAVING THE PREMISES Our existing school safety procedures have been reevaluated and adjusted to ensure that all staff members know exactly what to do in the event of a crisis situation. If evacuation is necessary we will walk to the Oconto Falls Library. The secondary safe place is Washington Middle School. In case of evacuation all families will be called. The entrance doors to the school office will be open, during office hours, on Franklin St. and the school parking lot. For the security of the children, the school doors will be locked at all times. For admittance beyond the office, church and lobby area, all visitors must sign in and obtain a visitor’s tag. There are a few exceptions when signing in will not be required: 1. Hours before 7:45 AM and after 3:10 PM. 2. If programs or events are held in the classroom or downstairs areas. Children are to remain on the school grounds during recess and lunch periods unless they go home for lunch. If for some reason, a parent wishes his child to leave the school grounds during the noon hour, a request must be written and presented to the teacher. If a child is not following regular bus procedures, or changing buses, a note is required. DRESS Students are encouraged to wear clothes that are conducive to the learning environment. Play clothes are strongly discouraged. Parents are asked to use good judgment in this regard and to offer their children guidance in choosing their attire. POLICY #5132 Student’s attire will be appropriate to the school setting. 1. No “biker clothing” is to be worn. This includes the tight shorts and knee length styles. 2. Shorts are to be of a length that reaches down to the fingertips when the arms are extended straight down their sides. 3. Shorts are to have a hemmed cuff. No “cut-offs” of any kind are to be worn. 4. There are to be no mesh type shirts and tank tops worn. Graphics should be appropriate for a Catholic Elementary School. 10 5. Snow pants and boots are required for children 4K-4 at recess-boots for grade 5. 6. Shoes-No flip-flops. Please try to buy non-marking soles. This will save the janitor many hours. Parents will be called to bring different clothing if a student arrives inappropriately dressed. All students are outside at recess. Please see that your child is dressed appropriately for each day’s weather. WINTER WEATHER During winter months and in wet weather all elementary students in the grades are expected to wear boots. This is requested in the interest of good health and good housekeeping. If your child has winter shoe-boots, please remind him/her to bring his/her shoes or sneakers with him. During inclement weather, we will follow the Oconto Falls School District in closing of the school. If school is closed due to inclement weather, the announcement will be made over the local radio stations. (WOCO – Oconto, WQLH, WGEE, WNFL, WIXX – Green Bay, WNAM – Marinette, WTCH – Suring). Most announcements are usually made by 6:30 A.M. Preschool 4K and 5K students should follow the guidelines listed below. Clarification for 2-hour delays No Preschool or ½ Day 5K Classes 5K Extended Day Students are scheduled to come to school. They will follow the same schedule as a full-time enrolled student. Clarification for 2-hour dismissal No Class for any child attending only the St. Anthony 4K Program. 4K Students coming from OFES & 5K Extended Day Students will follow their regular schedule and dismiss early with all the other full-time students. PHYSICAL EDUCATION All elementary students must participate in the Physical Education Program unless a note from the family doctor is presented to the teacher of the class. Students should wear clothing suitable for this class. The instructor will specify proper apparel. REPORT CARDS Report cards are given out quarterly for grades 1-5. They must be examined and signed by parents and returned to the teacher. GRADING SCALE The grading scale for St. Anthony School will be “A” 90-100; “B” 80-90; “C” 70-80; “D” 60-70; and “F” below 60, with tests counting towards one-third of the grade and daily work two-thirds. Policies regarding tardy or absent work will be determined by each individual teacher. These policies will be discussed within the classroom. 11 CONFERENCES Parent-teacher conferences are held twice a year. At this time you will be given a written evaluation (report card) of your child’s school performance. Families will be notified as to the exact date and time. Parents should feel free and are encouraged to confer with the teacher at any time after school. Call for an appointment. TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION Communication with the teacher is encouraged. We ask that you do not call the teachers during the teaching hours. Before 8:05 A.M. or after 3:00 P.M. are excellent times to clarify communications with your child’s teacher. Additionally, the office is a business phone. Calls by children should be made rarely and only in extreme necessity. TIME OF ARRIVAL Elementary Students who walk to school, and students whose parents provide transportation to St. Anthony School, are to arrive by 8:05 A.M. Please see that students do not arrive any earlier than 8:00 A.M. for the start of the school day. Preschool Students should arrive by 8:25 A.M. and be picked up at 11:00 A.M. Full lunches are served at St. Anthony’s daily. Menus are printed in the Dateline. Parents are welcome to eat hot lunch with their child, provided they notify the kitchen, at least 1 day ahead of the day they wish to have lunch. LITURGY The children will have the opportunity to participate at Mass or Prayer Service once a week. Grades 5K-5th attend Mass on Wednesday. Each classroom takes a turn with preparing the liturgy. Parents are encouraged to attend Mass on these days. The children also attend Mass on all Holy Days. We ask that everyone dress respectfully for our celebrations. PRAYER At St. Anthony’s School, time is given to prayer. Students pray several times daily in each classroom. This practice is intended to develop and enhance students’ personal prayer life. It is also intended to support the family’s practice of daily prayer. Students have the opportunity to pray the rosary and The Stations of the Cross. 12 COMMUNICATION Every Wednesday, you will receive a weekly envelope that will have any important information and the school newsletter called the "Dateline" enclosed. This envelope should be signed by the parent and dated then returned for the following week. This applies to all students. In order for the school to maintain good communication with the families, we need to have this envelope returned immediately. ATTENDANCE Regular attendance is essential for successful school progress. However, a student should not attend when he or she is ill. Students who become ill will be sent home. Parents will be notified and parents will provide the transportation. When a student is ill and cannot attend school, parents must phone the office. The office opens at 7:45 A.M., Monday through Friday or you may leave it on the office voice mail. When the student returns to school he or she should bring a written excuse. If an early dismissal is needed for a student, a written request must be made by the parent. This is done to ensure the safety of your child. Whenever a student is going to be absent for some other cause, the parent shall contact the principal before the absence occurs. All students are required to go outside for recess. Parents should not send notes requesting their child be kept in during recess for “runny noses, sore throats, or colds.” Please keep your child at home if they show these flu type symptoms. Teachers have outdoor responsibilities and cannot be responsible for students that are ill and must stay in the classroom. TARDINESS A student arriving after the scheduled time will be counted tardy. A note of explanation or a phone call would be appreciated. HABITUAL TRUANTS Beginning with the 1998-99 school year, a habitual truant is defined as a student who is absent from school without an acceptable excuse for part or all of five or more days on which school is held during a semester. Habitual truants are reported for all grades. STATE STATUTE ON ATTENDANCE Section 118.15 Compulsory school attendance. (1)(a) Except as provided under pars. (b) to (d) and sub. (4), unless the child is excused under sub. (3) or has graduated from high school, any person having under control a child who is between the ages of 6 and 18 years shall cause the child to attend regularly during the full period and hours, religious holidays excepted, that the public or private school in which the child should be enrolled is in session until the end of the school term, quarter or semester of the school year in which the child becomes 18 years of age. Section 118.16 School attendance enforcement. (1) In this section: (a) “Habitual truant” means a pupil who is absent from school without an acceptable excuse under sub. (4) and s. 118.15 for either of the following: 1. Part or all of 5 or more days out of 10 consecutive days on which school is held during a school semester. 2. Part or all of 10 or more days on which school is held during a school semester. *For further clarifications, please request to see the handbook. 13 HOMEWORK Students may be expected to do some studying at home. Spelling is important. Basic facts in Arithmetic need continual work. Library reading must be done consistently at home. Social Studies and Science require reference work and study. Religion classes require reflection. Language composition work will sometimes be required. These are examples of what you might expect home for work. Studies not completed during school hours become homework. BOOK CARE Students must take care of the books given to them for their use. A backpack is required (no wheels) for taking books home. Students are responsible for any damage done through carelessness or neglect. We ask students not to mend books at home. If a book tears, it should be reported to the teacher and it will be taken care of. This is also true in regard to our newer library books. No reference books are permitted out of school. Reimbursement for text books will be assessed when excessive damage (beyond normal wear and tear) is noted. NON DISCRIMINATION CLAUSE St. Anthony School shall not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, creed, political affiliation, physical, mental, emotional, or learning disabilities, handicap, gender, gender orientation, age, national origin, citizenship, martial or parental status, ancestry, color, or any other reason prohibited by state or federal law. POLICY ON HARASSMENT POLICY #5160 (GBDB) It is the policy of the educational programs governed by the Diocesan Total Board of Catholic Education to maintain a learning and working environment that is free from any type of harassment. No employee, volunteer or student associated with these programs shall be subjected to any type of harassment. It shall be a violation of this policy for any employee, volunteer or student to harass another employee, volunteer or student. Each administrator shall be responsible for promoting understanding and acceptance of, and assuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws and Board policy and procedures governing harassment within the educational/catechetical program or office. Violations of this policy or procedure will be cause for disciplinary action. POLICY ON SEXUAL HARASSMENT POLICY #5170 (GBDB) It is the policy of the educational programs governed by the Diocesan Total Board of Catholic Education to maintain a learning and working environment that is free from sexual harassment. No employee, volunteer or student associated with these programs shall be subject to sexual harassment. It shall be a violation of this policy for any employee, volunteer or student to harass another employee, volunteer or student. Each administrator shall be responsible for promoting understanding and acceptance of, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal laws and board policy and procedures governing sexual harassment within the educational program or office. Violations of this policy or procedure will be cause for disciplinary action. 14 Anti –Bullying Procedures for St. Anthony Students St. Anthony School believes that every child should feel safe and secure in the school environment. Therefore, we do not tolerate bullying or harassment in any form. If bullying does happen, all students should be able to tell anyone and know that all incidents will be dealt with promptly. Definition: Bullying is repeated and unjustifiable behavior intended to cause fear, distress and/or harm by a more powerful individual or group against a less powerful individual or group, unable to effectively resist. The possession or use of such by employees, volunteers or students is not permitted in the aforementioned buildings or on the grounds or property owned, used or operated by the parish, school or religious education program. For the purpose of this policy, a “weapon” is any instrument or device designed primarily for use in inflicting death or injury upon a human being or animal, and which is capable of inflicting death upon a human being when used in the manner for which it was designed. Additionally, any instrument or device of any sort whatsoever which is actually used in such a manner as to indicate that an individual intends to inflict death or serious injury upon the other, and which, when so used, is capable of inflicting death upon a human being, is a weapon. Weapons include, but are not limited to, any handgun, rifle, or other firearm, dagger, razor, stiletto, switchblade knife, or knife having a blade exceeding five inches in length. Facsimiles of weapons used in a threatening fashion are subject to this policy. Dangerous objects include, but are not limited to clubs, nunchakus, brass knuckles, knives, butterfly knives, and stun guns. It is illegal to discharge a firearm in the school zone. Police shall be notified immediately if an assault or battery occurs resulting from use or threatened use of a firearm, weapon or dangerous object on the grounds. When possible, such dangerous objects shall be taken from the person. Parents of students found in possession of such dangerous objects shall be notified. Any student in possession of a firearm while participating in any school, parish, regional or diocesan program of religious education and youth ministry, shall be immediately suspended pending a hearing before the local board responsible for the aforementioned program. For purposes of this policy, the term “firearm” includes any weapon designed to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive, the frame or receiver of any such weapon, a muffler or silencer for such a weapon or an explosive, incendiary or poison gas. The normal consequence for such an action is expulsion from the program no less than 12 months. Re-admission of the student at the end of the expulsion period will be based on the recommendation of the principal/administrator to the local Total Board of Catholic Education. A student expelled under the provision of this policy shall not be admitted to any Catholic school or parish/regional/diocesan programs of religious education and youth ministry within the Diocese of Green Bay within that 12 month period, unless the principal/administrator, in consultation with the office of Total Catholic Education, meet with and discuss the situation with the principal/administrator of the school/program from which the student was expelled. To be considered for admission, the burden of proof shall be upon the student to demonstrate a willingness to comply with all school/program regulations, pose no threat or harm to others, and participate in regular counseling sessions to determine progress. REGULATION FIREARMS AND WEAPONS 1. The safety of students, faculty/catechists and staff should be of paramount consideration in decisions regarding disciplinary actions against students violating this policy. 2. If a student brings a weapon to school/religious education building, the administration must be reasonably assured by a competent professional that the student does not pose future danger to others before returning to school/program. 3. Police should be notified immediately if an assault or a battery occurs resulting from use or threatened use of a firearm or weapon by a student. 16 ATHLETICS St. Anthony elementary students have both girl and boys basketball teams. Students in grades 3-6 may participate. Academic performance standards are enforced. The athletic Director and coaches arrange schedules. Regulations of extra-curricular athletics in the elementary schools in the Diocese of Green Bay are followed. POLICY #6145.21 (D/B) The Diocesan Board of Education has clearly stated that the primary purpose of Catholic Education is to educate and develop mind, spirit, and body. It also clearly affirms the importance of providing physical education instruction within the school day and wholesome athletic experiences for all students as integral aspects of a total school program. ELIGIBILITY: It is a privilege to participate in athletics; it is a privilege to represent a school/parish. *Eligibility to compete on a parish team will be determined by the Principal/Religious Education Coordinator and the Athletic Director. **Eligibility on the Parish team will be determined by enrollment/participation in day school or St. Anthony/St. Patrick’s Religious Education program. (6th grade non-Catholics may continue to participate upon graduation from the day school in 5th grade). ***Eligibility will depend on students being in good standing which is based on academic effort, attitude, attendance and conduct, both in school and at parish functions. BICYCLES / SCOOTERS Bicycles/scooters are parked on the west playground. To ensure safety, we ask that the students riding bicycles/scooters to school walk their bicycles/scooters on the playground to and from the street. FIELD TRIPS / CHAPERONES Field trips are permitted on the basis that they support the grade level curriculum. Each request is given individual consideration. Chaperones VIRTUS / Background Check – All chaperones must have attended a VIRTUS training session and have a background check on file. VIRTUS training gives out much needed information on keeping our children and vulnerable adults safe from predators and inappropriate behaviors. The training covers the warning signs of abuse, what to do if you suspect abuse, and how to structure your activities so that it doesn’t happen. The school is required to run a background check on all those completing this training. Chaperone form – All chaperones must have a signed “Guidelines for Field Trip Chaperones” form on file. PLAYGROUND RULES 1. Monkey bars – use hands to go across, no hanging from knees and no sitting on the top. 2. Kickballs, footballs, etc. – Play with the balls away from the school windows. Tell a supervisor if a ball goes out of the playground. No balls are allowed on the environmental play area. 3. No climbing on the fence. 17 4. Jump ropes – Use for jumping only. 5. Language – Only language that is appropriate inside the classroom will be allowed outside. 6. Cooperation – Students should try to include everyone who wants to play. If another student is bothering you or your game, tell the supervisor. 7. Outside – Students are to remain outside the entire recess and should obtain permission to go indoors. 8. Visibility – Students are to be in an area where they can be seen by the supervisor at all times. 9. Playing on high snow banks is with supervisor/teacher discretion. 10. Snowballs are not allowed. 11. Tackling games are not allowed. PLAYGROUND SUPERVISORS: PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES. Violations – Students who violate rules the first time will be asked to stand against the outside wall for 5 minutes. If a second violation occurs on the same day, the student will be given another time out for 10 minutes. If the student receives 3 violations in 1 week, that student will miss 1 noon recess. TITLE 1 One of the services provided through the public school is a federally funded program entitled “Chapter 1.” Chapter 1 is designed to provide children with extra help in reading. Children will be involved in small groups or individual learning experiences targeted to meet each student’s needs. The work will supplement his/her regular classroom work and will be performed at times not to conflict with the basic reading and/or math instruction time and special subjects. On a weekly basis, the Chapter 1 teacher will also work with the children in the classroom in small groups or work cooperatively with the classroom teacher in a whole group setting. Children are selected through test results, teacher recommendations and/or if classroom performance indicates that additional help is needed. A letter will be sent home stating whether they are in the program. Chapter 1 is not an “Exceptional or Special Program.” Instead, it provides an opportunity for additional remedial education for regular education students. Chapter 1 is a very positive learning experience for the children. The "one-to-one" attention enhances their self-concept and the use of hands on materials and manipulatives show children how much fun learning can be. Chapter 1 is available to our students through your tax money. Any St. Anthony student participating in this program may be bused to either Oconto Falls Elementary or Washington School, or services may be provided in our building. Parents will be informed. 18 LEARNING DISABILITIES A "Learning Disabilities Program" is available through the public school to those students who exhibit unique and complex learning problems. These problems are due to a disorder which exists within the child and interferes with the ability to read, write, spell, do math, organize and acquire information. The classroom teacher may fill out a referral form on a child whom he or she feels may exhibit these learning problems. The parent then will receive an "intent to refer" letter. A parent signature is needed on this form before any testing begins. The assessment tests are needed in order to find out more about the child's learning difficulties and the grade levels at which they are performing. If a learning disability is suspected, the child must be tested by a team of professionals which consists of a psychologist, a special education teacher, a speech and language therapist, if needed, and other specialists. The team of professionals will meet to discuss the test results with the parent. If the test scores are compliant with the state guidelines for the program, the parent is offered a placement for the child. The special Education Teacher will complete an individualized educational plan for the child, which consists of specific skill areas the child needs to work on. The child will be taken to a learning disabilities classroom to work on these subjects and then main streamed to his/her regular classroom for the other academic classes. This program is available to our students through your tax money. Any St. Anthony students participating in the program are bused to either Oconto Falls Elementary or Washington School. SPEECH Speech services are available through the public school. Sessions are held here at St. Anthony’s. Referrals are made by the classroom teacher. EMERGENCY FORMS Please be sure there is an updated, signed emergency card on file at school for your child. We use this form to determine who has “legal rights” concerning your child. If there are restrictions, please supply the school office with the court documentation. Anyone that you would like to be able to “sign out” your child during the day must be listed on the form, this includes siblings. MEDICATION PROCEDURE No medication shall be given to a student by any school personnel unless written instructions for dispensing the medication, along with written authorization from the parent/guardian authorizing school personnel to give the medication. In order for school personnel to dispense the medication, parents must complete a “Medication Consent Form.” Medication to be given in the school MUST have: - A written order from the physician. - Student's full name on the container. - Name of the drug and dose. - Time to be given. - Parent/legal guardian permission. Medication will be taken, by the student at a designated time, supervised by authorized personnel. It is the responsibility of the student, if appropriate, not school personnel, to get his/her medication at the designated time. Limited quantities of the medication should be kept at school. Parents must notify school when the drug is discontinued and the dosage or time is changed. If the medication is resumed, a new order must be received. 19 Parents must sign a permission slip for teachers to give a child over the counter medicine, including cough drops. Aspirin or Tylenol can be stored in the office for your child and administrated on a needed basis. All over the counter medicine is the family’s responsibility to provide. Medicine must be provided in their original non-expired containers. Medicine should not be kept in your child’s backpack or desk (except for epipens or inhalers). If this applies to your child, please complete the medication forms provided in this handbook. We are called to care for this gift. Therefore, we will learn how to nourish and take care of our bodies so that we can be healthy and strong. The intent behind having a Wellness Policy is to curb the ever increasing rate of obesity among our young people. Obesity and malnutrition in general can increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease risk factors, poor bone development leading to fractures, and psychological and emotional problems related to size discrimination, just to name a few. All of these not only impair a child’s quality of life; but can result in absences from school, lack of concentration, and poor test scores. St. Anthony School is implementing this policy by requiring wellness education and practices that include but are not limited to the following: *health and nutrition education Each class will study a unit on nutrition and physical health Posters on nutrition and food facts will be displayed in the cafeteria *physical activity Students will have physical education classes 2 times a week Students will have a morning and noon recess (totaling 40 minutes) *safety/protection education Students will participate in “Protecting God’s Children” curriculum (Focus: recognizing and responding to abuse situations) Students will study a unit on general safety (fire, swimming, and internet) *school based activities to promote student health and wellness Staff exercise program (sets example for students) School garden: students will help plant and harvest items when possible Food Demonstrations: invite guests to show how to make healthy snacks and meals. St. Anthony School 4K program educates students who are 4 years old by September 1st and are potty trained. We take into account that children this age have a wide range of ability levels. Because of this we have a curriculum that provides for individual differences. In the 4 year old program we work toward socialization by enabling each child to accept differences and diversity in their world. Thirdly, the children will have free choice activities that allow for personal interests and self-expression. Discipline Policy: We expect the children to come to school and be themselves.
