We made the first production suspension mountain bike, the E.S.T., back in 1991. That’s over 20 years of full suspension development experience! If there is one thing we’ve learned over those 20 plus years, it is that great bikes are born when we go racing. From the winningest team of all-time, the Volvo-Cannondale team in the 90’s to the Cannondale Factory Racing, Sho-Air and OverMountain teams today, our athletes inspire us to make bikes that enable them to perform to their best. The dual personality Jekyll is launched Its switchable-on-the-fly geometry and suspension systems greatly expand the usability range of a single bike and create the OverMountain category 7 CANNONDALE TECHNOLOGIES MOUNTAIN BIKE TECHNology Cannondale mountain bikes are engineered to be the lightest, strongest, stiffest bikes out there, which makes them the fastest on the mountain. We design them from a total performance perspective where the goal is to design an entire bike to be the best performing, lightest, strongest bike in its category. We call it “System Integration.” You will see the “Si” logo on various components of our bikes. For example, our Lefty front suspension which includes the super-light, super- strong and stiff Lefty unit, a LEFTY-specific steerer tube and a light weight, one piece, investment forged (OPI) stem. The entire Lefty system is lighter, stiffer and stronger than a separate fork-stembar assembly could ever be. These Cannondale innovations make our Scalpel, Jekyll, Trigger and Flash fantastic rides and the leading edge of MTB technology. They also bring the performance of our Trail and Trail SL bikes to a level unknown in their price category. Read through this Bike Junkie’s Bible II - The Book of Mountain. Read what others say about how Cannondale mountain bikes handle and ride as many of our mountain bikes as you can. Then you’ll understand - and be able to explain to your customers - why Cannondale mountain bikes are the best available. Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain LEFTY Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain Lefty solves the equation that puzzles conventional forks: how to be light, stiff, smooth and strong - all at once! No other front suspension combines high stiffness, low weight, smootHNESS under load, durability and strength as Lefty. None! So, on a Lefty, you will ride faster, smoother and with greater control than any conventional fork. Don’t take our word for it. Here’s what Pua Mata of the Sho-Air/Cannondale mountain bike team had to say after her first Lefty ride: “I was excited, but at the same time, beyond skeptical. I mean, have you ever taken a look at the Lefty? …The stability and stiffness was like no other…for all of these years that I have been riding and racing mountain bikes, I had the belief that I never experienced any flex in my fork… and it took the Lefty to point out how wrong I was. I had been experiencing it and it was this first ride, on this bike that I was actually NOT experiencing it … let me just say that I think I’m in love.” Here’s why Lefty is the best… and Pua is in love… KEY LEFTY TECHNOLOGY LEFTY IS LIGHT As light as a cross-country fork, as tough as beefy, all-mountain forks. With LEFTY, you ride further - and faster - because you’re pushing less weight. LEFTY IS STRONG Lefty’s dual clamp design, with the larger shock tube mounted above the smaller one, spreads loads along the full length of the steerer tube, making the entire structure stronger. Even the lightest LEFTY equals conventional - and heavy - dirt-jumping forks in destructive testing. Dual Crown Inverted Design With the larger, stiffer fork tube on top where it can more effectively fight flex and add strength, and dual crowns connecting it solidly to the headtube, the Lefty’s unconventional design is simply the lightest, stiffest, strongest way to build a fork. A conventional fork’s big, beefy tubes, brake arches and oversized axles are all attached to a single point: the bottom of the steerer tube - via a stout (heavy) crown. All of that weight and force are transmitted up through the bottom of the steerer (necessitating more bulk and weight). LEFTY IS STIFF The inside of Lefty’s tubes are square. That square-in-square structure virtually eliminates twisting flex to provide instant steering response, sure-footed handling and more confidence on technical single-track. Conventional round-in-round tube fork structures are inherently flexy. To reduce flex they use massive brake bridges, oversized axles and beefy single crowns - all of which make them heavy (and slow). square-in-square design The needle bearing races form a square-in-square interface between the inner and outer fork legs, preventing the two tubes from rotating relative to each other like the round-in-round design of traditional forks. This contributes to Lefty’s precise handling. LEFTY IS SMOOTH Lefty’s square-in-square tube design is supported by low-friction needle bearings which provide smooth rolling that sliding bushings simply cannot match. It’s like the difference between pushing your hand across a table top and rolling it over on a couple of round pegs (try that). When the rider is at the limit, hard on the brakes and counting on precise steering and bump absorption to stay on the trail…that’s where Lefty’s needle bearings shine and conventional forks bind. LEFTY IS EASY The inverted, sealed design keeps the bad stuff (like water and dirt) out and the good stuff (like oil) in. It doubles Lefty’s service intervals vs. the competition so you can spend more hours on the trail, making LEFTY easy to live with and ride, often. Lefty is the smoothest, most precise front suspension available. It needs to be ridden to be believed. Try one. You’ll be in love and so will your customers – just like Pua! lefty w/ Hybrid NeedleBearing technology Hybrid NeedleBearing System Friction-free needle-bearings provide unmatchably smooth suspension under all loads, while the lower glide bearing provides additional support for improved stiffness and steering precision as the fork moves through its travel. Durathon Sealing System A comprehensive internal and external sealing system keeps the good stuff in and the bad stuff out, allowing for more than double the time between recommended services than our competition. 13 SETTING UP LEFTY FOR A TEST RIDE To help a potential customer really understand the magic of Lefty, it is important to set the sag to give them the best ride possible. Just follow the tables below… SETTING SAG: Sag is the distance the LEFTY compresses when the bike is statically loaded with your body weight in your riding position. Set it according to the LEFTY travel. Sag is set by changing the air pressure through the Schrader valve at the bottom of the LEFTY. DYAD Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain Developed in partnership with Fox, DYAD is the heart of Cannondale’s OverMountain bikes, Claymore, Jekyll and Trigger. DYAD’s Elevate and Flow modes optimize the bike for either climbing and screaming across flat trails or descending at high speed and with confidence by optimizing geometry and providing the right travel and shock for the terrain ahead - all at the flip of a switch. DYAD makes our OverMountain bikes truly all-mountain. Switch the dyad to elevate mode to climb: - The Elevate chamber is engaged - Shock travel is reduced - The spring rate becomes steeper and more progressive for snappier pedaling response - Head tube angle is steeper for quicker steering response - BB is higher - Rider weight is centered In Elevate mode, you are in position to attack climbs and fast trails. Switch the dyad to Flow mode to descend: - The Flow chamber is engaged - Shock travel is increased - Spring rate becomes plush and linear - Head tube slackens - BB drops - Rider weight is moved rearward DYAD. One shock, two modes and the ultimate all-mountain rides… at the flip of a switch. 17 SETTING UP DYAD FOR A TEST RIDE For a customer to really feel the dramatic changes DYAD brings to riding, it is important that you take a couple of minutes to set up the system for their weight. RECOMMended air pressure: DYAD RT2 shock sag best performance range is 33%-40% of total travel. The table below contains values for this target range. If, after setting sag, you find that you want more or less, choose the next lighter or heavier rider weight range from the table. 29” WHEEL 26” WHEEL RIDER WEIGHT POSITIVE NEGATIVE POSITIVE NEGATIVE REBOUND SETTING POSITIONS # clicks counter clockwise out from closed KG BAR BAR BAR BAR # CLICKS SETTING SAG: 45-49 11.2 9.5 13.0 12.1 12 50-54 12.3 10.5 14.3 13.2 12 Set the DYAD shock to the long-travel Flow mode (cable released). ECS-TC removes the flex and play from the links and pivots that connect the front triangle and swingarm. Eliminating that flex results in a bike that responds instantly to inputs from the rider giving maximum performance, control and connectedness. Bikes with ECS-TC are renowned for giving their riders an instant feeling of familiarity and high confidence under all conditions because bikes with ECS-TC respond instantly and precisely to rider input. Three components make up the ECS-TC SysteM: 15MM CLAMPED THRU-AXLES By clamping the shock link and swingarm directly to oversized thru-axles, the axle itself becomes a structural element preventing twisting flex. DOUBLE PIVOT BEARINGS Placing two bearings side by side in the rear pivots eliminates twisting play in the cartridge bearings for instant responsiveness. WIDE STANCE BEARINGS All links have the bearings placed as far apart as possible to maximize stiffness. Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain About ECS-TC Joe Parkin, Editor of Bike, said: “Because the rear end is so stiff (thanks to ECS-TC) that it’s really easy to feel how the rear wheel is behaving...I am as comfortable riding the Jekyll as I am wearing a well-worn pair of Levis.” HOLLOW BOX SECTION Hollow Box Section - Large I-Beam construction creates a super lightweight, thin-walled linkage. This link adds increased torsional rigidity to the rear suspension, giving the rider better pedaling efficiency and more precise cornering. Like the ECS-TC System, the Hollow Box Section works to better connect the rider to the bike and the bike to the mountain. System Integration (Si)/One Piece Investment Forging (OPI) System Integration is a core Cannondale philosophy in which components are literally designed to integrate with the structure of the bike to provide lower overall weight and enhanced stiffness. A great example of System Integration is our OPI stem. It is investment forged out of a single piece of aluminum and provides a super-stiff, ultra-light linkage between your hands and the front wheel. 21 BallisTec Carbon Fiber Construction bb30 BallisTec Carbon Fiber construction lets us create bicycles that are incredibly light, torsionally stiff (resistant to twisting) and strong. BB30 is the lighter and stiffer crank standard that Cannondale introduced to the bicycle industry at the Tour de France in 2000. By moving from the traditional small diameter steel BB spindle to an oversized hollow aluminum spindle, we made the crank significantly lighter and stiffer. By eliminating the external BB cups and housing larger bearings inside an oversized BB shell, we reduced the weight and increased the stiffness. Rather than keep a great thing to ourselves, we released the BB30 standard freely to the industry so that everyone could benefit from a lighter, stiffer, more efficient system. BB30 is so light and tough, the same cranks used in our elite road bikes are also found in our top mountain bikes. the precise layup and strength of ballistec makes our speed save and zero pivot seat stays possible Once a new BallisTec frame design has passed all of our extremely tough destructive and fatigue testing, we enhance its stiffness and feel through the use of even stiffer high- and ultra-high-modulus fibers. The end product is a frame that is super light and tuned perfectly for torsional and vertical rigidity. BallisTec construction also yields Cannondale frames that, even though they are ultra-light, are more durable than most aluminum frames as well. SmartFormed Alloy At Cannondale, we have spent thirty years perfecting the aluminum bicycle. SmartForming is a combination of processes and techniques that allow us to tightly control tube shapes, wall thicknesses, internal transitions, material integrity and welds. It allows us to put material exactly where needed for stiffness and strength while eliminating every last unnecessary gram of material. Nobody else comes close to our level of expertise in aluminum Taper butting and smooth welding help eliminate stress risers so we can build lighter, stronger frames. Different combinations of processes are used for different frames, depending on need. SAVE Micro-Suspension Technology SAVE technology absorbs vibration. Trail vibration reduces wheel traction, compromising speed, handling precision and fatiguing the rider. The SPEED SAVE in our carbon F29’ers use specific carbon fiber layups and flattened chainstays to create a micro-suspension system that improves the rolling of the tires along the ground and increases rear-end stiffness for more precise handling and greater power transfer. We do the same shaping with our alloy F29’er to achieve the same micro-suspension action. The shaping of SAVE chain and seat stays is a very clear visual cue for you to use when walking a customer through a SAVE-engineered Cannondale frame When you “jump” on the pedals of a SAVE-engineered bike, that force is transmitted to the rear wheel, driving you forward! On a SAVE-engineered bike, you’re in for one smooth - and fast - ride whether in carbon or aluminum. SmartForming is manipulation of the tubes through: Hydroforming Mechanical Shaping Double Pass Welding Swaging Airforming Taper Butting 3D Forging SmartForming allows us to put aluminum only where we want it, to shape it, and to finish it with smooth, strong welds, allowing the bike to be as light as possible, as strong as it has to be and finished like the piece of fine sculpture it is. 25 MATCHING RIDERS TO CANNONDALE BIKES MOUNTAIN bike riders come in all shapes, sizes, levels of experience and desire but they all want the same things: To ride faster up the climbs To ride more precisely through technical trails To descend with greater confidence Cannondale mountain bikes are unequaled in their ability to provide what riders want. Helping a customer find their perfect new Cannondale mountain bike is a matter of understanding their level of experience, assessing their riding form and budget and helping them select the Cannondale bike(s) that fit those factors. Asking just a few questions and listening carefully to the answers will help you and your customer find the right Cannondale bicycle: What kind of riding do you want to do with your new bike? Where do you ride? With whom do you ride? WHAT ARE YOU RIDING NOW? As you listen to your customer, you will learn the type of riding they want to do and develop a sense of their experience level. Now you will be able to match them with the Cannondale that delivers the ride of their dreams. Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain As you introduce your customer to the Cannondale you have selected, it is important to walk through the features engineered into the platform and explain their benefits. It is even better if you have ridden the Cannondale you have selected - and others in the same category - so you can speak to its individual ride qualities with first-hand experience. Most importantly, have your customer ride it. That way, they will find their perfect ride and be happy they came into your store and spoke with you. HOW TO TEST A MOUNTAIN BIKE Bike Junkie’s Bible II // Mountain No matter how many great things a customer may have heard or read about a bike, no matter how much their riding buddies have said, the truth is in the riding. Only by riding the bike will they feel how it accelerates, handles, communicates the trail surface, climbs and fits. Setting up your customer for a great test ride is as easy as 1, 2, 3: Adjust the bike to fit Set-UP the suspension according to their weight with the Cannondale Suspension Setting App (available in the App Store AND AT Google Play) Send them out to ride… When they come back in love with the bike, focus on the model level (that will determine the overall weight of the bike and the performance of the components - like drive train and brakes) and their budget. The model grids for each bike in the back of this booklet will help you with that.
