Pastor’s Perspective
“Standing On the Promises”
A story is told of a young girl whose family was vacationing in Florida.
She went down to the beach with her raft and decided to play in the
surf. Not being familiar with ocean currents, the young girl was unaware of the dangerous unSunday, November 6
dertow; as she floated on her raft she was slowly carried out into the deep. Looking up she
Daylight Savings Time Ends noticed she had drifted far from the beach. She yelled for help but no one heard or noticed.
Set Your Clocks Back
The family, thinking she was with a friend, did not miss their daughter till several hours had
Thanksgiving Food Collection passed. After combing the beach they concluded she must have been carried out by the curStewardship/Pledge Sunday rent. The Lifeguard station was notified and a search was begun. Nightfall came without any
“Standing on the Promises” sign of the girl. All night the parents worried, wondering if their daughter could survive a night
in the ocean on a small raft; they prayed the Lord would keep her safe. At dawn, the search
was resumed with the Dad insisting on going along. For several hours the Coast Guard

eyes to see, there was the raft and there was his daughter; safe. The Coast Guard transported
them back to the nearest Lifeguard Station. Local reporters flocked to the location. As the

afraid out there all by yourself?” Her reply was a simple, “No.” The reporter followed up, “How

1st Sunday of Advent
Hanging of the Greens
For the past several Sundays we have been remembering and embracing the promises God
has made. Promises that strengthen us and help us face the fears that often invade our lives.
God has given us so many promises; promises we can stake our lives on. His greatest promise was to seek and save the lost. How we love the image of the Good Shepherd going out
and finding the lost sheep. On November 7th, Stewardship Sunday, we will have the opportunity to respond to God’s love by pledging ourselves to His work through Longview Chapel. Let
us take seriously our opportunity to dedicate our Time, Talent and Treasure to the great cause
of Christ. Promises are not always easy to keep, but we follow through when our motive is
love. God so loved us He allowed His own Son to suffer for our benefit. “He was wounded for
our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us
whole, and by his bruises we are healed.” (Isaiah 53:5) Our giving is in response to the love
and promise God gave and kept.
Thanksgiving Sack Collection Ends:
November 14th will be the final Sunday we collect Thanksgiving sacks for the needy in Lee’s Summit. In order for the food to be delivered to needy families by Thanksgiving we must have them to
Lee’s Summit Social Services by November 15th. Lee’s Summit Social Services provide Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets for some 500 plus families. In the past
we have collected over 80 sacks of food. We appreciate
everyone’s support..

Celebrating Our Youth
We celebrate the presence and participation of
our youth at Longview Chapel on Youth Sunday,
October 3. The youth’s eagerness and leadership
in both morning services were great. The congregation certainly enjoyed both services and we
salute the youth’s growth in grace, their creativity,
their energy and their faith. Your Longview

Thursday Bible Study
Words can not begin
to express our appreciation for the loving
response we have
received over the past months for the loss of our
daughter, Jenny. That blessing combined with the
concern and attention shown during and after Dave’s
heart surgery has lifted our spirits as well as reminding
us of the Longview family tradition. Also, thank you
Pastor for the numerous visits and prayers shared
with us. And thank you Larry Maxey for your timely
visit recently and sharing prayer and the Lord’s Supper. Thank you all, and accept our heartfelt awareness of your love. We have a very large stack of cards
and letters to prove it. Cleo & Dave McGinty
Thank you so much for your care and concern. I just
wanted to thank everyone for the cards and prayers.
Its great to be part of the family at Longview. Thanks
again, Rick & Cindy Brittain
Our sympathy goes out to Neoma Johnson on the
death of her mother Hazel Woods, who passed away
recently. Services were held on October 20, 2010 in
Nevada, MO. Hazel was 96 years of age.

We will hold our second annual CPR/AED
training at 7:00, November 9th, in Long
Hall. This will be a review for people who
have never had CPR/AED training as well
as for those who need a refresher. Also,
after our CPR/AED class last year, many of
us felt that the church should have an
Automatic External Defibrillator (AED).
So, we have found the money to purchase
one, and we will have our AED here for us
to see and learn to use.

Saturday , 20 November, 9:30-3:00
Again this year we are asking church members to place our commercial made signs in
their yards, and to return them after the sale so we can reuse them. Bake goods are one of the hottest items at this event. For all who will be baking , workers will be at the church on Thursday until
2PM to receive baked goods , or very early on Friday. Please label what the contents are, and if by
chance you do not see a worker please place a note that the item is for the bake sale. The famous clip
boards will be going around the church for bake goods and helping on sales day. If you need a pie pan
or plate for your baked goods I have a few and will place them in our blue box in hallway. This year
we have several new and different items. Encourage your friends and neighbors to attend.
CMF will have their famous hot dogs, chili and drinks for sale, Friday & Saturday, 11:00-2:00.
Willing Workers will be working on 30th November & 07 December fixing the Cheer Baskets, if you
would have any items you would care to donate please place in our blue box out in the hallway.

What a fun time we had at our own little Pumpkin Patch here at Longview Chapel!
Every child got to take home a pumpkin. We had a wonderful hayride by Mr. Alex
and then ate hotdogs made by Chef Jackie! Thank you for making our pumpkin
day special! More fun to come at the end of the month with our Halloween Parade! Denise Hadley- Director

Hanging of the Green—1st Sunday of Advent
Sunday, November 28, marks the beginning of the four week period known as Advent.
It begins with a special Hanging of the Greens service on the 28th. During this service
we will complete our Sanctuary decorations as we recall the significance and meaning behind the different symbols and decorations. Since the children are involved in this special worship service there will be no Children’s Sunday School or Children’s Worship on
this Sunday.
The preliminary decorating will be done on Sunday afternoon, November 21st beginning
at 2:00 p.m. If you would like to help with this important task please contact Cathy
Renfro or Cindy Beason who chair our Worship Ministry.
Chapel to Participate in Benefit for ReDiscover:
An event called “ReDiscover the Holidays” will take place in the New Longview area.
Several homes in the area along with Lola Long Elementary School and the Chapel will be
open for this Christmas showcase which will benefit ReDiscover. ReDiscover is a notfor-profit organization whose purpose is to serve the mental health needs of individuals
in the Lee’s Summit area. Those wishing to take the tour may purchase tickets from ReDiscover. The Chapel is scheduled to be open from 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday,
December 4th, and from Noon till 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 5th.
We need volunteers to cover two-hour shifts on these two days. Volunteers are needed to watch over
the building as tour participants view the Chapel’s Christmas decorations in the sanctuary. If you could help with this event please contact Pastor Gary.
