Connections That Make for a Stronger Community Prostate Cancer Centre 2015 Annual Report This Report is dedicated to Arthur D. Davis Board Member, Prostate Cancer Centre May 19, 1920 - March 19, 2016 3 A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Prostate cancer continues to be a serious problem with significant implications for men, their families and the communities where they live. Each year over 400 Alberta men die from prostate cancer and 2,400 will be diagnosed each year. Prostate cancer is one of those rare cancers that if caught early, is very treatable. Early detection is key. Calgary has the only Canadian not for profit, one-stop Prostate Cancer Centre (PCC). Men in Calgary and southern Alberta have access to medical specialists offering evidence-based information that helps men make informed choices and in which they receive the highest quality care – from prediagnosis to after-care. In 2015, Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre entered into a period of great opportunity and complex challenges. At a time when all budgets are tight and we are seeking ways to reduce costs, our mission to over treat less and cure more takes on added urgency. In the Active Surveillance Rapid Access Clinic, we had over 600 patient visits in 2015. This clinic is critical in aiding urologists to not over treat men with low grade prostate cancer. The incredible reach of our Man VanTM program in Calgary and rural areas resulted in over 6,600 men given a PSA test in 2015. This test aids urologists in the early detection of prostate cancer. Supporting Active Surveillance in men with low-grade cancer and early detection of prostate cancer is an investment, not an expense. We want to thank our Board of Directors for their dedication and personal time over the last year to assist in the direction of the organization. Our staff and volunteers have risen to the challenge of providing all the first class programs and services we offer and also keeping a sharp eye on the bottom line. The energy and vision of our talented staff keep us going forward on the journey of providing the best for our patients and their caregivers. Society of North America. In 2001 she was appointed to the medical staff of the Calgary Health Region (now part of Alberta Health Services), a position she continues to hold. As well, Dr. Spaner works with Radiology Consultants Associated, a large group of radiologists that provides medical imaging and specialized radiology services at a number of facilities across Calgary. Shelley has a particular interest in researching the use of MRI of the prostate for diagnostic purposes. The Prostate Cancer Centre is most grateful for the wideranging support it receives, particularly from our invaluable volunteers, donors and sponsors who give generously of their time and money to support our efforts in providing the best one stop prostate cancer facility in Canada. Because we receive no government funding your donation of time and money is extremely valuable to the countless men and their families that the Centre helps each year. Our commitment to you is that we can continue to utilize your donations to fund the programs, facilities and research projects so our experts at the Centre can carry out life changing work. Sincerely, 2015 Board of Directors Mike Wilson, Chair Jon C. Truswell, Vice Chair F. Andrew Abbott Bill Brooks Dr. Kevin Carlson The Late Art D. Davis Dr. Bryan J. He was also Past Chair of Inn from the Cold and brings a great deal of not for profit experience to the table. We also welcomed Dr. Shelley Spaner to the Board. Dr. Shelly Spaner is a Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Radiology at the University of Calgary. Dr. Spaner is a member of the Alberta Society of Radiologists, the Canadian Association of Radiologists and the Radiological 4 Mike Wilson Board Chair Pam Heard Executive Director 5 We build our goals Together Community connections and collaborations has made Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre what it is today. These valuable connections have allowed us to create programs and resources for men who visit the centre, including the Rapid Access Clinics and the Man Van. We rely on the commitment of time and donations from those people and businesses in our community to continually carry out these programs and services for men. These connections show just how much the Prostate Cancer Centre has accomplished by working together with communities to help men in their fight against prostate cancer. By connecting communities and leaders to the programs and services we offer, we can achieve and strive to help even more men in Calgary and southern Alberta. Together, we can make for a stronger community. “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.” -Helen Keller We build our community through We leave tracks in our partnerships Community each of us has something to give We see our Undertakings become programs that make a hope for the reality difference future We live our lives with generosity 6 7 OUR 2015 IMPACT 3,500 12 6,628 volunteer hours ongoing research studies men tested THE MAN VAN 11 DAYS TO SEE A UROLOGIST from A family doctor, REFERRAL OR man van clinic 3,418 people used our Resource Centre 4,156 Men accessed OUR PROGRAMS & SERVICES 3,253+ community members on our social media channels Men’s Heath: “Know Your Numbers” Program The Prostate Cancer Centre’s Men’s Health Program is powered by the Man Van and expands mobile testing beyond the PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) by offering additional health measurements including: Body Mass Index (BMI), blood pressure and blood sugar. The Man Van is the perfect platform to reach men of all ages and socioeconomic status as it directly accesses rural and urban Alberta. We are very pleased to be able to offer this added service for men. Most men aged 18-50 only go to a health care provider when they are “very ill”. The main health issues for men over the age of 40 are: cancer, (colon, skin, lung and prostate), hypertension, (elevated blood pressure), diabetes (increased blood sugar), obesity, stress, depression and thoughts of suicide. In Alberta: 47% 66% of men are considered obese of men have high blood pressure 4% of men have high blood sugar In fact, out of the three measurements, 19% of men have at least two biometrics above the normal range. Providing a man with the measurements for BMI, blood pressure and blood sugar could prevent future health problems and result in a happier, healthier life. In 2016, we plan to have this program out in your community on the Man Van. 8 9 We leave tracks in our Community October 30, 2014 began as a typical workday for Murray Waddell. He works for Agrium at the plant in Carseland. When he heard the Prostate Cancer Centre’s MAN VAN had come for a visit, he booked time to stop-by. The Van was onsite to offer the employees the opportunity to get a baseline PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) blood test. “ Prostate cancer has had a positive effect on my mindset. I have no time to focus on minor problems and stuff I can’t control. Instead I have chosen to re-wind my way of thinking, I look forward to leaving the rat-race behind, to many sunsets, the great outdoors and my grandkids. -Murray Waddell He didn’t think much about the test until the next morning when he received a call from a nurse at Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre who informed him his PSA result was higher than it should be. He was sent for an additional PSA blood test, which was again higher than normal. His family doctor sent him to be seen by a specialist at the PCC. Within two weeks of his referral he met with a specialist at the Prostate Cancer Centre’s Rapid Access Clinic. After having a biopsy, he received his cancer diagnosis when he met with his Urologist. He attended the PCC’s Treatment Options Information Session to make an informed decision before deciding on a treatment. “ Agrium has had the privilege of being a presenting partner for the Prostate Cancer Centre’s rural Man Van program since it first hit the highways in 2012. The program involves a mobile clinic that travels throughout rural Alberta and educates thousands of men each year about the importance of early detection of prostate cancer. It also provides men with the opportunity to have a baseline PSA blood test. There have been countless success stories over the years but when “one of our own” long time employees took a few minutes to get tested when the Man Van rolled into the Carseland location the results became very personal to him and the rest of our team. -Chuck Magro, President & CEO of Agrium THE Man vanTM Our Man Vans offers clinics in southern Alberta to capture men in comfortable environments near their work places or while they are pursuing interests or hobbies. Murray was relatively aware of the disease, as his own father had been treated for prostate cancer. He was diligent in booking his annual physical through his family doctor and always ensured the PSA test was ticked as part of his annual blood work – he knew his risk factor was higher than most with a family member previously diagnosed. Murray has now completed his treatment and with the help of the Prostate Cancer Centre medical team who assisted him before, during and after his treatment he is now healthier than ever. Murray has also joined the team of more than 80 volunteers at the Prostate Cancer Centre. Keep your eyes on the road for the travelling MAN VAN as Murray might be the smiling driver behind the wheel! In 2015... 3,420 men received PSA tests on the urban MAN VAN. 53% had never had a PSA blood test before. 3,208 61% men received PSA tests on the rural MAN VAN. had never had a PSA blood test before. PROUD SPONSORS Since 2009 Over 10 combines for cures TM 24,885 men have received psa tests on the urban AND RURAL man vanS. 11 We build our goals Together Carolyn and Fran have been volunteering with the Prostate Cancer Centre for 5 years. These ladies assemble patient information materials, set up patient sessions and assist in any other duties that arise. Martin has been volunteering with the Prostate Cancer Centre since 2012. He also spends time at the Centre by helping at events and making donor thank you phone calls. Q: What is your role at the information desk? C&F: We help and assist anyone coming to the Prostate Cancer Centre or Southern Alberta Institute of Urology. We also direct people if they are lost and need to be over at the hospital. Q: What is your role on the MAN VAN? M: My role as a MAN VAN host is to greet men and register them. I also explain to them what a PSA blood test is and make them feel comfortable. I enjoy this part of the clinics. Q: In your opinions, how does your role at the information desk connect to the community? C&F: Volunteering is an important part of the community. It’s contagious because once someone sees the helpfulness and kindness of a volunteer, they are motivated to help and volunteer in their own community. Q: In your opinion, how does your role on the MAN VAN connect to the community? M: I believe the connection to the community comes by going to their community, talking to them and offering our services (to get a baseline PSA blood test) without having to wait, like they would in their doctors offices. I think it shows that we care about men and want to help them. Q: What is your favorite connection you’ve made from volunteering at the information desk? C&F: One man came out of his appointment with a big grin and said “I got good news from my doctor and I don’t have to come back!” and he jumped up and clicked his heels together as he walked down the hall. 12 “ Those smiles and friendly hellos help make the day a little brighter. “ I explain to them what the PSA test is, it’s free, takes about 5 minutes and could save a life. Q: What is your favorite connection you’ve made from volunteering on the MAN VAN? M: My favorite connection is the closeness and camaraderie of the clinic members. They aspire to have a good clinic and have fun doing it. 13 We see our Undertakings become programs that make a reality difference Research activities at the Prostate Cancer Centre continued to grow in 2015. Our enthusiastic team participated in more than double the research programs from the previous year. These programs included studies to assess new treatments, new methods of diagnosis, and observational studies to determine how approved medications are working for patients living with prostate cancer. The quality of the research conducted at the Prostate Cancer Centre is second to none. Regularly, industry sponsors (primarily pharmaceutical companies) approach the Prostate Cancer Centre to participate in new studies. Each study is reviewed carefully to ensure there is potential benefit to our patients. In many cases the studies we conduct offer the opportunity for patients to receive a treatment they otherwise would not have access to. These studies often involve long term follow-up with the patient by regular clinic visits and phone calls. By the end of 2015 more than 50 patients were being assessed and followed closely by the research team. We ask 100 guys to strip down to their underwear to raise awareness and money for the Calgary Prostate Cancer Centre. The inaugural fundraiser took place in 2010 and by the second year the guys were begging us to be a part of this amazing event. Of course we couldn’t leave them in their underwear in the freezing cold for too long. With the generosity of our many sponsors, we were able to dress every participant in a full espy outfit valued at over $750. #nakedespy raised over $75,000 in 2015 alone and in total nearly $200,000. The Okotoks Dawgs bring more than baseball to Dad’s on Father’s Day… It has become an annual tradition every June to see Dad’s lined up outside Seaman Stadium. All the riveting action is inside the field but another important part of this annual Father’s Day game commences in the parking lot. The Okotoks Dawgs and Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre have teamed up to ensure every Dad has the opportunity to take care of their health and also enjoy their favorite pastime – cheering on the Dawgs. The Man Van has been visiting the Stadium for the past four years and has caught up with many men who never have the time to visit their doctor during regular hours. Rain or shine and regardless of the final score on the board every man that visits the van is a winner. espy’s proprietor, Megan Szanik created #nakedespy after her father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009. As always, Megan’s main goal was to support local and she wanted to ensure money raised in Calgary, stayed in Calgary. Once she started to see how many people she knew had a personal connection to prostate cancer “the idea just kind of blossomed and grew from there.” says Szanik. 16 17 each of us has something to give Gold (to $100,000) Visionary GIFTS OVER $1 million Arthur D.
