The 1.03 mile track, Motorland de Aragón, is a CIKFIA Level A approved karting facility. The chassis were identically prepared FA Victory karts powered by IAME X-30 engines. The three day event consisted of top drivers invited from 14 different countries divided into two 3-driver teams representing each country. The event is a six-hour endurance race that is divided into two 3-hour segments. Three drivers representing one of the Team USA entries were all IKF Experts and teamed together to capture a podium spot on the prestigious steps of this International Karting Event. The three drivers representing Team USA were: Jim Russell Jr. (six Duffys), Chuck Gafrarar (four Duffys), and Chris Scribner (seven Duffys). The first day was open practice for all teams. Day two was qualifying and the first 3-hour race. Day three was the Jim Russell, Jr, Chris Scribner, Phil Kirby (team Manager) and Chuck Gafrarar final 3-hour race. Final finishing positions were determined by combining the results for both 3-hour races. Team USA with Russell, Gafrarar and Scribner finished third. The other USA team headed by IKF Expert Joey Licata, Jr, Kyle Weigand, and Joey Winsett finished a respectable sixth. Much has to be credited to IKF for sanctioning world class competitive events, allowing these three competitors to polish their skills to compete internationally. 2008 was USA’s first podium finish for this annual event. 2009 IKF REGIONAL MAP 20 KARTER NEWS - january 2009 KARTER NEWS - january 2009 21 Join IKF. Travel. the World! See B ack in the year 1985 I was hired by the Newton Kart Klub to provide the Karter News a story recapping that track’s 2-Cycle Speedway Grand Nationals. As a recent college grad with a degree in Communications and a full time gig as Editor of a small town paper, I thought moonlighting for a week at a kart track might be a nice way to spend my hard earned vacation time while simultaneously adding a few dollars to my pocket. Two things happened that week that have forever changed the course of my life. The first is that several other Speedway promoters got wind of the fact that I knew just enough about karting to be the potential author of recaps for their future Grand National events. The second is that I met my future husband. Little did I know that once I learned to change a few tires, switch a few gears and properly operate a stop watch, the travel opportunities available to kart racers would open up. The US Navy may advertise that you can join their ranks and see the world, but they have nothing on Kart racers! In the past 23 years Jack has taken me to nearly every corner of the United States for some sort of karting event. Granted, the only parts of each “corner” I’ve actually seen have been the Super 8 Motel, the track and the road that connects the two. But I’ve traveled... I’ve been to the state of Ohio, where Jack and I met a complete stranger in a dark parking lot to purchase a kart frame, which was apparently quite a bargain. I’ve been to Louisiana, where the weatherman on the television didn’t 22 By Sharee Hoegerl dare tell us the actual temperature outside, but did stress that everyone should move at a speed appropriate for the “heat index”, a number that was consistently well into 3 digits. I’ve been to Seattle, where I observed that the worst profession in the world has to be that of the school bus driver who motors a bus full of screaming students onto a ferry, then has to sit on the bus WITH those students for the 45 minute trip across the bay I’ve been to New Mexico, where the hometown crowd assured me that sand storms are rare; I should have been suspicious when I saw that every trailer with a New Mexico license plate had pairs of goggles hanging right inside the door for easy access when the sand storm did strike. I’ve been to Arizona, where temperatures required one to wear a winter coat (suitable for Iowa winters) during registration, shorts and t-shirt by Feature time, and back into the winter coat as tech wrapped up. As a side bar, it was on this trip that we learned never to fire the flagman until ownership of the actual flags is determined. If personnel changes are required despite ownership, it is good to know where to find the nearest Wal-Mart for purchase of fabric, dowels and a staple gun. I’ve been to Nebraska, a state plagued with drought until the IKF Grand Nationals pulled into town. Four days of monsoon like weather (9” of rain total) had created a beautiful lakeside track. For the record, cones and disc blades rarely keep speedway karters from shoving each other into the infield, but not a single kart tire hit “lake water” that week. I’ve been to a corner of the California desert where I was certain the Israelites wandered those 40 years. For the record, I did not spy any manna in the early morning light. I’ve been to Jamaica… not the one basked in sunshine with pristine beaches, but rather the Jamaica that is just down from the slaughterhouse in Perry, Iowa. I’ve been to Delaware… not the state on the east coast, but the Delaware that is a dot on the map somewhere between the Mississippi River and Waterloo, Iowa (which is, by the way, home to another slaughter house – Iowans are meat eaters). I’ve been to Florida, where I learned that it is possible to burn the shins of both legs simultaneously on an exhaust pipe if one is particularly graceful. Jack is still uncertain how I accomplished this feat, though I have the scars to prove it. I’ve been to Georgia and Tennessee and Indiana and Texas; stranded at an airport in Colorado and at both the old and new airport in Ontario, California. If you’ve restricted your kart racing to your local track, or even just your Region series, consider all that karting has to offer. The 2009 Grand National schedule could take you to all sorts of fun places, including two stops in the Lone Star State. Grand National events are slated in Slidell, Texas; Reno, Nevada; Redding, California; Newton, Iowa; and Winona, Texas. Load up the trailer, pack up the family and see some of our great nation this summer. Race, wrench or spectate… it’s all good. See you at the track! A wonderful event that will cause local parents to research karts after seeing our kids glowing (literally) with a smile for the complete parade route. We used an XM radio to play holiday music throughout the parade. A few of the kids were actually voiceless towards the end from singing along! For their efforts, they won a first place trophy in their class, along with a lasting memory. Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from Shasta Kart Klub! 24 KARTER NEWS - january 2009 KARTER NEWS - january 2009 25 hot off the press Tyler's First Win! HPV 2 was the final class of the 2008 season. Jacob Will scored the pole with a grand qualifying effort, but after a near epic prefinal he started the final from fourth. Camden Geise led the seven kart train to the checkered flag in the prefinal with Tyler Palmer, Raquel Martinez, Will, Jared Torres, Kyle Shriver and Dylan Nobile all lined up behind him. Missing from that lead group was Adrian Starrantino who finished back in tenth. Starrantino, Nobile and Martinez were the only three drivers in contention for the championship. The final went down to Geise and Palmer trading the lead in the early stages of the contest and Palmer and Geise swapping the lead in the late stages of the contest. Martinez played her part from third place, watching and waiting for the time to strike. The lead trio distanced themselves from a chase group seven strong and ran alone to the finish line. I really thought Martinez has something in the bag, but as it turned out Palmer was the one to come through for a big win. His victory didn’t do a lot for him in terms of the championship, but it did help Nobile to beat out Starrantino by only 23 points. Shriver and Skeer completed the top-five with Starrantino coming away in sixth and Nobile managing tenth. Italkart is proud to introduce the redesigned 2009 kart. A stellar new sticker kit and the addition of the KG New Age bodywork top the list of most eye catching changes. The red and green colors synonymous with Italkart have remained unchanged until now. 2009 begins a clean slate for Italkart. After months of design, adjustments and implementing intricate details, the bar has been raised. “We are very excited to introduce the new Italkart look and chassis to the North American market,” said Brian DeVries of Italian Motors USA. “We know a lot of hard work and dedication has gone into the development of the new kart and we look forward to seeing the results on the track.” The 2009 Italkart chassis debut was made 26 at the Stars of Karting event in New Castle, Indiana. Factory driver David Jurca went on to capture two podiums including a victory in the prestigious ICC shifter class. Not only has the look of the 2009 been improved, but the chassis has undergone several key revisions. These modifications not only build on the design, but on the overall performance. The front end of the kart has undergone several adjustments that improve the way the Italkart adapts and responds to the race track. Advancements have also been made to the new Italkart braking system, which incorporates an innovative design and further reliability. The announcement of the 2009 Italkart is also accompanied with the launch of a completely revamped www.italkart.com. The website has undergone significant changes and improvements to accommodate the new chassis and detailed analysis of all the refinements. The site also includes in-depth chassis setup guides, chassis comparisons and dealer contact information. Those interested in the 2009 Italkart product line or possible dealers can visit www.italkart.com for more details. It has also been won by Scott Speed (2002), Bobby Wilson (2003) and Kyle Wiegand (2004 & 2005). The King of the Streets race is sponsored by the Bob Bondurant SuperKart School in Phoenix, AZ. Roger Ruthhart, president of the Rock Island Grand Prix, is happy to see the King of Streets tradition continue. “This event has changed over time, but has always provided a challenge for the top gearbox drivers in the sport. There’s no advance practice. Just show up, learn the course and race. At first look, the course does not appear technically difficult, but the street course challenges drivers in ways they are not used to.” Presenting Sponsors are AT&T and Mazda Motorsports. The $25,000 RIGP purse is sponsored by Jumer’s Casino & Hotel. Other major sponsors include Kart Expo International presented by Sodi Kart and The Dispatch, and Rock Island Argus newspapers. The Rock Island Grand Prix, the world’s largest karting street race, draws entries from throughout the United States and Canada, competing for one of karting’s largest purses. It has also hosted racers from Italy, France, Colombia, Costa Rica, England, Argentina, Bermuda, the Philippines and Mexico. It includes 14 feature pro races in 4-cycle, 2-cycle and shifter classes. The races are also broadcast live worldwide via the internet by RaceFanRadio.com. It is held Saturday and Rock Island Grand Prix announce changes for 2009 King of the Streets ROCK ISLAND, IL. – Superkarts! USA and the Rock Island Grand Prix have announced that the 2009 King of the Streets race will feature the S3 Stock Moto class. At its inception, and during the glory days of the SKUSA Pro Moto Tour, the moto class featured the top drivers competing for the King of the Streets crown – the most coveted title in shifter kart racing. More recently it featured top Intercontinental C drivers. Now, beginning with the Sept. 5-6, 2009 event, the King of the Streets race will again showcase top drivers in moto shifter karts. King of the Streets was originally created as an event that would circulate among various temporary venues. The 1998 event at the Oklahoma City Grand Prix was won by Joe Janowski. In 1999 Alan Rudolph won at Quincy in the Park. From that point, the race has had a permanent home at the Rock Island Grand Prix and become one of the most coveted titles in kart racing. The reigning King is Alex Speed. Alan Rudolph has won the crown four times (1999, 2000, 2001 & 2006). Sunday of Labor Day Weekend.
