Summer Sports June is an exciting month, as two of the biggest international sports competitions take place this month. The World Cup, the biggest international soccer championship, will take place from Thursday, June 12th to Sunday, July 13th. This championship has taken place every four years since 1930. This year’s host is Brazil, with a total of 64 matches being played in twelve different cities. Wimbledon, one of tennis’ best known competitions, will be held Monday, June 23rd to Sunday, July 6th in London, England. The Wimbledon tournament began in 1877 and continues to observe many of its original traditions. Did You Know? One of the all time favorite Father’s Day gifts is the necktie. Its history can be traced back to 1668 when Croatian mercenaries fighting for Austria appeared in France wearing linen and muslin scarves around their necks, thereby starting a fashion craze. The Bundle of Sticks A father, whose sons were always quarreling with one another, had tried for years to end their fighting. At his wit’s end, he called his sons together and placed a bundle of sticks in front of them. After tying the sticks tightly into a bundle, he told his sons, one after another, to pick up the bundle and break it. They all tried, but none could do it. The father then untied the bundle and gave them the sticks to break one by one, which they did with great ease. “So it is with you,” said the father. “As long as you are united, you can defeat any enemy. But if you are divided among yourselves, you’ll be broken as easily as these sticks.” Moral: In unity there is strength. Adapted from an Aesop fable Don’t Throw Out the What??? Flag Facts Life in the Early Days… Flag Day is June 14th. Here are some facts you may not know about our nation’s flag. The flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to compose “The Star-Spangled Banner” measured 42 feet by 30 feet, used more than 400 yards of material, weighed in excess of 200 pounds and cost $405.90 to make. In order to withstand being pelted with rocks and dust particles, the flag that flew on the moon was made of metal. Only the President and Governor of a state can order flags on government buildings to be flown at half staff. Did you know that statues in parks have their own secret code? If a statue of a person on a horse has both front legs in the air, the person died in battle; if the horse has one front leg in the air, the person died as a result of wounds received in battle; if the horse has all four legs on the ground, the person died of natural causes. Most people got married in June, way back when, because they took their yearly bath in May and were still smelling pretty good by June. However, they were starting to smell a little, so brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odor. When they did bathe, a big tub filled with hot water was prepared. The man of the house had the privilege of bathing in the nice clean water, then all the other sons and men, then the women, the children, and finally the babies. By then the water was so dirty you could actually lose someone in it. Hence the saying, “Don’t throw out the baby with the bath water.” Parents can only give good advice or put them on the right paths, but the final forming of a person’s character lies in their own hands. ~Anne Frank Medical Memo: Prostate Problems The prostate is a gland about the size of a walnut that sits just outside the bladder in men. The likelihood of having complications with the prostate increases after the age of 50. The prostate usually grows larger with age. The enlargement can squeeze the urethra and make it difficult to completely empty the bladder. The most common sign of enlargement is an urge to use the bathroom frequently. Other warning signs include a weak or slow urinary stream, or straining to urinate. Sometimes an enlarged prostate can be treated with medication. Avoiding antihistamines and decongestants, which can cause urine retention, sometime helps. The inconvenience of getting up to go to the bathroom at night can be reduced by merely cutting down on beverages before bedtime (especially ones that contain alcohol or caffeine). An infection of the prostate gland is called prostatitis. Symptoms include pain and burning upon urination, blood in the urine and, in severe cases, back pain, fever and chills. Most types of prostatitis can be cured with antibiotics, and the symptoms can be relieved by taking hot baths and drinking large amounts of liquids. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men (behind skin cancer). It is slow-growing and easy to treat when it is caught early, but it is not always discovered because its symptoms resemble those of less serious problems (such as those described above). Certain risk factors may make you more susceptible to developing prostate cancer, including age, family history and a high-fat/low-fruit diet. The best screening tools are the PSA blood test and a doctor’s physical exam. Thoughts on Dads He didn’t tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it. -Clarence Budington Kelland By the time a man realizes that maybe his father was right, he usually has a son who thinks he’s wrong. -Charles Wadworth Small boys become big men through the influence of big men who care about small boys. -Anonymous
