PENGANTAR DARI KOORDINATOR / FOREWORD FROM COORDINATOR
INDONESIA RAJA on its second year is collaborating with 17 programmers from
15 cities from all around Indonesia. Obviously a growing in number compared
to last year.
INDONESIA RAJA was initiated by MINIKINO in 2015 as an annual collaboration
project with programmers from various film community and organization all
around Indonesia, to bring Indonesia’s short films to its audience by compiling it into programs
that is designed and considered based on a specific theme, under a big theme; the annual
exchange of short film programs from various regions / cities in Indonesia.
The entire process is carried out based on voluntary work of MINIKINO working team, selected
programmers, and the filmmakers that submit their short films for selection and programming.
The next stage is to working together with screening organizers in each area/cities; to create a
meeting space, watch film together and stimulate the exchange of information, knowledge and
cultural background that would be made possibile from public screenings. Discussions that are
triggered becomes a priceless token of appreciation for all parties involved.
Everyone is working with the same spirit, stimulating social awareness and critical thinking
through the course of watching the film. MINIKINO, together with the Indonesia Raja 2016
programmer, invites us all to watch the films and research INDONESIA RAJA from various point
of view.
Thank you all my friends, let’s celebrate diversity and continue this work together.

KONTEMPLASI
Programmer: Tria Nin | MINIKINO
Duration: 57:28
Age Rating: 13+
Watching films is like placing ourselves in front of a mirror, listening to
a single conversation, reading social reality, watching political events
and observing little things around us which stimulates the audience’s
imagination.
Besides an observation image of the society reality, a film also reflects
the filmmaker’s soul. The short films selected for Indonesia Raja 2016 Bali
bring the audience freely to a contemplative place straight to a sterile silent
space. As illustrated in the visualization collage SILENT, the anxiety depicted in
REVENGE, smells rotten corruption and random emotions of procrastinating in
BIRU.
While the contemplation might just be limited in the film medium, at least
the audience would be able to have new point of views that had been missed.
Such a pause, like the spaces in the rows of sentences. It will be difficult to
understand the meaning without these spaces. Without a pause then life will
just rushes leaving no chance to turn around. All these shorts in Indonesia Raja
2016 Bali program could be some sort of a respite in life.
# Point of Discussion
1. Audience responses after watching the program
2. Did you learn anything from these shorts? What are the messages in these
films? Do you agree or disagree with some of the messages?
3. Do these films remind you of your own life experience or other events?

INDONESIA RAJA 2016: BANDUNG
ON JOURNEY
Programmer: Albertus Wida Wiratama | Liga Film Mahasiswa ITB
Duration: 38:36
Age Rating: 13+
Shorts have been expanded to an open medium of storytelling and
ideas, freeing the creativity of the maker. In the so-called stopover
city Bandung, various filmmakers create diverse kinds of shorts. They
explore the flexibile possibilities with shorts medium and deliver their
very own personal & contextual language.
PULANG, the first film uses only a single still image with voice-over to tell a
memory. LAPAR explore a static long shot accompanied by monologue and slow
pacing. MONTAGE OF EDELWEISS is a contrast to the two first films, exploring
camera moves
and a dynamic new composite whole from fragments of pictures, text, and
music to deliver its messages and ideas. LIE=PRAY is a highlight of seventh
art, combining various art as the language. The closing film in the program is
ANGAN, opening a free personal subjective interpretation for the audience.
These short films might be an incomplete on their way to perfecting
themselves. I believe they need you to join them in their journey of deeper and
wider cinema. Don’t you think so? Enjoy the ride and be careful, just don’t get
lost!

INDONESIA RAJA 2016: DEPOK
UFO-UNIDENTIFIED FILMING OBJECT
Programmer: Caren R Sabatina | Sinematografi UI
Duration 48:00
Age Rating: 13+
Depok is a small municipality located in between two big cities with
similarly rich cultures yet different at some points, which are Jakarta
metropolitan and Bogor-a tourism city. Jakarta is packed with rushing
people and Bogor with its public transportation honking horns all day
and night.
It is never easy to be in between. This creates an assumption that there is
an identity crisis in the city of fancy cafes and banner printing houses come in
abundant, more than the amount of high schools. The aforementioned crisis
is the tendency to imitate another city so as to have the same impression of
it. PEMAIN KE-12, a documentary by Selly Melinda, represents this in obvious
way. It is a story of Persija, a football club which Jakartans are proud of. Jakarta
is not the only one; Java also contributes its culture to Depok filmmakers. In
SIUL SIAL, Dimaz Sri Junanta retells a Javanese tribe belief of a prohibition in
whisting at night. Menunggu Malam by Jeffri Minggar shows an exhausting
night trip in a small town with all of its social dynamics. This might be the
closest representation to Depok.
The program ends with GADIS BERKERUDUNG HITAM DAN MANUSIA SERIGALA
(A Black Veiled Girl and A Werewolf) by Orizon Astonia, which presents a story
about a curios girl who does not obey her mother, sneaking out from home at
night. This film is a conclusion that culture biases that will always exist among
our society. No need to be fearful of this, as in the end, spatial things will never
end in a harmony.
# Point of Discussion
1.Audience’s comments about the film.
2.Wish to get Q&A with filmmakers (if possible)
3.Filmmakers’ response to identity crisis in Depok
PEMAIN KE 12

the society? And are their efforts acceptable among other Jakartans? This film answers those
questions.
12
INDONESIA RAJA 2016: DEPOK

Not every football supporter is an anarchist; there is a deep loyalty behind their high pride.

Award
- Special Mention, Drama|Comedy category, XXI Short Film Festival 2016.
Director’s Statement:
Sex is taboo subject to be talked about in Indonesia especially for school-age children. Adults
are afraid to explain and tend to shy away from the conversation. As a result, little information
available to answer the children’s curiosity about sex. There are a lot of cases in which children
were given incomplete knowledge about sex and sexually transmitted disease and try to keep
the children stay away from sex.
This topic has come to my attention in a long time. I have always been hindered to talk about
sex openly in society. Starting from feeling uncomfortable and my childhood memory, I decided
to raise this issue in a short film THE FLOWER AND THE BEE set in 1990s where most children
seek information from their peer-friends in contrast to the present where most information
is accessible in the internet. This is a period in which obtaining information would require an
active act.

INDONESIA RAJA 2016: JATIWANGI
Programmer: Bunga Siagian & Ismal Muntaha | JATIWANGI ART FACTORY
Duration: 53:49
Age Rating: 13+
Retrospecting on previous Indonesia Raja programs, one overlooked
and unpresented element is the film & video production aesthetic
development. In our opinion it is important to make notes of digital
medium usage in film and video production, the aesthetic output of
it, and any emerging possible movements. These would contribute
to the discourse of Indonesian contemporary cinema discussion.
Therefore as programmers we feel the urge to contribute a program from
Jatiwangi as an observation of works produced from Village Video Festival.
It’s an effort to participate in Indonesia Raja, one of the relatively militant and
consistent short-film program that observes film production development
involcing a lot of programmers and wide coverage of Indonesia areas outreach.
Village Video Festival is a residency-based festival that invites artists to stay
in Jatiwangi for several weeks and to produce artworks related to Jatiwangi
contextually, either for an individual or collaborative work with locals. VVF
produced artworks are digital medium based, which is, as we all know, more
democratic than film medium. Among the implications of digital camera
technology is that it’s technically dynamic, so that it has experimental
possibility for filmmakers, either in choosing the form or in the activism
context. Another essential thing is an ability to remove the boundary between
camera reality and behind the scene reality, so that many daily problems can
be exposed. These three films in this program represent digital spirit, both in
terms of aesthetic choice and a movement.
UUDARAN
Carda Arifin | 2015 | Documentary | 20:00
Digital camera as a highly dynamic medium is used to record
locals’ comments on a rumour of Kertajati airport being built near
their neighborhood. Playfully, the camera is handed over to one
person to another by themselves. The result is, the film is not
only exposing the locals’ perspective on modernity (represented
by an airport with all impacts it brings economically and socially), but also showing locals’
sovereignity and autonomy to deliver their stories to wider public. The locals’ autonomy in this
practical-medium field by VVF and JaF (Jatiwangi Art Factory) is manifested in JaF TV program,
a TV channel intended to pirate national TV program which is dominated by mainstream
media. The premise being, locals create their own TV program content as an alternative or
even as a substitution to the programs produced by mega media.

WARUNG KOPI
Mahardhika Yudha & Mohammad Fauzi (Forum Lenteng) | 2011 |
Documentary | 14:53
One of JaF TV programs, Warung Kopi is a video output of artist
residency in VVF 2011. Warung kopi, or coffee shop in English, has
its social function as a place where people meet up and discuss
issues, be it local gossips, football matches, or nationally hot issues.
“Warung Kopi” pirates news program we often see in national TV (such as TV One), which
usually presents experts to debate on hot issues. Located in a coffee shop, it shows news clips
of national issues within a set-up TV and people discussing it. In this video, locals replace “the
experts” to respond and to discuss big issues.
TONG KOSONG NYARING BUNYINYA
Komunitas Ciranggon | 2015 | Documentary | 20:00
This video offers another aspect of digital medium, which is
archiving. Created by Ciranggon Community, a community aiming
for a media center in their region. This film presents footages
of various social activities among locals which are consistently
recorded in fast month right before Eid Al-Fitr day in 2015. These
were recorded with many devices, from handycam to handphone. It is interesting not only
because of the archiving, but also the documentary approach seen from the minimal shots and
duration length of every shot to keep an activity objective. It is also how certain montages in
arranging the film indicates narrative awareness that the film is (they are) shooting arranges its
own narration and zone.

As an education city, Malang produces hundreds of films every year.
Stating from school/college assignments, film lovers are emerging,

These four shorts in Indonesia Raja 2016 - Malang reflect the
situation and condition of short filmmaking in Malang, where most
of the filmmakers consist of students and film production communities.

SHORT FILMS VARIETY TODAY
Programmer: Ignasius Loyola W.S. | KOFI SUMUT

Film is a moving picture or imaginary events that convey the authors idea with
creativity. Film can be used as “a place to vent thoughts”, expression,
and learning media. A good film would be capable in finding its own
audience.
Filmmakers must understand clearly the ideas to be conveyed to the
audience. However, not all films can enter the realm of thought of
their audience. Short films today want to present films not only about
things outside the maker & audience environment. A film idea should
start from the closest milieu.
The three selected films all started from ideas from the surrounding
environment and can be felt by everyone. The simple real ideas formed through
the filmmaker sensitivity.
SEPOTONG PISANG GORENG tells about two brothers condition struggle to live
in an honest and simple storyline. Meanwhile GUNA-GUNA story of a man who
helped his friend from black magic presented in an art-house style. TANDA,
with a similar style with the second film tells a story about a father’s longing for
his son. The black & white film flaunts boredom, loneliness and lonesome.

Thriller/Fantasy)
Director’s statement:
Guna-guna is black magic culture in Indonesia to control nature, human and physical
phenomena through mystical paranormal and supernatural means. It is beyond human logic.
For example, when we see possessed people, we would only see human screaming in pain with
a slow pace. Guna-guna usually used when breaking up. During a break-up each moments felt
slow and the screaming might only be heard inside the heart.
Through this film I would like to suggest not using illogical revenge when you broke up. I
suggest trying a natural simple loving experience.
I used black and white visual to present black magic could only be countered by white magic.
This film is actually open for your interpretation.

These short films is a result of Pekanbaru young generation with similar
hobbies. The low public interest in short-films making in this area does
not hamper their enthusiasm.
Only one director in Pekanbaru submit his films to the programmer.
Therefore I selected several from his works. It’s a pity that there are
not so many filmmakers in Pekanbaru and perhaps the others are still shy
submitting their works to a programmer.
Themes in these selected films can not be separated from local cultural and

INDONESIA RAJA 2016: YOGYAKARTA
Director’s Statement :
Indonesia has rich folklore stories which most are less relevant with the current situation.
Inspired by Disney, I try to work on a folklore and turns it into a modern version fairy tale with
a hip values.
BAWANG KEMBAR adapted BAWANG MERAH BAWANG PUTIH with reversed character,
BAWANG MERAH (Rara) and BAWANG PUTIH (Puput). Rara is a brave, confident and smart
child while Puput is completely the opposite fearful, naive and dumb. A conflict rises when
Nini Buto Ijo the antagonist character is not actually an evil one. Her most precious statue was
damaged by Rara, obviously she’s angry.
The approach for these antagonist characters are inspired by Ghibli’s conflict without involving
bad guys.
Director’s Profile:
Gangsar Waskito born in Jakarta and grew up in Jakarta. He started active in komunitas film
indie (live shoot), then animation world and was the first feature animation film in Indonesia.
