By Melissa Bailey O n Tuesday 26th January, Australians will have the luxury of a public holiday to celebrate Australia Day. The national holiday wasn’t declared as a public holiday until 1994, but it didn’t take us long to find creative and fun ways to celebrate the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British ships at Port Jackson. What better way to celebrate Australia Day than joining locals in Redcliffe for lots of family activities! Starting with Moreton Bay Regional Council’s Fish, Fun and Aussie Sun event, a cadet march and flag raising ceremony will start the day between 7.30am and 8.30am at the Redcliffe RSL. From 10am to 7pm, the Council will provide all sorts of entertainment at Suttons Beach, including live music at the Suttons Beach Rotunda, kids craft, face painting, $2 rides, free temporary tattoos, and games for the whole family! Beat your family and friends in the sack 4 February 2016 races, egg and spoon races, thong throwing and a pie eating competition. Come along in the evening to enjoy fireworks at 7pm and enjoy a fantastic range of food and drink available at Pilpel by the Sea. Pilpel by the Sea will also be hosting live music, rides, 70s and 80s all-Australian music, and a beach volleyball competition from 9am until late. The restaurant will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The celebrations don’t end there though! Mon Komo Hotel will join in the celebrations and provide a six day long weekend music festival! “We’re creating a fun atmosphere to celebrate Australia Day with lots of different styles of music highlighting local Brisbane musical talent,” says Matt Newberry of Mon Komo Hotel. “We want everyone to enjoy a long long-weekend this Australia Day!” Six days of musical entertainment begins on Thursday, 21st January at 6pm. Each night will host varying musicians for relaxing days and DJs playing the best beats for dance parties into the early hours of the morning. The Seabrae Bar of the Mon Komo Hotel will host an Aussie beach party on Monday 25th January from 9pm to 3am, so dress in your favourite Aussie beach boardies and bikinis for a great night. The Redcliffe Leagues Club is hosting an Aussie Aussie Aussie Party on 23rd January from 6pm to 10pm with free entry and a chance to win in a share of $4000 cash. This adult only event provides drinks and canapes on arrival at the Community Gaming Room. On Australia Day you’ll find a free adult only Australia Day Backyard Party at the Leagues Club’s International Sports Bar from 1pm, with the Triple J Hottest 100 playing from 11am to 8pm. Look out for giant Jenga, a BBQ lunch, live music, best-dressed competitions and toad races! Traditional, or a little bit naughty, they’re promising evenings of romance and glamour you’ll never forget. Sugar and Spice at the Sugar Deli wit and charm throughout the evening as the ladies perform. The Sugar Deli has a growing reputation as a venue with a quaint and unique style, and a range of delectable food options. Normally, it’s closed on a Sunday evening, but for Valentine’s Day, they’re making an exception. Please note: this is an adult event, containing adult themes and implied nudity. Nothing says Valentine’s Day quite like the sight of flowers, coloured decorations, and the flickering glow of candlelight. There’s a beauty to the more traditional romantic atmospheres - and a good reason why they’re the “go to” romantic formula in a range of movies and television shows. If you’re looking for a more traditional Valentine’s décor in which to celebrate your romance, then the Sugar Deli in Scarborough is the place to go. There are two levels of tickets to Bombshell Burlesque, but if you’re looking for the best seats in the house, you’ll need to get in quickly. The very limited Gold VIP ticket costs $85, will secure you the best seats, access to drinks specials throughout the night, a two-course dinner, and the show. Or there are Dinner & Show tickets available for $65. For more information, or to book, call 3284 6520 or visit www.monkomohotel. com.au The chef has crafted a special, romantic dessert for couples to savour, and though they have a range of popular and mouth-watering menu items, the Sugar Deli is happy to cater to dietary requirements as needed. The Sugar Deli will be open all day, so if you’ve already planned your romantic evening, why not make a day of it? Places at the Sugar Deli’s romantic dinner are limited, so call 3880 3192 to make your reservations. Bombshell Burlesque at Mon Komo Mon Komo’s Valentine’s extravaganza promises a night of glitz, glamour, and tantalising acts. If you’re looking to try your own outdoors adventure, or to upgrade your gear and get back out on the road, the Moreton Bay Caravan, Camping, Boating and 4x4 Expo will have you more eager than ever to set off. The Redcliffe Showground’s will be ‘adventurer central’ from 19th - 21st February, with a range of classes, presentations and exhibitions providing information on everything you need to know to start exploring the Sunshine State. National fishing presenter, Dave Moss will be on site to talk you through the trials and triumphs of fishing, as well as giving casting demonstrations using a twelve-metre long fishing tank of live barramundi. ‘Creek to Coast’ favourite Scott Hillier will be on hand to help you make the most of our local waterways and show how to catch, prepare, and cook your catch. He will also be running kids fishing clinics. For those with a love of bushwalking, Luke Cheyne’s Reptile Show is a must see. Not only 8 February 2016 will you get a chance to get up close and personal with a range of reptiles and amphibians, Luke will be teaching some vital lessons in outdoor safety. If you don’t know what to do when confronted by an aggressive snake, or what to do if you’re bitten, Luke’s show is a ‘not to be missed’ event. It’s a lot of fun, but given the abundance of snakes in Australia, it could also save your life. There will be a wealth of exhibitors on hand to give you the low-down on a range of products, and help you figure out what will work best for you and your family. Whether you’re looking for reels, caravans or even an American or Canadian motorhome tour, there’s literally something for everyone at the Expo. There’s over $15,000 worth of prizes to be won at the Expo, including a boating package valued at $10,990 courtesy of Cunningham Marine Centre. Entry coupons are available in the Event Guide at the event. Tickets to the Expo are $10 for adults and $8 for those with a Seniors Card. Children are free, but will not be admitted to the Expo without an adult. Though there will be limited on-street parking, there will be $5 parking next door on Redcliffe State High School’s fields, with proceeds raised going to support the school’s sporting teams. Public transport will also be available. The Fairway Challenge is actually the first section of the famous Brisbane to Gladstone race. This event is a very important regatta on the racing calendar as it is used by the serious racers as a ‘shakedown’ race or for those needing to qualify for the Brisbane to Gladstone Race. The Fairway attracts many entrants looking to qualify for the Brisbane to Gladstone. This is an 80 nautical mile passage event starting at the front of the Redcliffe Jetty and travelling out to Caloundra, finishing in the vicinity of the Moreton Bay Boat Club (MBBC). The Pearl Challenge, that is run on the same weekend, is aimed at sports and trailable yachts able to safely complete an “out and back” course within Moreton Bay’s sheltered waters. This challenge is open to sports boats, trailer sailors, classic yachts and keel boats preferring a challenging but shorter course than the Fairway. This event is a moderate length passage race, approximately 40 nautical miles starting from Redcliffe Jetty and travelling out to Tangalooma and return via the Pearl Channel to finish in the vicinity of MBBC. It will also include a separate miscellaneous division for keel boats (mixed fleet) and multihull participants by way of additional divisions and prizes. With over 30 boats participating last year, the MBBC is looking forward to a great weekend of sailing with the added bonus of introducing the Telstra Store Kippa Ring as their major sponsor. The Redcliffe Jetty will be a perfect place for viewing the start of this great race, get in a good position before the race begins at 10am. 10 February 2016 Times and Heights of High and Low Waters T try their hands at creating fun, engaging and educational music for a far younger crowd. Since then, the group has conquered the world with their mix of catchy music and boundless optimism, seeing the Wiggles become one of the all-time highest selling children’s performers in history. Though the fashion and faces have changed through the years, one thing has remained the same: kids love them. So do parents (at least until the 800th time they hear the same DVD). So how do the world’s most successful children’s entertainers celebrate 25 years of fun? With a new tour, of course! After an often sold out series of concerts around Australia, the Wiggles are coming to Queensland with their latest show, ‘Wiggle Town’. Even better, they’re coming to Redcliffe! The Redcliffe Cultural Centre will be the place to be on March 29 to see Australia’s favourite children’s entertainers. Emma, Anthony, Lachy, and Simon will be bringing the Wiggle party to Redcliffe, singing fan favourites like ‘Hot Potato’, ‘Rock-a-bye Your Bear’, and ‘Dorothy the Dinosaur’, as well as a host of other wellloved classics. They’ll also be showing off new songs from the ‘Wiggle Town’ album, DVD, and upcoming TV series. Fans of Dorothy the Dinosaur, Wags the Dog, Captain Feathersword, and Henry the Octopus won’t be disappointed, either: all of your favourites will be there to sing and dance the day away! If you’ve got a Wiggles fan in your family, then March 29 should probably be blocked out on 12 February 2016 your calendar now. The event promises to be incredibly popular, and two shows are scheduled at the Redcliffe Cultural Centre. The first kicks off at 10am, with the final show at 12:30pm. Member for Redcliffe, Yvette D’Ath congratulated the Redcliffe PCYC on being granted $100,000 to construct a covered court to support multi-sport at Redcliffe. “This first stage of the PCYC redevelopment will enable the club to expand its peak time activities and allow a wider range of activities to operate both day and night regardless of weather conditions” Ms D’Ath said. “Senior members will have a more comfortable shaded and weather protected area to perform their activities and the Youth At Risk Programs will benefit from the additional space. The PCYC’s Bicycle Education & Safety Training (BEST) program will also have an undercover protected area to complete their Bike Safety Training skills.” The PCYC grant is provided under the Queensland Government’s Get Playing Places and Spaces program which assists local sport and recreation organisations and regional local government with the development of places and spaces for the community to become involved in sport and active recreation. Five Redcliffe 26 February 2016 Clubs have also been awarded funding under the Get Going Clubs program that helps clubs provide access to participation opportunities in the community. The clubs included: • Redcliffe Leagues Netball Association - $7,500 to provide training in governance, management, planning and marketing to support netball at Redcliffe. • Lakers Softball Club, $7,165 - to purchase equipment, including a pitching machine, transport cart and computer equipment to support softball at Kippa-Ring. • Redcliffe Peninsula Surf Life Saving Club, $4,800 to purchase an outboard motor for an inflatable rescue boat to support surf lifesaving training and competition at Redcliffe. • Redcliffe and District Touch Association - $7,500 to conduct an entry level women’s social competition including skills sessions to support touch football at Redcliffe. • Peninsula Padres Baseball Club - $7,500 to purchase equipment including two portable pitching machines to support baseball in Kippa-Ring. Across the State there were 540 successful applications under Round 4 of the Get Going Clubs program totalling $3,475,363 in funding. Round 5 of Get Going Clubs is expected to open in mid-2016. 4-6 Anderson Street Real Estate Pictured: Megan Hooper with daughter Indie Off to a Great Start: Redcliffe Students Start Prep By Melissa Bailey E very year, thousands of excited and nervous children and parents look forward to the start of the school year. Whether they’re ready to start working in the classroom or itching to see old friends and meet new ones, hundreds of children will either start or return to school in Redcliffe in 2016. Redcliffe mum, Megan Hooper looks forward to supporting her daughter, Indie in her first year of school. “Initially I was excited for Indie to start school but as the big day looms closer, I feel more emotional. I’ll probably have a few tears after I drop her off!” says Hooper. Word around town is some schools have encouraged parents of Prep children to meet regularly before school begins, allowing the little ones to make friends before the year even starts. “Play dates have been organised every Wednesday for the past six months, which was a great way for Indie to meet her peers before school starts. We were even invited to meet 28 February 2016 her teacher and classmates before Christmas,” Hooper stated. Even other students who have older siblings attending school have been invited to meet new friends at orientation days. Local mum Amy Norman says her daughter Lilianna is really excited about starting Prep this year. “She was a little worried about her kindy friends going to other schools, but she’s had the opportunity to meet new friends at the orientation days the school organised.” Starting a new family tradition, Margate mum Romina Spalding says, “I’m looking forward to seeing my son follow in my footsteps by attending the school I went to.” When asked what he’s looking forward to about starting school, Spalding’s son Riccardo says, “Learning to write.” Ahead of the game, many Preppies can already write their names, and so can Riccardo, who says he had lots of letters to learn to write his! We hope all students starting or returning to school in 2016 have a great year, especially those beginning their first year of school! Real Estate A word from our representatives Cr James Houghton Residents that live in the Moreton Bay region may be eligible for Council funding if they have been selected in their chosen sport to represent Queensland or Australia. Council’s Individual Achievement Fund celebrates individuals who have achieved outstanding results in their chosen field. To see if you qualify for this funding view the guidelines on Council’s website www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au (click on the ‘Living’ tab and then select ‘Grants & Funding’). Applications are invited all year round and can be submitted at any time. If you are a member of a community group, your group may be able to apply for Council funding as part of Council’s Community Grants Program. Round 2 will open on 1 February 2016 and close on 31 March 2016. A big congratulations to a group of senior students from ROAR Academy that were selected to travel to Atlanta in the USA to compete at the Junior Theatre Festival in January. They will be the only group attending from Australia and were personally invited to attend by Music Theatre International. Yvette D’Ath MP I hope that Redcliffe residents enjoyed the Christmas break and look forward to the opportunities of 2016. It is an exciting time for students attending their first prep classes or moving up to Secondary education. I wish students all the best for the school year ahead. For some families, getting children involved in local sporting clubs can be too expensive. The “Get Started Voucher” allows parents to redeem up to $150 in costs associated with registered clubs. Round 7 vouchers are available from 27 January while round 8 opens in July. Phone 13 74 68 to check eligibility. The latest round of “Get Playing Places and Spaces” grants supports six Redcliffe sports clubs, including $100,000 for the Redcliffe PCYC to construct a covered court. Round five of the funding opens mid-year. This year promises to be an exciting one for Redcliffe, following over 100 years of hope and anticipation for the Moreton Bay Rail Link we can now see the project nearing completion. Luke Howarth MP another local suburb. Happy New Year to you all, I hope that 2016 brings health, success and happiness for you. I had the chance to have a break over the Christmas New Year period with my family but still seemed to have plenty to do as we moved house from Woody Point to Federal Parliament begins its 2016 sittings on the 2nd February and over the past couple of weeks I have been out and about in the community listening to people, hearing their goals and ideas for 2016. As our school students return to school I want to thank the local school staff for the great job they do helping parents educate our kids. Local businesses are also reporting a positive start to the new calendar year which is good for local jobs. Where you can, please keep supporting local business when buying goods and services. The electrification of the Moreton Bay Rail Link means that the first train service is a step closer and I know that locals are looking forward to the opening of this major infrastructure project. It has been a pleasure to represent the people of Petrie in Federal Parliament over the last 2 years and I will continue to provide a strong voice for you throughout 2016. redcliffe guide 29 Community Mango Hill Station Moreton Bay Rail Link Nears Completion A fter more than a century of anticipation, 2016 will be remembered as the year rail finally made it to the Redcliffe Peninsula. With rail laid, stations constructed and testing soon to be underway, the project is now entering the final phase of delivery. Over the coming months, residents will notice changes along the rail line as the project nears completion and enters the testing and commissioning phase. Testing of the communication and security systems are being conducted at each station, ensuring that announcements, messaging screens and cameras are operating correctly. High voltage overhead wires are electrified across the length of the rail line. The overhead wires carry 25,000 volts of electricity, 100 times more than what is required to run a standard household. The voltage is so powerful that coming close to the wires can cause electric shock or electrocution. Now the lines are electrified, trains will be seen operating along the rail line while testing is carried out on the signalling equipment and new infrastructure. During this period, up to 4 trains will be tested on the rail line both during the day and 30 February 2016 intermittently at night and on weekends. The rail line and stations will continue to remain closed to the public until the project opens in mid-2016. For the safety of residents, very strict rules will now apply along the ‘live’ rail corridor. Remember, electric trains weigh more than 250 tonnes and can take several hundred meters to stop. Please be mindful of your safety around the rail line. During November 2015, TransLink undertook 9 community consultation sessions on the draft bus and rail timetable for the opening of the Moreton Bay Rail Link across the project corridor. The opportunity to provide feedback on the proposed Moreton Bay region network has now closed. Yvette D’Ath, Member for Redcliffe, thanked residents who provided feedback and had their say. “Several issues have been raised with me, including with Central Avenue, and I have called on both the Department of Transport and Minister Stirling Hinchcliffe to take these concerns into consideration in finalising the new services.” The outcomes of the consultation will be released early this year. The Moreton Bay Regional Council is planning ahead for on-street parking for streets surrounding the new train stations including Kippa-Ring Rail Station. From June to October last year, Council and the Moreton Bay Rail project team sought feedback from residents about parking management options. Over 600 responses were received with a 74% majority preferring the introduction of ‘No Parking’ between 6.00am and 6.00pm, Monday to Friday, with exception for resident or visitor parking permits. Residents preferred the ‘No Parking’ management measure due to the width of local streets, as well as safety, access and congestion concerns. New research reveals the top annoyances for Queenslanders in summer start at home And while the outdoors lifestyle does have its own issues, it’s actually the indoors where Queenslanders struggle to cope with the hot season, with more than half of state residents (54%) suggesting it’s being too hot indoors that really gets their blood boiling – literally! According to new research conducted by Thinkinsulation, the biggest bugbear of summer for three quarters (72%) of Australians is being left dripping with sweat before they’ve even left the house. The home is supposed to be a sanctuary, however 53% of Queenslanders say it’s too hot to sleep at night during summer, even in the buff. Commenting, Claire Cunliffe, Marketing Manager at Knauf Insulation Australia, says: “For years, Australians have mastered the art of treating those small annoyances of being outdoors in the summer as part and parcel of enjoying living in a hot climate. However, when it comes to the home, not many have learned how to bring more ‘coolth’ into their lives; that is, to keep cool temperatures in and the heat out. Our research revealed a staggering one in five even believe it can be hotter inside their homes, than outside in the sun! “What many people don’t realise is that insulating your home can improve the comfort of living in the hottest months by keeping the warm air out, whilst saving on average $450* per year on energy bills.” Top 12 most annoying things about the Aussie summer: 1. Entrance via Ward St, Sandgate. www.masoniccareqld.org.au Arts book review ‘Six of One and Half a Dozen of Another’ By Jade Mitchell T he hardest part about reviewing twelve stories - even twelve short stories - is picking what aspects to focus on. Though far shorter in length than a novel, a short story still has a fullness that makes it difficult to review in just 400 words. Harder still is the fact that I rarely read short stories myself. This is a fault on my part, for as a writer you must ‘read a lot, and write a lot’, particularly in an area you wish to write in. Even so, I often find short stories too fleeting. Richard Lancaster, with his twelve short stories and one poem, does admirably in creating that fullness within each of his stories, striving to leave the reader with a sense of completeness at the end. The stories focus on emotion - love and sadness in ‘An Affair to Remember’; exasperation and humour in ‘The Caruso’s Lemon Tree’, and delve into the actions and reactions of the characters within. The stories are whole and entertaining, though some perhaps could use a bit more length in order to really bring out the shine in the stories. The characters are interesting and engaging but most importantly they are relatable, with flaws and problems that everyday people can relate to. Quite a few of the stories are set in Australia, giving the local reader an added bonus of familiarity within some of the stories. Others are set abroad, giving the book a nice balance of the familiar and the exotic. So if you enjoy short stories, go and check out Six of One and Half a Dozen of Another by Richard Lancaster. 36 February 2016 Once again, I’d like to reiterate how much I enjoyed Richard Lancaster’s short stories, particularly, ‘The Bush Doctor’. With its mysterious, open-ended finish, this story left you contemplating what exactly had happened, which I quite enjoyed. Out of ten, I rate ‘Six of One and Half a Dozen of Another’: Plot 7.5/10 Characterisation8/10 Setting 7.5/10 Predictability8/10 Overall rating 7.75/10 ‘Six of One and Half a Dozen of Another’ can be purchased by phoning Richard Lancaster on 0438 193 728 or email [email protected]. The price of the book is $17.50 plus postage and packing.
