Terri gets one of many good-bye hugs
from the Safari Lodge staff.
Steve, Paul, Roger, Jeanne, Terri, Pamela & Tom enjoy the view from the top of
Table Mountain in Capetown, South Africa.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN AFRICA!
Our travel groups help change the misperceptions some cultures may
have about people with developmental disabilities. When we arrived
at the Safari Lodge in South Africa, the manager was very concerned
about our group. “Would they be scared by the large animals and jump
out of the jeep? Would they be able to follow instructions? You’ll have
to sign special waivers.” By the second day, the staff knew all of our
names and greeted us with big smiles. By the end of the week, our
safari guide told us we were the best group he had ever taken out.
The lodge staff was so touched by us that they put on a special goodbye ceremony with drumming, singing, dancing, and many hugs and
tears. They had never done this before! Our travel programs open new
worlds of understanding for both the participants and the general population. We are changing the world – one trip at a time!
The group saw many interesting animals in Africa including zebras, lions, buffalo, giraffes, penguins, rhinos, monkeys, leopards, wildebeest, and impalas, but the favorite
was the baby elephants!
We encourage you to become involved with
New Directions by going on a tour, being a tour guide,
volunteering or providing financial support.

Reconnecting With Old Friends!
We had a fantastic Spring Event at the beautiful
Santa Barbara Courthouse on April 28! This free
event included a delicious paella lunch, costumes,
flamenco dancers, face painting, a photo booth
with exotic birds, fortune tellers, dancing, and door
prizes including trips. Over 275 people with developmental disabilities, their families, friends and
caregivers, volunteers, sponsors, and tour guides celebrated the day of fun!
A HUGE thank you to Carl W. Johnson Foundation, Irene & Wallace Franson
Foundation, and Susan Ollweiler for sponsoring this event!
TRAVEL CLUB IS BOOMING!
Thanks to the generous donations of Travel Club Sponsors, Yusuf A. Balogun (Gold Sponsor), PATHPOINT,
The Matschke Family, Nancy Samson, Santa Barbara
Elks Lodge No. 613, and Giorgi Ranches, Inc. the New
Directions Travel Club for travelers who live in the Santa
Barbara area is still going strong as it enters its 4th year!
The club is run by the members and it’s a joy to watch
as they give their committee reports, collect dues, set up
the tables and chairs, share travel experiences, and help
with the planning of Day Tours. So far in 2013 the group
went on fun and educational trips to see the NASA Space
Shuttle, a Behind the Scenes Dodger Stadium Tour, and a
tour of Hollywood! Some future day tours will be to the
Reagan Library, a Dodger’s Game, Ventura County Fair,
and Magic Mountain. If you are interested in joining the
club, call the New Directions Office for more information.
This is a GREAT time to reconnect with your travel buddies and make some new friends as well!

TOUR HIGHLIGHT - BASEBALL SPRING TRAINING
I had the opportunity to once again
be a tour guide on our annual Spring
Training trip to Phoenix, Arizona.
While I guess it’s all about the baseball, I just can’t help but reflect that
it is also about the socialization and
connection that being a fan brings
about. Of all our trips, I think Spring
Training highlights something pretty
special New Directions provides.
Sean & Tony
We go to some fabulous places and
help open up the world to our adults
with special needs, but we also help our travelers gain a network
of friends and relationships that are often difficult in the fast paced
world in which we live. The Baseball trip really brings this out as
most of the travelers on that trip come
again and again. To see the greetings,
the hugs, the shared memories that are
exchanged on our first day together is
quite simply heartwarming.
We have the “couple” who have
a Same Time Next Year relationship.
They live in opposite ends of the state
and don’t use the phone, but come
Spring Training they sit together
at games, in the vans, at meals and
renew their friendship. I am always
Andrea & Larry
amazed at the depth of baseball
by Jane Sbragia, tour guide
knowledge and talk that goes on at
meals as travelers compare pitching
prospects, talk about rookies, glory
days, and “How about those Giants!”
I am also impressed how new
travelers are quickly integrated in the
Michael & David
group, just because they share the
common interest and knowledge of
baseball. I’m always touched each year by one of our travelers whose
needs are quite intense and is brought to the trip by his father, all the
way from California. Scott has made a special bond with one of our
tour guides, Judy, and each year she assists him, helps him socialize
with everyone in the group, and then his Dad comes to the games to
join us. Seeing their father-son love and bond is so lovely, and seeing
Scott interact with others is important too.
As you can probably guess, this really is one of my favorite trips,
a large
group
with usually thirtyfive or
so of us,
which has
become
a yearly
tradition.
THANK YOU!

GOAL: $100,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS!
Yep, that’s our scholarship goal by our fiscal year end
September 30! We have already received $80,000-- and
with your help we will make it!
Many of our travelers are lucky to have financial support
from their families that enable them to enjoy a true vacation every year or so. A larger number, however, save their
earnings for four to five years and need just a little help
(maybe $100 - $300) to finally have their dream vacation
become a reality. Your donation can make the difference!
As you can see in this newsletter, NEW DIRECTIONS is
committed to ensuring that folks with developmental disabilities have the same opportunities in life as anyone else.
WAYS OF GIVING TAX-DEDUCTIBLE GIFTS
to NEW DIRECTIONS for people with disabilities, inc.
United Way: Just give them our name and address.
Pledges: We welcome pledges spread over a period of
years to fit a donor’s financial schedule. Pledges allow
us to do advance planning.
Cash: Cash gifts can be sent to our office at the address
below.
Credit Card or PayPal: Donations can be given online
or charged.
Securities such as stocks and mutual funds can offer
substantial income and/or capital gains tax advantages.
Real Estate: A current gift of all or fractional interest in
a residence, vacation home, undeveloped property or
commercial property entitles you to substantial income
tax and capital gains tax advantages.
Matching Gifts: Through your employer or workplace.
Planned Gifts: Structured as an outright gift of cash, securities, real property, business interests or other assets,
and can also be structured through tax exempt charitable
trust, life estate, charitable gift annuity or other planned
gift techniques.
If you share this goal, I hope that you will consider a gift at this
time.
There are many different ways that you can support our work.
If I can answer any questions or if you need any additional
