WELCOME
Welcome to the Town of Mali Lošinj and
the Lošinj archipelago. Enjoy the scent
of the sea and the hospitality of the local
people.
The Cres and Lošinj archipelago in Kvarner
Bay is the largest group of islands in the
Adriatic, made up of 36 islands, islets and
reefs. The Town of Mali Lošinj includes the
southern part of the island of Cres, the island
of Lošinj and a group of smaller islands and
islets (Susak, Ilovik, Unije, Male Srakane and
Vele Srakane etc.).
The island climate is very pleasant all the year
round. Century-old pine forests and a variety
of plant and animal species are the distinctive
features of these islands. When we add 120
years of tourist tradition, the result is an ideal
holiday area.
Lošinj’s sights include numerous churches
and works of art. The antique, approximately
2000-year-old bronze statue of the Greek
athlete Apoxyiomenos, found in the Lošinj
sea, stands out among them.
One of the facts that we point out to with
particular pleasure is that the area around
the island of Lošinj is the habitat of the last
large group of bottlenose dolphins (tursiops
truncatus) in the Northern Adriatic, which is
indicative of an exceptional level of cleanness
of the sea.
These pages provide basic information

NATURAL FEATURES
on Lošinj and the surrounding area: the
historical sights, cultural events and
entertainment during the summer, as well as
the gastronomy, accommodation, sports and
recreation facilities.
Enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate, the sea,
the sun and the beauty of the green landscape
hiking, cycling and walking. Discover the
magnificent marine world diving, swimming and
sailing.
Discover and experience the charm of this
unique island, which delights all of its visitors
year after year.
The Cres and Lošinj archipelago, partly
crossed by the 45o latitude, lies in the
middle of the northern hemisphere. A
greater part of the archipelago is situated
within the subtropical zone of the southern
half of the northern hemisphere, which
influences the climate and the life-style of
the people. The whole coastline abounds in
attractive bays and coves, ideal for swimming
and sunbathing. Lošinj’s highest hill is the
wooded hill of Osoršćica (588 m), which
is some 10 kilometres long and stretches
along the northern part of the island. On
the island of Cres, which is generally higher
than Lošinj, the highest hill is Sis (650 m).
Cres has a freshwater lake, which is a natural
phenomenon. It is needless to say that
so much drinking water on a karst island
represents a real treasure.
The Lošinj archipelago includes the island
of Lošinj (74.68 km²), a group of smaller
islands, Unije ( 16.77 km²), Ilovik (5.88 km²),
Susak (3.76 km²), Vele Srakane (1.17 km²), as
well as a number of small uninhabited islets peaceful oases, where one can spend the day
relaxing and swimming.
The main characteristics of the climate
are mild winter and not too hot summer.
The island lies at a sufficient distance from
the mainland, so that the climate is mainly
influenced by the sea. The sea temperatures
are higher than the air temperatures during
the autumn, winter and the first part
of spring. The predominantly maritime
character of the climate is also reflected in
its effect on summer sultriness. Mali Lošinj,
namely, has a considerably smaller number of
days with a maximum air temperature higher
than 25°C.
Owing to the annual average insolation of
approx. 2,580 hours and a very low average
number of cloudy days Lošinj ranks among
the sunniest areas in Europe.
Characteristics of the micro-climate of Lošinj:
• Average air temperature during the summer
23.5 °C
• Average air temperature during the winter
7.9 °C
• 2580 sunny hours in a year
• Humidity 62% - 73%
• Pressure 1006 - 1014 hPa
• On average 4 days a year of fog with
visibility less then 1 km
• Average wind speed force 3
• Maximum sea temperature 23.6 °C
• Minimum sea temperature 11.8 °C
NATURAL FEATURES
The mild climate of the island of Lošinj
is reflected in a great variety of plant
species. Some 1,100 plant species, among
which as many as 230 medicinal and edible
wild-growing plants, have been identified.
Particularly interesting are some plant
species that are not typical of this latitude,
such as lemon, date, banana, eucalyptus,
cedar and sequoia. Parts of natural heritage
are protected as forest parks. The bestknown forest park of Čikat was planted by
Ambroz Haračić, professor of the famous
Lošinj Nautical School, at the end of the 19th
century. A great variety of exotic plants,
which can be seen in Lošinj gardens, have
been brought from other parts of the world
by seamen and sea captains.
In Veli Lošinj’s park, established by the
Hapsburg Archduke Charles Stephen, there
are some 200 different species of trees from
all parts of the world.
It is significant that there are no poisonous
snakes on the Lošinj archipelago. There are
just lizards and non-poisonous snakes. The
island of Lošinj is the habitat of geckos, small
lizards of the gekkonidae family. Geckos are
protected species. Killing geckos is forbidden
and punished by law. Jakov Matunci, an
eleven-year-old from Mali Lošinj, was
placed third in the World Competition in
Environmental Protection Volvo Adventure
in Goteborg, Sweden, for his project of
6|7
HISTORY
protection of geckos, small Mediterranean
lizards found on most Adriatic islands, in
May 2004. There is small game, as well as
big game on the island - fallow deer and
moufflons, which have been colonized in this
area. There is a lot of feathered game. The
birds of prey found in this area include hawks,
sparrow-hawks, falcons and giant griffon
vultures. Because of the small number of
preserved individuals griffon vultures have
been protected by law as an endangered
species.
The most common domestic animals found in
this area are sheep. The sheep on the rocky
pastures in the northern part of the island of
Lošinj present an idyllic picture.
The local waters of the archipelago abound
in various fish, shellfish and molluscs, such as
cuttle-fish, squid and octopus.
Unlike some waters of the neighbouring
countries, where they have become extinct,
dolphins are frequent visitors of this area,
playful and ready to make contact with humans.
In ancient times the Cres and Lošinj
archipelago was known as the Apsyrtides.
The name is derived from that of the mythical
hero Apsyrtus.
Once upon a time there was a king who had a
golden fleece. Jason, a brave young man, got hold
of the fleece with cunning and the help of the king’s
daughter Medea, who was a witch. Jason took
to flight by his ship the Argo with his friends the
Argonauts. The king’s son Apsyrtus went in pursuit
of them by his ship. Medea tricked Apsyrtus into
negotiations and Jason killed him from ambush.
Medea cut up his dead body and threw his limbs into
the sea, where they turned into Apsyrtus’ islands –
the Apsyrtides.
In times of old the islands of Cres and Lošinj used
be a whole. The islands were later separated by
an artificial canal at Osor to satisfy the needs of
sea trade on the so-called Amber Route.
Historical changes have hit these islands like
sea waves. Millennia have passed like a storm.
The presence of small and big nations that have
conquered this area has left permanent traces
of their material culture, brought with them or
created on this soil. The oldest island settlements
(Lubenice, Osor, Beli) have more than 4000
years of history. The Roman town of Osor was
the seat of the bishopric in the 9th century.
Lošinj, which had been almost uninhabited
until the middle of the 13th century, developed
into a leading regional maritime power by the
19th century. The town of Lošinj became the
second most important port in the Adriatic,
immediately after Trieste. The inhabitants of
Lošinj were not only known for their skillfulness
in constructing sailing ships but they were also
known as the best seamen in the Mediterranean.
The architectural appearance of the centre of
Mali Lošinj, which has remained almost the same
until the present day, was determined in that
period. The beginnings of tourism date back to
1885, when health tourism began to develop on
the island.
On 21st January 1885 the first tourist was
registered.
The first hotel in Mali Lošinj, named Vindobona,
was built in 1887. Owing to the exceptional
characteristics of the climate Lošinj was
proclaimed a climatic health resort by a decree
of the Ministry of Health of the AustrianHungarian Monarchy in 1892. Soon it became
a popular holiday destination of the AustrianHungarian aristocracy, who built numerous villas
and summer residences on the island.
Lošinj is still a famous climatic health resort suitable
for treating diseases of the respiratory tract and
allergies. The island offers ideal conditions for a
physical and psychological recovery, particularly
during the winter, spring and autumn. The local
hotels offer weekend and week’s anti-stress and
wellness programmes.
DOLPHINS
The Lošinj Dolphin Reserve was
established in the waters of Cres and
Lošinj - the first protected marine area for
dolphins in the Mediterranean. The area of
Cres and Lošinj is one of the healthiest and
the bestpreserved areas in the Northern
Adriatic.
In 1987 a research team of the Tethys
Institute started long-term research of the
biology, ecology and social structure of the
community of bottlenose dolphins found
in the waters around the Cres and Lošinj
islands. This group of dolphins is now one
of the best researched groups of dolphins
in the Mediterranean. The number of
individuals is estimated at some 120. This
group of dolphins is very small, isolated and
vulnerable.
Dolphins used to have a reputation for
stealing fish and destroying fishermen’s
nets. Rewards for killing dolphins used to be
offered. Now we look at them as intelligent,
sophisticated animals, which live in complex
communities and represent an essential part
of the marine ecological system. Observing
them in their natural environment is an
unforgettable experience.
By participating in the action "Adopt a
dolphin” you can support research and
educational activities in this field and help
protect the dolphins and their habitat.
Your contribution will serve to sensitize

the communitiy at both the local and state
level through activities such as "Dolphin
Day” and thematic lectures in schools and
kindergartens, as well as to promote the
environmental protection of these islands.
"Dolphin Day” is an annual event that has
taken place in Veli Lošinj since 1993 on the first
Saturday in August.

Owing to its mild climate, throughout
the year you can go walking and
mountaineering over no less than 220 km
of pathways and mountain trails laid out
over the five islands. The trails are varied,
ranging from easy to mediumdifficult and
very demanding hiking trails. The hills of
Osoršćica (Nerezine) and St. John (Veli
Lošinj) are found very attractive by hikers.
The footpaths along the sea-shore are ideal
for long walks.
If you would like to experience one of the
loveliest panoramic views of the whole
Lošinj archipelago, climb Osoršćica, one
of the most beautiful mountains on the
Adriatic islands!
Osoršćica stretches along the northern
part of the island of Lošinj. The highest
peak Televrin lies at a height of 588 m. From
the peak of Sv. Mikul, which is somewhat
lower (557 m), on clear days a magnificent
panoramic view opens up. It stretches over
the whole Lošinj archipelago, the islands of
Cres, Rab, Pag, Silba, the coastline of Istrian
Peninsula and the mountain massifs of
Gorski Kotar and Velebit.
Osoršćica can be climbed by footpaths from
both Osor and Nerezine. The old traditional
footpath from Nerezine was created for the
Austrian heir-to-thethrone, the Hapsburg
Archduke Rudolph. He climbed Osoršćica in
1887. Osoršćica is intersected by numerous
cycling and hiking trails. It is also full of
caves. The best-known is the cave of St
Gaudentius, which lies on the eastern side
below the peak. It is only 3 m long. Farther
west, below the peak of Televrin, within a
range of big cliffs, is the Big Cave. This cave,
which was inhabited by prehistoric man, is
23 m long.
You can refresh yourself in the mountain
hut, open to visitors daily in the summer
months, otherwise on weekends.

VELI LOŠINJ
Veli Lošinj is a small town, situated at the foot of the hill of St. John (Sv. Ivan) in a
small cove on the southeastern side of the island of Lošinj. It is interesting to mention that in
the beginning Veli Lošinj (or Velo Selo, meaning Big Village), used to be bigger than Mali Lošinj
(or Malo Selo, meaning Small Village), but Mali Lošinj grew in size due to its position and the
development of seafaring. Now the names of the two settlements denote the opposite of the
actual size of the inhabited areas.
Veli Lošinj was proclaimed the most beautiful spot on the Croatian Adriatic for 2008.

MALI LOŠINJ
Mali Lošinj lies in the biggest sheltered bay of the archipelago called
Augusta. It is the biggest town on the Adriatic islands with a population of
almost 7,000. The original occupations of the settlers used to be connected
with cattle breeding and farming. At the end of the 19th century, when Mali
Lošinj developed into a seafaring town, it became the centre of the archipelago.
The traces of the maritime past and the influence of sea captains are still felt in
the town of Mali Lošinj and its surroundings.
The discovery of the therapeutic properties of the island climate and the development of tourism
as a new economic branch, marked the beginning of a new era in Mali Lošinj’s history.
The fact that you can find a secluded beach just a 15-minute-walk from the town centre makes
this town unique. The coves and small harbours, pebbly and rocky beaches, numerous footpaths
and promenades, comfortable accommodation facilities, excellent cuisine and friendly locals
provide enough reasons to spend your holiday on Lošinj!
Mali Lošinj is the winner of the Tourism Champion title for 2007, the Silver Flower of Europe
2009, and the International Award for Responsible Tourism 2010 (Premio Turismo Responsabile
Italiano 2010). The Tourist Board of Mali Lošinj is an associate member of the United Nations
World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Lošinj will host the 2010 World Underwater Fishing Championship. The championship will be
held 14-19 September 2010. and the spear-fishing will take place in designated zones around the
island of Lošinj.

GASTRONOMY
The natural wealth of the Cres and
Lošinj archipelago provides the basis for
the rich and healthy Mediterranean cuisine.
The main characteristics of this cuisine are
fish and seafood specialities, dishes based
on traditional island recipes, use of local
aromatic herbs, pot herbs and olive oil.
Smoked ham, sheep’s cheese, salted
anchovies, seafood salad are some of the
cold starters that you should try. For a hot
side dish you can have seafood risotto or
pasta, minestra or brodetto Dalmatian style.
Fresh sea fish, scampi and squid, prepared
in various ways, shellfish, roast lamb under
peka (earthen baking lid) are the island
specialities. Typical local salad is arugula and
radicchio. Dishes are seasoned with fresh
oregano, basil, sage, balm, thyme, rosemary
and laurel.
Do not leave out wine and home-made
brandy with aromatic herbs. We recommend
the local wines from the island of Susak.
All over the island there are restaurants,
taverns and other catering establishments,
where you can enjoy international dishes
and national specialities, as well as local
island specialities.

which include seeing the most interesting
cultural sights and visiting the most charming
places on the island - Osor, Cres, Lubenice,
Valun...
Valun is a picturesque fishing village.
There are organized hiking tours on the
island of Lošinj as well. You can enjoy a
pleasant walk along the sea-shore, through
the pine forests and shady groves, on
winding footpaths and hiking trails, as well
as through the picturesque island villages
with their well-preserved rural architecture,
characterized by narrow streets and squares.
The island definitely has to be seen from the
air as well. Take a panoramic flight to get

Osor, a museum in itself, is a 4000-year-old
town. It was the centre of the archipelago
in the Roman period. The numerous
archeological remains, the town walls, the
Museum of Church Art, the Archeological
Collection and the Cathedral evoke
memories of its glorious past.
Cres, the island Venice, is the biggest
town on the island of the same name. It is
characterized by the Venetian influence.
Lubenice, a prehistoric 4000-year-old
settlement, is situated on an imposing,
breathtakingly steep cliff.

You can get all the information on organized
trips at any of the local tourist agencies, hotels
and campsites, as well as on the excursion
boats, anchored in Mali Lošinj’s harbour.
Following on last year’s success which
marked the event "Fragrances and tastes
of Lošinj", the Tourism Office in cooperation
with the Fragrant Island Garden is continuing
with development of this project. The event
"Fragrances and Tastes of Lošinj” has spread
to the whole town, camps, hotels, tourist
agencies, restaurants.....The fragrance network
has expanded in all forms, from floral displays,
potpourri, liqueurs, juices, cakes, fragrant
decorations to gastro-menus where, in various
ways, autochthonous island plants are used.
Fragrance of months
This year the whole month will be dedicated
to the island's medicinal plants and pot herbs,
so January and February will be characterised
by lemons, oranges and tangerines, March
by rosemary, eucalyptus and laurel, April
is reserved for asparagus, Lošinj onion and
borage, May will be characterised by sage,
fennel and nettle, June by Spanish broom,
lavender, immortelle and ribwort plantain,
July bougainvillea, mint and bladder campion
and August figs, oleander and medlar. In
September, the fragrance program continues
with days of jujube, grapes, indian fig
opuntia and rock samphire. October will be
characterised by myrtle, strawberry-tree,
pomegranate and dandelion, November by
olives, dog rose and quince and December by
pine, agave and prickly juniper.
Why not find time for yourself on our fragrant
island! !
