WHAT A YEAR! - University of Arizona Hillel
WHAT A YEAR! Thank you for your support... From Mark Hanna & Michelle Blumenberg: We gratefully acknowledge all of you who have partnered with us in fulfilling our mission. Through your generous support, you have enabled us to help to create a pathway for our students as they explore their Jewish identities and continue on their Jewish journeys. Whether it is through sponsorship of programs, providing matching dollars for campaigns, purchasing ticket packages for our annual event, or donating to our special appeals, your contributions make a difference. Co-chairs Thomas Sayler-Brown and Jason Lazarow with “Barack Obama” On Saturday, February 27, Barack Obama, a shirtless Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton graced the Fox Tucson stage for the annual UA Hillel benefit. The Capitol Steps performed to a soldout audience and entertained with a hilarious and irreverent satirical program. Thanks to all who participated and to Alice and Paul Baker who treated us to a delicious post-show dessert reception. 2015-2016 Board of Directors Chair: Mark Hanna Vice Chair: John Judin Treasurer: Suzanne Baron Helming Secretary: Thomas Sayler-Brown Immediate Past Chair: Steve Caine MEMBERS Barbara Bereskin Marc Epstein Gavi Fine Brian Kanter Steve Kippur Nancy Koff Jason Lazarow Dana Narter Alyssa Silva Professional Staff Michelle Blumenberg, Executive Director Deborah Jassem, Development Director Amalia Mark, Director of Jewish Student Life Charae Stewart, Operations Manager Or Maoz, Jewish Agency Israel Fellow Elyse Pincus, IACT Coordinator Nancy Finkelstein, Bookkeeper For over 39 years, Hillel has awarded the Ben and Sally Smith Memorial College Youth Award to an outstanding young Jewish leader on campus. Hillel sponsors several programs throughout the year that aim to positively promote Israel and to help students understand the complexities of the Middle East. Students work closely with Or Maoz, our Jewish Agency Israel Fellow, to plan and implement these events. Elena Bendroff and Shaina Marco Birthright Israel In an effort to increase the number of students eligible for Birthright Israel and to enhance their experience, the Combined Jewish Philanthropies of Boston has generously funded a grant to support an IACT Coordinator, or Birthright Israel Coordinator at the UA. Elyse Pincus, ’12, has been working all year on engagement and outreach efforts via the trip experience. And the interaction does not stop once the student returns from Israel. Elyse works with each student post-trip to ensure that their experience was meaningful and fulfilling, and that it plays an important role in the continued Jewish journey of the student. This past winter, 37 students from the UA traveled to Israel under the auspices of Birthright Israel. Hillel played a pivotal role as the provider of these experiences. Although their stories differ, alumni often tell us how meaningful the experience was and how it enriched their lives. Many Birthright alumni return to campus and assume leadership roles at Hillel, which is a springboard for future leadership in the larger Jewish community. One such student is freshman Mira Nathan: “Being in Israel and celebrating Shabbat really made me realize how much I love Judaism, both as a religion and as a culture, and I wanted other people to be able to experience that as well. When I got back to Arizona, I knew I wanted to become more involved with Birthright so other Jewish students could learn more about their people, so I became a Birthright intern.” After being a Birthright Israel intern in the spring semester, Mira will be a Liebson Engagement Intern for the 2016-2017 school year. She will continue her work at Hillel, engaging new students and encouraging them to get involved in Israel and Jewish life. For the first time in many years, UA Hillel sent 39 students on Birthright Israel this summer with Elyse and our Israel Fellow Or Maoz. During both trips, we visit our Partnership2Gether community in Kiryat Malachi and Hof Ashkelon. There, our students learn about youth programs happening there and contribute to the Peace Wall in Nativ Ha’Asarah. Special during the summer, our group was already to spend time at both the Nahariya and Ashkelon beaches, and rafted down the Jordan River near Mitzpeh Gadot. For the first time, Taglit hosted a Tel Aviv day where 3000 participants explored the dance, music, food, and start-up companies in TA. Forming a Lasting Connection to ISRAEL Israelpalooza The Israel cultural festival was held on October 28. Every fall, students prepare a day-long celebration of Israel on the Mall of the University of Arizona campus. The entire campus community is invited to partake in Israeli foods, displays and games. Israel Independence Day 2016 On April 19, over 340 students gathered together in the Hillel parking lot to celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s 68th birthday. This year’s theme was a “White Night Tel Aviv” party, and included a live musical performance by two students. The parking lot had special fabrics and flags hanging to depict the atmosphere of the Israeli shuk. Additional activities included the very popular henna tattoo booth and the Israel photo booth. Students enjoyed a wide array of Israeli food from kabobs to Israeli burgers and potatoes. A special thanks to Sara Harelson and her family for sponsoring this year’s events. Yom Hazikaron On April 13, 60 students participated in the ceremony commemorating lost Israeli soldiers and victims of terror. Former IDF soldiers who are now studying at the UA shared their stories with fellow students, after which they all participated in a poignant tribute to those who have died. IDF veteran Dor Feingold lights candles in commemoration of Yom Hazikaron Never Let Us Forget….. 25th Annual Holocaust Vigil A large book is placed on a podium in the center stage of the UA Mall. At 10am, the first of 6 million names listed in the book is read. On Wednesday, March 30, through Thursday, March 31, the UA Hillel hosted the 25 th Annual Holocaust Vigil on the UA Mall. The 24-hour student-led program is dedicated to the remembrance of the Holocaust and its victims. The goal of this event is to increase knowledge of the Holocaust, to bear witness and to ensure that it will never happen again. Numerous displays were erected on the Mall depicting various aspects of the Holocaust. Students and community members participated in the reading of over 14,000 names of Holocaust victims of all ages. In addition, people also painted a ceramic butterfly, each commemorating the life of a child murdered during the Holocaust. As part of the Butterfly Project, Zikaron V’Tikvah - Remembrance and Hope - the butterflies will be added to the display in front of the Hillel building. In honor of Michael Epstein entering his senior year at the Eller College of Management, his parents, Bruce and Pamela, decided to make a meaningful contribution to Hillel. The Epstein family made their contribution through the UA Foundation, clearly designating Hillel as the recipient. By doing so, they were able to make a gift to the University, become a member of the President’s Club, and in addition join Hillel’s Leadership Circle. Michael, Bruce, Rebecca and Pam Epstein Philanthropy plays an important role in each of the members of the Epstein Family’s lives. It provides them the opportunity to show gratitude for all their blessings - family, health, and education. According to Bruce, “You should find something that you are passionate about and put your entire heart into it.” His children plan to continue this family tradition, whether it is charity, employment, or relationships. For the Epstein family, those causes are helping those less fortunate and protecting domestic animals. The Epstein Family Foundation has endowed scholarships at the UA Eller College of Management and Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, Rutgers University. They have also provided support to NYU from which Bruce and their daughter, Rebecca, received degrees. A Managing Partner and owner at RevHealth, a full-service healthcare marketing firm, Bruce has degrees in Pharmacy and an MBA from Rutgers and NYU, respectively. Says Bruce, “As a child, I wanted to be Darrin Stephens on Bewitched (an advertising account manager), but instead I became Larry Tate (the boss)!” Just last year, Bruce’s company began taking UA PharmD candidates as interns earning clinical education credits. For Our Students My name is Julian Wolff and I am a gay Jewish freshman at the University of Arizona. It has taken me almost my entire life to admit and accept my identity. Growing up, I struggled to accept my sexuality, and once I did, I struggled to find a balance between my Jewish and gay identities. In my mind, being gay and Jewish was entirely impossible. For years, I rejected any form of Judaism, since I believed that there was no space for me in a Jewish community. Upon my arrival to the UA, my family suggested that I visit Hillel, which I staunchly opposed. I had already decided that Hillel would not welcome me, simply for being me. Thankfully I was entirely wrong. From the moment I stepped foot into Hillel I have been welcomed, loved, and accepted. Hillel has been the guiding force in helping me rediscover my Jewish identity as young gay man. The climax to my journey of self- realization came in March of this year, when Amalia Mark, our Director of Jewish Student Life, emailed me a link with the subject: “Would you be interested?” I clicked the link, unsure of what she had sent me and in bright rainbow letters I read, “EAT. PRAY. GAY. A Transformative Shabbaton for Jewish, LGBTQ Students.” After reading that one line, I was determined to fly to Washington D.C. and attend this program that I knew would change me. On the morning of my 19th birthday, I boarded a plane to D.C. to have the most meaningful weekend of my life. EAT. PRAY. GAY was more than just a conference to me. It was the first time I had been in an exclusively queer Jewish space. I suddenly had 30 new friends whose identities were all similar to mine and who had struggled to find their place in the Jewish community. Over the course of the weekend, I heard from incredible guest speakers and learned so much about my intersecting identities. I am so grateful to the UA Hillel and everyone who made this incredible trip possible. This Year at Hillel! On April 22, more than 120 students took part in the first night Seder at Hillel. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, students can avail themselves of a variety of student-led programs and services throughout the year with no charge to them. Sophomore Amberlee Wilson and Senior Jodi Freidman Lead Hillel’s Seder A brief snap shot of some of our programs and the numbers of students who participated is listed below: *Taco Tuesday, held on August 25, was just one of several events that were part of Welcome Week. 142 Jewish Wildcats enjoyed becoming acquainted or re-acquainted while enjoying a southwest spread. *On September 13, more than 160 students attended Erev Rosh Hashana services with 130 of them enjoying dinner afterwards. 135 students attended Erev Yom Kippur services. *At Chanukah Casino Night, presented by Hillel, Chabad and Jewish Arizonans on Campus, more than 100 students enjoyed donuts and latkes while gambling with gelt. *Israel Fellow Or Maoz led classes in Krav Maga for students interested in learning this form of self-defense. *Throughout the year, Hillel hosted 16 student-led Shabbat services followed by dinner. Welcome Back Shabbat, Fancy Shabbat, Pride Shabbat, Interfaith Shabbat and Get Involved Shabbat were just a few that some 800 attended. Hillel provides opportunities for Jewish students to hang out, get involved, and celebrate. Thank you for supporting our future - our future Jewish leaders. Next Year at Hillel 100 Years of Celebration Question: Do you know how many years Hillel has been on the U of A Campus? Question: Do you know how many years Michelle has been Executive Director of Hillel? (Hint- the combined total adds up to 100) And that gives us something to celebrate! Beginning July 1, 2016, and through June 30, 2017, the UA Hillel will be commemorating 100 Years of Service provided to our Jewish student community on campus. We will be celebrating this 100 year milestone throughout the academic year with programs and opportunities for all to become involved. We hope you will join us! Save the Date: Our annual fundraising event will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017. Co-chairs Deanna Evenchik and Thomas Sayler-Brown have decided to switch things up a bit this year in honor of this momentous celebration. Stay tuned for details, but please, mark your calendars now! We will also be introducing The Hillel Fund for the Future campaign, chaired by Gary Kippur, that will raise funds for future student programming. Thank You to Our Friends The following people contributed to the University of Arizona Hillel Foundation during the 2015-2016 year. Our programs and outreach activities are possible as a result of their generosity. This list is current as of May 25, 2016. Please accept our sincere apology if your name was inadvertently omitted or listed incorrectly. Please contact us at your convenience so that we can make the necessary changes. 2015-2016 LEADERSHIP CIRCLE Alice and Paul Baker Sara and Tom Borin Diamond Family Foundation Epstein Family Foundation Deanna Evenchik Donna and Jeff Goldberg Paulette and Joseph Gootter Lynda and Mark Hanna Sara Harelson and Bernard Briskin Deborah and John Judin Tandy and Gary Kippur Sue Yaffe Kurn and Neal Kurn The Margolis Foundation Sandra and Robert Maxfield Bettina and Ken Plevan Shelley Pozez and Bill Holmes Thomas Sayler-Brown and John Linder Marsha and Gary Tankenoff Enid and Mel Zuckerman 1st Rate 2nd Hand Barbara and Donald Abrams Sharon and Allan Abrams Florence Adamson Carol and Norman Albert Rebecca and Matt Aldrich Mireille Algazi Don Altman Alice Ammerman and Thomas Keyserling Anonymous (2) Samuel Appel John Aronsohn Ruth and Mort Aronoff Sarah and Jeff Artzi Wendy Asarch Jane and Bruce Ash Carolee and Dan Asia Keith Aspinall Barbara Atwood and Peter Eisner Edward Rutherford Avra Valley R/C/ Club Pamela and Larry Baer Sandra Baers Barry Baker Debbie Baker Dawn* and Don Baker* Maxine and Dennis Baker Marta and Richard Balash Jennifer and Hillel Baldwin Heather Barasch Martha Baron Suzanne Baron Helming and Bruce Helming Susan and Ronald Barris Iris and Adam Bashein Deborah and Adam Bauer Sue Bauer Linda and Scott Beach Deborah Beck Betty Becker Geraldine Beckmann Sarah and David Beckmann Sherry and Richard Belkin Daniel Bell Jon Ben-Asher Dina and Eli Benita Benjamin's Plumbing Ailene Bereskin Barbara and Robert Bereskin Seth Berkowitz Elizabeth Bernstein and John MacKinnon Iris Bernstein and David Karp Karen and Mike Bernstein Miriam Berry-Seagle and Peter Seagle Robert Besquin Edna and Matthew Blank Kathryn and Casey Blitt Ellen and Allen Bloom Sue and Ned Bloomfield Liliane Blumenberg Michelle Blumenberg Kristen Bozza and Larry Gellman Sonia Bracamonte Ken Brandis Adam Brauer Sue Brauer The Breuer Family Judy and Bernard Briskin Michell and Bennett Brown Michele and Andrew Burger Katherine and Mary Byrnes Heather and Steve Caine Wendy and David Canterman Maureen and Paul Casamassimo CDG Architects Mark Chaney Amy Charles and Steven McMillan Peggy and Gary Chiate Leslie and Doug Clark David Coffman Lee Cohen Leslie and Michael Cohen Lucille Cohen Robin Pitler Cohen Ronald Cohen Sandra and Theodore Cohen Sandy Cohen Sandy and Robert Cohen Rita and Hillel Cohn Randie and Shelby Collier Gabriel Collins Congregation Or Chadash Eric Cordova Christine and J.
