Special Topic “Russian Federation”
2013. Vol.12 Special Topic “Russian Federation” Major Power of Eastern Europe with the World’s Largest Land. The Russian Federation is the country that boasts the world’s largest area at 17.09 million sq. kilometers. From the Baltic Sea to the Pacific Ocean, the country that extends 10,000 kilometers and spans 9 time zones from east to west, where up to nine hours of time difference exist by region. With population and industry concentrated in the western area near Europe, and as a result of its cultural ties, Russia is classified as part of Europe in general. At the sametime, the country spreads across to the Asia with the Ural Mountains, which is cutting across Russia, crossing over 2000 km from north to south, creating a borders between Europe and Asia. In Russia, a great portion of which is in the subarctic zone, the cold of winter is very severe, and in the city of Oymyakon, an especially wellknown town in the Siberian permafrost, the temperature of minus 71.2 deg. C was recorded in 1926. In the capital of Moscow, although the average low temperature in February is minus 9 deg. C, (average for 1981 to 2010) it can rise above 30 deg. C in summer and you can see children playing in fountains enjpying the precious hot summer days. ① Landscape of Russia ② 02 ③ ④ Landscape of Russia Rapid economic expansion fueled by abundant resources The Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, and the Russian Federation, which introduced a market economy, has achieved rapid economic growth, particularly since 2000 with GDP growth rate over 4.5% from 2000 to 2011. Russia has promoted free trade by participating in the WTO (World Trade Organization), aiming at further economic development. Abundant natural resources, starting with petroleum enabled Russia to achieve rapid economic growth. Russia is second in the ⑤ ⑥ ⑦ ⑧ ⑨ ⑩ ⑪ ⑫ world production of both petroleum and natural gas, and is also blessed with metal resources such as iron, copper ore and nickel. Local traditions are alive while European culture is embraced Indicative of Russia’s good economy, in the capital city of Moscow there are many Western luxury cars, and it has come to be known as one of the countries with the highest prices in the world. The storefronts are filled with imported goods from Europe, from foods to daily sundries, and no vestiges of the Soviet era distribution queues for purchasing black bread. While Russia is coming to accept European culture, tradition lives on in the daily life and food culture of the people. The lifestyle of enjoying a family vegetable garden at the “dacha” out in the countryside on the weekends and on long holidays is unchanged even now. What is more, “borscht”, which is a vegetable soup with a beet base, and the “piroshki” bread side dish, beef stroganoff, and “pelmeni” Russian-style steamed dumplings, are loved both in Russia and world wide. ① Moscow-City with skyscrapers lined up along the Moskva River. It was the tallest building in Moscow at the time. ③ Red Square, which has the meaning of "beautiful square.", together with Lenin's Tomb, where Lenin lies, is a symbol of the socialist system in the past. Nowadays, all sorts of events are held there, and it's beloved as place of recreation for the public. ④ An ornately decorated department store. In the show window, there are products arrayed from Russia and abroad, and it's crowded with people enjoying shopping. ⑤ The National Academy Bolshoi Theater, Russia's represent ballet and opera theater. ⑥ The statue of Dostoevskii, a symbol of the Soviet era, stands vigilant over the people even today. ⑦ Beautiful wall paintings and ornamentation adorn a station of the Moscow subway. ⑧ Small shops that are invariably located inside stations or on street corners sells not only drinks and magazines, but also all kinds of including such things as clothing and toys. ⑨ Massive apartment building, built in the Soviet era, still standing. ⑩ A trolley bus, indispensible as a means of transport for the public. ⑪ Traditional foods---kasha, a buckwheat gruel, and piroshiki. ⑫ Borscht, the vegetable soup that epitomizes Russian cuisine. ⑬ Okroshka, a soup that uses chilled kvass, a drink made from fermented black bread. It’s characterized by a distinctive sourness. ⑭ Landscape of Ekaterinburg, in the center of Russia. Group of Companies Danone Unimilk Danone Industria, Russia, Chekhov Maintenance Manager Mr. Igor Sandalov In 1919 , in the City of Barcelona, Spain, a small yogurt factory was established. The yogurt plant, under the name of“Danone”(which was taken from the nickname of Daniel, the son of the founder Mr. Isaac Carasso) later moved its headquarters to Paris and grew into an international food products enterprise included affiliated brands such as“Evian”mineral water and“LU“ cereal. This time, we visited the Chekhov Plant of the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk in Russia. Danone dair y products Over 20% market share The Danone Unimilk plant is situated one hours drive to the south of Moscow, within a dairy 04 The Chekhov Plant of the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk is in the suburb of Chekhov, Moscow. With its modern facilities, it boasts the largest production capacity within the company. farms region covered with rich greenery. Danone first entered into the Russian market in 1992 to import the products they produced in Europe. Delicious and safe, and with its refined package design, Danone products have been welcomed by Russian consumers, and it become a brand you can see at every Russian Breakfast. In response to the growing Russian market demand, together with the start of Russian domestic production, Danone merged with the Russian dairy products producer Unimilk, and expanded its production capacity. Throughout the country, 30 factories have been set up and are producing over 130 products. Not only for the domestic market, these products are also exported to neighboring countries. The Chekhov Plant, which we visited, has the largest production capacity in the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk. It can produce maximum 800 tons of dairy products per day -yogurt 19 %, soft cheese 29 %, and yogurt drink 34 %. At Danone, to match the diverse tastes and needs of consumers, they are developing products independently in each sales country. From the taste to the bottle shape and then to the package design, the products sold in Russia are no exception; basically these are“Russian original,”planned and developed in Russia. S afe and delicious products Created under strict quality control. What sort of approach does the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk take in producing dairy products in Russia, where a vast land area of approx. 9000 km from east to west, and for delivering them to the consumer while they are fresh? We heard from Mr. Igor Sandalov, the Maintenance Manager of Group of Companies Danone Unimilk. “To deliver delicious and safe products to the customer, we must meet the quality standards set by the Russian Government, and in production we also follow an even more strict independent quality assurance system. As part of this, we would like to introduce a system which we call the“3 -day Guarantee”. We pick a sample of our products, keep them in a special environment for three days and inspect whether they comply with our company’ s quality control or not. If they cannot meet the standard, all the products including the already shipped portion are immediately removed from the market. In this way, we always provide safe products to the customer – by checking the actual products under a special environment. Moreover, with respect to expiration dates, Danone sets shorter time than those of other manufactures, this is a proof that the‘yogurt is alive.’ ” H itachi Ink Jet Printers to high-speed lines Hitachi Ink Jet Printers support the strict quality controls of the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk. There are 40 Ink Jet Printers under operation at the Chekhov Plant for printing the expiration date and quality control information on the finished product package. We understand that the reason for installing Hitachi Ink Jet Printers were their great adaptability to high-speed lines. We heard from Mr.Alexey Trach, ① ② ③ ① Based on Danone's proprietary strict quality controls, safe and delicious products are produced. ② The products are primarily for the Russian market and are“Russia original”planned and developed in Russia. ③ Beautiful package design is one of the special things about Danone products. It boasts a broad lineup from fruit flavoured yogurt to cereal-combination products. 05 There are 40 units of the PXR-H450 W models in16 lines. Ingenuity has been employed by memorizing the print settings on each line in all of the Ink Jet Printers to enable swapping and repositioning the lines. the Packaging Maintenance Manager of Group of Companies Danone Unimilk. “Actually, in the past we were using Ink Jet Printers from another manufacturer , but when we increased the package line speed, we had trouble with the print quality. Then we consulted with Forintek and were advised to try with the Hitachi Ink Jet Printers. As a result of our tests, we found no printing problems. We got a feel for its capacity to adapt well to a highspeed line. Thus we decided to switch to Hitachi Ink Jet Printers at the Chekhov Plant. Currently, there are 40 PXR ① series Ink Jet Printers on 16 package lines. These are all PXR-H450 W models for highspeed printing.. “We decided to standardize with the PXR-H450 W, the highspeed printing machine, for reasons of compatibility. The high-speed package lines that can handle a maximum of 36 ,000 boxes per hour are limited so there was no need to renew all the 40 units with the high-speed printing machines but giving consideration to r e p o s i t i o n i n g t h e l i n e s and backup in the event that trouble were to arise with the Ink Jet Printers, we decided to purchase all PXR-H450 W ② ④ ③ ⑤ ① Hitachi Ink Jet Printers can provide stable printing on high-speed lines. ②③ The clear printing is free from spreading or misalignment. ④ The operating panel displays Russian language and has an easy to use interface. ⑤ We sell Hitachi Ink Jet Printers in 108 countries. We work hard to bring attractive products to our customers around the world; the multi lingual operation manuals are one of the examples. 06 models.” S uperior reliability and durability Backing up stable production Customer chose Hitachi PXR series for its capacity to highspeed lines. So how is the user evaluation for Hitachi Ink Jet Printers? We heard from Mr. Eduard Poveljev, Packaging Supervisor of the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk. ” We don’ t have any trouble with Hitachi Ink Jet Printers despite the environment of high heat and humidity. It supports stable production. BREAKTHROUGH COMPANIES The PXR-H450W is inserted into a package line that is capable of a maximum of 36,000 units per hour. Superior reliability and durability minimize downtime and support stable production. At the same time, maintenance cost control is achieved. When we were using the Ink Jet Printers of another manufacturer we often had trouble, and the staff who were in charge of maintenance always wore clothes stained with black ink. Since we adopted the Hitachi Ink Jet Printers, the downtime has been dramatically reduced, and as the person in charge of the package line, I am comfortable with using it.” The maintenance costs of Ink Jet Printers have come down, since service requests have decreased compared with our Danone Industria, Russia, Chekhov Packaging Superviser Mr. Eduard Poveljev previous supplier. Superior reliability and durability, which characterize the Hitachi Ink Jet Printers, have realized less downtime together with running costs. At Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems, to offer our superior Ink Jet Printers to customers all over the world, we aggressively conduct a design that takes into account all sorts of different user environments which can differ according to the country and region together with multi- Danone Industria, Russia, Chekhov Packaging Maintenance Manager Mr. Alexey Trach language handling capabilities. Currently customers in 108 countries are using our products. With the feedback of the Group of Companies Danone Unimilk this time, Forintek and Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems will work hard to develop even more attractive products and support system for the future. Mr.Juergen Gerigk In 2005, Forintek sold the first Hitachi Ink Jet Printer in the Russian Mar ket. Within the years, Danone became their biggest customer, counting with more than 40 high-speed machines. The reliability of the machines and the excellent service provided by Forintek suppor ted Danone to become one of the biggest manufacturers of dairy products in Russia today. Within the years Forintek created an atmosphere of trust. We are proud of having provided excellent technical solutions and are pleased to attend Danone’s growth in Russia. 07 Episode No. 2 From our Works In design, “customer’s viewpoint” is the most important. Air Compressor Design Dept. Department Manager Masaaki Toda 100th Anniversary of Hitachi Air Compressors ~ Jump up to the Next Stage ~ Its been 100 years since the first air compressor produced in Japan. Its a legacy left to us from our predecessors over the many years. Thanks to them, our air compressor business has grown to boast the domestic top share, but with our sights set on the world, we still see room for growth. Reaching this milestone year, we will accelerate our growth more globally. In addition to China and Southeast Asia, we will take aggressive approaches to countries where we have not expanded yet. Whether being in different countries and areas, what customers looking for in common in air compressors is high energy 10 saving performance. Of course, since energy saving is our greatest strength, we are confident in our ability to offer products that will satisfy the customer. On the other hand, talking about the current domestic market, mid-sized machines and general purpose air compressors manufactured in the Hitachi Industrial Equipment Systems Shimizu Works is being shipped out to the Tohoku area; northeastern Japan where the earthquake hit. Its our pleasure to contribute to reconstruction of Tohoku area. We hear there are many customers who switched to our products after using overseas compressors. It may be indirect contribution, but if we can serve to “reconstruction,”through our products even to a small extent we feel very much honored. For our 100th anniversary, from this year until the end of the year we are running the“Challenge 165” air compressor campaign, exerting further efforts into our promotion to domestic sales. Customer satisfaction through skillful design After working in the design field for 25 years, I have a special product in mind. That is the world's first air compressor with an on-board inverter. I now have great memories of the days spent on designing and developing this compressor. Compared to the current products, there was a clear difference in performance, but timed for the era of the switchover to energy-saving, it was very rewarding work. Thinking back, now I feel the customer point of view is the most important thing to design. It is to satisfy the customer in terms of cost, features, performance, durability, and so forth. In the case of air compressors, the customer is the actual end user that uses the product, as well as the dealer and retailer along with the department that carries out maintenance. Skillful design satisfies every customer. The business cycle in general for the air compressor is from production to sales and through maintenance to replacement. Customer point of view is necessary to carry on this“Cycleoriented business”in a sustainable way. I wish young designers understand this (smile). Deepening the Manufacturing Technology In recent years, we have seen numerous requests for solutions such as to recover the heat given off in the operation of air compressors, to pursue energy savings and so on. We do conduct R&D in response to the requests of customers, but there are constraints unique to air compressors. Because the percentage of customers who are replacing compressors is high, we can't change the size of the package (exterior shape of the product) or the placement of piping from that of the existing product. If we make it smaller because we can make it compact, we could conceivably cause inconvenience to the customers. Then, is there no innovation in air compressors? That's not the case. There's the “HISCREW NEXT series”, which is an oil injection screw air compressor developed jointly with our Narashino works that's been added to our existing product lineup. We have developed motors and inverters in house especially for air compressors and that improved energy savings, environmental performance, and maintainability. Our manufacturing career is deepening our technology and that leads to creating new products. Bringing together the strengths of our technology and Finished rotors are measured individually with threedimensional indicator. This leading edge equipment can measure down to the micron level. know-how we are able to reduce costs while improving functions. Assessing the future of the market, we would like to increase the current share of Hitachi air compressors in worldwide, beyond what it is today. Rotor fabrication equipment, of which there are only two in the world, are at Shimizu Works. The heart of the Hitachi air compressor is born here.
