Mystery of the Lost
Shadow Boys
Debbie Bishop
I
n the gnarly battle between a fairywitch and her army of
dragons vs the fairies of the realm—over the identity of the
young heir to the throne of Fairydom—the evil witch won.
The fairies kept their secret, but all the young boys were captured and are now forced to work the witch's mines until the
name of the new ruler is revealed. The witch is next in line, so
obviously, even if the boys knew who the lucky dude was, they
wouldn't give him up, to be killed. An ancient prophecy foretells of these secrets and more, including the destiny of one
fairy, who, when she comes of age, could possibly break the
wicked spells over fairydom and save the lost Shadow Boys. Her
name is Chloe Pillywiggin, and the problem is, she is clueless,
about her role, the boys, the prophecies, all of it. So now, deep
within the hot mines of the mantlerealm, under the menacing
guard of dragons, trolls and Oddizens, the lost Shadow Boys
must prepare to somehow save themselves.
Debbie Bishop lives in Los Angeles, California. She is a
writer, producer, publisher and owner of production, marketing, publishing and design firm, Left Field where Bishop also
creates, develops and produces film, television, videogames,

Counting Our Way
to Maine
Maggie Smith
F
irst published in 1995 by Orchard Books, Counting
Our Way to Maine is one of Down East Books’s most
requested titles. Now brought back by popular demand,
this book takes “one baby, two dogs, and three bicycles”
on a journey from the big city to Maine’s seacoast.
Objects packed for the trip and things seen along the
way are all happily counted, finishing in a shining finale
as the family tallies 20 fireflies found during their last
evening in Maine. School Library Journal notes, “More
than a counting book, this lively...story will be a welcome
addition to anyone’s bookshelf.” Booklist writes, “...this
also features the most satisfying of family values: love.”
Maggie Smith is the illustrator of more than 20 children’s books, some of which she also authored. Her previously published books include One Naked Baby (2007),
Paisley (2004) and The Best Ever Cat (2001). The multitalented Smith is also a fabric artist who creates and sews
dolls and small toys for children. She lives in Austin,
Texas.

Lighthouse Lullaby
Kelly Paul Briggs
I
magine a snowy winter evening on a distant island a
hundred years ago. Despite the icy cold, the lighthouse
keeper and his family are warm and secure, their home a
bright center of warmth within a vast, dark bay. How
comforting it must have been for a young child to know
that, all around the island, every creature was settling in
for the night: the farm animals in the barn, the wild creatures in their burrows, and he himself in a warm bed,
watched over by loving parents. In soothing cadences
and exquisitely rendered illustrations, Kelly Paul Briggs
carries readers to that wonderful moment when it’s time
to pull up the covers and look forward to a contented
night’s sleep and a bright new day.
Kelly Paul Briggs is an artist who lives in Camden,
Maine. This is her second children’s book.

The Train to Maine
Jamie Spencer
Illustrated by Rebecca Reed
The Witch of Beaver
Creek Mine
Rosemarie Nervelle
T
he Witch of Beaver Creek Mine is a fictional young
adult adventure story that takes place in Nova Scotia
in the 1940s. It is woven around the lives of simple people, their superstitious beliefs, and old-fashioned family
values. Readers will encounter Old Maude, a disfigured
and much maligned and misunderstood Micmac medicine woman who lives in an abandoned gold mine, as
well as lumberjacks, hobos, and several village children
whose adventures lead them to Maude and to an eventual understanding of her natural healing powers and
goodness.
Rosemarie Nervelle grew up in a small Nova Scotia
mining town, and draws on her own experiences and
mixed ethnic heritage for this story. Her poems have
been published in the Village Voice and the Goose River
Anthology. Nervelle lives in Camden, Maine, for most of
the year, with summer sojourns in Nova Scotia.
T
he Train to Maine captures all the excitement of a
train ride to a much-anticipated vacation destination.
With a pace as lively as that of a moving train, the
rhyming text portrays a child’s journey from the bustle of
Boston to the delights of Down East Maine.
Jamie Spencer is a freelance medical writer and editor who has long summered in Maine. The real “train to
Maine,” Amtrak’s Downeaster, passes daily through her
hometown of Winchester, Massachusetts. Rebecca Reed
is an illustrator based in Reston, Virginia. She received her
master of fine arts degree at Florida State University and
also studied art at the Cité Universitaire de Paris. Her art
has been in many shows, and she has received numerous
awards throughout her 15-year career as a freelance
artist, including the First Place Art Award at the Annual
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators MidYear Conference Art Display Competition in 2002.

Boatyard Ducklings
Heather Austin
W
ith pencil illustrations and a storyline about the protection of ducklings, Boatyard Ducklings is bound to
call to mind Robert McCloskey’s classic Make Way for
Ducklings. Far from being merely imitative, however, this
tale of a little girl’s love and care for young creatures has
a magic all its own. Here author and illustrator Heather
Austin memorably tells and beautifully pictures a true
story about the young daughter of a boatyard owner.
When the girl discovers a mallard hen’s nest in a dinghy,
she is filled with delight. The girl befriends the duck and,
when the young ones hatch, she becomes their protector.
A Maine native, Heather Austin is the author of two
children’s books. A graduate of Gould Academy in
Bethel, Maine, Austin received her bachelor of fine arts
degree from the Rhode Island School of Design. She
spent ten years teaching art in the Holden and
Eddington, Maine, schools. She now resides with her
husband, two children, and two cats in Dallas, Georgia.

Rabbit Go Camping
Susan Meyer

H
ow does a young child cope with being excited but
frightened? Matthew wants to go camping but so
many things about the experience seem scary to him.
What if there are lions in the woods? How will he stay
warm if it’s too cold? What will he do without his nightlight? Pretending his toy rabbit is nervous about these
things, Matthew poses questions to his mother on Tall
Rabbit’s behalf. His mother’s loving answers provide
Matthew and Tall Rabbit with all the reassurance a
youngster could need.
Susan Meyer is a professor of English at Wellesley
College. Educated at Johns Hopkins University, UCLA,
and Yale University, she also won a Bunting Fellowship to
Radcliffe College. Meyer is a frequent contributor to children’s magazines, including Cricket and Ladybug. Meyer
lives in Sherborn, Massachusetts. Amy Huntington is an
artist and illustrator who resides with her husband and
two children in Williston, Vermont. Her work has
appeared in Vermont Life magazine. She is the author and
illustrator of the 2001 book, One Monday, and the illustrator of two Down East Books, Grandma Drove the
Garbage Truck (2006) and Seagull Sam (2007).

I Like To Learn
Box Set: Alphabet,
Numbers, Colors, &
Opposites
Alex A. Lluch
Illustrated by David Defenbaugh
T
he US Census Bureau estimates that over 8 million children enroll in nursery school or kindergarten every year.
The educational success of these children depends largely
on their knowledge of the alphabet, numbers, colors, and opposites. The I Like to Learn Box Set teaches children these fundamental skills in a fun yet effective way. This beautiful set
includes four hand-illustrated board books. Each book features
bright, cheerful paintings to help young children learn these
important concepts.
Zoo Clues uses colorful depictions of animals to teach the alphabet. Each letter is featured with an animal “clue,” such as a
tail or a hoof, with the next page revealing the corresponding
animal, whose name begins with that letter.
The main character in Hungry Chameleon teaches counting
skills as he ventures through the jungle in search of flies. The
chameleon encounters a series of creatures in groups of one
through ten until he finds the ten flies he’s looking for.
Curious Penguin is a heartwarming tale that teaches children
colors. In this story a little penguin knows only a world of black
and white until a rainbow-colored feather falls from the sky.
After seeing this magnificent feather, the penguin wishes that
he could be colorful as well. In addition to teaching the different colors, this story promotes self-esteem and acceptance.
Amazing Bugs uses curious critters and rhyming text to encourage an understanding of opposites. Every page displays a
pair of opposites, such as HEAVY and LIGHT, while the following page shows another pair of opposites, LEFT and RIGHT.
Babies and toddlers will be visually stimulated by the whimsical illustrations, while older children will enjoy reading each
story. As they learn their ABCs, 123s, colors, and opposites, children will also come to recognize some intriguing creatures!
Alex A. Lluch is the author of titles that have sold more than
2 million books in subjects such as weddings, health, children’s
and babies. He lives in San Diego, California. David Defenbaugh has a BA in Fine Arts and has illustrated several children’s
books. He resides in San Diego, California.
