HOW DO I KNOW?
WHAT DOES IT MATTER?
WHY SHOULD I CARE?
Prentice Hall Biology is our class text. Class time includes
reading, discussions, activities, showing teacher selected
Internet sites, labs, demonstrations, lecture, quizzes, and
tests. Exemplary student work will be posted (without
student identification) on the class website.
Class activities and discussions are valuable
learning experiences that cannot be
reconstructed, therefore attendance is
valuable.
Together, I hope to increase our
understanding and admiration for all
forms of life on Earth.
Students who actively do science
learn and love the subject!
Discipline: Each student is accountable for
his/her actions and behavior. Classroom
storage areas are off limits to students. We
do not cause a problem for ourselves or
others.
The only food or drink allowed in the room is
a clear water bottle. All Orem
Junior High School, and
Alpine District policies will
be followed. This includes
tardies, attendance, and
disruptive behaviors. Please
refer to the printed policies in
your Jaguar Journal.
Expectations:
Respectful
Responsible
Strive for excellence
Interventions:
Warned and/or moved
Call parent/guardian
Office referral
Homework: Generally one assignment is
given each week to reinforce what is studied
in class. Homework assignment due dates
and upcoming tests are posted in the
classroom and on PowerSchool. I
recommend studying for tests. Learning
Objective sheets are handed out at the
beginning of each unit - they contain
EVERY CONCEPT that will be covered on
the Unit Test.
Scores: Within a week of being turned in,
assignments and tests are graded and posted
on PowerSchool. Please keep all graded
assignments and compare them with
PowerSchool scores.
State Final: Students take the Utah State
Criterion Referenced Test in May. This test
counts on your 4th term grade.
Bell Ringers: A quick assignment is given at the
start of each period. Answers for five class periods are all written on the assigned Bell Ringer
paper. A Bell Ringer may not be made-up if you
are Tardy! Make-up for excused absences occurs
before school.
Labs: Lab materials are not toys, and require
caution during use. Students with inappropriate
behavior during labs receive an alternative
assignment. Lab make-ups are on PowerSchool.
Grading: Grades and assignments may be
accessed from PowerSchool:
http://powerSchool.oremjr.alpine.k12.ut.us
Grades are posted using the last four digits of
your student number every two weeks. These
lists show current grade and any missing work.
Students have one school day for each excused
absence to complete make-up work for full
credit.
If you complete and turn in every assignment ontime and take all tests and quizzes, I guarantee a
grade of “C” or better! Late work is subject to a
drop of 20%. Grades are based on total points
earned.
(NOTE: Extra credit is given on a random basis
during quizzes, tests, labs, assignments, etc.)
Other extra credit is not given or accepted.
Grade Scale
Grades are based on the following grade scale:

Honors Credit: To receive honors credit you
must do the following:
• Earn 93% or higher each term.
• Complete one “honors” project each term (see
Biology Honors handout)
✴Due 2 weeks before the end of the term.
•Complete an individual Science Fair project.
Honors is shown as an “H” for citizenship on the
final 4th term report card.
eMINTS computers
This class uses laptops in our classroom. Each
student MUST have a completed check mark on
the Alpine District Acceptable Use Policy to use
these computers.
Research has shown that students participating
in the eMINTS program become better problem
solvers and use higher order thinking skills.
Students accept the responsibility to use the
computer appropriately both online and in how
they transport and use the computer.
Quizzes are taken only once. Tests may be retaken and your second score will be recorded.
Citizenship: Each student is expected to exhibit
satisfactory citizenship. Outstanding citizenship
must be earned by exemplary classroom behavior. Discipline problems cause a drop in citizenship. Comments about behavior are posted on
PowerSchool under Teacher Comments.
Student Activities: Students who miss class for
student activities (e.g. student council, plays,
sports, etc.) have one class period for each
excused absence to complete make-up work for
full credit.
