Ellin Keene v3 - Bucks County Intermediate Unit #22
THE BUCKS COUNTY INTERMEDIATE UNIT #22 IS PROUD TO WELCOME ELLIN KEENE FEBRUARY 1, 2012 Talk About Understanding Spoken interactions between teachers and students and among students are at the heart of learning. Our oral language is the model upon which students build as they learn to articulate their ideas, explore questions and explain their thinking, yet we don’t often stop to scrutinize our discourse with students. In this workshop, we’ll explore ways in which we can make relatively minor modifications in our oral language patterns that will lead to significant changes in the sophistication of students’ discourse. We’ll investigate ways in which we can encourage student talk that reflects their understanding of texts and concepts more accurately. Participants will begin by discussing the Outcomes of Understanding, a set of markers that indicate whether students understand deeply. In addition, participants will learn about an observation tool they can use with colleagues to analyze classroom discourse and will receive several tools students can use to reflect on their oral language interactions with other students. In the afternoon, participants will have an opportunity to view a demonstration with local students that brings the content into focus for classroom implementation. Ellin Oliver Keene has been a classroom teacher, staff developer, non-profit director and adjunct professor of reading and writing. For sixteen years she directed staff development initiatives at the Denver-based Public Education & Business Coalition. She served as Deputy Director and Director of Literacy and Staff Development for the Cornerstone Project at the University of Pennsylvania for 4 years. Ellin currently serves as Director of Research and Development for the PEBC, as senior advisor to Heinemann Professional Development and works with schools and districts throughout the country and abroad. The workshop will be based on Ellin’s new Heinemann publication, Talk About Understanding: Rethinking Classroom Talk to Enhance Comprehension (Heinemann, 2011) as well as her two previous books, Mosaic of Thought and To Understand.
