The International Kids’ Carnival is an important Educational
project of La Biennale di Venezia, the goal of which is to inspire
the creativity and participation of children with performances,
exhibitions, workshops, the creation of masks and costumes, to
stimulate the direct involvement of the participants. All the activities
will be supervised by the Educational Team of La Biennale.
“Yet another step forward. The 4th International Kids’ Carnival
becomes more articulated, more complex and more fun all at the
same time. The Director of the Music Biennale Ivan Fedele will
personally take charge to lead the children to meet The Musical
Lion, to play with him, to experiment, to use colours, musical notes
and sounds to build the most stimulating of experiences.
We confirm our special attention to the younger generations
and the importance we place in familiarity with the arts on the
one hand, and creativity as dedicated play on the other.
Carnival is an initiative that will harness the combined energy
of many institutions and academies throughout the city:
so far 110 schools have joined and we wish to express
our gratitude to them all”.
Paolo Baratta
President of La Biennale di Venezia
20 Years of Masks and Costumes
Exhibition of the collection of sketches
from the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts – ASAC
From 1st February 2013, h. 9 am > 8 pm
Ca’ Giustinian, Calle del Ridotto (San Marco 1364/A)
The Venetian mask and costumes are the symbols of Carnival!
The Art Collection of the ASAC of La Biennale di Venezia preserves
hundreds of extraordinary works in the Set and Costume Sketches
section; works that have been collected from dozens of productions
and that we have chosen to highlight, selecting a large part of them
for this 4th International Kids’ Carnival. An enjoyable and amusing
way to share this common legacy of masterpieces with an audience
of all ages.
The exhibition design will display original sketches, full-scale
reproductions, tableaux with various interpretations of the same
subject, “macro” reproductions, some of them silhouettes, “flying”
objects. The authors include great artists such as Guttuso, Lanza,
Maccari, Lecoq Pontini, Capuzzo, Luzzati,Ponnelle, Matsoukis,
Wittstein, Casorati, Bray, Copertini and many others. There will also
be video screens that reproduce sequences of images associated
with works from which musical excerpts will be heard; among them
“Allez-hop!” (Berio-Ponnelle), “Treemonisha” (Scott Joplin-Copertini),
“Idomeneo” (Mozart-Casorati), “The Miraculous Mandarin” (BartòkPonnelle), “Lady Macbeth of Minsk” (Shostakovich-Guttuso), “Billy
Budd” (Britten-Guttuso).
The Grand Atelier of La Biennale
A surprise for kids... of all ages! It’s the Costume-Making workshop
that will be set up in one of the spaces at Ca’ Giustinian, where
it will be possible to make a Carnival costume, or have it made
for you, in just a few minutes using simple or “poor” materials, in
the style of some of the sketches on exhibit. With the help of our
staff members, everyone will have the chance to wear a new and
original costume!

Two days of diving into bubbles for young and old!
Who has never had fun blowing soap bubbles? It is definitely one
of the most popular pastimes ever, and so simple. But bubbles have
a long history, which began in the art of centuries gone by, and
continues in contemporary architecture, mathematics and physics.
Bubbles to have fun with, to understand, to play music, to surprise
yourself!
Workshops, musical happenings and concert.
Organized by Michele Emmer with the participation of Maestro
Claudio Ambrosini and Michele Cafaggi. With special thanks to the
Istituto Veneto di Lettere, Scienze ed Arti.
7,8 February
School Mornings – Central Pavilion
Reservation required
The workshops are held by the educational staff of La Biennale di
Venezia assisted, as a school project, by the students of the artistic
or technically-oriented upper-level secondary schools.
Musical/creative workshop
Dedicated to primary schools (grades 4 and 5)
and to lower-level secondary schools
“The Lion Composer and the 12 measures”: children and teenagers
will be involved in the creation of new sounds and noises with
instruments and everyday objects, with the purpose of composing a
12-measure musical score.
Every day
Hands-on artistic workshop
Dedicated to pre-school, primary and lower-level secondary schools
“The Musical Lion creates sounds and noises”: during the first part
the kids will undertake a sort of walking “sound and noise hunt”,
followed by a second part consisting in a workshop in which they
will invent and build instruments to play on, made out of various
types of material. The class as “a band” will perform a final sound
improvisation.
Every day
Traveling body-expression workshop
Dedicated to pre-school, primary and lower-level secondary schools
“The Musical Lion and expressive creativity”: the kids will come into
contact with the world of expressive creativity by means of visual,
audio and emotional stimuli. The interactive rooms in the Central
Pavilion will serve as a “traveling stage” for activities involving body
language.
Every day
Multimedia workshop
Dedicated to primary schools (grades 4 and 5)
and lower-level secondary schools
“The Musical Lion’s Sound Band”: a workshop to create animated
characters who will “play music”, starting with a series of images
and sounds to assemble.
The workshop will use tools such as computers, digital cameras and
webcams.
Every day
Hands-on costume-making workshop
Dedicated to primary and lower-level secondary schools
The Musical Lion “cuts and sews”: a workshop for the creation of
masks and costumes to be made with a variety of materials, inspired
by the sketches on display in the exhibition 20 Years of Masks and
Costumes from the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts.
Every day
Visit to La Biennale Library– ASAC
Dedicated to Art Schools, and upper-level secondary schools
A guided tour through the study, reading and research areas
featuring focuses on the collection by the specialized library staff of
the Historic Archives of the Contemporary Arts.
Every day
Musical workshop – Story-telling music:
from sound to the voice to the body
Dedicated to pre-school and primary schools
Active listening sessions to discover the art of communicating with
sounds. A workshop held in collaboration with the teachers and
students of the “Benedetto Marcello” Conservatory in Venice.
4,5,6 February
In the land of geometric soap bubbles
Dedicated to primary and lower-level secondary schools
Soap bubbles? Child’s play. And play we will, with large and small
soap bubbles. But… We will also see pictures of famous paintings
with bubbles, and will play more geometric games, with shapes you
would never expect. Thin sheets of soap that fill the spaces as if by
magic when you dip wire wands into soapy water. With maybe some
stories to tell about bubbles… And finally to create a square soap
bubble!
Workshop realized in collaboration with Prof. Michele Emmer.
7 February
Beautiful bubble ballet
Dedicated to primary schools
But do bubbles play? Or can bubbles be sounds that fly? Or dance?
The Musical Lion makes his way through La Biennale, surrounded
by music, roaring… And then he opens his mouth: will it be to make
soap bubbles or… will he eat them? He plays a funny instrument: a
long long tube that blows other sounds and other bubbles. Around
him, in the Sea of bubbles, stand the children (in costume, if they
please!) or they can go and explore the Island of enchanted sounds,
which can change the shape of the soap bubbles. And look how
happy these bubbles are! They are playing, changing, swinging
through the air. They are the curious dancing bubbles, who float
into the musical instruments to make them play their song. A musical
happening by Maestro Claudio Ambrosini.
8 February
The magic Piper
Dedicated to primary and lower-level secondary schools
The kids will be introduced through dance and music with nonverbal language to the ephemeral illusions of the “piper” and the
physical sound of the violin that will break the enchantment and
make them the protagonists of their own decisions and their own
future. The kids will be involved in the reading of several articles
from the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Adolescent.
Theatre workshop held in collaboration with Unicef and with the
students of the historic Liceo Artistico in Venice.
7,8 February

Music, dance and art workshop
Dedicated to primary schools and lower-level secondary schools
The kids, guided and accompanied by two teachers, will learn to
build a drum out of recycled materials, they will design the typical
costumes of the “murgueros”, they will learn to decorate and paint
instruments and costumes, they will take their first dance steps
and play the first notes of the compelling “murguero” rhythm, and
finally, at the end of the workshop, they will stage an exhibition of
“murguera”.
From 4 to 8 February
Great Britain
(Drama and Storytelling): All the world’s a stage
Dedicated to primary schools
Stories, theatre, music, puppets… an active involvement of all the
senses. Learning English has never been this much fun!
A workshop created by a native-language English teacher from the
British Council with the help of a member of the staff of La Biennale
di Venezia.
4 February
There will be workshops for nursery schools,
with activities to be defined at the moment of reservation.
The National Participations – Central Pavilion
Argentina: The murga from the Rio de la Plata
The Embassy of Argentina in Italy proposes a workshop
to participate in building a murga, a typical Carnival
tradition from the area of Rio de la Plata (Buenos Aires
and Montevideo). This is a unified performance that
brings together dance, music, picaresque words and
costumes. The history of the murga is as ancient as
the Carnival tradition of Rio de la Plata, and is rooted
in the first manifestations in which African slaves also participated.
In 1850 the first official carnival in which the aristocracy took part
was organized, whereas in the early twentieth-century the carnival
was revived primarily by Spanish and Italian immigrants, who went
out onto the streets with their milk carts decorated as stagecoaches.
In recent years the murga has become independent of carnival and
has begun to appear year-round. The workshop will begin by telling
about and teaching the various ways in which carnival is celebrated in
Argentina (using videos for support), and will end with the realization –
coordinated by the two teachers, one for music and one for dance – of
a real murga.
From 4 to 8 February
Bahamas: Children Song Project
A group of children from Nassau will participate in
a variety of workshops to make a video of their
experience in Venice. A cultural exchange that will
be documented by images and video clips and
will be available for viewing online on the website
www.labiennale.org.
7 and 8 February
Germany: Being Cleopatra – The eternal diva
Workshop of costumes, dance and Street Art
Queen, pop icon, ideal of beauty: Cleopatra has inspired
the imagination of every generation for the past two
thousand years. In Carnival this year, we will plunge
into a mysterious world of pyramids, opulence
and hieroglyphics. Who would not want to create
splendid golden ornaments, crowns and accessories to
play the role of a Pharaoh, or an Egyptian god? Thus
transformed, the fun begins with dancing. Or let yourself be captured
by the artist Street Art BTOY, who will be present on February 2nd and
3rd: with her you will learn to make portraits with bright colours and an
exciting printing technique. A project by the Art Gallery of the German
Federal Republic (Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik
Deutschland) which for La Biennale di Venezia will offer a preview of
its next great exhibition on the legend of Cleopatra, scheduled in Bonn
in 2013. By appointment of the Embassy of Germany in Rome and in
collaboration with the German Centre for Venetian Studies.
from 2 to 7 February
Great Britain: (Drama and Storytelling): All the world’s a stage
The workshop All the world’s a stage – held by
an native-language English teacher and expert
in “Drama” and “Young Learners” – will involve
the children and their parents in activities related
to theatre and drama, music and story-telling, to
demonstrate how teaching methods based on a
humanistic and emotional approach can make learning
a foreign language fun and lasting. Initiative made possible by the
support of the British Council Italia.
from 2 to 4 February
Maldives: The Dough Portrait
A photo portrait …with your head “in the dough”!
The Dough Portrait is a project based on the
collaboration between artist Soren Dahlgaard
and each individual participant. The artist will
in fact introduce an alternative way of making
photographic portraits, by asking the subject to
“wear” a mound of dough that will cover his face and
convey expression through the language of the body and
the clothes he wears. The project, which has already been presented
in 10 countries and involved over 1000 people, will come to
Venice during the Biennale Carnival. An unusual and entertaining
experience!
9 and 10 February
Romania: Gopo’s little man
Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the birth of maestro
Ion Popescu Gopo (1923-1989), the pioneer of
animation in Romania, the country will present a
series of screenings of animated films in which the
main character of the video (the man from Gopo) will
show the audience, in an ironic and intelligent way,
how man evolved, where evolution is heading, etc…
The screening is organized by the Romanian Institute of Culture and
Humanistic Research in Venice, with the support of the Romanian
Cultural Institute of Bucarest, in collaboration with the Dacin Sara Film
Production Company and the National Cinematography Centre.
Every day
United States of America: Solid Music
Art and Music are two codes consisting respectively
of a specific non-verbal universal language. Based
on this assumption and on a consideration of each
child’s relationship with music, the participants in
the workshop will be asked to complete a creative
project that will be part of a larger collective
installation. At the same time, the children will be able
to take part in an actual musical performance to which each one
will contribute with the production of his or her own highly personal
note. The programme for the United States was made possible by
the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
2,3,9,10 and 12 February

Music and bubbles
Ouverture des Saponettes
A concert for soap bubbles by and with Michele Cafaggi.
An eccentric conductor will lead you into the round fragile world of soap
bubbles for a “concert” where the unexpected is always just around the
corner: strange instruments blow giant bubbles, bouncing bubbles, walking
bubbles, bunches of bubbles, and the puffiest of them all will fit into a
gigantic bubble!

Music and bubbles
Soap bubbles from the art of the seventeenth century to the Olympic Swimming Pool in Beijing
Among the first to be attracted to the iridescent soap film were painters. For
mathematicians soap bubbles were models for the geometry of highly stable
forms, for artists soap bubbles were interesting not only for their playful
appearance but also because they were a symbol of fragility, of the frailty of
all human things.Experiments with the shapes and colours of soap film, with
the shapes of bubbles, with problems that can be solved using bubbles and
soap film. Workshop held in collaboration with Michele Emmer
