he theme of the 2009 Nordic Fest is
“Northern deLights” which features the
arts, crafts and traditions of the Sami, the
native inhabitants of northern Norway,
Sweden, Finland and the Russian Kola Peninsula. These
people were also called Lapps or Lapplanders. There
are approximately 80,000 Sami people in northern
Europe and at least 30,000 persons in North America
who have Sami ancestors.

This year’s Nordic Fest Medal will feature
the historic Hotel Winneshiek. This popular
collector’s item will once again be available to
the public in Scandia bronze, .999 pure silver
and gold-plated bronze.

An exhibition of new watercolors by Douglas Eckheart, Professor Emerti at Luther College—
“My Journey: Images of the Artists World Travels “, will be on
display in the Dahl Centennial Union Art Gallery at Luther

features images painted in Norway, Malta, Mexico, Western
Europe, Bahamas, and New Zealand.

Genealogy for Norwegian Americans— Stop by the Thrivent offices at 517 West Water
Street (across the street from Vesterheim) to check out a display by the Norwegian American
Genealogical Center, one of the country’s leading resources for information on Norwegian
genealogy. Located in Madison, Wisconsin, the Genealogy Center is making a special trip to be part
of Nordic Fest. Meet one of the leading experts on Norwegian genealogy, Blaine Hedberg, who will
be available from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both 24 and 25 July. There will be wireless internet access
and some selected basic research materials; short and focussed genealogical consultations will
be provided. High-quality Norwegian road maps and select genealogy publications are also on
sale. Whether you are just starting your family tree or have reached a deadend in your advanced
research, the Genealogy Center can help you!

Sporting Events
Kanoløpet — This canoe race is open to
anyone willing to have a little fun competing
on the Upper Iowa River through the city
of Decorah. Race start: 6:30 p.m. Friday.
Registration deadline: 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
Start at River Trail Outfitters, 212 Pulpit
Rock Rd. (next to the campground).
First team to go under Twin Bridges by
Palisades Park entrance will be declared
the winner. Trophy for each first place
participant. Cost: $27 per person includes
t-shirt, canoe, life jacket, paddle. Or $15
per person includes t-shirt, but must
provide own equipment.
Parade on the River— Immediately following Kanoløpet. This is a noncompetitive race with an award for the most decorative boat that crosses the
finish line.
Elveløpet — The River Run, 5K walk/run, 15K run. Friday registration 6:00-9:00
p.m., City Hall. Saturday registration 6:30-7:00 a.m. City Hall. Elveløpet at 7:30 a.m.
Entry fee: $20 in advance; $25 Friday after 12 p.m. & Saturday morning.
Nordic Rock Throw — Saturday 1:00 p.m., John Cline School, west
lawn. There are 3 weight classes for men and 1 weight class for
women. Must be at least 18 years of
age. Entry fee: $2.00.
Lutefisk Eating Contest— At the
Courthouse Square, Saturday 2:30 p.m.
Lord or Lady of the Log—There can be only one!
Do you have what it takes to be the Lord or Lady
of the log? Come test your balance and light combat skills…if you dare. Contest
to be held during the time between the parade and rock throwing contest near
John Cline Elementary School.
Area Tours
Decorah’s Historic District Walk – Take a self-guided stroll through Phelps Park,
Broadway and Water Street to view Midwestern architecture dating back to the
1850s. Homes and businesses are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Free maps are available at the Main Information Center.
Prairie Walks — Friday and Saturday 7:00 a.m. Walks will be led by Rick Edwards,
Decorah Parks and Recreation Director. For all ages. An opportunity to enjoy the
prairie and learn about nature. Go west on Water St to College Dr, turn left on Fifth Ave,
then left on Ohio St. Drive straight over the dike where parking is available.
Garden Club Tours — The Town & Country Garden Club
is inviting visitors to tour three gardens Friday 9:00 a.m.
- noon and Saturday 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. : 1. Arlene & Jim Lage,
2417 Tamarack Dr. —A hilltop home containing individual
gardens and beautiful landscape plantings. Each plant is
identified. Take Hwy. 9 East through the stoplight at the WalMart corner. Take the first street to the right, up the hill. The

1590 Hwy 9 East— An eclectic collection of perennial rock
gardens, sculptures and restored prairie designed to reflect
the beauty of nature. Take Hwy 9 East towards Waukon. Two

which features a wooded hillside garden with many shade
plantings and unique touches of Donna’s artisitc talents. Go
west on Water St to College Dr, turn on Fifth Ave. Follow Fifth Ave straight over the bridge

Historic Bus Tour of Decorah — Unwind as you step aboard this 1-hour guided bus
tour of stunning Decorah. Explore hidden treasures and hear stories from incredibly
entertaining locals. This tour is sure to delight your sight! Tours departing Friday and
Saturday at noon, 1:15, 2:30 and 3:45 from the Main Information Center. Admission
is free but tickets are required. Sign up at the Main Information Center.

Special Music and Art Program for Kids-Friday 2 p.m. and 3:15 p.m
Friday and Saturday throughout the day
“Songs With and Without Words” for ages 4 and up (adults will love it, too) This lively program for children unites
music, art, and stories: hear the violin’s strings imitate nature, from frogs to foul; next, hear the violinist’s virtuosic
accompaniment to the story of Ferdinand, the flower-smelling bull; and then “The Perfect Pig” brings everyone
together -- perfectly! Programs begin at the Porter House music room, 401 W. Broadway. Free admission; all kids and
parents invited. After the performance, Porter House staff will accompany kids to Canopy 4 on Water Street (in front
of Vesterheim), where ArtHaus staff will be on hand from 3 to 4:30 to help the kids create their own Perfect Pigs.
“The Perfect Pig” was composed by Decorah native Philip Wharton, who will be at the concerts to help tell the
stories and to perform on his violin, joining peformers James Ellis, Andrew Whitfield, Kristi Carlson, and Marjorie
Wharton. The concert features violin, cello, piano, and voice. Co-sponsored by Porter House Museum and ArtHaus

About the Entertainers
Howard Amundson, An Apple a Day and Other Old Home Remedies—
From Minnetonka, Minn., and born in a poor area of Northern Minnesota
after the Depression, Howard entertains with his memories of home
medical remedies.
ArtHaus—Decorah’s home for visual, performing and literary arts, provides quality arts experiences, and free or low-cost events through the
sponsorship of Decorah Regional Art Council. Hands-on visual art activities and face painting will be provided throughout the festival weekend.
Ethan Bjelland— will teach you “Norwegian in a Nutshell” in a way that is
easy and enjoyable for all.
Bunad Show—Scandinavian Folk Costume show featuring a beautiful
collection of authentic Norwegian costumes.
Jim Busta Polka Band—Jim Busta Band has performed for 27 years world
wide. Come to listen and dance to this award winning polka band.
Celebration Iowa Singers and Jazz
Band—The Celebration Iowa program,
headquartered at Luther College,
strives to reflect the quality of Iowa
high school music programs in this
educational, performance and serviceoriented summer music experience.
The action-packed show includes song,
dance and jazz band favorites.
Commonweal Theatre Company— Performing scenes
from their 2010 Ibsen production of John Gabriel
Borkman. This theatre company from Lanesboro, Minn.,
is the only theatre company in the United States to
annually perform works by the Norwegian playwright
Henrik Ibsen.
CW Von Arx and the Highway 3— CW is the
lead guitar player and co-founder of CW Von
Arx & the Highway 3. The Highway 3 consists
of his twin sisters, Olivia on bass guitar and
vocals, Maria on drums and vocals, and his
dad, Chris, on rhythm guitar, piano and lead
vocals.The band is 100% family, very unique,
and fun to watch. They do rockabilly music
from Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Waylon
Jennings, Elvis Presley, Stray Cats and more.
Dancing Reindeer Herd— Established
in 1985, this 50 plus herd from Milltown,
Wisconsin, is one of the largest in the
lower 48 states of the United States. They
have been in New York City’s Christmas
pageant and in the 1994 movie Miracle on
34th Street. Visit these friendly reindeer and
their owners, who will wear Sami costumes.
Kyle Elsbernd—Norwegian folk, pop and rock songs. Songs sung in
Norwegian and accompanied by acoustic guitar.
Marc Frana—One man band from Charles City – Great entertainer! Sung
in Norwegian.
Good Friends—When four musicians gathered together weekly to play
music, they brought together elements of classic country, old-time music,
gospel and bluegrass. They soon became “Good Friends.”
Foot-Notes—Legendary four piece
Norwegian folk band from Decorah. The
Foot-Notes have been invited to play at
The Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
this fall.
Tom Gibbons Family— A terrific family
band that has been playing in all parts of
Wisconsin. Daughters Haley and Brenna
join their Dad, Tom in their first Nordic
Fest appearance. They have a great
sound and will be sure to entertain you and your family.
Iowegians—A “One Man Band” featuring the Norwegian style Chromatic
Accordion.
Kracker Jacks Drumline—Located in Waite Park, MN (next to St. Cloud),
we’re a group of professional
drummers that combine
comedy with precision marching
and playing and have been
entertaining crowds around
Minnesota and the Midwest since
1983, and have twice played
Mardi Gras in New Orleans and
once at the Greenwich Village Halloween parade in Manhattan. Though
the bulk of our performances are summer parades, we have done holiday
parades, St. Patrick’s Day parades, corporate events, business expos,
football game homecomings, winter drumline show intermissions, and in
one instance – a wedding!
Koenig and Sons—Verne Koenig of Decorah and his sons, Gary of
Broomfield, CO, Jody of Decorah, and Kelly of Wanakee, WI play and sing
old- time country, country gospel, and bluegrass music.
Roger & Mandy LaBarge Show—is
like going to see Garrison Keillor,
only the entire show is storytelling
songs. Roger’s stories are partly truth
& partly fiction as you have maybe
heard in a song before.
Luren Singers—Founded in 1868,
the oldest Norwegian-American
male chorus in continuous existence
in the US singing Norwegian national songs and popular American
repetoire.
Maritza— Repertoire includes hauntingly beautiful melodies forged in
the passionate history of Europe and Russia, lively Jewish wedding dance
horas and frailachs, Gypsy (Romany) music, and twisting rhythmic line
dance tunes from Bulgaria, Romania, Macedonia and Greece. Maritza
features: Decorah area musicians Pine Wilson on accordion; Ann Streufert
on violin, viola, flute, and percussion; Rob van Tyn on oboe, saxophones,
and percussion; and Bill Musser on acoustic bass. Minneapolis based
drum instructor Will Kemperman rounds out the ensemble on drums and
percussion.
Midlife Crisis—Band from West Union featuring
music from the 50s and 60s, classic rock from the
70s and 80s and a little country and new rock.
Midlife Crisis’ song list appeals to both late baby
boomers and younger music lovers and includes
music from artists like Lynard Skynard, ZZ Top,
Eric Clapton, Eagles, Dire straits, BTO, The Beatles,
The Beach Boys and even Nickleback.
About the Entertainers
Mike McAbee—Local singer/songwriter who plays up
and down the Mississippi River Valley from Guttenberg
to Winona, and throughout the Midwest. McAbee had
national recognition on the syndicated radio show, “Car
Talk” performing his original song “20 Cars”.

the 35th year. A Nordic Fest favorite.
Accompanied by their own orchestra.
Northern Lights Women’s Chorale—A
65 voice women’s chorus begun in 1996
with members from Decorah and the
surrounding area. Conducted by Jane Kolarich and accompanied by Linda
Gjerdrum, the chorale enjoys singing two concerts a year and providing
musical entertainment for various community events. The title of their
concert for Nordic Fest is: WOMEN SING!
Sharon Rossman—storytelling during a program titled Children of SamiLand
Scandium—Scandium members
Amy Boxrud (vocals, fiddle), Les
LaCroix (guitar, vocals), Glenn Lee
(accordion), Gordon Oschwald
(bass) and Ruth Anne Rasmusson
(fiddle) were brought together
by a weekly Nordic jam session in
Northfield , Minnesota. Scandium
formed in the fall of 2006, in a desire
to explore contemporary Scandinavian folk music in a smaller group
setting. Scandium often begins with a Nordic folk tune--sometimes old,
sometimes new--but soon find themselves “coloring outside the lines,”
allowing other folk influences to infuse their arrangements.

Norwegian Old Tyme Orchestra—Playing your favorite marches and big
band tunes.
Lee Przybylski—14, narrows his eyes as he begins one of his new tricks,
which involves tossing the yo-yo off the string between his legs and
catching it again. The toy jumps off the string and through his legs, then
‘thud.’ The yo-yo hits the ground. After picking up the hobby two years
ago, Przybylski has mastered enough tricks that he’s expanding beyond
the church basement performance. He recently dazzled audiences at
Sturgis Falls and has been asked to perform at Artapalooza this fall. He’s
advanced to the point where he can’t learn anything new from yo-yoers
in the Cedar Valley, so he’s traveled to the Mall of America in Minnesota
to watch regional competitions and pick up ideas for new tricks. There’s
no questioning his love for the game. He owns 28 yo-yos, and picked up
juggling to improve his hand-eye coordination. He’s even read a book that
discusses the similarities between quantum mechanics and yo-yoing.
Ricky Rowray—Outstanding balloon artistry. Ricky started to learn magic
at age 19 and has performed throughout the Midwestern United States
for over 30 years. [email protected].
Rochester Area Accordions—The Rochester Area Accordion Band is
available to play music from around-the-world or special ethnic music at
request – polkas, waltzes, two-stops and schottishces. The band which
numbers from four to twelve accordionists at each performance and
one guitarist was formed in 1998. The participants live in seven different
communities in the Rochester Area. They share their music at the
Rochester International Festival, Mayo Clinic, senior living centers, ethnic
events, private parties and nursing homes. The goal is to keep accordion
music alive in the South eastern section of Minnesota.
Dag Rossman, Timeless Tales of the Ancient
Norse—From Decorah, Dag presents a
combination of traditional myths and original
stories set in the nine worlds of Norse mythology
from his new collection The Dragonseeker Saga.
Dag will also present Aurora - Rivers of Light in
the Sky DVD showing of the Northern Lights.
The Northern Lights have inspired mystics
and storytellers for centuries and led modern
scientists on a fascinating search for the sources of the auroral display.
It shares the myths, legends, and science behind one of nature’s most
beautiful night-bond mysteries.
Sam Shoults—From Knox City, Missouri,
Sam presents his Viking Ship Replica,
with which he has had many adventures,
including sailing down the Mississippi
River.
Skjaldborg—Skjaldborg means “fortress
of shields,” and this group from Elk
Horn, Iowa, will present their Viking
encampment and will entertain throughout the
day with full Viking combat demonstrations.

2009 Nordic Fest Grand Marshal - Mildred Jacobson
Mildred has been a resident of Winneshiek County her entire life. She comes from a strong Norwegian
background.
Mildred believes strongly in being a public servant. She has devoted her time to many organizations
including Physical Therapy Board secretary (51 years); Winneshiek County American Cancer Society
Board and Rely for Life; Russel Cemetery Board secretary (31 years); Secretary for Washington Prairie
Church (25 years); Aase Haugen Auxiliary Board (18 years); Daffodil Days; Nordic Fest and the United
Methodist Church.

2009 Nordic Fest Flag Recipient - Renda Sacquitne
Renda has been a part of Nordic Fest for years. She had been a member of the Nordic Fest Board in numerous
positions, including President in 2005. Renda is always willing to help out in many aspects for Nordic Fest such as
selling programs and buttons at opening ceremonies, helping in food preparations or anywhere she is needed.
Renda is a worthy recipient of the flag for the 2009 Fest.
The Nordic Fest Board thanks her for her hard work and dedication and for helping make Nordic Fest one of Iowa’s
premier festivals.
