Nordic Fest 2015 Honorees
2015 Nordic Fest Grand Marshal— Elizabeth Lorentzen
Elizabeth began teaching in the Decorah Community
School District in the fall of 1971 and recently retired in the
spring of 2014 after 42 years of service to the district at the
elementary, middle, and high school levels. Included in her
curriculum were tours and historic home drawings of the
Broadway Historic District, study of traditional architecture
of the log buildings at Vesterheim, and the study of the
Greek and Roman architecture elements of the county
courthouse. Needless to say, her curriculum was very
inclusive and driven by the history of art and architecture
found right here in our community. She was also the
founder of a puppet troupe comprised of elementary
through high school students that performed Norwegian
folk tales with self-constructed rod puppets in traditional
costumes for 15 straight Nordic Fests from 1974 to 1989. She also edited a book, “Vera
Harris’ Old Decorah Houses and Their Stories,” and is currently working to complete text
and illustrations for a book on architecture for children, which features local Decorah
historic houses as well. Elizabeth has been giving tours of the downtown and historic
district architecture for over twenty years. She has collaborated with Ed Epperly on
establishing two historic trails complete with tour signage; one in the Broadway Historic
District and the other featuring Decorah’s historic downtown. The elaborate signs each
contain self-researched information, written text, and vintage photographs to illustrate
the tours. In total, there will be 7 signs along the historic district trail and 24 signs along
with 4 kiosks on the downtown trail in place by the end of this summer. We are pleased
to honor Elizabeth with the Nordic Fest Grand Marshal status for 2015 and thank her for
her continued work showcasing the historical value of our beloved community. Grand
Marshals are selected for their commitment to the larger Decorah community.
This year’s Nordic Fest button, t-shirts, and program designs
were created with help from local artist Lauren Bonney
(laurenbonney.com). Inspired by the work of illustrators and
sculptors Brian & Wendy Froud and concept artist Mary Blair,
the design for the theme “Dancing with the Trolls” captures a
young troll couple as they dance the schottische. For more trolls,
gnomes, nisse, and other creatures from folklore and fairytales,
stop by Lauren’s booth at the Nordic Fest Craft Show!
Celebrating their 25th anniversary, the
Decorah based Scandinavian American
old time dance band, Foot-Notes, has
been selected as the 2015 Nordic Fest Flag
Recipient. Foot-Notes fiddler Beth Hoven
Rotto, guitarist Jon Rotto, and bassist Bill
Musser are best known for carrying on a
40-year tradition of old time dances in the
1911 Highlandville schoolhouse north of
Decorah. John Goodin has filled in with the
group for many years and joins the group
on mandolin harmonies this summer. A
wildly popular local phenomenon, FootNotes dances attract participants of all ages
and backgrounds from the surrounding
community. The band has been recognized
regionally and nationally for playing and preserving old-time music drawn from the wells
of Norwegian and Scandinavian traditions. They have produced four albums, First Steps,
Highlandville Dance, Decorah Waltz, and My Father Was a Fiddler. The group represented
the State of Iowa at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife in Washington, D.C.
in 1994 and was invited to return to D.C. to play at the John F. Kennedy Center for
the Performing Arts in the Center’s “Millenium Stage - Masters of Tradition” series in
2008. Foot-Notes have entertained the evening crowds of Nordic Fest for the past
twenty years with their jam-packed street dances. Their performances bring out the true
Scandinavian fun in all that are in attendance. Nordic Fest would not be complete without
the Foot-Notes and we are truly humbled to honor the band this year in conjunction with
their 25th anniversary and our “Dancing with the Trolls” theme. We hope to see you all
join the Foot-Notes Saturday night for The World’s Largest Schottische. Register online at
eventbrite.com. Flag Recipients are selected for their commitment to Nordic Fest.

Ja, vi elsker dette landet (Yes we love this country)
Ja, vi elsker dette landet
som det stiger frem,
furet, vaerbitt, over vannet,
med de tusen hjem.
Elsker, elsker det og tenker
på vår far og mor
og den saganatt som senker
drømme på vår jord.
og den saganatt som senker
drømme på vår jord.
Yes, we love this country
as it rises forth,
rugged, weathered, above the sea,
with the thousands of homes.
Love, love it and think
of our father and mother
and the saga night that sends
sends dreams to our earth.
