Culture Cards: Dr. Dre
Dr. Dre MUSICIAN G-FUNK ERA DR. DRE was one of the first rappers to predict that he would become a billionaire. And, braggadocio aside, he was the first rapper to be right! After selling his Beats By Dre brand to Apple in 2014, he became the first figure in the hip-hop world who could legitimately append nine figures to his net worth, and he did it all, unlike his former bandmates in N.W.A., without dying, disappearing, or starring in a series of well-received family films. On the other hand, he also launched the career of Eminem, who was the first major figure to make white people think they invented rap, so his career was a bit of a mixed blessing at best. ANDRE YOUNG DID YOU KNOW? BORN: February 18, 1965 Dr. Dre, in addition to rapping, producing, and placing his name on home electronics made in Asia, is an actual musician who can play instruments! Proof of this can be found on many of the records he made and produced, going all the way back to the days when he dressed in a set of pleather scrubs and a prop stethoscope as “Dr. J”, keyboardist for the World Class Wreckin’ Cru. Also, he was one marriage away from being named Andre Crayon. BIRTHPLACE: Compton, CA BATS/THROWS: Left/Right HOME FIELD: That Old L.A.
