HY DO WE SEEK ADVENTURE? WHETHER CLIMBING MOUNTAINS, SUMMITING PEAKS, HIKING
TRAILS, or trekking to far-away towns, we usually do it for one of a few reasons…
To feel alive…To challenge ourselves…To explore the world…To find out what we’re made of…Or simply because it’s
out there, and we can.
Yet when Sherpas climb, they usually do it for another reason—to survive. Impressively skilled at high-altitude climbing, Sherpas act as porters, caretakers, and guides on almost every Himalayan summit attempt. The money they earn
goes to support their families. In Nepal, many hungry mouths often depend on a single Sherpa.
Sherpa Adventure Gear was founded not just to bring you highly-technical, mountain-worthy gear, but also to bring
support and recognition to the indomitable Sherpa. We do this by donating a percentage of every sale to foundations
like the Sherpa Education Fund, sponsoring Sherpa athletes, buying hand-made products from Sherpa artisans, and
employing local Sherpas in our Nepal offices.
• Our donation to the Room to Read program helped fund the completion of a new, 8 room school building for
the Shree Subanshi Kanya Primary School in the small village of Tikalpur, Nepal.
• International climbing guide firm Alpine Ascents has contracted with us to outfit their Mount Rainier guides
for the 2008 climbing season—helping us gain visibility and spread the Sherpa story.
• We’ve started a private fund sponsoring the education of children from five economically challenged families
in our Nepal factory.
• We provide employee benefits unheard of in Nepal including free lunch for all of our 90 employees, and full
medical and accidental insurance.
• Our collaboration with a technical school in Kathmandu provides an internship program to promote local talent in design and merchandising.
• We’ve continued our commitment to reducing out impact on the environment with the addition of organic
cotton clothing in this season’s line, and by exploring ways to reduce our carbon footprint in the factory.

LHAKPA RITA SHERPA - One of the world’s most experienced climbers with 11 successful Mt. Everest summits
Raised in Thame—the hometown of famed Everest climber Tenzing Norgay— Lhakpa Rita Sherpa is on track to be the first Sherpa to successfully climb the
“seven summits” (the highest peaks on each of the seven continents.) He has guided on numerous mountains worldwide and summited Everest 11 times,
Cho Oyu three times, Mt. Vinson (in the Antarctica), Denali, Aconcagua and numerous peaks in the Cascades including Mounts Baker and Rainier.
Known as the “Best Sardar in the Khumbu”, Lhakpa Rita is recognized by other mountain guides, Sardars and climbers for his unique expertise and experience, and is one of only a few Sherpas working as a full-time mountain guide around the world. Lhakpa Rita guides primarily for Alpine Ascents and lives
in Shoreline, Washington with his wife and children.

PASANG LHAMU SHERPA - Mountaineering and trekking instructor for the Nepal Mountain Instructor Association
Born in Lukla, the starting point for most expeditions, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa has always been interested in climbing. However, she didn’t actually start
climbing until 2003, after attending college in Kathmandu.
In four short years Pasang Lhamu has summited Everest from the Tibet side, Yala Peak, Nangpai Gusung and Island Peak. She has also traveled to Italy and
France to take mountaineering courses, and climbed numerous peaks there as well. Today, in addition to working as an instructor and part time trekking
guide, she is the primary care taker of her 14 year old sister. Pasang Lhamu hopes to summit Everest from the south side this spring.

MINGMA TENZING SHERPA - Professional mountain and trekking guide
Mingma Tenzing Sherpa started working as an assistant guide to his father during holiday vacations when he was just 14 years old. After attending the Hillary school in Khumjung, he went on to high school and college in Kathmandu. Though, Mingma has a degree in Physical Science, he has always wanted to
follow in his father’s footsteps. To date he has climbed Lobutse, Island Peak and Mera Peak (6000 meter peaks). He has also traveled to Spain twice to work
and learn the language.
Although Mingma Tenzing would like to climb higher peaks, his family doesn’t allow him to due to the risk. Married with no children, he works as a guide
for Climb High during the climbing season and in the Italian Research Center in Lobutse during the off-season.

Nima, our youngest Gear Athlete, is an experienced high-altitude, long-distance marathon racer with 9 major races under her belt (including the Everest
Marathon (42 km from Base Camp to Namche) the Annapurna Mandala Trail (240 km), and The Ultimate Trail race from Kathmandu to Dolpa Himal (1000
km)). She regularly places in the top four with two 1st, four 2nd, one 4th and one 3rd place finish.

Nima has been interning in our Nepal office learning all the intricacies of our gear manufacturing. In a short span of six months she has completely captivated everyone here with her verve and energy, and has proven herself to be a fantastic asset for all of us. She still runs and trains for her next race everyday.

CHHEWANG NIMA SHERPA - Himalayan alpinist, with 16 ascents of Mt. Everest
Chhewang Nima first reached the summit of Everest as part of an American expedition in May of 1994. Since then, he has been to the summit 15 more times
via both the north and south faces while supporting a variety of expeditions. Chhewang has also summited four other peaks in Tibet and Nepal over 21,000
feet high: Cho Oyu, Shishapangma, Ama Dablam, and Nosing Khan. On top of his climbing accomplishments, Chhewang spent three years working in
Alaska as a yak trainer. Today he lives in Namche with his wife and two children, where he continues to work as a professional guide and Sherpa in the
Everest Region.

ACK IN THE FIFTIES, the Himalayan
Mountaineering Institute in Darjeeling
was the center of the Sherpa mountaineering universe. Here in the idyllic alpinelike surroundings of Birch Hill, sheltered
by green conifers, walked and trained the
elite of all the Sherpa heroes — Tigers of
the Snow as they were called.
The HMI was a special school set up
to train and teach the essential skills
of mountaineering . Legends like Ang
Tharkey, Tenzing Norgay and a host of Sherpa heroes worked
as instructors here. Amidst them, holding his own was Da
Namgyal a quiet and humble Sherpa.
Da Namgyal was born in 1919 in the village of Thamey. At the
age of 25, he did what most young Sherpas then did. He left
his village and travelled to Darjeeling to seek employment.
He went on expeditions to Nanda Devi in the Karakoram
Range, working side by side with Tenzing, and the Garwhal
Himalayas as a support Sherpa. It was during this expedition
that Raymond Lambert, the a famous Swiss mountaineer, hired
him on the historic and epic climb in 1952 to the South Col.
The gregarious Swiss were captivated by Da Namgyal’s unassuming and no-nonsense efficiency. This was where he made
his reputation as a climber of outstanding ability. Dependable
to the core, he established a close rapport with all his team
members, so that when it came time for that most famous of
expeditions, he was a natural choice for the British.
enough for him that his friend Tenzing was the one that enjoyed the ultimate success and the trappings that came with it.
In 1954, he was one of the six elite Sherpas to be sent to Rosen
Laui, Switzerland on a climbing course. Once again he was
there with his friends Ang Tharkey and Tenzing, probably regaling each other at the irony of having to retrain themselves as
climbers. Returning home to his wife and two sons, he joined
the HMI as a climbing instructor. In the years that followed, he
became very popular and gained a fair measure of fame as an
intrepid teacher to hundreds of cadres from the Indian Army
and the police force. He continued to travel all over India conducting climbing courses until he retired from mountaineering
at the age of 55.
After his retirement, he chose to never climb again, preferring
instead to spend the quiet years with his wife Pasang Phuti and
his two sons. Both his sons took to the same profession, his
elder son Pasang Namgyal working in the same institute for 30
years.
Da Namgyal passed away in 1984 at the age of 65. In the annals of Everest, not many will remember this diminutive and
gentle soul, but for those who were there in 1953, he was the
bravest of them all — the ultimate Sherpa.

No less a personage than Sir John Hunt praised this “strongest of the Sherpas” in his book “The Ascent of Everest”. He
and Da Namgyal formed a two man team to establish camp
at 27,395 feet, the highest that any Sherpa had been until then.
They pitched the way for Hillary and Tenzing and who knows
if not for a bit of luck, the world today would probably be honoring a different tandem — Hunt and Namgyal. Da Namgyal
never sought glory or fame and it is just as well because it was

Sherpa Adventure Gear takes great pride in the quality
of its products. Our goal is to make superior gear that
honors the legendary Sherpas who have built their reputation on being the toughest high altitude climbers in the
world. We have used their experience and input to make
products that are truly outstanding.
Our products are fully warranted against defects and
materials and workmanship. If, for any reason product
should fail in its function due to a manufacturing defect
we will repair or replace the product at our discretion. Damages caused by accident, negligence, normal
wear and tear or the natural deterioration of colors and
materials over an extended period are not covered by
this warranty. If the original owner wishes to have his
product repaired for damages not covered by the warranty we will do so for a reasonable fee if such repair is
possible. Shipping costs will be charged. Our warranty
only extends to the original owner of the product.

D, 810 SW 34th Street, Renton, WA 98057. All shipments
must be prepaid and insured. Sherpa Adventure Gear
will not be liable for packages lost in transit.
Our warranty does not cover items bought on close outs
or at off price outlets. For further information on warranty issues, please contact Customer Services at Sherpa
Adventure Gear 425.251.0760.
It is expected and recommended that the user follow the
care instructions on our care label for all our products.
