Volume 7, Issue 11 November Events Tuesday, November 2 Remember to Vote Rev. Gary R. Blakeman, Minister November 2010 Pastor’s Perspective “Standing On the Promises” A story is told of a young girl whose family was vacationing in Florida. She went down to the beach with her raft and decided to play in the surf. Not being familiar with ocean currents, the young girl was unaware of the dangerous unSunday, November 6 dertow; as she floated on her raft she was slowly carried out into the deep. Looking up she Daylight Savings Time Ends noticed she had drifted far from the beach. She yelled for help but no one heard or noticed. Set Your Clocks Back The family, thinking she was with a friend, did not miss their daughter till several hours had Thanksgiving Food Collection passed. After combing the beach they concluded she must have been carried out by the curStewardship/Pledge Sunday rent. The Lifeguard station was notified and a search was begun. Nightfall came without any “Standing on the Promises” sign of the girl. All night the parents worried, wondering if their daughter could survive a night in the ocean on a small raft; they prayed the Lord would keep her safe. At dawn, the search was resumed with the Dad insisting on going along. For several hours the Coast Guard Thursday, November 11 searched before a small raft was spotted from the air, the location was forwarded to the Coast Veterans Day Guard. As the boat approached the area the father ran to the front of the boat and strained his eyes to see, there was the raft and there was his daughter; safe. The Coast Guard transported them back to the nearest Lifeguard Station. Local reporters flocked to the location. As the Sunday, November 14 All Church Thanksgiving Dinner daughter was being carried off the boat by her dad a reporter asked the young girl, “Where you afraid out there all by yourself?” Her reply was a simple, “No.” The reporter followed up, “How Thanksgiving Ingathering could you not be afraid?” She looked at her dad and replied, “Because my Dad always promised me if I was ever lost he would never stop looking until he found me; I knew he would Friday, November 19 come.” 9:30am—6:00pm Saturday, November 20 9:30am—6:00pm Winter Craft Bazaar Monday, November 22 3:00pm—7:00pm Community Blood Drive Longview Chapel Thursday, November 25 Thanksgiving Day Sunday, November 28 1st Sunday of Advent Hanging of the Greens For the past several Sundays we have been remembering and embracing the promises God has made. Promises that strengthen us and help us face the fears that often invade our lives. God has given us so many promises; promises we can stake our lives on. His greatest promise was to seek and save the lost. How we love the image of the Good Shepherd going out and finding the lost sheep. On November 7th, Stewardship Sunday, we will have the opportunity to respond to God’s love by pledging ourselves to His work through Longview Chapel. Let us take seriously our opportunity to dedicate our Time, Talent and Treasure to the great cause of Christ. Promises are not always easy to keep, but we follow through when our motive is love. God so loved us He allowed His own Son to suffer for our benefit. “He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole, and by his bruises we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) Our giving is in response to the love and promise God gave and kept. Thanksgiving Sack Collection Ends: November 14th will be the final Sunday we collect Thanksgiving sacks for the needy in Lee’s Summit. In order for the food to be delivered to needy families by Thanksgiving we must have them to Lee’s Summit Social Services by November 15th.
