Here comes one week completely dedicated to Brazilian Cinema
In recent years, Brazilian film production has been on a constant rise and is being recognized worldwide for its
high quality and variety. More than 190 films were shot between 1995 and 2002 and many were well-acclaimed
by the media.
The first edition of the Festival du Film Brésilien de Montreal was a great success with an audience close to
1500 spectators who challenged heavy snow storms and the cold December weather to go to the Cinema du
Parc and see a hot selection of Brazilian film and animation productions. During seven days, screenings of
fiction films, documentaries and animated shorts were widely applauded.
Cinema du Parc welcomed a varied audience, and the reception by the media was extremely positive.
Furthermore, the festival prides itself for counting on the enthusiastic support of Brazilian and Quebcois partners,
whose generous efforts and support helped to make of this event a huge success.
Due to this successful experience, the Festival du Film Brésilien de Montréal returns to Montreal for the
second edition and proposes a rich programme:
! A selection of recent Brazilian films with subtitles in either English or French (according to the
screenings), almost all of them, never screened before in Canada;
! A focus on films dedicated to the musical genre of Bossa Nova, which celebrates its 50 years of
existence;
! An industry debate focusing on co-production between Brazil-Canada in the animated films area, to
take place on December 4th.
This event will be enhanced with the presence of Brazilian directors who will honor us with their presence during
some of the screenings.
So many opportunities to discover Brazil through the eyes of talented directors. Dream, laugh, rebel, dance,
vibrate with them. Come and discover Brazil as you have never seen before!

L’Assaut du train postal by Roberto Farias
Rio de Janeiro, June 14th, 1960, 8.25am. Trapped in their slum tenement life, 6
armed men attack and rob a train transporting the payroll for a number of
salaries. The gang splits the 27 million cruzeiros amongst themselves with one
strict rule: in order to not raise suspicion, no one must spend more than 10% of
their share each year. While the police is on their trail, conflict begins to arise
between the robbers leading to an inescapable confrontation.

Bossa Nova by Bruno Barreto
A romantic comedy wrapped up in Tom Jobim’s unforgettable Bossa Nova
standards. In the idyllic Rio landscape, nine characters cross each other’s
paths, interweaving stories of finding and losing love in Rio, a city where life
has a special rhythm all of its own. At the epicentre of these stories is Mary
Ann Simpson, an attractive former flight attendant who has been living in Rio
and working as an English teacher since the death of her husband two years
ago, who meets Pedro Paulo, a charming and handsome lawyer who is
coming out of a seven-year marriage when his wife leaves him for a Chinese
Tai-Chi teacher.

Cazuza, Time Doesn't Stop by Sandra Werneck & Walter Carvalho
A true story of the "daddy's boy". Cazuza is a dysfunctional, drug and
booze addicted, homosexual that disrespects basic social rules and terrible
and irresponsible son and man. He loves his freedom, his friend and
singing with his garage band, Barão Vermelho. His career is built by
chance because he needs to work and his father and president of
phonographic industry Som Livre gives a job opportunity in his company as
a simple employee. His talent is found by his direct chief Zeca, who
convinces Cazuza's father to release his album. In the top of his career, he
leaves the Barão Vermelho and finds that he has Aids.

love: her cousin Basílio. What begins as a great adventure turns into a
nightmare, and Luisa will come to learn the price of infidelity.
Adapted from the novel of the same title by Eça de Queiroz, one of the
greatest novelists of Portuguese literature.

The Incurable Ones by Gustavo Acioli
A man, a woman, a cheap hotel room, a game with no rules, one
night only. Each does not know who the other is and, therefore, can
be whoever they want.The man, who plans to commit suicide the next
day, finds a beautiful prostitute in a bar, and pays her to just listen to
his story. But they get attached to each other, and the situation gets
out of hand.
The Incurable Ones, winner of the competition Production of films
with tight budget of the Brazilian Ministry of Culture, is the first fulllength film noticed by Gustavo Acioli.

Mutum is a coming of age story seen through the eyes of a ten year old boy.
Thiago lives with his family on an isolated farm in the arid backlands of Minas
Gerais, Brazil. As the story unfolds and Thiago is forced to confront
separations and betrayal within the home, Thiago begins, little by little, to see
and understand a place that he had never been able to before, thus slowly
letting go of his innocence.
"Mutum" is an adaptation of the novel "Manuelzão e Miguilim" by João
Guimarães Rosa.

This documentary chronicles Brazilian director Sandra Kogut's frustrating
attempts to jump through all the bureaucratic hoops necessary for her to
obtain a Hungarian passport. Throughout this pursuit, she unleashes a
painful family history of forced emigration and a hidden legacy of antiSemitism, and confronts some essential questions: What is nationality?
What is a passport for? What should we do with our heritage? How do we
build our history and our own identity?

Cerrado, How Much? by Rosa Berardo
This movie is a documentary about the socio – environmental impacts
in the sugar cane monoculture in the brazilian middle-west, where a
bioma called "cerrado" is found. This bioma is almost in extinction due
to deforestation that has been done for the last years in order to raise
cattle and for soy monoculture. With sugar cane mono culture
advances in the "cerrado" region, mainly in goiás, we are running the
risk of losing the little amount of it left, extremely rich in medicinal
plant species. The movie invites everybody to debate about the issue,
searching a way of warning alcohol producers and big owners about
the need of a sustainable development.

Chichester's Choice by Simonee Chichester
"Chicester's Choice" follows filmmaker Simonee as she
investigates the life of her homeless father, Edgar Chichester who
abandoned her at the age of six. Twenty-three years later,
Simonee journeys to the streets of Guyana and Brazil to find and
reunite with her father in the hopes of forgiving and understanding
him while coming to terms with who she is.
Simonee's first film, it is a raw and personal coming of age story
that touches on the universal issues of homelessness, alcoholism
and abandonment.

Condor by Roberto Mader
In the 70’s, the military governments of South America collaborated to
establish the operation “Condor”, which led to the kidnapping and
murder of thousands and the exile of many others. This documentary
revisits the series of events linked to its creation through testimonials
of its victims and related characters. Through a contemporary analysis
of these events, in search of truth and justice, Roberto Mader’s film
sheds light on the history of State Terrorism, and the personal stories
of those who lived through it.

and his unconventional talent for surprising his opponents. This
documentary is a tribute to a national idol and one of the greatest Brazilian
soccer players of all time: Garrincha. It is also one of the first films to
address soccer as a major social phenomenon in Brazil. The images
captured of suffering and excited fans heralds a new approach on the big
screen.

Window of the Soul // Fenêtre sur l’âme by Walter Carvalho et João Jardim
Nineteen people with differing degrees of visual impairment discuss how
they see themselves, how they see others and how they perceive the
world. Writer and Nobel laureate José Saramago, musician Hermeto
Paschoal, filmmaker Wim Wenders, neurologist Oliver Sacks among
others, make personal and surprising revelations about various aspects
of vision. The meaning of seeing or not seeing in a world saturated by
images and, also, the importance of emotions in transforming reality if,
that is, there is such a thing common to all.

Two actors come together to pay homage to Vinícius de Moraes – poet, lyricist,

singer and composer's career and myriad of accomplishments. The film intercuts
rare archival footage, exclusive interviews, and performances of many of
Vinícius’ compositions by famous Brazilian singers.

The Xingu Tribal Societies
Photographies by Rosa Berardo
During the Festival, an exhibition will take place at the Cinéma du Parc: you will discover the photographic work
of Rosa Berardo.
Filmmaker, journalist and photographer, Rosa Berardo traveled around the globe through several countries,
from Asia to Antarctica. Her name is listed as one of the Brazilian female artists who has most distinguished
herself in the arts in recent years. In July, 2007 she was honored with the highest cultural field decoration in the
State of Goiás: the Anhanguera Badge, given by the Governor’s own hands, Alcides Rodrigues.
For six years she photographed the Indians from Xingu
National Park and has one of the largest collections
capturing the ethnic groups that live in this park. Her
photos are published in important national and international
magazines, such as Geo, Photo & Camera and Unesco
Journal. Among the most prestigious foreign places, she
exhibited her series of photos at Mankind’s Museum
(Paris), Toronto Photography Festival in 2006 (Canada)
and during the International Festival of Environmental Film
of Serra da Estrela, in Portugal.
Ph.D. in cinema, Rosa Berardo has come a long way in the audio-visual area, attending several cinema
festivals in Brazil and abroad as manager and also as jury. One of her documentaries will be presented during
the festival.
