STYLE NOMAD #1: Manolo Blahnik
A
s the creator of to-die-for shoes and the head
of a global fashion empire, Manolo Blahnik
knows a thing or two about style. Hoping
to pick up a few sartorial tips, Pulse asked the man
himself to share his opinions on topics ranging from
bespoke suits and Spanish embroidery to Hermès
diaries and ladies tights.
Mr Blahnik, arguably the world’s finest
shoemaker, certainly the most famous, never intended
to make his fortune in footwear. Having studied art
as a young man, he had hoped to follow in the steps
of Cecil Beaton, Oliver Messel and Rex Whistler by
NB Pulse_Issue 1_London
becoming a set designer. But that all changed when, in
1970 he met Diana Vreeland, then editor of American
Vogue, to show her drawings of his theatrical designs.
As the meeting came to a close he brought out a
selection of sketches of shoes he had been designing
and without a second’s hesitation Vreeland told him
to ditch the sets and do the shoes. And so, a legend
was born.
In 1971 Blahnik created his first pair of shoes for
the debut show of another member of the swinging
London set, fashion designer Ossie Clark. They were
green and red with cherries growing off a vine that
twisted up the ankle. Unexpectedly the heels, which
were moulded from soft rubber, buckled under the
heat of the lights and the weight of the models,
sending the girls bouncing down the runway. It didn’t
matter. The fashionistas such as Bianca Jagger, who
sat in the audience, recognised brilliance when they
saw it and Blahnik gained a legion of devoted fans.
Today Manolo Blahnik has boutiques in New York,
Madrid, Paris, Las Vegas, Moscow and Seoul, and his
shoes are sold in Barneys and Neiman Marcus. His
sole London outpost remains where it opened in 1973.
Tucked halfway down Old Church Street a narrow
corridor connects two tiny jewel-box rooms where on
any given day the likes of Sarah Jessica Parker or Tilda
Swinton might be found sitting on the banquettes,
trying on a £500 pair of shoes. Outside, timid teenage
tourists regularly peer in through the chicken wire
(installed for security, not to foil cameras as is
commonly thought) and dream of the day they will be
women enough – and rich enough – to venture inside
and sample Manolo Blahnik’s beautiful wares.
Manolo shares his thoughts on…
Suits: One day I was watching a Cary Grant
movie and I fell in love with the suit he was wearing.
I discovered that it was by Anderson & Sheppard
and I have bought my suits from there ever since.
Coats: I have always worn a Burberry trench.
The one I have now is 15 years old and I tried to
replace it recently, but when I went to the shop they
told me they didn’t make that model anymore and
that it wasn’t modern! I stormed out and now I just
keep cleaning the one I have.
Shoes: I have always had my factories make classic
Oxford styles for me. They used to sell my men’s shoes
at Joseph, but now they’re only for my closest friends.
I don’t really like men’s shoes anyway – they can be
so boring!
Books: John Sandoe is my absolute favourite
book shop. They always manage to find exactly what
I’m looking for and the staff have impeccable taste.
Flowers: I’ve been using Pulbrook & Gould for
flowers for ever. They know me, and my tastes, and
will deliver the things that I love anywhere in the world.
Treatment: If I had time, I’d get a pedicure,
but that is as much of my body as I’d want a stranger
to touch.

THE EXTRAS
Hair: Mr. Heart at Moss Bros in Covent Garden
has been doing my hair for decades. I glue it back
with Tenax by Roger & Gallet. It was discontinued
so I bought up all the old stock!
Global Style...
USA: L.L. Bean’s boat and tote bags with the zip
top are the only bags I’ll carry. I have dozens of them,
all with navy straps of course! I buy all my underwear
at Banana Republic because they make the best
cotton boxer shorts.
Madrid: Madrid has the best designer shops in
the world, but I prefer to wander around El Rastro,
the Sunday flea market, where you can find anything
from old textiles to furniture.
Gonzapur and La Casa de los Chales are two shops
which stock wonderful embroidery. There are very few
families still making the traditional matador’s traje de
luces – or suit of light – embroidery which I occasionally
use on shoes. I also like to give fans or bags embellished
with the embroidery as presents. Mantequerías Bravo
is the best for deli products like Jabugo ham.
Milan: I used to love many stores here, but they’ve
all been turned into Gucci and Prada! Now I just go
to Bici or the Four Seasons for great meals.
Paris: Once a year I have to get to Hermès in Paris
to get my diary pages, although I almost had a heart
attack this year because they changed the format of
the pages! I also always stop at Diptyque because my
world would be a smelly place without their beautiful
candles. I use them everywhere and at the moment
my favourite scents are Figuier and Oyédo.
Moscow: I love Pushkin, a restaurant which
serves all my favourite food, especially the puddings.
Seeing Catherine the Great’s jewels inspired one of
my collections – they were so beautiful I would have
liked to buy them. I also like the fact that to visit any
major museum in Moscow you have to wear felt boots
over your shoes. That prompted me to use Russian
felt in last winter’s collection.
Style: To me, style is about individuality. It comes
from confidence and being comfortable with yourself.
If you consider style icons throughout time – Cecil
Beaton, Anna Piaggi, Uma Thurman – they are not
trend followers. Too many young people today don’t
know what style is and they look like copies of one
another. Style is about accentuating your own
personality through your clothes and accessories.
For Him: If you indulge in one thing in life,
it should be a custom-made suit! An off-the-peg suit
will never fit you perfectly but a bespoke suit will
always look wonderful.
For Her: Tights should never be worn with open
toe shoes and tights with runs are just plain rude.
Also, know what looks good on you. Mini-skirts may
come in and out of fashion but they’re not for everyone.
Packing: I believe the lighter the better. I only
carry tote bags and if anything becomes too

cumbersome, I leave it behind or send it home. I always
pack my shoes in soft shoe bags.
Shoe Care: This depends on the fabric. For
leather, a bit of natural shoe cream will erase marks
and stains regardless of the colour and bring back
lustre. If you’re in a pinch while travelling, a white
pencil eraser will remove scuffs from almost any
fabric whether it’s suede, satin or leather. It’s magic!
As for what to do in the rain; get out of it! But when
you’re at the beach, just take your shoes off!
Etiquette: I have a cell phone and I use it, but
never at the ballet. Or God forbid, when dining
with friends!
Shoes: My favourite shoe for Autumn/Winter
06 is definitely the Dukessa which has cropped
off toes and makes anyone look as if they have the
tiniest feet in the world.

SEMIPERMANENT
LASH
EXTENSIONS
They’re not so swift but so worth
it! Principally there are three
contenders in this field: 3D,
Jinnylash and Lavishlash. The
3D system for a heavier, “mascaracoated” looking lash, Jinnylash
for a lighter effect and Lavish
for altogether a shorter, finer
alternative – but unless combined
with the others, is not worth
opting for.
Need to know: The first 48 hours
after the initial application are
critical – no water or tears. Semipermanent lashes are a high
maintenance commitment in terms
of time and cost.
N.B. To remove lash extensions,
use an oil-based eye make-up
remover and finely shaped cosmetic
cotton buds – available from most
beauty halls and pharmacists.
EYETEC BY SUE MARSH
The couture of lash extensions.
This is all about the skill of the
technician. The procedure
is tailored to each individual’s
eye size, shape, colouring and
lifestyle. A combination all of
brands, including Eyetec’s own
recently developed range are
used to enhance both the top
and lower lashes. The look is
glamorous and striking. In our
opinion this is far and away
the best method available.

perms and semi-permanent make
up. House calls by arrangement.

WILDE-PEDIQUE BY BEAUTY
CONCEPTS INTERNATIONAL
Products designed specifically for
clients on medication or with badly
damaged nails. An unprecedented
range of treatments, developed by
pharmacists in Germany. Acrylester
resins form the basis of the extensive
range of non-damaging, antifungalnail systems, including Dermique
(the only hypoallergenic sculpturing
gel on the market), self-levelling
products and light-cured fibreglass.
No aggressive chemicals and
more than just a pre-mixed acrylic,
this system uses a non-porous gel
that allows natural nails to grow
normally and prevents bacteria
from developing. Maintenance
and infills involve buffing only. No
harsh acetone solutions, as used
with other types of nail systems.

We’re hooked on this famed New

physically stimulating, spiritually
enriching and an amazing workout!
Beautiful centre in Kensal Rise – the
new “north Notting Hill” – which is
becoming more gentrified by the
