Welcome to
the "henderson
fabtech desert classic"
Casey working the finish line at the Bilek Racing Silver State "300" – photo by Don Fall
Dear Race Enthusiasts ~
I'd like to welcome all of you to the last
race of the 2008 "Silver State Series"~ the
HENDERSON FABTECH DESERT CLASSIC
~ "A SPECTACULAR OFF-ROAD
ADVENTURE IN THE DESERT." There is no
doubt in my mind that the Henderson
Fabtech Desert Classic will become a truly
epic off-road racing event. From the fun,
challenging racecourse, to the exciting
setting of the beautiful downtown center of
Henderson, Nevada, a new adventure is in
store for everyone!
I would also like to take this opportunity
to acknowledge Bud Pico and Charlene
Ham, from the City of Henderson. You will
notice a variation in our typical race
weekend schedule; this schedule was set
by our partners, the City of Henderson,
Henderson Convention Center, as well as
Fabtech, Official Suspension of Best In The
Desert; these are the people that make it all
happen. Their goal is to create a party
atmosphere in downtown Henderson; the
streets will be closed off to traffic and will
be filled with race vehicles, contingency
sponsors and street vendors. There will be
action all day long and throughout the night
in downtown Henderson, fun for the entire
family!
The Henderson Fabtech Desert Classic is
the last off-road adventure in the line-up of
what the Best In The Desert Racing
Association considers a very successful
and exciting 2008 racing year. The
Henderson Fabtech Desert Classic will be
the deciding factor for many Class
Champions, as well as a great racecourse
for first time racers. There will be one
racecourse for Motorcycles, Quads, UTVs,
4
and Cars and Trucks. It is a loop race for all
classes, which makes it very easy to pit.
This is beneficial for first time racers and a
good opportunity to come out and get your
feet wet, figuratively speaking, of course!
The Henderson Fabtech Desert Classic
Start/Finish and Main Pit will be 15 miles
from Henderson. There is not one specific
"Host Hotel" for the event because the entire
City of Henderson is sponsoring the event;
downtown Henderson is where all of the
festivities will be taking place. It's a great
time to come to Henderson; off-road race
by day and play in the beautiful City of
Henderson by night!
The race course has been changed this
year due to environmental concerns by the
BLM and Boulder City. We do our best at
Best In The Desert to comply with the rules
and regulations and we appreciate our
racers doing the same; we all must protect
our environment and respect the rules.
This is why Best In The Desert has been
granted permission to have this special
event in the Eldorado Valley. Again, the
Time Trials event on Thursday will kick off
the long weekend, which rolls right into a
Welcome Racers party on Thursday night.
Registration, Technical Inspection and
Contingency will be held Friday on Water
Street, followed by the exciting and
informative Drivers/Riders meeting. Also,
this is where we present the prestigious
TEAM FORD POLE AWARD! The Team
Ford Pole Award will be presented to the
fastest qualifier in Class 1400 and Class
1500 by the president of TEAM FORD,
Steve Olliges. The fastest qualifier will walk
away with $1000 CASH Friday night, now
that is AWESOME! Of course, the MAIN
EVENT will take place on Saturday, with
motorcycles, quads and UTV's kicking off a
full day of racing, followed by the awesome
cars and trucks.
I'd like to thank all of our great
sponsors, and a special thank you to our
major sponsors, Ford Motor Company,
Official Truck of Best In The Desert, Maxxis
Tire, Official Tire of Best In The Desert, VP
Racing Fuels, Official Fuel of Best In The
Desert, Fabtech, Official Suspension

In The Desert, KTM, Official Motorcycle of

and Sportsman Cycle Sales, and of course
the wonderful City of Henderson. I
appreciate everything you do for off-road
racing and Best In The Desert, your
support is what makes us the "Best In The
Desert!"
In closing, I'd like to thank you, the
truly dedicated race enthusiast, for racing
with Best In The Desert and I appreciate all
that you bring to this racing organization,
you are what makes us the "Best In The
Desert!"
Thank You, Be Safe and Have Fun!

About Best in the desert...
"The Great American Desert Racing Series"
asey Folks, Director of Best in the
Desert Racing Association, brings
over 35 years experience with him.
He has worn many hats in his affiliation
with the sport of off-road racing,
including: competitor, promoter and
businessman. As an avid off-road
enthusiast and competitor, he has seen
many changes affecting the sport.
Casey Folks has competed in almost
every type of off-road event throughout
the western United States. His accolades
include over 30 races in Baja California,
Mexico, and the Tunisia Rally in Northern
Africa. Casey served as the American
Consultant for Incas Rally in Peru and
was the event coordinator for the Nevada
Rally, representing the company “Acerbis
Adventure” based in Italy.
Guided by Casey’s direction, the Best
In The Desert Racing Association has
achieved exceptional growth in
attendance and popularity. Through the
utilization of promotional and advertising
C
techniques previously reserved for high
density spectator events, and combining
them with genuine concern for both
racers needs and environmentalists’
input, Best In The Desert now enjoys
recognition and exposure never before
seen in off-road racing.
With such famous races on the
schedule as the historical “Parker 425”
and “Vegas to Reno”, the longest offroad race in the United States, Best In
The Desert events gain extensive media
attention that includes national television
broadcasts as well as national and local
print coverage. This creates the
opportunity for both competitors and
sponsors to gain exceptional exposure.
Casey Folks never expects anything
less of himself than he does the racers,
and he relies heavily on a dedicated staff
that consists mostly of loyal volunteer
off-road racing enthusiasts. The
philosophy of the organization is to
provide top quality, world class long
distance off-road desert racing events,
and more importantly, to make those
events exciting, spectacular, fun,
different, well paying, and most of all,
affordable.
Along with the professional and
sportsman off-road races, Best In The
Desert also takes part in local club races,
and has a number of family and celebrity
trail rides throughout the year. These
celebrity events involve local
businessmen along with members of the
political community, and are designed to
create public awareness and
acceptability.
Casey truly believes “Life is an
Adventure!” and invites you to “Come
Live Your Adventure with Best in the
Desert.” If you would like to become part

At the Bilek Racing Silver State “300”, racers challenged
some of the most scenic desert land in the country. The
course had a mixture of high-desert mountains, sandwashes, and some of the most awesome scenic views
ever witnessed in off-road racing. The course went
through unbelievable rock formations in the Pahroc
Summit area, the Dalamar Valley, where the ghost town
of Dalamar was located and gold was discovered in 1890.
Plus, the Cathedral Gorge area with its eroded spires,
towers and columns of tan bentonite clay and Pioche,
which in 1870 was considered to be one of the wildest
mining camps in the West. Not only was this a great
race, but also a great event for the whole family.

If you don’t think it’s better to start on the pole, ask Sam Berri. Having
taken the first spot in the Time Trials Thursday prior to Saturday’s race,
top qualifier Sam Berri piloted his Class 1500 unlimited buggy to the
overall win at the inaugural Best In The Desert’s Bilek Racing Silver
State “300” in the desert north of Mesquite, Nevada. Berri had a small
lead most of the day, but drove hard through the scenic, and tough
course to capture the overall and Class 1500 win. This was Sam
Berri’s first overall win; he finished a little less than 3 minutes ahead of
second place Chuck Dempsey.
Alexa Bilek took the honors in Class 1100.

More than 180 racers left the starting line for this exciting first time
event.
Other notable finishers included:
Alexa Bilek, (daughter of race sponsor Mike Bilek) won Class 1100.
Steve Olliges, first in Class 1400, Trick Truck.
Curt LeDuc took home first in Class 8000.
Jason Horsely, was the Pro Truck winner.
First overall motorcycle across the line was the Honda of Dylan Lane
and Jeff Trulove.

first-aid & communications
Medical - First-Aid
The Best In The Desert is committed to safety and welfare.
We have assembled teams of First-Aid personnel to respond if needed. These volunteers are wonderful, skilled, dedicated
medical professionals. Most work daily as EMS providers in the areas that these races are held. They are not miracle workers, but
they will be there when needed. Our teams will work with local EMS agencies and work towards definitive care. If you need them,
look for the First-Aid flags at the gas stops. Participants USE your yellow cards! If you do not need them, wave as you cover them
with dust. Race smart and enjoy the scenery in wonderful Nevada.
Good Luck!
Communications
12
The Best in the Desert Communications. The hardest most forgotten part of any off-road event until someone has an emergency
or wants something from somewhere else on the race course. Many people don't realize the difficulty of having good
communications. It's not easy!! With race courses that are sometimes spread out over 500 miles, the logistics of getting race
information where it's needed, and when it's needed...as well as the information being correct can only be done by people that
care. In most Best of the Desert events all communications are handled by amateur radio operators. Casey Folks recognized
early in his promoting career the need for solid, good communications and amateur radio has been a part of Best in the Desert
ever since we began. Many of the amateur radio volunteers supporting the Best in the Desert are not racers, but have a "can do
attitude" and enjoy the challenge of the Nevada desert and demonstrating the capabilities of amateur radio. Without the ham
radio operators and other volunteers supporting the sport and Best in the Desert, there would be no Best in the Desert. My
deepest thanks and appreciation to all of them... they make an almost impossible task appear fun and easy.
Thanks to all and have fun!

“Team Ford” Time Trials
Pole Award
hen Casey Folks announced the exciting
new “Team Ford” Time Trials Pole Award
for the 2007 TSCO “Vegas to Reno” race,
it meant for the FIRST TIME EVER, a $1,000
CASH award would be paid to the fastest
qualifier at the Time Trials to determine the
overall starting positions for Class 1400 Trick
Truck and Class 1500 Unlimited desert race
vehicles.
At the time Steve Olliges, president of Team
Ford Las Vegas, stated, “Best In The Desert IS
THE ONLY DESERT RACING ORGANIZATION that
runs Time Trials for the top starting positions,
and I’m proud to step it up with the “Team Ford”
Pole Award. I will personally hand a thousand
dollars in cash to the fastest qualifier. To qualify
for the first starting position, and get $1000 on
top of it, now that’s the way to begin a race.”
Casey Folks stated, “Ford Motor Company is
a huge sponsor of Best in the Desert, and we
appreciate their continuing support. And now
W
Steve Olliges’ announcement of the prestigious
“Team Ford” Pole Award only adds to the
credibility and stature Best in the Desert races
have attained.”
This cash prize, along with a one-of-a-kind
trophy, is awarded to the fastest qualifier of the
time trials held before each Best In The Desert
race for the car and truck classes. The location
and terrain of the special five-mile course is a
closely guarded secret until the day of the event.
Racers are entitled to one practice lap, and then
qualifying begins. Only Class 1400 Trick Truck
and Class 1500 Unlimited desert race vehicles
entered in the race are eligible to qualify for the
overall top starting positions. This unique format
truly allows the fastest vehicles, regardless of
class designation, to compete on equal ground
for a shot at the overall race victory. Since their
inception at last year’s “Vegas to Reno” race, the
Time Trials have become a big hit with the
sport’s top desert racers.

best in the desert on television
est in the Desert TV will be
B available everywhere to everyone
in the world this season!
32 million homes will be able to
see Best In The Desert racing this
year on the America One Sports
network and MavTV. In addition,
Extreme 4x4 on Spike TV, reaching
more than 85 million homes in the
USA and Canada covered the
Terrible’s “250” at Primm.
Worldwide coverage is available
via the GlobeCast network to England,
Ireland, the Middle East, Mexico,
Canada, Scotland, Japan, and more.
There will also be a direct satellite
feed on broadband. No, this is not an
Internet download. You can actually
log on to MavTV.com at the precise
moment that the TV show is airing
and watch an unedited version of the
program, live off the satellite feed, in
real time on your computer. So no
excuses… anyone, anywhere can
watch Best in the Desert racing this
year.
Already starting in October, at least
13 original one-hour programs will air
in 2008. Check local television listings
for exact air times on each network.
Addition information is available on
the Best In The Desert website at
bitd.com.
Please contact Sopwith
Motorsports at 317-590-3495 for
updates on team coverage and onboard camera slots available for races
in 2009.

Race Team profile
Gary Dixon is the owner of
Lost Boys Racing, along
with his sons Derek and
Stewart Dixon. Full Circle
Construction & Maintenance
is our sole sponsor, although
we are and have been seeking
additional sponsors. Our
racing team consists of father
and sons as the drivers, along with family
and friends as our pit crew and support. We
try to make all our races a family event,
where the kids can enjoy camping, BBQ,
campfires and racing.
We have always enjoyed the outdoors in
one way or another. Skiing at the river,
motorcycling or trucking through the
desert and even having fun with building
demolition derby cars, are
just some of the things we
have enjoyed doing. Best In
The Desert has provided us
with an opportunity to enjoy
the outdoors while encouraging
our competitive spirit too. Our
first race was in Henderson in
2004 and we have competed in
every BITD race since. We have
enjoyed many podium finishes
but yet to receive a class win.
However, in our best year, we
claimed the #2 spot for our class.
Some of our best times together have been
the prep time before the races. We have
learned many things and have created some
innovative ways in solving problems with our
trucks.
We have also ventured racing Baja. Each race
has truly been an adventure that allows us to
get away, let go to enjoy a little life on the
edge. Good for the Soul.
We support Best In The Desert, Score
International and CORR, in that order. We
value all the friends we have made over the
past 5 years. In a competitive class such as
ours, a strong sense of camaraderie still finds
its way into every race. We have thanked
Casey many times, but not publicly. He is
truly the best racing promoter and organizer
and it has really made all the difference. We
appreciate all your efforts and energy to make
Best In The Desert what it is.
