The regular meeting of the Texas Spokes Sports Car

The Minutes were read and approved.
The Club bank balance is now $.599.57 with several out
standing bills.
Oscar Backus reported that we need additional equip
ment for our gymkhanas such a~ streamers and staunchians.
Larry Appleby stated that the club does have streamers.
Jim Wathen will either locate our streamers or check into
getting some which will probably be free~
After a short discussion it was decided that the
meetings will continue at Leif Johnson even though David
Stamman said that the spice (beer) was missing.
The Spokes "500" will be held May 23 at Austin SpeedO-Rama with the club paying ~~25.00 for the use of the track.
David Smith reported on the GVRA event.

David Starnrnan reported that the S.C.C.A. event was ter

Phil Gerrow will give the club a bid for building a
trailer for our equipment. Larry Hearn wants .:;:175.00· for
his trailer.
Jack Cartwright stated that Covert Buick would like to
sponsor (and pay) for an event - preferrably Nov. 20 - 21.
He is to get the offer in writing. Lewis said that Ford

can get.
Rattle contributions must be delivered to Jan Appleby

Will the Real Ford Motorsports hSSO .. Please Stand Up?
by Gary Ferser
This is an insider's view of what really went on at TIS
during the first annual Lone Star Regional Roundup. I drove
over in the Super Sprite early Saturday morning along with Dave
Smith who was towing his new Cortina GT race car behind his old
familar Cortina GT (B Sedan watch out - Dave didn~t take too
kindly to being beaten at the Hill and this Cortina #2 is a
hairy mama)l About half way over, we caught Jack Cartwright
who was towing his funny looking 0tal behind a really keen
oamper truck ..
Our first indication of what was to come was when we
got to th~ track and were told that we would have to drive
back to Bryan, 10 miles away, to register for the event at the
Holiday Inn, Well, we left the race cars at the track and
when we~got to the Holiday Inn they told us that tech inspec
tinn wa~ being done there. With pleading, we got them to a
gree to tech the cars at the track. Fun. 1~e schedule said
practice would start at 8:00 but it was now after 10:00 and
nothinf, was moving - typical of the entire week-end.
During the tech inspection we fouGht our second skirmish
with the Fr~ - car classification. They used g~~ classifica
tion rules based on the Ford !VIotor Cmmpany "formula ". The
classification book had about ten pages of Ford products
Torinos with dual power ash trays, Torinos without dual power
ash trays, nontee;os with racing stripes and hood scoops,
1·1ustang lIach I J s with Rally-Pac adjustable steering wheels,
•••• need I continue - I think you get the picture. On the
last four page s were Lr.s t.ed all them f'unny Lrt t Le furrin cars.
The problem was they d Idri ' t list AII bhcm f'unny little rur-r m
cars. There were a few that were deleted, ~il:e my Sprite,
Dave t s Cortina, Jack's Opel, Lar-r-ys Tiger (IIS u n bea m? I
thought they made electric mixers. II), Phil's Nini, and Vernon's
Cooper. They said the Cooper was a Dune Buggy. (Too bad
that Vernon didn't know that he owned a Dune Bu~gy; he could
have entered the Off-Road Races). The Mini was put in the
Ford Pickup Truck Class (they said it looked like it could
haul manure, what with the back seat out and all). The Tiger
was put in Class Double A Modified (Larry wasn't sure ~
he would be running against). Jack's Opel GT and my Sprite
were put tOGether in a class with the Corvettes and Porsche
914-6 I s . The Cortina was in with a 1971 Mustang Mach I Ram
Air 351, amonG other things. Come to think of it the only
Spokes cars which were listed in the classifications were
Mike Hoffls Pinto and Jim Edrington's Mustang. Could it be
because the little chrome letters on their hoods happen to
be FOR D ?
While 1 1m on the subject of cars - most people noticed
the laok of restroom facilities at the part of the road course
that we were using and assumed that it was simply due to an
oversight in failing to rent portable outhouses when act~ally
8.
.
.i
it was a demonstration by Ford Motor Company of the utility
in ordering a new Nercury 11a::>audel' with the optional porta
ble toilet installed.
We finally got out on to the t.r'ack and made a few
runs (very few runs).. This was thE; f'J.n part, mostly because
the track is so ideal and parlly because there was no way for
F~~ to bother us while we were out there driving.
Later in the afternoon, La~ry, Phil~ Dave, Jimmie, and
Jack went ove::' and found out that they didn1t know beans about
drag racing o Oh well, let the straight line boys have their
thing e
Saturday night was the supreme d i.sappoa.nbment , The
Official Larry Appleby Mjdnight Lightless Offroad Mini Bike
Race Through the Bushes never carne off~ ~~en asked for com
ment the chief steward of this event mumbled something about
wives and motel room showers, I camped out, if you can call
rolling up in a blanket and lying on the ground all night
camping. You have probably noticed that when the sun comes
up all the little birds In the trees start tweetinf,. Well,
that's not all they start doing: I know. I was under a tree.
Sunday I renewed my battle with the Pancho Nasty Racing
Team from Houston. Their cars may be slow, but those Nasty
girls looked real fast~ All of us were faster on Sunday.
Phil Gerrow discovered that he could cut off four seconds
per lap simply by pouring tNO bottles of Nother Webster:s
Miracle Cockaroach Killer on his clutch. He also pours
brake fluid in his carburetors, but you do all kinds of silly
things when your engine is in there sideways an~1ay.. There
were more demonstrations on Sunday. Mike Hoff gave us a door
shutting demonstration using his new Pi.nt.o , Some YO·-YO in
a Ford Nustang Hach I showed us t~nat if you can get your car
sideways in the last t.urn and Lock up t;'le br-ake s . the steering
won:t work, Cool. Unf' or-t unace Ly dt~ri::.1.g t.he cour s e cf the
demonstration, he clobbered tfle e:ectronic timing equipment.
After the runs were finished Ne got the bar-b-que that
Ford had promised- us. Unfortunately they had never said bar
b-cued vffiAT. Really, bar-b-cued armadillo isn1t all that
bad once you fi~lre out how to peel the damn shell off. Too
bad that Larry and Jan and Phil and Carol Ann left before the
Big Event. Right after the bar-b-que they passed out these
little raffle tickets with numbers printed on them. Someone
said that they were to determine who would get the trophies
because the guy with the times had forGotten about the bar
b-que and had left for Houston already, but that wasn't right.
Actually, the holders of the 24 lucky numbers got to go to
the field behind the Holiday Inn to play Squat Tag in the
asparagus patch. The Ninner of ~ was promised a Ureal
treat II!

Our thanks to Tony Ball for an outstanding rallye
even though some of us didn't quite do so well. Hang in
there pilots and navigators. Life can' ,t be as bact as a
rallye. Rallies are for those who want to test their
patience, sense of direction, and nerve limits~ If any
one knows any speclal techniques that would improve these)
three factors let us know. Life could be simpler then. '}
