Jackson honors Fatal Hit and Run

Last Friday, June 24, at about
7:12 a.m., officers from the Oxnard Police Department and emergency personnel responded to a
hit and run traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicyclist. The
collision occurred on Lakehurst
Street north of Janetwood Drive.
Preliminary investigation indicates that the 2001 Ford Expedition collided into the bicyclist
near the intersection. After the
collision with the bicyclist, the
Ford Expedition swerved to the
opposite side of the road and
collided with a tree. The driver,
17 years old and Oxnard resident, fled the scene on foot and
was located in the area moments
later. The driver was transported
to the Ventura County Medical
Center, and was later arrested.
The pedestrian was transported

faced significant barriers. This
year, as the organization celebrates its tenth anniversary, their
services have expanded to include
weekly foodbanks that feed upwards of 250 families, assistance
for victims of sexual assault, instruction in basic computer skills,
and free clinics to test for diabetes,
obesity, and blood pressure.

Roberts then falsely claimed to the

had been hacked.
Roberts was placed on felony
probation for three years. In addition he will be serving 364 days
in jail, he is required to get sex
offender counseling and must pay
more than $2,500 in fines and fees.

The suspect, described as a light
skinned Hispanic male was observed by Vons Loss Prevention
Officers (LPO’s) concealing
merchandise. After passing all
manned cash registers and exiting the store with the concealed
merchandise he was contacted
by the LPO’s. The suspect then
brandished a handgun at the
LPO’s and stated “I don’t want
to hurt you over some little stuff
like this.” In fear for their lives,
the LPO’s retreated back into the
store and the suspect left the area.
Investigators from the Violent
Crimes Unit (VCU) investigated
the robbery. During the investigation, VCU investigators were
able to positively identify, Steven
Leal, as the suspect who commit-

ted the crime. Leal was arrested
and charged with the robbery and
a special enhancement for using a
handgun during the commission
of the crime.
The Oxnard Police Department said that they wanted to
inform citizens that what some
might consider a simple arrest
for shoplifting can easily turn into
a more serious charge of felony
robbery. Using force or fear to
push past or get away from a store
employee or security guard is
enough to trigger what is known
as an “Estes Robbery” no matter
how much merchandise you are
suspected of shoplifting. In some
cases, when a weapon is used
there are additional sentencing
enhancements.
On June 21, 2016, at the Ventura County Superior Court, Steven
Leal pled guilty to robbery. Leal
received a sentence of 8 years in
prison for his crime.
This is another example of the
hard work and dedication by the
officers and investigators of the
Oxnard Police Department, as
well as the collaborative effort
from members of the community,
crime victims and the District
Attorney’s Office.

La policía decomisó docenas de medicamentos, que sospechan provienen de países latinoamericanos
y entre los cuales se encuentran pastillas para aliviar síntomas como el dolor o la fiebre.
El Departamento de Policía de
Phoenix dio a conocer el resultado
de una investigación de dos años
en contra de negocios conocidos
como "yerberías" que se dedicaban a vender medicamentos sin
receta y otros falsificados a su
clientela.
En una conferencia de prensa,
el vocero del Departamento de
Policía en Phoenix, James Holmes, indicó que por lo menos
26 personas han sido detenidas,
algunos de ellas de origen hispano
y que esta cifra podría aumentar.
Algunos de los detenidos son
los mismo dueños de estos negocios.
"Estamos hablando de medicamentos que eran vendidos sin
receta, de forma oculta, a su clientela y algunos de estos medica-
mentos no sabemos exactamente
su contenido", detalló Holmes.
Las autoridades decomisaron
docenas de medicamentos, que
sospechan provienen de países latinoamericanos y entre los cuales
se encuentran pastillas para aliviar
síntomas como el dolor o la fiebre
y suplementos alimenticios para
bajar de peso, entre otras.
El departamento de la policía
indicó que varios de estos medicamentos está prohibida su venta en
el país ya que no cumplen con los
requisitos establecidos de control
de calidad.
"Otro serio problema es que
algunos de estos medicamentos
no se pudo saber si realmente
contienen los ingredientes que
dicen (contener), ya que la mayoría están manufacturados en
laboratorios donde se pueden contaminar de otros ingredientes",
alertó Holmes.
Las yerberías son negocios
populares entre la comunidad hispana, principalmente inmigrantes
donde suelen acudir para comprar
remedios naturales para algunas
enfermedades y malestares.
Las autoridades indicaron que
el problema con estas yerberías
surge cuando comienzan a vender medicamentos prohibidos o
traídos de manera ilegal al país.

Estudiar para triunfar
53 estudiantes de preparatoria y alrededor de 160 acreedores de certificados de equivalencia
de high school celebraron su graduación este pasado 21 de junio.

Seguramente se ha dado usted
cuenta de que hay personas que
parece que nacieron marcadas por
la buena suerte y que todo lo que
hacen les sale bien; que donde se
pongan, ahí les llegarán las buenas
oportunidades, mientras que hay
otras que tal parece que nacieron
estrelladas y que por más que lo
intenten nunca llegarán a buen
puerto.
Quien crea en filosofías fatalistas dirá que el destino de estas
personas ya está marcado; sin embargo, si usted cree que el destino
es algo que puede uno construir
en base a estudio, trabajo y perseverancia, entonces estaremos
de acuerdo en que entre más se
prepare, mejores herramientas
tendrá para enfrentar la cada vez
más difícil y competitiva carrera
laboral.
Con esto en mente, 53 estudiantes de preparatoria y alrededor de
160 acreedores de certificados de
equivalencia de high school celebraron su graduación este pasado
21 de junio. Esto nada tiene de
extraño ya que en nuestra ciudad
junio es mes de graduaciones, lo
interesante del caso es que todas
estas personas son graduadas de la
Escuela de Adultos de Oxnard, lo
que hace que el mérito sea mayor,
si se me permite expresarlo en esa
forma.
Y es que no es para menos, graduarse del bachillerato cuando ya
no se es un adolescente, teniendo
que trabajar tiempo completo a la
vez que tener que sacar adelante
a una familia es un logro digno
de todo reconocimiento. Así lo
expresaron José Aguilar, Elizabeth
Garduño y Alberto Acho López,
graduados que fungieron como
oradores y dieron a conocer sus
vivencias y reflexiones acerca
del recién logrado diploma. Fue
muy emotivo oír los testimonios
de estos esforzados adultos que
cumplieron su sueño de obtener
su certificados de preparatoria,
y particularmente Alberto Acho
quien se llevó la tarde al expresar
su discurso en español, inglés y
mixteco.
El evento fue presidido por
el personal administrativo de la
escuela de adultos: las conse-
jeras Elizabeth Tobías y Alexa
Sánchez, y la directora Diana
Batista. Por su parte, el Distrito
Unido de Preparatorias de Oxnard
(OUHSD) envió a los doctores
Ray González, Gary Davis, Tom
McCoy y al presidente de la Mesa
Directiva del Distrito, el señor
Wayne Edmonds.
La oradora invitada fue la ex
Miss California y ahora escritora y
motivadora Christina Nepstad, autora del libro: “The Power Seat”.
Esta hermosa mujer cautivó a la
audiencia al platicar cómo, a pesar de haber sido Miss California
y luego haber quedado entre las
diez finalistas del certamen Miss
USA años atrás, quedó congelada
al no ser capaz de responder a una
pregunta con respecto a las libras
que tenía de más, y que le hizo el
entrevistador durante la competencia. Eso la llevó a convertirse
en motivadora y entrenadora de
mujeres conferenciantes. La señorita Nepstad nos dijo: “Todo
lo que oí durante la entrevista fue
‘problemas de sobrepeso’ y no
puede pensar en nada más. No
obstante haber ensayado cada posible pregunta que se me pudiera
haber hecho, no estaba yo preparada para esa específicamente.
Ese hecho sacudió mi confianza
y me sumió en la confusión. Sin
embargo, también me impulsó
a ser motivadora, y es lo que he
estado haciendo desde entonces”.
Por su parte, la Directora de la
Escuela de Adultos, Diana Batista,
hizo patente su satisfacción por
ver el esfuerzo realizado por sus
estudiantes para lograr sus diplomas, así como el compromiso que
por más de 75 años su institución
ha mantenido con la comunidad
del Condado de Ventura de ofrecer
educación de calidad a bajo costo
para aquellas personas convencidas de que, como dijo el graduado
de GED en español, Alberto Acho,
la educación es la llave mágica
que puede abrir las puertas a un
mejor futuro.
La Escuela para Adultos de

The suspect, described as a light
skinned Hispanic male was observed by Vons Loss Prevention
Officers (LPO’s) concealing
merchandise. After passing all
manned cash registers and exiting the store with the concealed
merchandise he was contacted
by the LPO’s. The suspect then
brandished a handgun at the
LPO’s and stated “I don’t want
to hurt you over some little stuff
like this.” In fear for their lives,
the LPO’s retreated back into the
store and the suspect left the area.
Investigators from the Violent
Crimes Unit (VCU) investigated
the robbery. During the investigation, VCU investigators were
able to positively identify, Steven
Leal, as the suspect who commit-

ted the crime. Leal was arrested
and charged with the robbery and
a special enhancement for using a
handgun during the commission
of the crime.
The Oxnard Police Department said that they wanted to
inform citizens that what some
might consider a simple arrest
for shoplifting can easily turn into
a more serious charge of felony
robbery. Using force or fear to
push past or get away from a store
employee or security guard is
enough to trigger what is known
as an “Estes Robbery” no matter
how much merchandise you are
suspected of shoplifting. In some
cases, when a weapon is used
there are additional sentencing
enhancements.
On June 21, 2016, at the Ventura County Superior Court, Steven
Leal pled guilty to robbery. Leal
received a sentence of 8 years in
prison for his crime.
This is another example of the
hard work and dedication by the
officers and investigators of the
Oxnard Police Department, as
well as the collaborative effort
from members of the community,
crime victims and the District
Attorney’s Office.

Los fuegos artificiales/cohetes
son prohibidos en la Ciudad de
Oxnard. Estos pueden causar
heridas muy serias y incendios
a las estructuras, los carros, y

persona que posee, guarde, venda,
use, transporte, o tenga consigo
fuegos artificiales/cohetes puede
ser arrestado o recibir una infracción de hasta $1,000. Los “party
poppers” y “snap caps” se consideran legales y no son clasificados

La policía decomisó docenas de medicamentos, que sospechan provienen de países latinoamericanos
y entre los cuales se encuentran pastillas para aliviar síntomas como el dolor o la fiebre.
El Departamento de Policía de
Phoenix dio a conocer el resultado
de una investigación de dos años
en contra de negocios conocidos
como "yerberías" que se dedicaban a vender medicamentos sin
receta y otros falsificados a su
clientela.
En una conferencia de prensa,
el vocero del Departamento de
Policía en Phoenix, James Holmes, indicó que por lo menos
26 personas han sido detenidas,
algunos de ellas de origen hispano
y que esta cifra podría aumentar.
Algunos de los detenidos son
los mismo dueños de estos negocios.
"Estamos hablando de medicamentos que eran vendidos sin
receta, de forma oculta, a su clientela y algunos de estos medica-
mentos no sabemos exactamente
su contenido", detalló Holmes.
Las autoridades decomisaron
docenas de medicamentos, que
sospechan provienen de países latinoamericanos y entre los cuales
se encuentran pastillas para aliviar
síntomas como el dolor o la fiebre
y suplementos alimenticios para
bajar de peso, entre otras.
El departamento de la policía
indicó que varios de estos medicamentos está prohibida su venta en
el país ya que no cumplen con los
requisitos establecidos de control
de calidad.
"Otro serio problema es que
algunos de estos medicamentos
no se pudo saber si realmente
contienen los ingredientes que
dicen (contener), ya que la mayoría están manufacturados en
laboratorios donde se pueden contaminar de otros ingredientes",
alertó Holmes.
Las yerberías son negocios
populares entre la comunidad hispana, principalmente inmigrantes
donde suelen acudir para comprar
remedios naturales para algunas
enfermedades y malestares.
Las autoridades indicaron que
el problema con estas yerberías
surge cuando comienzan a vender medicamentos prohibidos o
traídos de manera ilegal al país.
El operativo, que llevó el nombre de "Operation Unscripted"
(Operación sin guión) fue un
esfuerzo conjunto entre múltiples
agencias policiales incluyendo la
Agencia Antidrogas de Estados
Unidos (DEA) y la Oficina de
Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE).

conoció a una mujer utilizando la
aplicación "OK Cupid" Él envió
falsas fotos de sí mismo y mintió

ella. Después que recibió las
imágenes no desnudas, Roberts
fabricó una falsa identidad en
línea y exigió fotos totalmente
desnudas de su víctima. Cuando
la víctima se negó, Roberts publicó las imágenes para que su
familia y amigos pudieran verlas.
Roberts luego le hecho mentiras
a la víctima de que su cuenta en
la aplicación "OK Cupid" había
sido hackeada.
Roberts fue puesto en libertad
condicional por el delito grave
durante tres años. Además tendrá
que pasar 364 días en la cárcel
y tendrá que asistir a clases de
asesoramiento para delincuentes
sexuales y deberá pagar más de
$2,500 en multas y honorarios
por los servicios que recibirá.

Estudiar para triunfar
53 estudiantes de preparatoria y alrededor de 160 acreedores de certificados de equivalencia
de high school celebraron su graduación este pasado 21 de junio.

Seguramente se ha dado usted
cuenta de que hay personas que
parece que nacieron marcadas por
la buena suerte y que todo lo que
hacen les sale bien; que donde se
pongan, ahí les llegarán las buenas
oportunidades, mientras que hay
otras que tal parece que nacieron
estrelladas y que por más que lo
intenten nunca llegarán a buen
puerto.
Quien crea en filosofías fatalistas dirá que el destino de estas
personas ya está marcado; sin embargo, si usted cree que el destino
es algo que puede uno construir
en base a estudio, trabajo y perseverancia, entonces estaremos
de acuerdo en que entre más se
prepare, mejores herramientas
tendrá para enfrentar la cada vez
más difícil y competitiva carrera
laboral.
Con esto en mente, 53 estudiantes de preparatoria y alrededor de
160 acreedores de certificados de
equivalencia de high school celebraron su graduación este pasado
21 de junio. Esto nada tiene de
extraño ya que en nuestra ciudad
junio es mes de graduaciones, lo
interesante del caso es que todas
estas personas son graduadas de la
Escuela de Adultos de Oxnard, lo
que hace que el mérito sea mayor,
si se me permite expresarlo en esa
forma.
Y es que no es para menos, graduarse del bachillerato cuando ya
no se es un adolescente, teniendo
que trabajar tiempo completo a la
vez que tener que sacar adelante
a una familia es un logro digno
de todo reconocimiento. Así lo
expresaron José Aguilar, Elizabeth
Garduño y Alberto Acho López,
graduados que fungieron como
oradores y dieron a conocer sus
vivencias y reflexiones acerca
del recién logrado diploma. Fue
muy emotivo oír los testimonios
de estos esforzados adultos que
cumplieron su sueño de obtener
su certificados de preparatoria,
y particularmente Alberto Acho
quien se llevó la tarde al expresar
su discurso en español, inglés y
mixteco.
El evento fue presidido por
el personal administrativo de la
escuela de adultos: las conse-
jeras Elizabeth Tobías y Alexa
Sánchez, y la directora Diana
Batista. Por su parte, el Distrito
Unido de Preparatorias de Oxnard
(OUHSD) envió a los doctores
Ray González, Gary Davis, Tom
McCoy y al presidente de la Mesa
Directiva del Distrito, el señor
Wayne Edmonds.
La oradora invitada fue la ex
Miss California y ahora escritora y
motivadora Christina Nepstad, autora del libro: “The Power Seat”.
Esta hermosa mujer cautivó a la
audiencia al platicar cómo, a pesar de haber sido Miss California
y luego haber quedado entre las
diez finalistas del certamen Miss
USA años atrás, quedó congelada
al no ser capaz de responder a una
pregunta con respecto a las libras
que tenía de más, y que le hizo el
entrevistador durante la competencia. Eso la llevó a convertirse
en motivadora y entrenadora de
mujeres conferenciantes. La señorita Nepstad nos dijo: “Todo
lo que oí durante la entrevista fue
‘problemas de sobrepeso’ y no
puede pensar en nada más. No
obstante haber ensayado cada posible pregunta que se me pudiera
haber hecho, no estaba yo preparada para esa específicamente.
Ese hecho sacudió mi confianza
y me sumió en la confusión. Sin
embargo, también me impulsó
a ser motivadora, y es lo que he
estado haciendo desde entonces”.
Por su parte, la Directora de la
Escuela de Adultos, Diana Batista,
hizo patente su satisfacción por
ver el esfuerzo realizado por sus
estudiantes para lograr sus diplomas, así como el compromiso que
por más de 75 años su institución
ha mantenido con la comunidad
del Condado de Ventura de ofrecer
educación de calidad a bajo costo
para aquellas personas convencidas de que, como dijo el graduado
de GED en español, Alberto Acho,
la educación es la llave mágica
que puede abrir las puertas a un
mejor futuro.
La Escuela para Adultos de
Oxnard agradece a la comunidad
por su confianza y preferencia,
y a VIDA, el medio impreso de
comunicación por excelencia por
estar siempre ahí, codo con codo
luchando siempre por el bienestar
