After all the planning, preparations, and hard work, the CMPT annual Mopar
Roundup on April 21st was a success. With Diane Sox, Butch “The California Flash”
and Clark, Colleen, and Marie Rand, the day was destined to be a winner. All told,
$6500 was raised for the Ronnie Sox Foundation, and there were 103 cars in attendance
with another six in the corral.
It was an honor to see first hand how Ronnie Sox and his legacy have touched
so many people. While giving a helping hand to the Rand’s in getting packed up, an
older gentleman pulled up, excitedly asking “If the Sox & Martin team was here.” Mark
Buchanan broke the news to him that Ronnie had passed last year. It was apparent that
You could see the man was visibly disappointed. He then hopped out of his car, and
made a beeline for the ‘67 GTX. After a few minutes he returned, so excited and exhausted he appeared to have just
sprinted across the parking lot. He then
went in to a story about having raced
Ronnie way back in the day, at a now
defunct raceway when he was in high
school. You could almost see the
memories in his eyes. He continued for
about five minutes on various Ronnie
Sox encounters, pausing only long
enough to get some fresh oxygen in his
lungs. Diane finally had a chance to
introduce herself when the man ran out
of air. I thought the poor guy was going to pass out when he realized he’d been talking to
Ronnies WIFE. She told him Butch Leal was over at Sugar babies and that didn’t help his
condition much.
It is stories like these that make it all worth
it. Yes, we had fun, yes we raised money
for charity. But we will never know how
many people had a memory, a thought, or
smile come to them that day. Special
thanks to Diane Sox, Butch Leal, and the
Rand family for bringing a part of racing
history to North Texas. Page two of this
newsletter is a direct copy of a letter that
Diane sent to the club.

From the President’s Desk
Hey everybody, this is Ken Castleman the new President of your club. I want to say first to Mark Buchanan, you did a great job the last several years as
our leader and that your shoes will be hard ones to
fill. I hope that I can do the job as well as you did.
So just sit back and enjoy your IBC Root Beer!!!
Next I want to say that if you missed the show, you
missed one of the best shows that the club has had in
a long time. Diane Sox is a wonderful lady that I had
the pleasure in meeting and Butch Leal was a great
gentleman too. Diane was shocked when she learned
that the Cowtown Mopars raised over $6500 for the
Ronnie Sox Foundation. She also told me that one of
the highlights of the show was when John Morawski
let her drive his 1970 Hemi Cuda to the show. None
of us were expecting that and was a huge surprise to
us too. Thanks John for picking Diane up and bringing her to the show. The Rands have done an excellent job with the preservations of the 1967 Plymouth
GTX and the 1968 Plymouth Barracuda that Ronnie
and Buddy raced. They are great people too and
Clark’s brother and sister-in-law also brought their
1967Plymouth Belvedere to show too. They actually
drove it from Lufkin Texas. It was the winner of the
First Jimmy Box award. After the show, several of
us went over to Sugar Babies Bar-B-Cue and had
dinner with Diane, Butch, and the Rands. We had a
great time just sitting around and listening to Diane
telling us some stories about Ronnie. They were
very heart filling. I know as Diane said, Ronnie was
smiling down on us and would have been very
pleased about our show. We also did something for
the first time for our shows. We got the show officially kicked off at Noon with Diana Foster and her
group, Vocal Magic, singing the National Anthem.
They did a great job and I would like to have them to
do it again. The only thing that I can say about Saturday is you just had to be there. I want to thank
Diane, Butch, and the Rands for coming to the show.
The next thing I want to say is “Congratulation” to
all of the winners. I want to say next to Mike Miller
and Ken Angel that they have done great for the club
too. Steve Wiggins also did a timely job as the
newsletter editor as well. Thanks to all of you. We
are finishing the final touches for the Laps for Charity and will have all of the information posted on the
web site. I’m looking forward to seeing everybody
at the next meeting and if you thought this show was
good, wait and see what we are planning for next
year.

From the desk of our Web Guru
(why is there white out on that monitor Mike?)
As promised..... I am working on the web site! The site is uploading to a
new server as I type this. So far it has taken 4 hours. That is a lot of
stuff! I will begin working on new pages for the site and doing some
house cleaning too. The updated server can be accessed thru the
www.cowtownmopars.com domain name. If you go in thru Hemming
under the old bookmarks you have, the site will be there for a few more
days until I finish an intro page that will redirect you to the new server.
Once there you can bookmark the new site and skip the intro. I will
leave the intro on the Hemmings server because we do get a lot of traffic
thru them! We will increase from 200MB of storage to 5000MB so I can
get crazy with photos now!
I will also be capable of having ALL of the newsletters archived. Another good thing is that we will now have our
own mail box to make contacting club members a whole lot easier. Each of the board members will also have their
own @cowtownmopars.com email address!

CRUISE NEWS
Saturday May 12th, 2007 is the annual Laps For Charity at Texas Motor Speedway. The club will be
having it’s Saturday cruise night there, with food and beverages. Cost is $30 for 3 laps around the speedway, and $10 to get a picture of you and your vehicle in Victory Lane. As last year, Attempts will be
made to get good video and pictures of the event, and will be available on DVD to those that would like
a copy.
Editor’s Corner
By Kirk Maisenbacher
When Steve Wiggin announced that he would be unable to continue as the newsletter editor, the
board started brainstorming a list of potential replacements. I was partly honored that my name came up, but
at the same time scared they would even remember the name of a person who until last year had never even
attended our car show, or a race, or a Saturday cruise night.
But, here I am. Burning the midnight oil trying to get a newsletter built from scratch. Learning the
software and trying to design a newsletter simultaneously isn’t that fun. It will be a pot hole filled launch out
of the hole, with a very rough first 60 feet. After that it should hopefully be smooth pass, with future newsletters being more complete than this one. If you have any suggestion, ideas, or comments, feel free to get in
touch with me. This is YOUR newsletter, and I need your help to make sure it has what YOU want in it.
I would like to thank everyone that helped make the car show a success. Lesa Key did
a great job of filling my camera with pictures while I worked the computer during the show,
and I thank her for that. Mark and Shelly Fowler did an excellent job of picture taking as well.
I hope to compile them all on CD, and will have them available hopefully at the May meeting..

May 2007 CAR OF THE MONTH
Jim Hoppers 1969 Roadrunner
This is my 1969 Satellite / Roadrunner. besides all the obvious reasons it is important to me, the number one reason is because this was a gift. When I was younger
my uncle in Illinois had a beautiful 69 roadrunner. I loved that car and always
wanted one, but never seemed to be able to get me one. On my 40th b-day my wife
took me out to eat. While at the restaurant my family from Illinois showed up to surprise me. After dinner we all went home and when I opened the garage and started
to pull in, there it sat. At first I was like who in the heck parked in my garage, then
my uncle turned to me and handed me a set of keys. he said “I know you always
wanted one and this one is yours. Your Mom, step dad, and I have been working on
it on and off you a few years. We are so proud of you for surviving your cancer going back to school and getting your degree.” They had wanted to give it to me for
my graduation but my uncle suffered some injuries in the coal mines and my step
dad had to have a lung removed due to cancer. But after all that they still managed
to partially restore it enough to get it to me for my b-day. This car will always be a
reminder of the love and commitment my family, though far away still shows me. It
is still a work in progress, going on 6 years now and with the help of this club I hope
to someday be able to drive it to Illinois and show them how much I love it and
them.....
