Cyndy`s Meeting Notes - Mother Lode Goldhounds
1 March 2016 El Presidente Mike Cyndy’s Meeting Notes Mike started the meeting by asking the first time visitors to stand and tell us where they came from. We had 4 or 5 people that stood and were Welcomed by the membership! Thanks for being so cordial to the newcomers and Welcome all Newcomers! Mike had also brought in vases with a rose bud and other pretties in them for all of the women for Valentine’s Day! Thank You so much Mike! We truly appreciate the thought. Next Ray Dodd’s told everyone about the event at the Mt. Vernon Memorial Park that was going to happen on February 15th. And asked the Nuggets to come out and help teach gold panning. Then Mike invited me, Cyndy Burchard, to talk about our results for Elijah’s Jar in December. And boy did we do great things for Elijah’s Jar! That information is in the February newsletter. Cyndy also told everyone about the Goldhounds’ jackets. They are black windbreakers, with our young miner emblem gold ink on the back. However, the ink on the back isn’t real solid, so it looks like a tarnish finish. They are $45 and can still be ordered. If you are interested contact Cyndy. Cyndy then asked for anyone interested in helping with the security positions at the Gold Summit in Placerville, at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds on April 16 & 17 to sign up on the volunteer signup sheet, with the position they want and the time. Along with their shirt size. (For the free T-shirt from ICMJ for helping them out with this event.) There are still some openings so if you are interested, please contact Cyndy at [email protected] or 530-346-9481. 2 Mike then talked a little on his latest metal detecting outing. One of the guys found picks, shovels, pry bars and crevassing tools from the 1800’s! Seems he found a cache where the old time miners used to store their tools. Then he told us of a $20 gold piece that Tim Boughton found. It was dated 1875! Mike then introduced our guest speaker for the evening, Scott Harn and his wife Sally, from ICMJ magazine. Scott brought up two topics. The first was the 2016 Gold Summit coming up in April (16 & 17), at the El Dorado Fairgrounds in Placerville. There are 2 other happenings attached to this event on the 15th & 17th. They are held at Gleeson Dry Diggings and The Happy Bide Mine. However these days are already full. There will be 2 days of lectures and a lot of vendors at the fairgrounds on the 16th & 17th. (The lecture schedules will be later in the newsletter, for your information). The Goldhounds have been given the job of security. So again, if you are interested in helping with this job, please contact Cyndy. Scott then spoke on the subject of the Mining Districts. How they came about, how they were set up, and how they work. In 1849 the mining rules became accepted by and for the self-regulation of the miners. This is what led up to our 1872 mining law. In 1953 the creation of the Mining Districts came into being. And our Mining Districts have been allowed to fall into disarray since then. We are now trying to re-establish and organize the districts once again. You can find the Bill that Scott and others wrote to send to the Congress on Mining Districts at www.MMAC.org . The best place to find information and the original by-laws for traditional mining summary are mining museums and the MMAC website. Here is the link for Traditional Mining Districts in California: http://www.westernmininghistory.com/articles/206/page1 . Find your District and see if the Counsel has been set up there yet. Scott recommends that you go to the MMAC website at www.MMAC.org to find the Mining Counsel for any questions about the rules, regulations and other information on how to organize the District in your area if there isn’t one already set up for your area. Mining Districts cannot be created new entities, or any 2 put together. They must be the same as the original district set in the 1800’s. The rules for each District are similar, but still different for each set of situations in that particular District. This will be explained more on the MMAC website, where you can ask questions. Very interesting and informative talk, Scott, Thank You so much for coming and talking to us! If you would like to subscribe to ICJM magazine, you can look it up online at www.ICMJ.com or use the subscription sheet that is later in the newsletter. There are 4 ways to subscribe, online, by phone, fax, or use the form included in this newsletter. After the break, we had our drawing. I believe we had at least one claim jumper!
