The two teams feature a lot of faces from the suspended Chennai Super Kings and at least six players, who played in the same side till last year, will now be in opposite camps. Close friends and CSK teammates Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Suresh Raina will now be devising strategies as rival captains. Both have admitted that playing in a jersey other than ‘yellow’ has been very emotional but have promised to give their all for their new teams. The Dhoni-led Pune Supergiants were very convincing and dominant when they handed defending champions Mumbai Indians a nine-wicket drubbing. The Lions though needed a proper team effort in taming Kings XI Punjab, who batted well but were pretty ordinary when they bowled. Meanwhile, DNA testing procedures to identify bodies of 13 persons charred beyond recognition in the Puttingal Devi temple tragedy at Kollam will be carried out at the Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Bio Technology (RGCB). The testing procedures has started. Samples will start arriving this afternoon, Institute Director, Prof M Radhakrishna Pillai said. ‘We will also have to have the DNA fingerprinting of immediate relatives to do a comparison. We are hoping to do the results in five to seven days’. Meanwhile, TMC rebels Peter Alphonse, Viswanathan, Ramadoss and other leaders, along with their supporters, joined the Congress today in the presence of seniors leaders Mukul Wasnik, P Chidambaram Amit Shah in Trichy q Holds talks with TN leaders q To introduce BJP candidates for Assembly polls NT Bureau Trichy, Apr 13: BJP national president Amit Shah will be addressing a mega rally at Military Grounds here later this evening to kick off their political campaign for 16 May Assembly polls in Tamilnadu. He reached the State this morning and held talks with the party’s local leaders. Of the total 234 constituencies, BJP has allotted 45 to its ally Indiya Jananayaga Katchi, 24 to Akila Indiya Makkal Kalvi Munnetra Kazhagam, two to Kongunaadu Jananayaga Katchi and one to Muslim Munnetra Kazhagam. The party is set to contest in the rest of the constituencies and it has already announced candidates for 84 seats. Amit Shah reached Trichy by a special flight from New Delhi this afternoon and held discussions with local leaders on the preparations for the elections. He will introduce all 84 candidates at the meeting. Security has been tightened for Amit Shah’s visit to the State. Strict vigil is being maintained and police personnel have been deployed in large numbers. Vehicles entering the city are thoroughly checked. Meanwhile, BJP leaders flagged off 50 propaganda vans to cover all 234 constituencies in the State yesterday. These vans are fitted with LED screens. State BJP leader and Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, after flagging off the vans together with his party colleagues, said, ‘It will reach the masses with welfare measures initiated by the Central government led by Modi’. BJP state unit chief Tamilisai Soundararajan said the party’s propaganda would drive home the need for good governance in Tamilnadu. Jaya’s mega rally in Dharmapuri AIADMK general secretary and Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa was set to address a grand rally in Dharmapuri today. After Chennai on Saturday and Cuddalore on Monday, this will be the third campaign meeting of Jayalalithaa for this elections. and Elangovan. With and metropolitan cities in the country has revealed interesting findings on consumer insights pertaining to their perception of homoeopathy. According to the findings of the report released to the media on World Homoeopathy Day observed on 10 April, homoeopathy being the safest form of medicine is the reason behind the sudden shift. Moreover, 77 per cent of people believe that homoeopathy is the best form of treatment in terms of long term benefits, the report claims. Information available with News Today says that a computer-based programme interview among a total of 1,228 online panel respondents was conducted in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Bengaluru, NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 13: In a big relief for Nadigar Sangam, the Madras High Court today dismissed a petition seeking to stop the association from holding star cricket match at MA Chidambaram Stadium here on 17 April. A petition was filed by an advocate Tamilvendan in this regard. He sought the court not to allow Nadigar Sangam hold cricket matches in Chennai on the day. He contended that with elections round-the-corner, it would be difficult to deploy police in large numbers at the venue and such a big gathering would result in political parties bribing voters. The petition came up for hearing before Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice M M Sundaresh today. After hearing the arguments, the Judges said, ‘It is a petition filed with a motive to gain publicity. Considering the merits of the case, we urge the petitioner to withdraw the plea and dismiss the same’. 17 April will see members of Nadigar Sangam play cricket match to generate funds for constructing their building at the Nadigar Sangam premises. A total of eight teams with six players in each side will take the field. The event would be inaugurated by actor Rajinikanth. News Today wishes its readers, advertisers and well-wishers a happy Tamil New Year. The office of News Today will remain closed tomorrow and there will be no edition of the paper dated 14 April, 2016. Mullaiperiyar: TN withdraws plea in SC New Delhi, Apr 13 (PTI): Tamilnadu government today withdrew its interim plea seeking deployment of CISF to protect Mullaiperiyar dam in Kerala after the Supreme Court objected to filing of such pleas in an already decided case. ‘Once the decree is passed, you cannot file interim applications in it. You seek execution of the decree and you may seek review of the verdict if you want any modification,’ a three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur said. Senior advocate Rakesh Dwivedi, appearing for Tamilnadu, then said the State will file a review petition in the matter. The State government, in its plea, had sought a direction that the dam be secured by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), as Kerala does not facilitate the management of the dam by Tamilnadu employees. Tamilnadu government had in February last year moved the apex court seeking CISF security for the dam, which is currently handled by the Kerala government. In its 7 May, 2014 verdict, the Supreme Court had held that the 120-yearold Mullaperiyar dam is safe and allowed the Tamilnadu government to raise the water level to 142 feet and ultimately to 152 feet after completion of strengthening measures on the dam. In a setback to Kerala government which had been fighting a decade-old legal battle with the neighbouring state, a five-judge Constitution Bench had struck down a law promulgated by it declaring Mullaperiyar dam as endangered and fixing the water level at 136 feet. More people in Chennai opt for homoeopathy: Study NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 13: A recent study has claimed that 59 per cent of people in top cities of the country, including Chennai, have shifted from allopathy to homoeopathy in the past one year. The study conducted by Indian Market Research Bureau (IMRB) on ‘Acceptance of Homoeopathy in India’ across cosmopolitan the coming of Peter, women and youth voters would be attracted.’ He added, ‘We would fight for making Rahul Gandhi the next Prime Minister. I request our cadres to start working from today to make DMK form the government in Tamilnadu.’ Peter Alphonse said, ‘This is a political ‘Ghar Wapsi’. We have course corrected the mistake we had committed. By birth I am a Congressman.’ Besides he read out the list of all TMC cadres switching to the Congress. Meanwhile, TMC president G K Vasan today said his party remains strong and no one can create a divide in his alliance with DMDK-PWF. Khushbu from R K Nagar The latest buzz in political circles is that the Congress is planning to field its spokesperson and popular actress Khushbu from R K Nagar in the city, from where Chief Minister and AIADMK general secretary J Jayalalithaa is contesting. Even as there are unconfirmed reports that senior Congress leader Mukul Wasnik, who is in the city today, would seek the seat from DMK during his meeting with Karunanidhi, DMK spokesperson T K S Elangovan did not reply when reporters asked him about this. HC’s nod for star cricket Ahmedabad, Pune and Hyderabad by IMRB International for a private clinic. The report states that a majority of people used homepathy to treat ailments like hair loss, dandruff, allergies, back ache and joint pain. The report further suggests that in the last one year, an average person spent Rs 9,108 on homoeopathy and Rs 12,907 on allopathy. The study also highlights that over 60 per cent people believe that homoeopathy works best in chronic and lifestyle related diseases as they don’t find complete relief from allopathy. Another reason for the shift, cites the report, is the people looking for holistic healthcare options and the strong feeling that homeopathic treatment is safer than allopathy. ADVT 2 WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL 2016 CHENNAI CONSTITUTENCY ROUND-UP THIRU VI KA NAGAR T EC Will crack whip on freebies? R RANGARAJ Chennai, Apr 13: The Election Commission of India should come down hard on political parties offering freebies/subsidies/ gifts on the eve of elections, in the garb of election manifesto, as such offers of gifts amount to an attempt to bribe the voters. Come election time, and parties compete with one another to make preposterous offers of TVs, mobile phones, laptops, mixies and grinders, which are nothing short of a solicitation/inducement or a bribe to influence voters. While the Election Commission claims it cracks down on gifts during the election campaign, should it not view the offer of gifts post-election as an undue influence on the voter? It is immaterial if the gift is made before or after the election since the freebies are clearly poll-related. If the Election Commission believes that the present rules are vague and do not permit action on the above lines, it is high time the ECI goes in for more specific terms in the Code of Conduct prohibiting offers, gifts and freebies of any kind by political parties in the Election Manifesto or even otherwise. After all, it is not the party that spends the money on the gifts or the freebies. The payout is from Government coffers, the taxpayers’ money which belongs to the Government treasury and not to anypolitical party. The Election manifestoes raise fundamental issues of propriety. While in the last few years, parties on assumption of power have tried to implement the gift schemes, the track record relating to other promises relating to better governance, taking up and completion of physical projects, schemes for agriculture, industry and infrastructure, is poor and tardy. Public attention from implementation of manifesto is diverted to the freebies, and media memory, like that of the public, too is short. Sometimes, even shorter. Implementation of projects, if delayed, lead to revised estimates and cost overruns which ultimately are SYMBOLIC GESTURE AIADMK cadre displaying party symbol bearing images of MGR and Jayalalithaa at party headquarters in Lloyds Road, Chennai. CENTRE OF ATTRACTION Big banners are erected on buildings as part of voter awareness campaign by the Election Commission. A scene near Central Bus Stand in Tiruchi. borne by the voter or the tax-payer. Who is made accountable for this delay? Promises, based on populism aimed at influencing voters prior to the elections, must be seen as inducements/ solicitation/gifts and prohibited by the Election Commission. The DMK, ahead of the 1967 elections, came out with the promise of Roopaaykku Moonu Padi (Three Measures of Rice for One Rupee). At a time when the State faced huge shortage of rice, forcing long queues in front of ration shops, this inducement was a tilting factor for the DMK electoral strategy. The scheme couldn’t take off as the DMK government struggled to find a way of implementing it. After dithering for a few months, the DMK came out with an experimental plan for a couple of districts and was finally dumped, giving way to a new slogan, Moonu Padi Latchiyam, Oru Padi Nitchayam (Three Measures of Rice is promised; One Measure of Rice is assured). If the Election Commission believes that the present rules are vague and do not permit action on the above lines, it is high time the ECI goes in for more specific terms in the Code of Conduct Thus, an election promise was diluted after coming to power. The gift was replaced by a gift of the gab. Nearly 40 years later, after having been in government for a good part of this period, -- in 2006, the DMK came out with an election-eve offer on rice subsidy if voted to power! Same is the case of the DMK and AIADMK making promises on total prohibition though their governments have been in power from 1967! The Congress and BJP, not to be left behind, will make tall promises though they have been in power at the Centre and in many States. The DMK has now made a fresh offer of a Smartphone. Obviously, the thinking is that the voters are anything but smart! The DMK manifesto will perhaps force the AIADMK to go in for one-upmanship and emerge with its own offer of freebies. In that sense, the AIADMK cannot be blamed for what the DMK ushers in. In 2011 too, the AIADMK promise on gifts was a counter to the DMK offer. The parties have almost run out of a wish-out for household appliances. After writing off agricultural loans and educational loans, parties will probably write off loans taken from money-lenders. The voters will probably be rendered debt-free though the State Government debts could go up beyond Rs 3 lakh crore! Between ‘Makkal’ and DMDK NT Bureau Chennai, April 12: Tuesday was a day of developments in DMDK and its breakaway group Makkal DMDK. On a day when Vijayakanth continued its campaign tour and came down heavily on the opponents, the Madras High Court adjourned the hearing on the anticipatory bail petition filed by his wife Premalatha. Meanwhile, Makkal DMDK was allotted three constituencies by the DMK and the ‘new outfit’ vowed to work for the victory of the Karunanidhi-led alliance. ‘We have been given three constituencies by the DMK. We thank DMK chief Karunanidhi and party treasurer MK Stalin,’ Makkal DMDK leader V C Chandrakumar told reporters here after inking the deal with Karunanidhi at DMK headquarters, Anna Arivalayam. ‘DMK has given us political recognition,... We have been given Erode (East), Mettur and Gummidipoondi seats,’ he said. Chandrakumar, sitting MLA of Erode East, will seek re-election from the same constituency. Likewise, other Makkal DMDK leaders Parthiban and Sekar will contest from Mettur and Gumidipoondi respectively, he said. Stating that it would be difficult to popularise a new symbol among the people, he said,’we have told the DMK leadership that we would like to contest on its symbol of rising sun and they have assured us that they would give us that opportunity.’ He said Makakl DMDK will strive for the victory of DMK alliance. Makkal DMDK leaders led by Chandrakumar revolted against their party leadership to align with PWF as they wanted it to go with DMK front. Following their expulsion from DMDK, they floated Makkal DMDK and joined hands with DMK. PREMALATHA PETITION Apprehending arrest in connection with registration of a criminal case against her by Tiruppur police, she moved the court seeking anticipatory bail on Tuesday. The case was registered under various IPC sections including 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot) on a complaint from state minister A S M Anandan alleging that Premalatha VK Nagar or Thiru Vi Ka Nagar is named after Tamil scholar V Kalyanasundaram. It is a newly formed Assembly constituency after delimitation. It comes under Chennai North Lok Sabha constituency. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar has a dominant slum population and the recent real estate development is because of infrastructure projects. The locality has many challenges in store for the MLA who is to be elected in the upcoming elections, as there are many civic demands to be addressed. The zone covers wards 64 to78 including Periyar Nagar, SRP Colony, Peravallur, Jawahar Nagar, Agar- am, Ram Nagar Ramana Nagar, Teed’s Garden, Huzur Garden, Kennedy Square, Jaibhim Nagar, Maduma Nagar, State Bank Colony and Vellayan Market. A major issue here is frequent inundation during monsoon. Construction of stormwater drains and waterwa y s i s a long pending demand. In political terms, this constituency went to polls for the first time in 2011, when V Neelakandan of AIADMK took on Dr C Natesan of INC. Neelakandan managed to garner 72,887 votes to win, while Natesan got 43,646 and lost at a margin of 29,341 votes (23.70 per cent). Tamil scholars feel that there is an apparent lack of interest in celebrating the day and dipping enthusiasm. However, retired teacher and secretary of IOB Colony Residents Welfare Meenakshi Sundaram said Tamil new year day was decided some 5,000 years ago. This is scientific and rational, he said. In this regard, he pointed out that Tamilnadu was an advanced State much before the modern day developments. ‘Pataliputra in the North and Nagaresu Kanchi were known to be the most knowledgeable places in medieval India,’ he claimed. Explaining as to how the day was decided to be the Tamil new year, Meenakshi Sundaram said it was based on solar movements. ‘Even before modern science came l DO YOU KNOW? l l DURMUKHI ‘Even before modern science came into existence our ancestors had calculated the movement of the nine planets, Sun, 27 stars and zodiac based on which all the predictions were made. All these are scientific and very calculated precisely.’ into existence our ancestors had calculated the movement of the nine planets, Sun, 27 stars and zodiac based on which all the predictions were made. All these are scientific and very calculated precisely.’ Meenakshi said it was during the month of There are several references in early Tamil literature to the new year. Nakkirar, Sangam period author, wrote in the third century that the sun travels from Mesha / Chithirai through 11 successive signs of the zodiac. The Tholkaapiyam is the oldest surviving Tamil grammar text that divides the year into six seasons where Chithirai marks the start of the Ilavenil season or summer. The eighth century Silappadikaaram mentions the 12 Raasis or zodiac signs starting with Mesha/Chithirai. The Manimekalai alludes to the Hindu solar calendar as we know it today. Sri Lankan Tamils observe the traditional new year in April with the first financial transaction known as the ‘Kai-vishesham’ where elders gift money to the unmarried young, particularly children as a token of good luck. l l l ‘Chithirai’ that the Sun enters into the first raasi ‘Mesham’ and that is why the day was chosen as ‘Tamil New Year’. ‘It is always good to start the new year with the blessings of God and elders and hence we dedicate all good things to the nature.’ he said. Talking about the celebrations in recent times, the retired teacher said that there are more people coming to the temple these days than previously. There is a feeling that people are not talking much in Tamil, but I don’t agree. Language is beyond religion and everyone celebrates the day in the same manner,’ he added. The name of this year is Durmukhi and it is expected to bring lot of fortunes, he said. —NT Bureau Saying it with lamps Sri Narayana Kaingaraya Sabha is organising lakshadeepam on 14 April at 6.15 pm. (Supplement contd... on page 8) ADVT ADVT Blend 4 WEDNESDAY 13 APRIL 2016 WHAT NEWS TODAY PRINTS IS NEWS THAT COUNTS Right Treatment A prolonged tug of war between the ‘admission industry’ and the Medical Council of India impeded a fair and just admission process to medical courses for long, hurting aspirations of millions of deserving youth. An overwhelming number of aspirants with limited availability of seats apart, lack of standard procedures allowed private medical colleges to charge capitation fee, reserve seats for management and NRI quotas and literally ‘fix’ the examination based on the monetary worth of the candidate. All this will be undone by the recall of the controversial judgment of the apex court in 2013 that had scrapped the single common entrance test (NEET) for admission to the MBBS, BDS, and PG courses in all medical colleges. The decision will hurt the ‘admission industry’ worth billions of rupees, grown in total disregard to the medical ethics. This, in turn, may result in the closing down of a few private medical colleges. Growth in the number of government medical colleges has remained insignificant and the private sector’s prime motive --- ‘profitability’ --- compromised quality at many levels. In 2012, the MCI had announced the necessity for NEET, for admission to all undergraduate and postgraduate courses in all government and private medical colleges. A powerful lobby from the southern and western states and 115 private medical colleges made a plea against the decision, as NEET would hurt their ‘admission procedures’. The Supreme Court, on 13 December, 2012, inexplicably allowed them to conduct their own entrance exams. A centrally conducted entrance test should ensure standard competence levels. The MCI should now move ahead and introduce an aptitude test on the lines of the JEE to eliminate coaching institutes. The previous verdict and its recall also reflect lack of a sound, informed debate on serious issues that affect not only quality of medical professionals but also hamper aspirations of worthy candidates. A centrally controlled common exit test for medical professionals will not be out of place in ensuring credibility for PG courses; the time is ripe for its introduction. CHENNAI US received 236K H-1B applications Completes lottery Premium processing before 16 May Washington: The US received over 2,36,000 H-1B petitions in just five days of opening up the process early this month for the most sought-after work visa for IT professionals, including from India, and has completed the computerised draw of lots. This is more than thrice the Congressionally-mandated cap of 65,000 in the general category for the work visas for highly-skilled workers in the general category for Financial Year 2017. The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) yesterday announced it also received more than the limit of 20,000 H-1B petitions by those foreign students who completed their higher studies from a US academic institute in subjects if science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). USCIS received over 2,36,000 H-1B petitions during the filing period, which began 1 April, including petitions filed for the advanced degree exemption, a media statement said. It said it has completed the com- puterised draw of lots that would determine the successful applicants. On 9 April, USCIS used a computergenerated random selection process, or lottery, to select enough petitions to meet the 65,000 general-category cap and the 20,000 cap under the advanced degree exemption, also known as the master’s cap. The agency conducted the selection process for the advanced degree exemption first. All unselected advanced degree petitions then became part of the random selection process for the 65,000 limit, it added. USCIS will reject and return all unselected petitions with their filing fees, unless the petition is found to be a duplicate filing, it said. As announced on 16 March this year, USCIS will begin premium processing for H-1B cap cases no later than 16 May. It would continue to accept and process petitions that are otherwise exempt from the cap. H-1B visa, popular among Indian techies, is used by American companies to employ foreign workers in USCIS used a computergenerated random selection process, or lottery, to select enough petitions to meet the 65,000 general-category cap and the 20,000 cap under the advanced degree exemption occupations that require highly specialised knowledge in fields such as science, engineering and computer programming. Will Smith @imWilISmith Blackberry to launch two Android phones LONDON: Blackberry will launch two midrange Android handsets this year, chief executive John Chen has said. One will have a physical keyboard, the other a full touch-screen. Blackberry has no plans to develop handsets for its own operating system, BB10, but will continue to issue updates for existing devices. Its sales fell by almost $200m in the three months to the end of February. Chen said its first Android device, the Priv, had been too expensive. ‘The fact that we came out with a high-end phone was probably not as wise as it should have been,’ he said. A lot of enterprise customers have said to us, ‘I want to buy your phone, but $700 [£491] is a little too steep for me. I’m more interested in a $400 device.’ Chen had previously blamed the company’s poor sales figures on delays in negotiations with mobile networks about its Priv handset. Last month, Facebook and its Whatsapp messaging service announced they were to stop supporting their Blackberry apps. Blackberry said it was ‘extremely disappointed’ by the decision. ‘If Blackberry is determined to remain in the hardware business, the decision to offer new devices with mid-range pricing is a sensible move,’ said analyst Ben Wood from CCS Insight. ‘We believe there is an opportunity with business users who don’t want the expense of giving iPhones to their employees and want a robust, affordable and secure Android smartphone tailored to business use.’ VOICE MAIL A wise choice Sir, Women in China’s big cities are choosing natural childbirth over cesareans, reversing a decades-long trend during the controversial one-child policy in which C-sections were favoured due to convenience and reduced risk. China’s C-section rate is the highest in the world, with cesarean sections used in 47 per cent of all births in 2013. The World Health Organisation’s recommended rate is less than 15 per cent. Limited to one child, especially in urban areas, women sought C-sections for their convenience and reduced risk to newborns, even though recovery times increased for mothers and surgery presented its own dangers. However, since the second-child policy started in January, women have been considering the risks associated with C-sections more carefully. Maintaining a balanced diet and not eating too much will prevent the baby from being overweight. Using some of the harshest rhetoric of the campaign to date, Cruz said his billionaire rival is a bad businessman who has been surrounded by sycophants his entire career. ‘Donald’s whole pitch is he’s a great businessman,’ Cruz said in a wide-ranging interview on the Glenn Beck radio show, adding that given how Trump runs his campaign, ‘it appears he can’t run a lemonade stand.’ The comments came as both campaigns work tirelessly behind the scenes to secure delegates who will back them at the Republican Party convention this summer in Cleveland. Syria peace talks resume as violence surges GENEVA: A second round of peace talks to end Syria`s five-year civil war are due to resume in Geneva, as a surge in violence in northern Aleppo province threatened a fragile truce. The United Nations-brokered talks are aimed at forming a transitional government followed by general elections to end a conflict that has killed more than 270,000 people and displaced half of the country`s population. The fate of President Bashar alAssad remains a stumbling block, and UN Syria envoy Staffan de Mistura has held meetings with Assad`s key allies Tehran and Moscow ahead of a sit-down with the main opposition High Negotiations Committee Wednesday and regime representatives later in the week. A surge in violence in the last few days has threatened a landmark ceasefire agreed in February -- which had largely held -- and piled more pressure on these talks, which follow two previous fruitless attempts to negotiate an end to the bloodshed. ‘Right now, there are signs that this (the ceasefire) is slipping and it is a much more delicate environment for de Mistura to convene political talks,’ US Ambassador to the UN Samantha Power told reporters in New York after a briefing by de Mistura on Tuesday. Power said Russia must put pres- sure on its Syrian ally to ‘get the regime back with the programme’, adding she was ‘very alarmed’ by Syria`s plans to launch a Russianbacked counter-offensive in Aleppo, the epicentre of the renewed fighting. Iran`s Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian also voiced concerns about the increase in fighting following de Mistura`s trip to Tehran, saying it was ‘disturbing and may interfere with the political process’. Another point of tension as the indirect talks resume, are parliamentary elections being held Wednesday in government-controlled areas of Syria. The UN does not recognise the vote, which has also been dismissed by Assad`s Syrian and foreign opponents as illegitimate. Brazil President lashes out at VP over impeachment effort RIO DE JANEIRO: Embattled Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff lashed out at the two men in line to succeed her if she is impeached, calling her vice president and the lower house speaker ‘heads of the conspiracy’ to remove her from office. Speaking to teachers and students yesterday at the presidential palace in Brasilia, Rousseff said Vice President Michel Temer and Chamber of Deputies Speaker Eduardo Cunha are jointly plotting her downfall. The remarks came on the heels of an allegedly accidental release on Monday of an address to the nation that Temer intended to deliver after a hypothetical congressional vote that would suspend Rousseff from office. In the 13-minute audio, which Temer said he unintentionally sent fallen,’ she said. ‘I don’t really know which one is the chief and which is his second-in-charge,’ Rousseff said, referring to Temer and Cunha, both members of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party, which pulled out of Rousseff’s governing coalition late last month. ‘One of them is the not-so invisible hand that’s leading this impeachment process, through perversion of power and unimagiDilma Rousseff nable abuses,’ she said. ‘The other to lawmakers through an instant is rubbing his hands together and is messenger app, the vice president rehearsing the farce of a would-be inauguration speech.’ speaks as if he had already asER On Twitter, the head K sumed the top job. Now, ‘chat bots’ in Facebook Messenger AI-powered software allows lifelike exchanges San Francisco, Apr 13: Facebook on Tuesday extended its reach beyond online socialising by building artificial-intelligence powered ‘bots’ into its Messenger application to allow businesses to have software engage in lifelike text exchanges. Bots are software infused with the ability to ‘learn’ from conversations, getting better at figuring out what people are telling them and how best to respond. The bots could help Facebook over time monetise its messaging applications and get a start on what some see as a new way of interacting with the digital world, potentially shortcutting mobile applications and sidestepping search. ‘Our goal with artificial intelligence is to build systems that are better than people at perception -- seeing, hearing, language and so on’, Zuckerberg said while laying out a long-term vision for Facebook. Artificial intelligence is already used in Messenger to recognise faces in pictures, suggesting recipients for messages and for filtering out spam texts. ‘Indians are online shopaholics’ Purchasing top priority for domestic internet users: Survey NT Bureau Chennai, Apr 13: Indians voted online shopping as the top reason to access internet, spending an average of about Rs 9,400 a month on e-purchases, followed by social networking, according to a survey. Rohit Sharma asserts Mumbai will bounce back Rohit Sharma Kolkata, Apr 13 (PTI): Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma asserted that his side would bounce back from the defeat in the IPL campaign opener and pick up steam as the tournament progresses as they know how to win the trophy and games. Mumbai Indians had a typical slow start to their title defence in season nine, going down to Pune Supergiants by nine wickets on 9 April but Rohit said his team has in it the wherewithal to come back stronger. It (the loss) was disappointing, the performance Ronaldo hat-trick fires Real Madrid into semis Madrid, Apr 13 (AFP): Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Real Madrid to a record sixth successive Champions League semi-final with a hat-trick as the Spanish giants overturned a 2-0 first leg deficit, beating Wolfsburg 3-0 on Tuesday. Ronaldo struck twice in just over a minute to bring Madrid level in the tie inside 17 minutes. Yet, the 10-time winners were forced to wait until 13 minutes from time to find the winner when Ronaldo’s dipping free-kick escaped the clutches of Diego Benaglio to find the bottom corner. Cristiano deserved a magic night, said Madrid captain Sergio Ramos. ‘We need him, he gives everything for the shirt. For a long time he has shown he is the number one and when he is on form you notice.’ Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane hailed his side’s collective effort, but Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates after scoring a goal. reserved special praise for Ronaldo who became the first player to score three hat-tricks in the competition in one season. He is showing what he is, which is the best player in the world, said the Frenchman. ‘Cristiano needs the whole team, I want to speak about the team because they achieved this together. But he is special because not everyone is capable of scoring three goals.’ Wolfsburg boss Dieter Hecking was left to rue his side’s inability to defend from set-pieces and lack of a killer away goal. ‘We should have defended better. To go to the next stage, we needed a goal,’ he said. ‘Two of the three goals were from dead balls and so that tells you that we didn’t defend right.’ we had is not something we would want. But things like this can happen. What has happened has happened and we don’t want to carry any baggage. We have gone back to the drawing board and decided what we can’t afford as a team. We have rectified our mistakes. Hopefully we have a better game here,’ Rohit said. ‘We are a team that knows what we to do to win the trophy and win games. This is professional unit and you don’t need to motivate the team. Everyone knows what is expected. You can’t get demotivated. You have to come back stronger. That is the only way going forward, he added. Rohit said every team needs some time some time to settle down and the first few weeks would be a challenge. The first few games are always challenging because as a group you are all trying to get together and play as a team which is difficult for every team, not just Mumbai Indians. That is a challenge for us as well. The first few weeks will be a big challenge, to get the right combination and field your best team, ‘ he said. Right from his decision to bat first, the team selection also came in for criticism as their batsmen put up a shoddy display to be restricted to 121/8 by Pune Supergiants. We play according to the condition and get right balance of the squad. Sometimes it will work and sometimes it may not. It is important that you identify that as early as possible in the tournament and make sure you have a settled squad going ahead. It is always important to give the guys a few games to prove themselves, said the righthanded opening batsman. On the poor starters tag of Mumbai Indians, he said, ‘People are there to comment but we want to concentrate on our processes. People will judge and talk because we are probably one of the popular teams in IPL history and we have proved that in our performances. ‘People have the right to talk about it but we don’t want to be slow starters. We want to win as many games as possible in the first half and see what happens afterwards. Narine is a class act: Hogg Sunil Narine Kolkata, Apr 13 (PTI): With Kolkata Knight Riders’ premier spinner Sunil Narine back in the squad, Brad Hogg’s place in the team may be uncertain but the Australian veteran said they share a lot of mutual respect in the Indian Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament. Man City enters last four Manchester, Apr 13 (AFP): Manchester City reached the Champions League semi-finals for the first time after Kevin De Bruyne’s fine 76th-minute goal earned them a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday. A week on from their 2-2 draw in the French capital, City saw Sergio Aguero squander a first-half penalty after he had been felled by PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp, but De Bruyne’s late strike settled the Etihad Stadium nerves and completed a 3-2 aggregate success. Fifteen points off the pace in the Premier League and widely consid- ered the tie’s underdogs, City advance with hope intact that manager Manuel Pellegrini may yet bow out with a Champions League winner’s medal around his neck before handing over to Pep Guardiola. Shane Watson It’s a very great achievement for the club, not only to be in the best four teams of Europe, but also in the style of play that we never change, said Pellegrini. ‘Kevin De Bruyne is an important player for us. We deserved a goal before he scored. We dominated the game from the beginning until the end.’ But it was a bitterly disappointing evening for PSG coach Laurent Blanc, who lost Thiago Motta to injury and has now seen his team eliminated in the quarter-finals four seasons in a row. Terming the West Indian off-spinner as a class act, Hogg said: ‘He (Narine) is sorely missed. It’s disappointing with what happened with him personally and with his action. He’s a class act, he’s got the skill. He’s sorely missed through that World Twenty20. It’s great to have him back. ‘As individuals, we want to be on par. But it’s a team. If I’m not playing and he takes my spot, I still have got to create the energy in the changing room and make sure everyone is up for the challenge. It doesn’t matter whether you’re playing or not, you still can play a part,’ he said. With his childlike enthusiasm, Hogg said he always keeps the dressing room alive. ‘I’m fairly energetic. If I’m quiet, upset and get stressed because I’m not playing, everyone else will feel that and will bring everyone down. I cannot afford to do that. It’s a team game and we all play a part. Pak hockey fraternity blames PHF for defeat Azlan Shah Cup: India routs Pakistan 5-1 Karachi, Apr 13 (PTI): Pakistan hockey community has blasted the national federation (PHF) after the greenshirts were routed 1-5 by arch-rivals India in the Azlan Shah Cup in Ipoh. This is what happens when the Pakistan Hockey Federation continues to appoint its favorites to key positions and ignores merit and the need of the hour, Olympian Samiullah told PTI. He said it was shameful to witness the way India drubbed Pakistan. No matter what we do in an international event but whenever we play India our players have always picked up their game and shown passion. But today India showed how quickly it was moving ahead in hockey,’ Samiullah said. Another Olympian Ayaz Mahmood blamed Pakistan’s poor showing in the Azlan Shah Cup to the circumstances that the national team went through before its departure for Malaysia. Just before the tournament, the manager and chief coach Hanif Khan left the training camp in protest over selection issues. Then the PHF again brought back Khawaja Junaid as chief coach when in the past he has failed to deliver, he said. Another former player Ahmed Alam added: ‘Our hockey is just not improving at all even after the federation was changed. It is clear we need to bring in a foreign coach and support staff now or we will be nowhere in a few months time.’ The PHF also came in for criticism recently when they turned down an invitation to send the national team to the Champions Trophy in London this summer. Former captain Hasan Sardar also rued the dismal state of Pakistan hockey. ‘Pakistan were already out of the Olympics and before that the World Cup. Now we are losing by such a big margin to India. A lot of brainstorming is required to set things right. The federation needs to reassess its priorities, he said.
