2015 SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup
Final Report
2015 SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup
Protecting the health of Oregon’s beaches since 1986.
SOLVE is a non-profit organization whose mission is to bring
Oregonians together to improve our environment and build a
legacy of stewardship.
Each spring, SOLVE volunteers travel from all over the state
to help out at one of 45 coastal cleanup sites during the
Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup. From Fort Stevens State Park
near Astoria to Harris Beach State Park in Brookings,
thousands of volunteers scour the coastline each year to
protect our oceans, wildlife and coastal economies.
In 1984, the dream of the first statewide beach cleanup took
root after Oregonians Judie Hansen and Eleanor Dye were
inspired to rid the state’s beaches of litter. Their cleanup
model has since spread across the nation and throughout the
world. Over the past 30 years, more than 125,000 Spring
Oregon Beach Cleanup volunteers have removed over
880 tons of litter from Oregon’s beaches.
2015 Accomplishments
More than 5,150 volunteers turned out coast-wide on
March 28 at 45 coastal cleanup sites.
With SOLVE support, volunteers accomplished the following
improvements to Oregon’s beaches:
• Removed 68,054 pounds of litter and marine debris
• Removed 53 tires
• Recycled over 2,000 pounds of debris to be turned into
educational art sculptures

Letter from the Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup Coordinator
Since 1984, the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach
Cleanup has mobilized thousands of volunteers across
Oregon to come together in an effort to keep our
beaches and waterways clean and healthy. The level of
commitment to this event is inspiring. This year over
100 volunteer Zone and Beach Captains and 5,150
Oregonians stepped up to make a difference for our coastlines.
In addition to our amazing volunteers statewide, SOLVE would
like to thank all of our wonderful sponsors, including our haulers
who have been donating their services to the twice-annual beach
cleanups for over 30 years. Additionally, the Oregon Parks and
Recreation Department and our dedicated volunteer leaders are
invaluable to this event as they have spent countless hours
helping to coordinate each year. We look forward to seeing you
next year on March 26!

Teaching the Next Generation
All along the coast, the beach cleanup draws dozens of families, school groups, Boy and Girl Scout troops,
church youth groups, and after-school clubs. Of the thousands of volunteers at the 2015 Spring Oregon
Beach Cleanup, approximately one-third were youth and students.
At the Gleneden Beach Cleanup, over 100 high school students from
the Salem Teen Outreach Program were taught about the issue of
marine debris and how their actions impact the world around them.
Several youth and young adult volunteers from the Portland
Opportunities Industrialization Center also joined the cleanup effort,
giving back to the environment while learning life skills. Together with
other volunteers at the site, they helped to remove 600 pounds of
debris and will serve as the next generation of coastal stewards.
After a presentation by SOLVE staff on the issue of marine debris and the
importance of volunteerism, several students from Sunnsyside Environmental School
in Portland decided to clean the beach near Hug Point. They sifted thousands of
pieces of plastic from the high tide line and plan to repurpose their finds by turning
them into educational art pieces. The beach cleanup even inspired one of the classes
at the school to clean up their local river by joining the SOLVE Adopt-a-River
program!
Sponsor Spotlight
A big thank you to the Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup sponsors who brought out volunteers during the
event! Major Sponsor, Fred Meyer, recruited over 100 volunteers for the Seaside Beach Cleanup, joining
Media Sponsors K103 FM and KOIN 6 on site. Supporting Sponsor, The Standard, joined the Pelican
Pub Beach Cleanup effort in Pacific City with more 50 volunteers. Coordinating Sponsor, the Oregon
Parks and Recreation Department, led over half of the 45 check-in sites and helped haul thousands of
pounds of trash. In addition, the Local Coast Haulers once again generously donated their support to the
cleanups coast-wide, a service they have provided for over three decades.
Beach Captain Testimonial: Sand Lake Duners
Why We Clean the Beach:
To our sand family, the SOLVE Spring Oregon Beach Cleanup is not only a weekend to come together for
camping, but also an opporunity to care for an area that has helped create so many wonderful memories
for so many families. We have sand families that have been going to the Sand Lake Recreation Area since
the 1970’s and this was our eleventh year being involved with the SOLVE coast-wide beach cleanup.
Honoring Papa:
Last fall we lost a sand family member, Donald “Dale” Imai - better known as Papa. He was an
amazing man and has left behind his family for us to love and watch over. During the SOLVE Spring
Oregon Beach Cleanup, we took the opportunity to honor him at the Sand Lake Recreation Area. It was
important to honor Papa during the cleanup because he had
been involved with the SOLVE beach cleanups since the 1990s.
Looking Forward to the Future:
The Sand Lake Duners will continue to be a a part of the
SOLVE tradition and look forward to many more years taking
care of our little “sand box” area. We hold a potluck at every
SOLVE event and always welcome volunteers to join!

Strange Finds
Most of the debris collected by volunteers was common, everyday litter like cigarette butts, fishing rope,
plastic bags, and bottles. However, there were also many strange finds, including two baby strollers, a
bayonet, several grocery carts, a 125 foot mooring rope, a mattress, a broken mailbox, a car bumper, and
a discarded refrigerator. Two young volunteers even found $10.30!
Other unique finds included a freshwater dock that washed up on the beach south of Humbug Mountain
and dozens of baskets that traveled to Oregon from Japan along Pacific Ocean currents.
Cleanup Sites and Coordinators
The success of this event depends on well-organized Zone Captains. These are volunteer leaders who, along with
support from SOLVE, recruit and train Beach Captains for sites in their zone and work with local haulers. Beach
Captains run the check in site and make sure volunteers receive supplies and safety information. More than half the
Zone Captains are Oregon Parks and Recreation (OPRD) staff. Members of the Surfrider Foundation also help out
with several of the check in sites. We couldn’t do it without them!
