FROM THE PASTOR’S HEART
Recently on a Sunday evening, I quoted Dr. Doug Bischoff, the Next
Generations Minister at First Baptist Church of Houston, Texas. He wrote
an article addressing the spiritual fallout of the next generation. The
pastor wrote, "The problem today isn't that many of our church kids are
rejecting the faith of their parents. The problem is that too many are
accepting the apathetic, impersonal, mediocre faith of their
parents." (Southwestern News, Fall 2014, p. 22)
Whether you agree with this statement or not, it should cause us to
evaluate our own faith influence. Ask yourself, if everyone lived out your
faith, would our society be better, worse, or about the same? Let’s be honest, all of us have room
for improvement when it comes to our faith.
How do we develop a passionate faith? Here are nine requirements:

We’re on a journey…off the map!
Vacation Bible School has come and gone but not without lessons learned! I tend
to be a bit of a slow learner so I didn’t realize this until day 2 of VBS, but in our
theme this year, “Journey off the Map,” I came to realize that this journey is the
journey we take with Jesus! Duh, right?! I know! As we live in this world, we no
longer live by sight but we live by faith! It is more than just the snacks, games,
and crafts of Bible school; this relates straight to our very lives.
This means as Jesus calls us out, we go, not always knowing what’s in store but
knowing He is in control and that He is good. Throw the map out the window…you won’t need it for this
trek!
Here are a few things going on in the student ministry for the month of July:
• Summer Bible Study :: July 7, 14, 21, 28.
–We have seen great attendance in our Bible study this summer! God is using this time to
grow our students in their faith, evangelism and discipleship! Summer Bible study continues
every Tuesday night from 7-9pm throughout the summer for middle/high school students!
Camp
Table Rock :: July 13-17
•
–Please pray for our students to be impacted once again as they enjoy another year at Camp
Table Rock!
• St. Louis Double Header :: July 30-31
–What could be better than an evening with the beloved St. Louis Cardinals and a trip to the
coasters at Six Flags?! Not much! Our double header trip to St. Louis should be a great
closing to the month of July!

From the Children’s Ministry
As I write this we are in the middle of our Journey Off the Map Vacation Bible
School, and my heart is overjoyed at the response we have had this year. We
have almost 90 children enrolled and have so many wonderful kids from around
our community. All of this would not have been possible without the amazing
volunteers who committed their time, energy, and passion to making VBS a
success. Words cannot do justice for the gratitude and appreciation I feel. I know
God has used this week to change eternity for several of these children.
This month we continue to prepare for associational camp at Baptist Hill. We are
taking three girls and five boys to camp, several of whom have not accepted
Christ. Please commit to pray for these kids during the weeks of July 20-31 as
camp is in progress. Pray these campers will come to know the love of our amazing God. Thank you
again to all those who donated money to send a child to camp; we appreciate it more than you know!
As I think about these two major summer events and all we have done together as a church family, it
reminds me once again how blessed I am to be a part of First Baptist Church!

Blessings from the Library
From the Shelves
I checked a book out of the library intending to return it. Instead I bought
a copy for myself. Praying the Prayers of the Bible by James Banks
(242.7 BAN) turned out to be a very practical book for me. First point in
its favor is it is more Bible than Banks. That is to say, Banks quotes eons
of Scripture. Quite an accomplishment since the book is only 270 LARGE print pages. So nice of the
publisher to consider us senior citizens by using large print. Somehow senior citizen-hood has
brought with it insomnia as well as vision problems for me! At two in the morning I am wide awake.
Deigning to count sheep as inane and ineffective, I pray. My prayers have fallen into a never-failing
pattern. A childlike list of thanks turns to awe as I suddenly realize the power required to give me
those blessings. This is not all bad, but can be expanded to my improvement. Banks has shown me
how. Each very short chapter offers less than a page of introduction by Banks, then Scripture after
Scripture centered on a single theme follows. Sometimes Banks ends the chapter with prayer
starters. I haven't used those yet as my heart has gotten the point before I get there. This may not
sound like your cup of tea, but it meets my need. Apologies to both God and the pastor who have
tried by means of Scripture and sermons to teach me to pray. I always need to learn more. The book
was given in appreciation of Martha Martin. God bless Martha and the dear soul who gave the book.

The Hand of God
By J. Wesley Brizendine
Rev. Brizendine shares portions of letters he wrote to his family from the mission fields. From humble
beginnings, he served in Liberia, West Africa to Guam with his wife Genevieve. Their appointment
with the Foreign Mission Board came in 1967.
He tells of first impressions of the people he went to serve. At one service the pay was three
chickens and a pail of rice. This payment was a sacrifice for the congregation. He continues to tell
interesting stories of the culture, housing and food. The missionary couple dealt with snakes,
swamps ‘ju ju’ men, leprosy, and other sicknesses they could not heal. But, there were joys and
triumph along the way plus sad experiences.
Rev. Brizendine’s testimony is “God brought us through the impossible. To God be the Glory, for
indeed he has done great things.” He continues to serve at FBC as Sunday School Teacher even
though Genevieve has gone on to her reward in heaven.
FBC is blessed with dedicated missionaries who retire to continue to support and serve the church.
