DVENTURE CAN HAPPEN ANYWHERE…The jagged, snow-capped peaks of the Alps, the painted rock
walls of a southwestern desert, the cobblestone streets of an ancient city, or even your own backyard. Wherever
your adventures lead, you need clothing and gear you can depend on to protect you from the elements.
Each piece of Sherpa Adventure Gear has been designed, developed or tested with input from our team of sponsored Sherpa guides. If it stands up to the rigors of living and climbing
in the Himalaya, you know it will stand up to your daily use and abuse.
However, our goal is to do more than just make high-quality clothing
and gear for all your outdoor pursuits.
The Sherpa heart in action
Although climbers pay tens of thousands of dollars to climb peaks like
Everest, Sherpa guides regularly risk their lives yet rarely make better
than poverty wages. When a Sherpa loses his or her life in the mountains their children suffer even more.
That is why we donate a percentage of all our sales to sponsoring
Sherpa athletes and supporting organizations like the Sherpa Education
Fund. And we always look for ways to employ local Sherpa people and
give back to the community we came from.
Each year we also find more ways to reduce our impact on the environment—from using eco-friendly fabrics to choosing green packaging options. Because we believe we are all children of this planet, and together
we can change the course of history for the better. Just like climbing
a mountain we need only work together, and take one small step at a
time, to reach our goal.

Do not choose Sherpa Adventure Gear just because you can depend on it. Or simply because you love the way it
looks, fits and functions. Instead, choose it because it because by doing so, you are also making a difference in the
lives of others.

SHERPA ADVENTURE GEAR ATHLETES
Lhakpa Rita
LHAKPA RITA SHERPA - One of the world’s most experienced climbers with 10 successful
Mt. Everest summits
Raised in Thame—the hometown of famed Everest climber Tenzing Norgay— Lhakpa Rita Sherpa is on track to be the first
Sherpa to successfully climb the “seven summits” (the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.) He has guided on numerous mountains worldwide and summited Everest 10 times, Cho-Oyu three times, Mt. Vinson (in the Antarctica), Denali,
Aconcagua and numerous peaks in the Cascades including Mounts Baker and Rainier.
Known as the “Best Sirdar in the Khumbu”, Lhakpa Rita is recognized by other mountain guides, Sirdars and climbers for
his unique expertise and experience, and is one of only a few Sherpas working as a full-time mountain guide around the
world. Lhakpa Rita guides primarily for Alpine Ascents and lives in Shoreline, Washington with his wife and children.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Lungta Hybrid Jacket
Nuri
NURI SHERPA - Professional Himalayan alpinist, with ascents of four 8,000 meter peaks
Born in 1970, Nuri Sherpa is a highly skilled climber with a wide range of mountaineering experience—he has already
climbed Everest from both sides, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Pumori, Dhaulagiri and a host of other high peaks in the Himalayas.
Nuri is a perfectionist, eminently dependable, and honest with his comments on our gear. Always ready to help, never flustered, Nuri Dai (big brother) has endeared himself to the Sherpa Adventure Gear team in Nepal. Living in Kathmandu with
his wife and two children, Nuri divides his time between leading expeditions for Climb High during the climbing season
and helping our research and development team during the off season. This year he is moving to Seattle to work with us in
our U.S.A. office.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Lobutse Jacket
Pasang
PASANG LHAMU SHERPA - Mountaineering and trekking instructor for the Nepal Mountain
Instructor Association
Born in Lukla, the starting point for most expeditions, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa has always been interested in climbing. However, she didn’t actually start climbing until 2003, after attending college in Kathmandu.
In four short years Pasang Lhamu has summited Everest from the Tibet side, Yala Peak, Nangpai Gusung and Island Peak.
She has also traveled to Italy and France to take mountaineering courses, and climbed numerous peaks there as well. Today,
in addition to working as an instructor and part time trekking guide, she is the primary care taker of her 14 year old sister.
Pasang Lhamu hopes to summit Everest from the south side this spring.
Favorite Sherpa Gear: Halka Jacket
Mingma
MINGMA TENZING SHERPA - Professional mountain and trekking guide
Mingma Tenzing Sherpa started working as an assistant guide to his father during holiday vacations when he was just 14
years old. After attending the Hillary school in Khumjung, he went on to high school and college in Kathmandu. Though,
Mingma has a degree in Physical Science, he has always wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. To date he has climbed
Lobutse, Island Peak and Mera Peak (6000 meter peaks). He has also traveled to Spain twice to work and learn the language.
Although Mingma Tenzing would like to climb higher peaks, his family doesn’t allow him to due to the risk. Married with
no children, he works as a guide for Climb High during the climbing season and in the Italian Research Center in Lobutse
during the off-season.

VEN WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE COLD, you can still quickly work up a sweat skiing, climbing or hiking. And sweat can kill. The solution to staying
dry and comfortable in any temperature is wearing layers you can pull on and off at will. When you need more than just a lightweight base layer to keep
you warm, but you don’t want too much bulk or insulation, these toasty yet breathable mid-weight pieces are the perfect addition to your layering system.
Jaaro Micro-Fleece Top
When you need a lightweight, highly-packable piece that offers
more warmth than your typical base layer, but isn’t as heavy as a
sweater, this micro fleece shirt fits the bill to a tee. Wear it alone on
chilly days, or layer it for maximum warmth in cold weather or at
high elevations.

Raajen II Primalo
HE FIRST DOWN PARKA was patented in the US in 1936. Then Jim Whittaker wore one to top of Everest in 1963 and they quickly became the standard
for mountain adventures. Many things have changed since then—fabrics are lighter and more durable. Synthetic insulation has come on the scene. But the
one thing that hasn’t changed is the need for a jacket that packs extreme warmth into a small package. Every piece of our insulated clothing has been tested
by Sherpas in the bone-chilling weather of the Himalaya. They trust their lives to it…So can you.
Hooded Jacket

When you plan to spend long hours in a bone-chilling mixture of cold, fog,

A
T AGE 90, GYALZEN SHERPA
IS THE ONLY SURVIVING
SHERPA from Sir Edmund Hillary
and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay’s historic first summit of Everest in 1953.
He is also Sherpa Adventure Gear
founder Tashi Sherpa’s uncle, and
the inspiration for our company.
taineering expeditions. Soon however, Tenzing promoted him to
local porter. This allowed him to carry loads up to the higher altitudes
and make additional pay. He was thrilled to also be given a complete
set of mountaineering gear including jacket, pants and climbing shoes
as part of his promotion. The shoes were what he treasured most
since they allowed him to proudly walk the slopes with ease. Much to
his dismay, all the gear was taken back by the team at the end of the
expedition.
When he was a child, Gyalzen did
not grow up thinking of climbing
the great peaks surrounding his
home. Life in a small Himalayan
mountain town was frugal at best.
And he spent his time herding yaks
and gathering firewood. “People
were very poor. There were few
houses. Most Sherpas from Kunde,
Khumjung, Pangboche, Thame,
everyone, worked as coolies
transporting loads for the few rich
traders that lived here. The expeditions changed that,” Gyalzen
recalls.
Gyalzen continued landing work as a porter, and in 1953, eager to
earn a bonus offered to Sherpas who climbed the highest, he twice
carried gear to Everest’s 26,200-foot South Col. He was also honored
by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation Medal for his part in
supporting the famed Hillary expedition.
Being the youngest in his family, he was expected to stay home and
take over the family business of yak herding and salt trading. But the
fancy clothes and wrist watches of Sherpas returning from expeditions attracted him to climbing. In 1952, he traveled to Darjeeling,
India—the center of mountaineering before Nepal’s borders opened in
the early fifties—in search of work as a porter that would pay all of 4
rupees a day (about 10 cents at the time).
Though he never reached the summit of Everest, after more than 12
years hauling loads for eight major expeditions, Gyalzen finally saved
enough money to retire from climbing. “Going on a mountain is like
going to war,” he recalls. “You don’t know whether you’ll come back
or not.”
After retiring, he quickly turned to a safer and more lucrative occupation … carrying Nepali paper, butter and silver 3 days across
the Nangpa Pass to trade in Tibet for rock salt, wool, and yaks. He
also devoted time to the Sherpa community and was chosen as the
Chorinba (community leader of the monastery), a role that he served
in for 35 years
Today Gyalzen lives a quiet life with his wife of 63 years, Pemba
Lhaki (age 93). Although he is widely regarded as the richest man
in Namche Bazaar, he spends his days in prayer, living in the same
house he grew up in. He is the last of the original Sherpa climbers.
When he got there, Gyalzen discovered that the Swiss expedition
with the soon-to-be-famous Tenzing Norgay at the helm had already
left for the mountain. Undaunted he ran until he caught up with the
expedition, and was thankfully offered a position collecting firewood
and carrying loads for the group.
A dependable, honest and hard worker, when the expedition ran
short of money and sugar, he was honored with the responsibility of
traveling to Kathmandu to pick up 18,000 rupees (a princely sum!)
and buy additional supplies. Since the money was in coins, he and
his companions had to carry it in three big, heavy tins the almost fifty
miles back to base camp.
On the way back he was waylaid by a severe storm in Thukla and
began to rethink the wisdom of his decision to work for the moun28

HEN CLIMBERS FIRST SUMMITED EVEREST, the clothing of choice was made from wool, gabardine and waxed cotton. Today you have a variety of

HARD SHELL - WOMEN’S

ROM THE BRUTAL COLD OF WINTER to the heavy rains of summer, Sherpa people live in some of the harshest weather in the world. And anyone
who lives, works or plays in the high mountains knows that nothing beats the 4-season, wind, rain and snow protection of a full-fledged hard shell. So
you don’t have to sacrifice either fit or function when you’re heading into the outdoors, we’ve taken the same, technical line of shells we make for men and
recreated them to fit a woman’s body beautifully.
Tridevi Modus 3 in 1 Jacket
Tridevi is the central Trinity of Hindu Goddesses Lakshmi, Parvati and
Saraswati. Making it the perfect name for this 3 in 1 jacket. Wear just the soft,

F YOU’RE SPENDING TIME IN THE KIND OF TEMPERATURES SHERPAS ENDURE day after day, you need more than a just a few layers and a shell to
keep you comfortable. So we asked the late, much-missed Pemba Doma Sherpa—one of two women ever to scale Everest from both faces—to help us design
a line of insulated jackets that would keep anyone warm at high elevations. This is the result.

When you don’t need a full-on parka—or even a down
sweater—but you do need a bit of insulation for those chilly
mountain mornings, this jacket is ideal. Warm even when
wet, you’ll take the cozy Vajra everywhere thanks to its small
packed size.

HERPA ADVENTURE GEAR WAS INSPIRED BY SHEER chance in 2003.
Back then, my family and I owned an import clothing business. While
walking down the streets of Manhattan, a magazine issue commemorating the 50th anniversary of the first ascent of Everest caught my eye. I was
amazed to discover that my Uncle, Ang Gyalzen Sherpa, was on Sir Edmund
Hillary’s celebrated expedition back in 1953.
Today, few climbers attempt the treacherous peaks of the Himalayas without
Sherpas to make the route, carry the load and lay the rope to top and back.
Although foreigners pay tens of thousands of dollars just to secure a permit
to climb, these amazing, high altitude mountaineers risk their lives for a pittance. And they rarely receive any of the fame, fortune or recognition that follows a successful summit.
become well known, and there are Sherpa families in Nepal that will smile
every year thanks to our support.
As time goes on, more Sherpa athletes are being invited into the fold to test
and endorse our growing line of products. And we continue to expand our
business in Nepal and employ local Sherpas whenever possible. But at the
core we will always be a small company with a simple vision of doing business in the inimitable way of the Sherpas…One step at a time, helping each
other on the climb up, and never losing sight of the destination.

Namaste,
The Sherpa Adventure Gear Team in Kathmandu, Nepal, November, 2007
Sherpa Adventure Gear was created as
a means for sharing the Sherpa story
with the world at large, and supporting these unsung heroes. We do this in
part by setting aside up to $.50 from
every product sold. Then we use this
money to support non-profits in Nepal, and to sponsor Sherpa athletes—
giving them greater recognition and
income. Each Sherpa Brand ambassador is also paid a royalty based on
sales. In return they test our products
and help with design.
