Timmelsjoch Experience.
Five striking structures and sculptures by architect Werner
Tscholl add a whole new dimension to the mountain. Globally unique, these roadside landmarks not only draw you
for a closer look but also tell you in an unusual, entertaining way about the road building pioneers, the tradition of
smuggling over the pass, Europe’s highest mine at one time,
the Swiss pine’s amazing powers, UFO landings, etc.

5 Attractions, one experience.
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is a fascinating experience for both car drivers and motorcyclists. In fact, many
regard it as Tyrol’s most scenic panoramic route. It leads
from the Ötztal valley over the 2,509 m high Timmelsjoch
pass to South Tyrol in Italy. Completely safe with modern
barriers, the road blends in well with the countryside.

Breathe in the fresh alpine air!
While elsewhere you can only explore the spectacular mountains on foot, here in the Ötztal you can see the scenery the
easy way – thanks to the High Alpine Road. The twelve-kilometre-long pass road up to Timmelsjoch features twelve
hairpin bends and a maximum gradient of ten per cent.
Lush meadows, weathered Swiss pine, Alpine rose, sheep and
goats make the drive an incredible experience. And every so
often you simply have to stop and admire the stunning views.

At 2,509 m, the Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road ranks among
the highest paved passes in Europe. Even in June you may
still see metre-high walls of snow along the road. At the top
of the pass, the extent of the panorama is as impressive as
the mountain air is refreshing. If you want to stop off for a
break, Rasthaus Timmelsjoch serves hot meals all day. Hikers and climbers will be absolutely in their element in the
surrounding Ötztal and Stubai Alps. You can also walk along
the original path over the pass (E5) like the smugglers.

Opening times:
The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is open daily from 7 am
to 8 pm from approximately the end of May until the end of
October. The exact opening date can be found at:
www.timmelsjoch.com
Important information: In accordance with the current Italian
regulations, only cars and motorcycles are permitted to travel on
the Italian side of the pass road. Mobile homes, small buses and
lorries with a max. gross weight of 8 tons, max. width of 2.55 m
and max. height 4 m are also permitted. Buses and lorries weighing over 8 tons, as well as trailers of all types, are not permitted.
Head for the south!
The Timmelsjoch is a popular alternative route to Lake
Garda. Where others are stuck in traffic jams, you can enjoy many unforgettable sights on your way south. Another
attractive option is a trip to nearby Merano. On the road
you will see how the climate becomes much more Mediterranean within a matter of kilometres and South Tyrol’s
famous vines start to cover the slopes. The route on the
Italian side of the pass is quite exciting. Snaking round
nine tights bends, it goes down steeply for 21 kilometres to
Moso in Passiria.
