October 11, 2015 - St. Barnabas Parish
The Catholic Community of Saint Barnabas October 11, 2015 Twenty Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time PARISH MISSION The family of St. Barnabas Parish celebrates the Eucharist, welcomes and serves all, shares talents, fosters learning, and initiates others into the life of Christ. 10134 South Longwood, Chicago, IL 60643 www.stbarnabasparish.org 773-779-1166 The Pastor’s Mutterings What, Another Survey? As you have been reading in these pages for the past several weeks, St. Barnabas Parish is involved in a remarkable process called “Parish Transformation.” With the assistance of the Archdiocese, many of you have formed a team that will develop a plan for the future mission of St. Barnabas Parish. It is an exciting and challenging effort, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The result of their work will include specific goals, strategies, benchmarks, and timelines, to achieve the plan we will present to Archbishop Cupich at the beginning of 2016. To be effective, and not just another program or study gathering dust on a shelf, we will need the engagement of all the people of St. Barnabas in this journey. The Parish Transformation team will rely on your wisdom, experience, faith, and love of our parish to help us accomplish the vision. This past week we sent an email to all parishioners of St. Barnabas who provided us with their address. It contained a link to a survey about St. Barnabas Parish which you can complete online. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/San_Barnabas This link is also on our parish website: www.stbarnabasparish.org. Printed copies of the survey are available in the church pews and vestibule this weekend for those who may not want to fill out the survey online. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey. Your anonymity is assured, but your answers will be invaluable. If you take a printed copy home, I ask that you complete it, and return it next weekend when you come to Mass. The deadline for all completed surveys is Friday, October 15. Please know that this is not just another survey! Your thoughtful answers will help insure the future of our parish mission and ministry, and the direction of the life of St. Barnabas for many years to come. May God bless you for your help! Parish Transformation Update This week the Parish Transformation Team continued our discussions by focusing on our parish’s strengths that we should celebrate and build upon. In Scriptural terms, these are our “Pearls of Great Price.” The most common pearls that arose in discussion were: • Vibrant Music and Worship • Spirit of Community • Outreach to the Sick and Needy As we continue forward through our reflection on mission, these pearls will be important for us to remember and ask ourselves how we can use them as a strong foundation from which we can more effectively carry out the mission of Christ through our parish. Remember St. Barnabas: he was an evangelizer and an example of energy and outreach. Please continue to pray for the Parish Transformation Team. If you are interested in joining our group, it’s not too late! Simply contact Fr. Bill, pick up a workbook at the Parish Office and attend the next meeting on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Church Hall. Spiritual Life ANOINTING OF THE SICK Saturday, October 17, 2015, 4:00 pm Mass Is anyone among you suffering? You should pray . . . Is anyone among you sick? You should summon the presbyters of the church, and they should pray over you and anoint you with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith will save you and the Lord will raise you up. James 5:13-15 Anointing of the Sick is a sacrament of healing, and is the prayer of Christ and his Church for the physical and spiritual health of a sick person. This sacrament was formerly called Extreme Unction or the Last Rites. In the past, the anointing was done near the time of death. The new rites restore a proper balance between the pastoral ministry to the sick and the pastoral ministry to the dying. Therefore, the sacrament can and should be given to anyone facing serious illness or a serious medical event, such as surgery. The Sacrament of the Sick will be celebrated at the 4 pm liturgy on Saturday, October 17th. Who may be anointed? 1. A sick person ought to be anointed before s/he undergoes surgery, whether or not the surgery is serious. 2. Persons with chronic illnesses. 3. Old persons, even if they are not suffering from a dangerous illness. 4. A sick child may be anointed in order to be comforted and uplifted by the sacrament. 5. Developmentally disabled persons. MASS IN HONOR OF ALL MILITARY SERVICE MEN AND WOMEN, PAST AND PRESENT On Sunday, November 8th we will once again celebrate a Mass in honor of all military servicemen and women, past and present. We are in need of flag bearers for all branches of the armed forces to participate in this very special liturgy. We are also in need of family members of active duty servicemen and women to present our gifts of bread and wine along with a peace candle and the names of those who are currently serving in the military. If you would like to carry your branch’s flag or participate in the presentation of gifts, please contact Kitty Ryan at [email protected] or 773-779-1166 ext. 226 by October 16th. ENVIRONMENTAL THANKS Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the Fall Festival a great event. Reusing cups for refills saved users a dollar, but helped our environment even more. Having tap water and no bottled water was also an earth saver. Pope Francis would have approved! Thanks for your hard work and congratulations on a great success! St. Barnabas Peace and Justice Committee SAVE THE DATE: SATURDAY, DECEMBER 5TH Parish Life 2 - 3 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED St. Barnabas will be receiving 2 new trees through The BAPA and Openlands tree replacement program. We were selected to participate because of 2 parkway trees that were removed by the city. One of the many goals that BAPA seeks to accomplish is that of continuing the important legacy of trees in our community. Over the last several years, we have lost hundreds of trees to weather, and disease including the Emerald Ash Borer. Tree planting will take place on Saturday, November 6 from 9:00—12:00. Volunteers will be sorted into teams to assist with the planting. If you are interested in volunteering for this worthwhile project, please contact Gail Byrnes at [email protected] or call 773-779-1166, ext. 227. St. Barnabas Grade Spotlight The school community participated in a mass to commemorate Patriot Day. They also remembered those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and give thanks for those in our community who serve us each day as first responders. To all of the policemen, firemen, EMT, and healthcare professionals within our St. Barnabas family, we sincerely thank you for all you do. Human Concerns PEACE QUOTE “Respect for life and for the dignity of the human person extends also to the rest of creation, which is called to join man in praising God.” Saint John Paul II, 1990 World Day of Peace Message, no.16 ONE PARISH, ONE BOOK Did you know that Pope Francis has a Masters Degree in Chemistry? His new encyclical, Laudato Si, has generated intense public discussion about the causes and impact of global warming. The St. Barnabas Peace and Justice Committee has ordered 50 copies and will be selling them after Mass for $10. If you are seeking a thought provoking analysis of how our Catholic Social Teaching applies to the modern global economy, you should buy this book! Discussion groups will follow. FALL/ WINTER COLLECTION FOR “CHILDREN’S CLOTHING CLOSET” Children’s Clothing Closet at St. Gall’s Parish is a ministry dedicated to children: new born up to age eleven. They are in need of gently used winter coats and other clothing for the fall and winter season. We ask that all clothes be washed before being donated. This is part of Respect Life month. St. Barnabas will be collecting winter coats and clothing for new born up to age eleven in the Narthex on two weekends Oct. 10-11 and Oct. 24-25. If anyone would like to help deliver the clothing, please contact [email protected]. Thank you for your generosity. The Baby Bottle Project benefiting The Women’s Centers of Greater Chicago land. This non-profit organization directly assists mothers and families experiencing crisis pregnancies by offering emotional, financial, material, and spiritual support through counseling, clothing & monetary provisions, prayer, and other aid. Each year the three locations together have over 5,000 appointments with expecting mothers. By God’s Grace, The Women’s Centers have saved over 36,000 babies—and their mothers—from abortion since opening in 1984. Fill your Baby Bottle with your spare change, and return it the weekend of October 24-25. FATHER It is the Spirit himself, whom we received in Baptism, who teaches us, who spurs us to say to God: “Father” or, rather, “Abba!” – which means “papa” or [“dad”]. Our God is like this: he is a dad to us….God treats us as children, he understands us, he forgives us, he embraces us, he loves us even when we err. - General audience, April 10, 2013 Reflection: We are children of the God of the universe, the one who is all-powerful and yet all-loving too. Does that fact make any difference to you as you go about your day-to-day life?
