I n writing this letter for the Trainers Issue, I've often reflected on the great trainers I've had who have enabled me to do what I love to do to the best of my ability. This time I would like to write about the wonderful benefits of seeing students improve and grow as riders. Yes, it can be terribly disappointing watching a student not get the desired result at a crucial time, but seeing them conquer that pitfall and rise up to succeed is incredibly satisfying. At this point it is no longer an instructor simply giving instruction, it is a coach out there riding every step with you. A good trainer is the path to success. Undoubtedly, having our country's best riders and trainers mentoring our up-and-coming athletes will make this country's riders stay the best in the world. I have had the honor of having working students who have started out as beginners in dressage and have gone on to become top international competitors. That is incredibly satisfying! Equally as satisfying to me is helping an amateur whose dream it is to one day ride a great dressage test at a certain level accomplish that goal. Helping any rider achieve a dream, whether the Olympic stadium or 65 percent at First Level, is a moving experience! To strive for a goal is a wonderful journey. I will be honest, training to be the best is not always full of fun and ease. I have said things to students in a moment of frustration that we still chuckle about! My words of advice for students and trainers alike: embrace the journey, brush off the disappointments, relish in the successes, and never forget that in the end, the ultimate teacher is the horse! I hope you enjoy this issue’s articles showcasing some of our area’s great trainers who work incredibly hard to be the very best they can be. Ω Beaconwoods Farm Opening Beaconwoods Farm, a luxurious new facility in Glastonbury, Connecticut, will be opening soon. The farm has been a long time dream for owners Nick and Laurie Paternoster and they are thrilled to finally see it coming to fruition. Kristen Newton is Beaconwoods' trainer, and Kristen is excited to have such a fabulous barn to work out of. The facility is a King Construction work, and Laurie and Michael have been delighted with the quality of the work and the timeliness of the job. The stunning barn includes 24 stalls, a separate work aisle with wash stalls and farrier/vet stalls (with parking and access available so the farrier or vet can conveniently back their trucks right up to the stalls), an observation/lounge area featuring warming ovens (Laurie foresees a lot of pizza!) and offices for the trainers and Laurie. Tack rooms, a laundry room, and a blanket room designed to keep blankets neat and orderly are included. The roomy 84' x 200' indoor is attached to the barn area and will feature the footing from the now defunct Syracuse Invitational Horse Show. The outdoor is 100' x 200' and paddocks are in progress. Separate hay and manure buildings are designed so that trucks can drive right through, facilitating work. There is a five bay garage for barn equipment. It's exciting to have this gorgeous new facility in Connecticut, and we congratulate Laurie, Michael, and Kristen Newton and wish them the best of luck! Ω Washington International Horse Show Signs Three-Year Deal with Verizon Center The Washington International Horse Show (WIHS is pleased to announce a three-year deal with Verizon Center to extend its run at the Washington, D.C. venue through 2013. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS since 2000. The 53rd annual Washington International Horse Show will take place October 25-30. “We are thrilled to remain at Verizon Center and continue this great Washington tradition. Verizon Center has been home to WIHS for 12 years, and while there are complexities in producing an urban horse show with shipping horses in and out of the city and closing city streets to create stables, it also makes us one of the most exciting horse shows in the country,” said Anthony F. Hitchcock, chief operating officer of WIHS. The Verizon Center is a 20,000-seat multi-purpose sports and entertainment venue, owned and operated by Monumental Sports & Entertainment, in the Penn Quarter section of Chinatown in downtown Washington, D.C. "Charlie is a dedicated competitor in the Show Jumping Hall of Fame Jumper Classic Series," said George Morris, President of the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. Ω World of Horses Coming to Belmont The World of Horses will celebrate the Memorial Day weekend on Sunday, May 29 at Belmont Park. This event, which precedes the Belmont Stakes June 11, gives a wide audience a look at local horses, riders and equestrian activities. Last year nearly 10,000 spectators were on hand to watch. The Parade of Breeds is tentatively scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. Led by the Nassau County mounted unit, it includes all of the performers and numerous stables and individuals, as well as a variety of horse breeds. Riding exhibitions take place on the main track between races. A reining performance will be presented by George Small and his daughter, Rein America Norton, of Great River Ranch. The entire Norton family is involved with horses. Rein, 10, is one of its youngest members and has participated in the World of Horses since she was a tot on the lead line. Her older brother and sister, Gregg and Patricia, appeared many times at the World of Horses. George has been riding most of his life and helped teach all of the Norton children. Grand Prix dressage rider Lorraine Burke of Islip will be joined by her daughter Kaleigh, 14, in a pas de deux. Lorraine and her Hanoverian gelding, Lord Camelot, were the Islip Horsemen’s Association’s Grand Prix year-end champions in 2008 and 2009 and took the FEI reserve last year. Kaleigh rides a Paso Fino called Cody, who has won at local dressage shows and earned the IHA junior/young rider championship last year. Although the horses differ in type and levels, Lorraine plans to choreograph her routine to maximize the abilities of both. Cindy Laskow of Crystal Brook Farm in Centerreach demonstrates jumping, as seen in hunter and jumper competition, along with one of her students, Samantha Renieris, 16. Cindy has been riding since she was six and presently trains horses and riders in hunters, jumpers and equitation. The afternoon highlight is a performance by the Islip Horsemen’s Association’s Spirit of Long Island Drill Team. Riding to upbeat, patriotic music, this group has delighted crowds at Belmont Park, Saratoga and elsewhere with its precise, intricate movements. It also participated in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade in 2009. The team is coached by Joanne Gould of Islip Terrace. Additional exhibitions will be added as the plans progress. Sunday is also Family Fun Day at Belmont Park, providing a special outing for people of all ages. Belmont Park is easy to reach by car or public transportation. It is off exit 26D of the Cross Island Parkway, and there are entrances on H e m p s t e a d Turnpike. For Lorraine Burke (top) will be giving a information call the dressage demonstration while Cindy New York Racing Laskow (bottom) will be showing her Association, 516jumping skills at The World of Horses at 488-6000. International artist, Josée Nadeau, did a real-time painting of grand prix rider, Pablo Barrios, in front of an audience at The Gallery at The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center (PBIEC) to cap off her three-week exhibition at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival. Nadeau was inspired by a 3D image of Barrios jumping captured by photographer Jack Mancini, the WEF Yearbook producer. The photograph, a product of LifeMaskPhoto, captivated Nadeau by its depth and clarity. Nadeau remarked, "This is tremendously exciting. The technology of the product allows me to dissect the image before picking up a brush." Pablo Barrios hails from Venezuela and rides for G&C Farm, owned by Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal. Pablo represented Venezuela at the 2008 Olympic Games and 2010 World Equestrian Games. Bruce Springsteen has stopped at The Gallery to look at her unique blending of music, motion and art, which began when George Harrison, lead guitarist for The Beatles, sang to her for four hours at the home of Guy Laliberté, founder of Cirque du Soleil. Josée said, "Within an hour a work of art within me is projected from what captured my senses onto a large canvas for everyone to enjoy including myself." The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has exclusive release of the Rolling Stones’ classic Wild Horses, performed and produced by the legendary Willie Nelson and his family. The riders were judged by two panels and also received a score in the schooling area after the first and second rounds. Judging Panel 1 included McLain Ward and George Morris; Panel 2 included Jimmy Torano and Anne Kursinski; and judging in the schooling arena was provided by Joe Stone. After a final deliberation from the judges, Benson was deemed the class winner, and her horse San Remo VDL also earned an award as Best Equitation Horse. EB admitted to getting nervous before the big class and is very superstitious: "My shirt says ‘Lucky’ on it and I wear it to all of the finals. I have a lucky collar and lucky socks.” She had a special, personal connection to the win because her father, Jack Benson, and George Morris were friends. "George is awesome. My dad passed away last year, and one of the things George said to me was, 'I used to go to your dad's horse shows.' They were friends, so it was amazing to actually win.” Elizabeth learned to ride at her family’s farm, Briarwood, under the tutelage of her parents, and recently joined Stacia Madden at Beacon Hill Show Stables who coached her to this victory. Garson says one of the benefits of long term studenttrainer relationships and a key to their success is that over time, the pair develops trust and an ability to clearly communicate with one another. “I’ve had the opportunity to see Dana grow as a rider, yes, but I’ve also had the privilege to see her grow mentally and emotionally.” Nona looks forward to continued years of success for Dana at the biggest horse shows in the United States, a quest for competing at Young Riders, trips to college, and being a part of Dana’s life beyond it all. It was only natural that I’d be the one to start off her child when she came along as a toddler to ride with her mom.” To the amusement of The Ridge Farm staff, Nona would often be seen breaking away from a course walk on Grand Prix days to lead Dana in her leadline class at big “AA” shows. Today, Nona accompanies Dana on intense course walks for her jumper classes, guiding her step by step and sharing with her the secrets to a winning ride. Over the years the farm has expanded to three locations: The Ridge at Riverview in Asbury, New 26 Jersey and The Ridge at Tewksbury in Lebanon, New Jersey, as well as The Ridge at Wellington in Florida. I have a lot of trouble gripping with my thigh at the sitting trot. My instructor tells me to relax but I just can't seem to do it. Any suggestions? A. Ashley Holzer Cealy Tetley Gripping with your thigh is very normal, and frankly, quite hard to fix. When we ride we have two thought processes going on in our brain. The first process is conscious thought. It is the voice that consciously tells your body to do things like...look where you are going, or keep your hands down. The subconscious thought process subconsciously sends your body messages that enable you to balance without really thinking about it. Unfortunately, your subconscious also realizes that your are on a horse, or large moving object quite high off the ground, and it needs to keep you safe. If you watch a young child ride who is very comfortable around horses and sees them as anything BUT a threat, you will witness a relaxed "grip free" rider. That child's brain does not recognize the situation as harmful and therefore does not react in a fearful or tense way. When I tell riders this, many of them respond by saying they are not afraid. Consciously you are not afraid, but subconsciously your brain sends signals to the body like, "Watch out. This could get ugly!" Your body's attempt to "hold on and grip" unfortunately creates a cycle of bad responses. The tight leg pushes you out of the saddle and causes instability in your seat. Your brain senses that instability and grips more! Your instructor is correct in trying to get you to relax as this relaxation would allow your leg to lengthen and your seat to remain in the saddle. Once your body is subconsciously able to realize the safety in relaxing and moving with the horse, it would also turn off the "danger" signal which causes the tension. Now, how to do it. The only way I have ever had any luck with overriding this strong thought process is through targeted muscle exhaustion! I don't recommend this often and it does not make one the most popular trainer, but in this particular situation I have seen it do wonders! Let's face it. You can try and try to tell that muscle to stop gripping, but it just won't listen. I do a little reverse psychology. I tell the rider to grip like crazy! I make her go around and around the ring in posting trot without stirrups for ages! (If rider safety is an issue, make sure it is done in a controlled environment or on a lunge line.) It’s amazing to me how long some people can last! (I guess practice makes perfect and they are really strong grippers!) When they truly can't bear it any longer and are begging to do sitting trot, I have them do one more circle and then tell them to sit. If they have done it long enough, the muscle will relax from fatigue and their subconscious will realize that they are in fact, better off not gripping! Not only can you balance better but its a lot less physical work! I know I have to say this as there will be some people out there who may try this for so long they damage their thigh muscles. PLEASE do not overdo it to the point of damaging your body. If you are not sure how much your legs can take, start out slowly and add time to the length of the posting trot without stirrups. You will know when you've gone long enough when the thought of sitting trot is a relief. Like I said, it won't make me the most popular trainer, but I've seen it work time and time again! Today’s Equestrian May 2011 Today’s Equestrian May 2011 33 KIP’S TIPS Q. By Kip Rosenthal Pet Peeves As a trainer and a judge, what would you say are the biggest weaknesses in riders today? What can they do to improve? A. My pet peeves in judging equitation are twofold. One is when a rider is stiff. I hate stiffness. This is evident when it looks as though the rider went through the dry cleaners and came out starched! The horse feels this tension and jumps accordingly...rigid and stiff. Usually their basics are good but they're over schooled in their position so it is no longer natural but looks forced and rigid. The other thing I hate is the “equitation” pelham. This is a wonderful bit used correctly but I hate to see a horse jammed up and his poll behind a vertical line to the ground. Years ago we learned how to use the pelham...how the two reins worked. Today so many equitation horses are bridled in a pelham and the rider just holds both reins and has no idea how this bit works, especially on the flat. I hate to see a horse riding behind the bit with his nose tucked into his chest. I see this all too often. Most equitation horses show in various kinds of pelhams today. It's a wonderful bit when used correctly, but in my eyes, I see it abused by riders with uneducated hands and their horses just deal with it. It would be nice to see advanced riders understand how the pelham bit affects their horse. She has the best temperament, is smart and listens, and she absolutely loves Sofia.” Marialena added that Sofia wanted her very own puppy from the moment she could say the word ‘dog.’ At a Salt River Farm Horse Show last summer, a litter of Corgi pups were brought in by local breeder Bernadette Garcia of Little Ripple Farm. “Sofia spotted Daisy and it was love at first sight....so, of course, we went home with her,” said Marialena. Y D 34 Today’s Equestrian May 2011 Today’s Equestrian May 2011 35 Questions for Brianne Goutal A. Do you love to train as much as compete? Train as in practice or teach? To be completely honest, I am a rider through and through and I live for the thrill of the show ring. In terms of training students, I do enjoy teaching but I am insecure of my skills as a trainer! A. A. Who do you look up to? There are way too many people to name! In terms of riders, the few that come to mind immediately are Michael Matz, Conrad Homfeld, McLain Ward, and Leslie Howard, among others. In terms of those who have been particularly influential in my life are my parents and Max Amaya, my trainer/partner. When did you start riding? I was 5 or 6 years old when I started riding. A. Who was, or is, your favorite pony or horse? I don't have a favorite pony or horse. I love them all equally! Although I will say that I have a special place in my stable for a certain few! How old were you when you won your first competition? I must have been about 7 or 8 years old and in the Hamptons competing in short stirrup. ESI Photography A. A. What do you love the most about competing? I love the rush of when it all comes together. We work so hard for only a few minutes of actual competition time, so when everything works out the way you've planned for it to and hoped it would, there is no better feeling. That feeling can be achieved from winning a class or seeing the progress of a young horse, etc., but it is an unmistakable feeling of achievement. How old were you when you first had the honor of riding for the US? I was 17. A. A. What competition is your favorite? Royal Winter Fair, Hampton Classic and WEF. What advice would you give kids wanting to pursue the dream of riding for their country? As cheesey as it sounds, in this sport hard work and patience really do pay off. Sometimes working with animals can be a roller coaster ride but it is one that teaches you humility and the importance of being persistent. If there is one thing to learn or to teach people involved with horses it is the importance of perseverance and the compassion needed for and deserved by the horses that provide you with everything you ask. Ω A. A. What was your most emotional victory and why? That is a toss up between winning the Maclay Finals and winning the Nations Cup in Falsterbo, Sweden. The Maclay was an emotional roller coaster because I was being followed and filmed by Animal Planet crews. My winning the Maclay was the desired ending for the show and it added extra pressure that I had not experienced prior to that day. Also, I knew that my winning the Maclay would result in losing my horse, Logan. Once you win a "final" you can no longer compete in the class and the fact that I was trying to win the fourth and last equitation final made the victory bittersweet. The Nations Cup win in Sweden was emotionally straining because it was my first time competing on behalf of the US team. It is one thing to compete for yourself and it is another to compete on behalf of your team mates and country. I definitely felt the pressure jumping off against Denmark's selected rider! A. What is your favorite book/movie/song? My favorite book is The Odyssey by Homer. My favorite movie is The Fighter and my favorite songs are Ziggy Stardust (David Bowie) or You Give Me Something (James Morrison). Definitely bridging the horse show world with the real world. I go to Brown University full time so it gets complicated when trying to stay ahead of two demanding schedules. I find it is very important not to procrastinate and to be aware of personal capacities. A. A. How do you juggle going to college and competing? I love the everyday tedium of working with my horses and getting to know all the ins and outs of their respective personalities. I believe that true long-lived success is achieved only when there is a strong bond between horse and rider, and this is achieved only after the needed time and effort is put in. About Mon Gamin, Brianne said, “Since the day we got him, he’s been competitive. He’s a real winner. He goes in every time more careful than the last, which is why we move back down a class every time we show him. I think he’s found a niche as a speed horse, especially with me. He’s a really happy horse and we try to keep it that way.” Brianne, who is 22 years old, first saw Mon Gamin in France when she participated in a twoweek clinic with French Olympic show jumper, Thierry Pommel. She recalled, “There were three horses: a black one, a white one and a pinto. He was a six-year-old stallion. He was so cute! I don’t know if I thought he was amazing or just cute. I just had to have him. I had a dream about him and I convinced my dad that it was fate. It was destiny!” she laughed. “I ended up with a pinto and we gelded him because he was wild. Newfoundland, N.J. 07435 973-697-1149 By Kendall Fately, 16 NJHSA Show Ring Editor T hey say that April showers bring May flowers, and I am so incredibly excited for warm weather. It means a number of wonderful things such as the annual Garden State Horse Show and riding outside! Garden State really marks the beginning of the outdoor show season for me. I have to say, it’s much more pleasant leaving the barn at 6 a.m. for a show when it’s closer to 60° or 70° as opposed to 35°. I find that spring is one of my favorite seasons to ride because it means that Robert, my trainer, starts giving lessons outside. We re-set the jumps in the outdoor and so an entirely different approach to lessons presents itself. We are fortunate to have a large outdoor, and Robert builds his jumps so they are both interesting and pretty. We start to focus on flatwork (no stirrups!) and basic dressage movements, such as leg yields, half passes, shoulder in, haunches in and turn on the haunches. For jumping, there’s always a fun and exciting course set, complete with the typically trappy and tricky things you find at the shows: a water jump, one with no standards, a triple, or any combination of the three. I’ve been training with Robert Beck at Hunter’s Crossing Farm for five years now, starting first on my large pony Galen Raintree and now on two horses, Magnetic (Blue), my big eq. horse, and Lorio (Huey). I’m really looking forward to that first ride outside on both of my boys. I’m pretty sure that Huey will be a gentleman, but the moment I try a lead change from left to right on Blue, I’ll get a booty-scooty followed by a buck. Maybe this year he’ll surprise me with something new. Ω www.westmilfordequestrian.com A lifetime of experience making a difference. We pride ourselves on maintaining an immaculate barn and facility. Known on the dressage circuit as “Charlie,” the much-loved retailer had taken his tack store, Euro-American to new heights, providing a unique niche for US dressage riders for many years and creating quite a following. The re-emergence of a store owned and operated by Charlie has been greeted with open arms by the dressage community and, luckily for dressage riders as a whole, Charlie’s new store is better than ever. C harlie came to fame with Euro-American by knowing exactly what discriminating dressage riders wanted, and supplying it to them at reasonable costs. With The Dressage Connection, Charlie’s philosophy of serving the dressage rider remains the same and through his association with Michael Davis of PanaCavallo, a distributor of bridles, saddles and leather goods, Charlie is doing what he does best––supplying the latest and greatest in dressage tack, apparel and accessories at a reasonable cost. “We started Euro American Saddlery in 1995 and were unique in that we were the first to get involved with fitting and customizing saddles,” Charlie said. “I am still doing that with The Dressage Connection and at our mobile unit on the show grounds riders can bring their horses right up to the tent for a saddle fitting. Our goal with The Dressage Connection remains the same as it was with Euro-American, which is to provide excellent service and top-rate products that will set us apart from everyone else.” Charlie said that teaming up with PanaCavallo, and Michael Davis, has been a win-win situation. Davis, an adult amateur dressage rider, offers a great perspective on the dressage market, as he is a rider as well as the owner of several international FEI dressage competition horses. “As a rider and an owner, Michael understands the consumer’s mind and I really appreciate that,” Charlie said, adding that Michael and his entire family compete on the dressage circuit. “Michael stands behind PanaCavallo, and one of our goals is to promote PanaCavallo products to other retailers. Together we are bringing the dressage community the highest quality and most cost effective dressage equipment on the market.” Charlie’s reputation in the dressage world speaks for itself, and when The Dressage Connection opened their mobile store on the winter dressage circuit in Florida, dressage fans eagerly brought their horses up to be fitted and to browse through the selection of tack and apparel. “Our mobile store features everything an equestrian could want,” Charlie said. “We have a Konig tent, a PanaCavallo tent, The Dressage Connection tent, and a Hennig Saddles tent. I was excited to see the excitement for our new store among so many old friends who are familiar with our service and the products we offer. We had such success in the past, from being innovative with different bridles and brow bands, to having the rights to our own special design of Konig boots. It’s great was great to be back in Florida this winter with so much new and exciting merchandise to offer and I do feel like we are better than ever.” Because so much of equestrian apparel and tack comes from overseas, Charlie has become intimately familiar with the logistical aspects of importing goods to the US. With this knowledge, he has been able to keep prices low for his customers despite fluctuations in foreign markets. “We were faced with a challenge when the currency in Europe changed to Euros and went through the roof. Our solution was to produce the products ourselves and keep prices low,” Charlie said. “It really is all about the clients, being able to get quality products for them at a reasonable cost.” Charlie added that The Dressage Connection also has an elevated fashion sense, thanks to his wife. Lisa, who also competes on the dressage circuit, has created a beautiful boutique in Wellington and dressage riders are raving about the store. “Lisa has picked out two new lines of breeches from Italy. They are one-of-a-kind and you won’t see them anywhere else,” Charlie said. “We have custom tail coats, short coats, 200 different fabrics, lining, buttons, everything is customized. Our main goal is to bring high quality service as well as have an inventory under one roof so that riders won’t have to place orders and wait for two months.” Throughout the years Charlie has always been known as a team player, a tradition he continues with The Dressage Connection. The Totas recently helped to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s ‘Equestrian of the Year’ event by hosting a fashion show in Wellington, Florida. The Dressage Connection outfitted the models, which included dressage riders from the area and Lisa Tota herself. Charlie was also proud to announce that he is sponsoring the Canadian Dressage Team at the Pan American Games, and will provide new bridles from PanaCavallo, along with stirrups, girths and saddle pads, to the riders as well as perform saddle fittings for the entire Canadian team. “I am proud to support our North American teams and am working on sponsoring our U.S. team also,” Charlie said. Team members aren’t the only ones getting saddle fittings, as The Dressage Connection is offering free, on-site saddle fitting consultations for all who are interested. “We also offers a one-year guarantee on all of their bridles and strap goods,” Charlie said. “I have compete confidence in our products to stand behind a one year, unconditional guarantee.” Charlie was glad to able to bring The Dressage Connection to fruition this past winter in Florida and is looking forward to heading north and taking his new store on the road. The Dressage Connection has already created a buzz in the dressage world and has indeed filled a unique niche within the dressage community.
