The Ministry is dedicated to building a strong association of churches committed to Biblical authority, and who join together as partners to accomplish God’s mission-objective of transforming unbelievers through a personal encounter with Jesus Christ. TM’s covenanting churches, currently numbering 165, are located in Southern California, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Nevada, Utah and Washington. TM is a member of Evangelical Council for Financial Accountability (ECFA). ECFA is committed to helping Christcentered organizations earn the public’s trust through developing and maintaining standards of accountability that convey God-honoring ethical practices. TM is a member of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE) founded in 1942. The NAE extends the Kingdom of God through a fellowship of member denominations, churches, organizations, and individuals, demonstrating the unity of the body of Christ by standing for biblical truth, speaking with a representative voice, and serving the evangelical community through united action, cooperative ministry, and strategic planning. Curry, Jr., President of the Board of Directors of Transformation Ministries TM is making progress! As a Board president, personal financial supporter, TM church staff member, and now a pastor of a TM covenanting church, I am proud to proclaim emphatically and truthfully, Transformation Ministries (TM) is making great progress! Last year, I wrote about transition. After transition comes progression – that is advancement. The Ministry is succeeding in her charge as a movement to missionempowering relationships by: deepening and developing pastors as spiritual leaders; coaching and networking churches toward greater health and missional vitality; and supporting and initiating viable church planting partnerships. If you ever wondered if we are getting anywhere as a mission organization, I want you to know we are making headway. We are seeing our churches more fully engaged, pastors strengthened, and we are making great strides in church planting. I am encouraged during quarterly Board meetings when we vote to include new churches desiring to partner with TM in ministry. I am encouraged as I hear about the programs being developed to encourage pastors to stay in the race. I am encouraged as I see our finances turn around. We need to make more progress in this last area, but we are making progress. TM’s advancement is because of your commitment. Yes. You, the one taking the time to read my few scattered thoughts. You, who annually attend the Transforming Churches Conference. You, who give money to support and undergird our mission. You, who pray for the mission of the Ministry. We are making progress for God, and I still believe the best is yet to come. Keep praying for TM – our mission and our member churches. 2013-2014 Officers 2013-2014 Officers 2013-2014 Board Directors 2013-2014 Boardofof Directors Kenneth Curry, President Charity Ali Josh Matlock Pat Gopperton, Vice President Aubrey Barnwell William Nolte Josh Matlock, Treasurer Francis Burgula David Palmquist Ronald Stevens, Secretary Kenneth Curry Claudette Ratcliffe William Nolte, Mission Lead Boris Duran Jyl Ranabauer Pat Gopperton Ronald Stevens Wayne Leamons James Walden Mission Transformation Ministries exists to build a movement of mission-empowering relationships by: • deepening and developing pastors as spiritual leaders; • coaching and networking churches toward greater health and missional vitality; and • supporting and initiating viable church planting partnerships. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 3 Core Values Ordination Standards Council Because we believe Scripture is God’s infallible word, it is the supreme authority for Christ-followers and the Church. Dale Salico, Chair Neil Frey, Secretary Alex Chisholm God-Dependent William Ford, III Because we believe Scripture teaches that apart from God we can do nothing, we are a people of prayer, obedience, faith and risk. John Hopkins Jimmie Hubbard Mission of God Daniel Huerta Because we believe salvation is found only in Jesus Christ, we are committed through work and deed to see all lost people come to Christ and grow into His fully devoted followers, and to multiply missional congregations. Mark Lambert Linda Long Diane Lutz Mission-Empowering Relationships Kirk Mackie Because we believe God is a relational being who created humanity in His image, and because the Scriptures call churches to interdependent relationships to most effectively carry out God’s mission, we value building relationships both between pastors and between congregations. Generation to Generation Because we believe each generation needs new life in Christ, we value the development of a new generation of leaders, and ministries that reach and serve next generations. Spiritual Leadership Because we believe Scripture places critical importance on the quality of leadership, we seek and equip leaders called by God, sanctified and gifted by the Holy Spirit who serve in various capacities and guide the church in fulfilling His purpose. Vision We envision a God-empowered movement of churches: • every pastor growing • every church healthy • every community transformed for Christ.hhhhhhhhhmmmmmmmmm 4 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 The Important Dynamic By William Nolte, Chief Executive Officer/Mission Lead The Annual Ministry Report is a summary and a turning of the page. Practically speaking, it presents the Ministry during a given period of time, but, just as significantly, it takes a look at where we are headed. The term Janus Parallelism describes a literary device in which a middle stich of poetry contains a phrase which parallels the line preceding it, and also parallels the line that follows. At the Transforming Churches Conference, in October 2012, our Transformation Ministries (TM) family examined the theme of “One Gospel, Church, Mission” during two (2) fantastic days hosted by the High Desert Church in Victorville. The initial presentation of this year’s report is during the 2013 TM family gathering hosted by First Baptist Church of Downey, and centers our attention on the subject of “Uncommon Disciples”. What is that core vision which looks both back and also forward? Our continuing focus and commitment from 2013 moves us forward into 2014 with the same core vision and mission. More Healthy Churches, More Changed Lives! In the pages of this report, you will see how TM is pursuing that God-given vision through developing pastors, helping churches be healthy and planting new churches. The end result will be More Healthy Churches! In keeping with our values of being faithful and fruitful, this report also seeks to be celebratory and accountable. The vision is clear. How did we connect leaders and churches to the mission of TM and, more importantly, the one mission of the Church as a whole? Connecting Leaders To Other Leaders One of the most telling realities in TM is about those pastors/leaders who take advantage of the opportunity to be part of a TM Pastor Mentor Group (PMG), and feel better equipped and supported in the ongoing challenge of leading a local congregation. In early 2013, three (3) new PMGs were formed bringing the total number to eighteen (18). One hundred and sixty-three (163) leaders meet regularly throughout the TM network as part of this vital connecting opportunity. To Training and Resources A significant developmental focus in TM over the past two (2) to three (3) years has been the commitment to provide leadership-specific training. The one essential dynamic in a healthy church is effective leadership, period, and the contexts of leadership vary greatly. Therefore, TM provides specialized resource training for pastors and leaders which takes into consideration the differences of language, culture, ministry type, and congregation size. That commitment is reflected in this report. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 5 To Their Call and Ministry One of TMs great joys and privileges is agreeing with God’s choice of leaders in the recognition of women and men in our congregations called to full-time service. Over the past year, we affirmed five (5) individuals through ordination. What a wonderful experience it is to join in the discernment process with local churches. Another way this connection to call and ministry happens in TM is through the New Church Planting (NCP) process. During this past year, regularly scheduled Planter Clusters helped support twenty-six (26) leaders, and four (4) leaders were affirmed as current or future TM church planters. Connecting Congregations To One Another TM is an association of covenanting congregations. This is a clear Biblical model from the inception of the Church. Welcoming congregations into the fellowship, or into a closer connection, is an important goal for the Ministry. Over the past year, three (3) new covenanting congregations joined TM. In addition, two (2) affiliated congregations were lent a hand in becoming covenanting churches. To Resources As with pastors and leaders, TM is committed to come alongside congregations with support and resources. This may happen in the context of pastoral transition; a general assessment of health and congregational focus; or connection to organizations and conferences which bring value. One great example this year was the exclusive arrangement TM negotiated with Floodgate Productions to provide media resources to any TM congregation which chose to take advantage of the two-year opportunity. Other examples include providing opportunities for congregations to benefit from conferences such as Catalyst and Willow Creek’s Leadership Summit. To a Significant Future Ministry The privilege of assisting congregations in finding their next pastoral leader is one of the crucial moments for the ministry of TM. From initial consultation with church leaders and boards through the search process, the Ministry is committed to serve. Every church can benefit from an honest assessment coupled with strategic, prayerful, and intentional attention to its mission and vision. One of the best ways TM can serve is by connecting congregations to the coaching and support they need for their next step. Connecting Looking Forward One Very Clear Reality Many of our TM leaders and congregations have observed and articulated the Ministry’s loss of a bit of that “connection.” Surely times have changed and the old days aren’t coming back, but there is an essential dynamic of being an association which celebrates, and is strengthened and encouraged by a sense of common mission, camaraderie and, well, connection. The Good News TM really does have many ways to support and help every leader and every church! Challenging News Many pastors and churches appear to be unaware or disconnected. We are in this great mission, together, and we will flourish and be effective as we build on our mission connection. This is one clear mandate and commitment moving forward. Each of us can be a part of improving this important dynamic. Participate. Communicate. Network. Healthy churches are connected churches: connected to Christ, the Head of His church, and to one another as co-laborers in this great and only mission. 6 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 Partners in the Gospel By Douglas Meye, Developing Pastors Lead The gospel birthed the Church. The Church is on mission with the gospel. It is an ongoing, supernatural dynamic, which brings healing to our world and glory to God — and Transformation Ministries (TM) is right in the center of it. A key element in this exciting dynamic is spiritual leadership. Take spiritual leadership out of the mix and you will eventually have a diluted gospel, an anemic church, and a loss of mission. For this reason, God himself calls, places, and continues to develop spiritual leaders. Transforming Churches Conference Inspiration The Transforming Churches Conference (TCC) is the one event to which all of our churches, leaders, and members are invited. What a great conference was held in 2012 at High Desert Church of Victorville themed: ONE — Gospel, Church, Mission. Ninety-four (94) pastors attended the event with 588 conferees. Evaluations averaged 4.54 out of a possible 5. Very, very positive! One pastor shared, “This conference was a great blessing to me.” Another added, “Sessions were full of needed information.” We at TM want to partner with God. Our goal is to provide every spiritual leader in TM with opportunities to receive the Spirit’s inspiration, useful information, and help with practical ministry application. Because we are required by God to be both faithful and fruitful, we continually measure our efforts, and we now share the results with you. The Gospel Calls Pastors to be Leaders By Jason Hickey, Student Ministries Pastor, Beachpoint Church of Fountain Valley I am excited to pursue ordination with Transformation Ministries To be ordained by recommendation of the very same people because these are the men and women that I have been that helped me get where I am today will be an incredible doing ministry with for the last ten (10) years of my life. These honor and joy for both myself and my family. We are so people have seen me grow up in my faith, and some have blessed to have this opportunity, and look forward to the played significant roles in that growth. coming years of ministry, together. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 7 Focused Learning Events Information The Ministry provides at least one focused learning event for each TM pastor. These events bring together pastors sharing similar ministry contexts: typically, church size or ethnicity. Involvement in these events in 2013 is up! (See the chart below.) These pastors have met together for mutual learning and coaching, implemented assignments in their churches, and have willingly made themselves accountable to each other. Every church has experienced quantitative and qualitative growth. This is exciting! TM recently added a Mustard Seed Cohort for pastors of churches with fewer than 150 members. Nine (9) pastors have agreed to be part of this process led by Dane Aaker and Doug Meye. The first extended meeting was held at Thousand Pines Christian Camp in Crestline, on September 23 and 24, 2013. 8 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 PASTOR MENTOR GROUPS Pastor Mentor Groups ASIAN PASTORS (2 Groups) Application Peter Chou of Irvine First Chinese Baptist Church Santos Yao of Life Christian Fellowship Currently, there are eighteen (18) Pastor Mentor Groups (PMGs) in TM reaching more than 150 people. Three (3) PMGs were added this past year led by: Peter Chou and Santos Yao for Asian pastors; and Diane Lutz for women pastors. Pastoral Health Survey One hundred thirteen (113) lead pastors and pastoral staff participated in the Pastoral Health Survey. Here are a few observations. Fifty-six percent (56%) of the respondents indicated TM has been helpful in their growth as a spiritual leader, up from forty-one percent (41%) in 2011. Even more encouraging, the percentage jumps to seventy-six percent (76%) among the pastors involved in a PMG. On a related note, there was a direct correlation between the number of TM-related training events the leader attended, and how the leader scored TM’s helpfulness to them as a spiritual leader. As you look over this report, you’ll not see perfection, and you do see progress. This growth is possible because so many of you, pastors and church leaders, are striving to be the most effective spiritual leaders you can be for the sake of Jesus and His Church. Thank you! We count it a privilege to be your partners in the gospel. Curry, Jr., Pastor, Friendship Baptist Church of Yorba Linda The Apostle Paul’s mission to spread the gospel in places where it had never been presented, and to people who seemingly had no connection to Christ the Messiah of the Jews, was an exciting task fueled by a direct call from Christ. It was a challenging commission, but he persevered. Why? Because persevering is part of the process. As a leader faced with faithfully leading a historic church through challenges and transitions, I realize the importance of mission support. Transformation Ministries (TM) has been a phenomenal resource to me as I transition and make my debut as a pastor. Having experienced leaders pray, encourage, and counsel you through the course is extremely important. The Apostle Paul often requested the prayers of others to help him in his mission. I know, personally, that the leaders of TM have prayed for me and my church. And those prayers help make the journey easier. Challenges will continue to arise, and partnership makes all the difference in the world! Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 9 Viable Ministries in Changing Neighborhoods By Mark Lambert, Church Health Lead Church Health Indicators The church statistical information provided through our email sur vey produced the following information. • O ne hundred and twenty-one (74%) of our churches reported a total of 1,979 baptisms, and a combined attendance of 36,612 during 2012. • T he baptism ratio average this year is 1:18, and our goal is 1:15. Forty-eight percent (48%) of the reporting churches are at or below the 1:15 ratio. Some of our churches are seeing God move in wonderful ways. Many congregations enjoy solid and established missional engagement within their communities. On the other hand, many other churches are working hard to maintain valid and viable ministries in changing neighborhoods, while other mission churches seek to establish a gospel witness to immigrant populations. 10 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 New Churches Churches in Transition Helping churches in transition is one of TM’s highest priorities. The “next pastor” will have a significant impact on the future of the Church. TM’s goal is to walk with search teams and congregations on this journey – sharing guidance, experience, and to call a pastor who will lead the church to health and missional vitality. In early 2012, we embarked on a journey knowing in our hearts two things — God was calling us to a senior role, and our move would return us west. A friend encouraged me to contact Transformation Ministries (TM), and a quick perusal of the website made it clear I had discovered a network of churches and ministries that felt like home. From the point of submitting my application to the interview with Dr. Dale Salico, I found a genuine warmth and professionalism. The transitional season was longer than anticipated, but I found that the TM staff was there to answer questions, send notes of encouragement, and help coordinate meetings with the Pastoral Search Team (PST). During this season, Mark Lambert and Beverly-Jene Coffman were both supportive and a great resource for information and inspiration, and when finally candidating, we felt prayed for, well informed, and warmly received. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 11 Becoming a Learning Church By Douglas Meye I enjoy playing golf, but I’m only an average player on my very best days. My wife, who is a very good player, encourages me to get lessons. I’ve not taken her advice. So, while I keep hacking and scaring worms, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Inbe Park, and every other professional golfer meets with their respective coaches on a regular basis to ensure they are on top of their game. Why haven’t I taken even a few lessons? Because I’m proud, cheap, and most of all satisfied with being only an average golfer and mumbling about how I wish I was better. A number of years ago, I came across a study indicating that one of the common characteristics of healthy, growing churches was their willingness to ask for help from the outside on a regular basis. At Transformation Ministries (TM), we are excited to announce the beginning of a new resource of Learning Church Coaches available to churches desiring to be at the top of their ministry calling. A coach is available to any church willing to commit itself to “learning” how to become a more effective church. A number of respected TM pastors with proven ministry track records, and the ability to diagnose situations and provide solutions, have been asked to serve as Learning Church Coaches. The average coaching relationship period will be six to twelve months with a coach dedicating the greater part of his time to the pastor and leadership team, and the entire congregation will be part of the learning and growing process. If your church is seeking help with a specific issue, struggling to move off a plateau, or wanting to move from good ministry to more effective ministry, contact the TM Office to learn more about becoming a Learning Church. Rock Harbor Christian Fellowship of Morro Bay Youth and Surf Outreach Seek First and Obey By Dale Williamson, Pastoral Search Team Chair, First Baptist Church of Downey Our journey of seeking a new Senior Pastor began in August 2011, and we found the members of the Pastoral Search Team (PST) were unfamiliar with the process. Mark Lambert, representing Transformation Ministries (TM), was helpful in getting us started, and provided support along the way — always lifting us up in prayer. How grateful we are for TM’s prayer support. When we had screened more than 100 applications, TM assisted in conducting independent interviews for selected candidates, and their insights were very helpful in confirming our own perception of God’s leading. This was a spiritual journey for our Team, as much as a search for a new pastor. We placed an emphasis on submission to the Holy Spirit to seek His will first and obey (2 Chronicles 20). In addition, we regularly engaged the congregation with prayer points and guidelines during the 18-month search process. In the end, He provided just the right man! 12 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 Working Together Advancing the Mission By Kimberly Flowers, Development Director “A God-empowered movement of churches with every pastor growing, every church healthy, and every community transformed for Christ.” Partners in Mission Atherton Baptist Homes Christian Community Credit Union The Cutler Group International Ministries Wealth Solutions This is the vision of Transformation Ministries (TM), which exists to build a movement of mission-empowering relationships by deepening and developing pastors as spiritual leaders. Connect Coaching, networking, and supporting churches toward greater health and missional vitality has been our focus since 2009, resulting in 165 churches covenanting with TM in purposeful and meaningful ways. Church planting partnerships initiated by the Ministry take connections above and beyond common relationship dynamics, and grow the Kingdom. Unite and Gather Throughout September, October, and November, TM is holding Awareness Events with partner ministries: Atherton Baptist Homes, Christian Community Credit Union, The Cutler Group, International Ministries and Wealth Solutions. These Awareness Events, held in locations throughout California and Arizona, will highlight the benefits of unity. Come and discuss your options for retirement living, financial needs, insurance needs, as well as how TM can help every church. Transforming Churches Conference October 17 and 18 brought us to the Transforming Churches Conference at the First Baptist Church of Downey. We hope you were able to come, connect with old friends, and make new ones. Grateful By Ron and Joyce Winterberg We have been involved in Transformation Ministries (TM) since its transition and inception from the ministry of the American Baptist Churches of the Pacific Southwest. We chose to align ourselves with TM because we believe in its mission statement. We are members of Oasis Community Church in Scottsdale, Arizona, a TM-affiliated church, and we are grateful for the help TM provided when it merged with another church. The church has subsequently grown and expanded ministry to provide the light of God in the greater Phoenix area. Joyce is still serving God in Women’s Ministry at Oasis, and Ron is on the Mission board at Oasis. We look forward to what God is going to accomplish through TM. A new church is full of vigor to reach out to its neighbors, is on fire to become a strong part of the community, loves to share God, His Word, and His passion. Planting a new church is a very intense undertaking. It’s a lot like starting a new business, a new family, and a new school all at once. TM has experienced people leading this process who love the Lord, and understand the needs throughout the journey. I have experienced the course of action, met the people, and have great admiration for the systems they have put into practice. The average cost to start a new church and get it running on its own is $37,500, and the goal of our Golf Tournament Committee is to start as many as possible with each tournament. Please join us and get involved. Let me know if there is anyone you know who has a heart for golf, church planting, and the means to give or help with our tournament. 1.800.229.3448 [email protected] Spotlight On … Administrative Support Team Manager Kelly Holt joined the Ministry in February 2013 to lead the administrative support and office operations of Transformation Ministries. She worshipped in this church until her death in 2009. Following World War II, Bruce Gregory came to the church when he was discharged from the Air Force. He met his beloved wife, Dorothy, at church, and married her on Valentine’s Day in 1947, remaining an active member until his death in 2011. Both Mom and Dad (Dorothy and Bruce) were active and very involved in many ministries of the church. They spoke of new churches that the church helped plant, and how Mom wore out her shoes walking the neighborhoods telling people about the Lord and these new plants. As they neared the end of their lives, they spoke often of what ministries they would support with a portion of their estate, and new church planting was their choice. A portion of their estate went to The Bridge, a new church plant started by their grandson in Centerville, Utah. Mom and Dad were also very supportive of Transformation Ministries (TM), and it seemed natural to use part of their estate to help support a new TM church plant, Grace Church in Henderson, Nevada. I had the privilege of working with Doug Meye during my years at TM. I saw his passion for the Lord, and his prior success in church planting. Knowing TM and Doug Meye made this decision very easy for our family. I believe support is a great investment for the Kingdom, and I know the Lord will abundantly bless these funds because of the dedication of those involved in this new ministry. May God richly bless the leadership and ministries of Grace Church and Transformation Ministries. Increasing Ministry Gift Planning We all know how significant gift planning is to the life of the church. There are tools available to help increase giving. Most people write a check, put cash in an envelope, or give online for their tithe. Many churches believe this is the only way to receive a gift. Fortunately, there are numerous ways we’d like to share with you. One way, in particular, helps the donors who don’t have much income, and may own individual stocks. By giving the stock directly to the church, the donor does not pay capital gains tax, and they may be able to keep their monthly income. People doing estate planning (wills, trusts and power of attorneys) typically divide assets among the children in equal percentages. However, having the church listed as a beneficiary in retirement accounts and annuities, which are outside the trust, will save the children on income taxes, and give more to the church. Families with sizable assets should consider a Charitable Remainder Trust. This is a wonderful way to avoid capital gains tax, receive large tax deductions, give more to the church and possibly leave more to the family. Because these ideas are outside the “normal” way to give, Transformation Ministries wants to partner with covenanting churches to assist with gift planning. It is important for all churches to learn to take advantage of these tools so it can continue feeding its flock for years to come. The focus of what we do comes directly from Acts chapter 13, and consists of supporting church planters and leaders by implementing ten (10) systems: Spiritual Vitality; Funding; Recruiting; Assessing; Vision Alignment; Training; Coaching; Caring; Creativity; and Partnering. Launching Leaders and Churches In the last year, we’ve had twelve (12) candidate couples and individuals go through our Discovery Center — helping them determine if church planting was their next step in ministry. We also hosted our first ever Discovery Center in Covina during February 2013, and we plan to offer one in Southern California every year. Several of the planters who were recommended to plant at the Discovery Center have received feedback from our Vision Alignment Team, and have either contracted with TM to start a new church or are in process. Those include Daryl McKillian in Santa Monica, Israel Martinez in La Habra, Héctor Diaz in Riverside, and Daniel Nuñez in Mexico. Recently Launched Churches Pastor City State La Promesa Baptist Church (2011) Mario Huipe Fullerton CA Mercy Road Church (2011) Josh Husmann Indianapolis IN Fellowship Monrovia (2012) Albert Tate Monrovia CA Grace Church (2012) Douglas Meye Henderson NV Iglesia Nueva Vida (2013) Israel Martinez La Habra CA Victory Christian Fellowship (2013) Daryl McKillian Santa Monica CA Establishing and Refining Systems We have worked hard to implement several of the Church Planting systems. In addition to the Discovery Centers, we have held five (5) Church Planter Cluster meetings this year. The Clusters are a gathering of church planters and potential planters. It is our primary “Caring” system piece. Additionally, we have seen a good number of Spanish speaking leaders come our way, and we’re getting ready to launch our first Spanish speaking Church Planter Cluster this fall. A Rich Experience By Daryl McKillian, Pastor, Victory Christian Fellowship of Santa Monica The partnership with TM in church planting has been a rich experience both personally and ecclesiastically. Personally, the Discovery Center week provided a mirror – for my wife and me to look at ourselves – to see whether we had really been called to plant a church. It also provided a window into the immediate future highlighting the joys and challenges of church planting. The interaction with TM staff was phenomenal and changed the trajectory of our ministry. Ecclesiastically, TM has provided the three (3) resources we so desperately needed. First, I know JD and the Team are praying for us which gives us the spiritual covering we need. Second, the financial support made it possible for us to be firmly positioned. Third, the strategic resources made available to us uniquely impacted our communities for Christ. 18 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 The TM “Coaching” system for church planters continues to work well with planters and coaches connecting regularly, as well as during Cluster events. The Vision Alignment Team helps planters work through their church plant proposals and contracts. The “Partnering” system helps planters get involved serving others, and helps us recruit planters and churches for TM. There are two (2) potential affiliations with new churches on the horizon, and we have worked hard to update our “Funding” system to provide help for planters as they launch their works. It’s a privilege to serve the planters and potential partners in TM, and I look forward to celebrating all that God continues to do! Invaluable Support By Duncan Davidson, Pastor, The Journey Church of Santa Maria Church planting can be a very difficult process; however, the support Transformation Ministries (TM) provided to The Journey Church has been invaluable! The cluster meetings have proven to be a place of encouragement, support and networking where I was able to receive ideas from other church planters. The networking and resources provided by TM was deeply helpful in the early years of our plant. I have found my biggest cheerleaders to be the TM staff and other TM pastors. I am grateful for every commitment the Ministry made to The Journey Church. They fulfilled every promise, and as a result of their commitment and vision for church planting, lives have been changed in Santa Maria! Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 19 Privileged to Coach Church Planters By Jake Harder, Church Planting Coach Nearly one year ago, three (3) church planters attended a Discovery Center (DC) in Elk Grove, California. During those informative four (4) days, the DC staff confirmed that church planting was, indeed, a great fit for three (3) pastors I am now privileged to coach: Israel Martinez in La Habra, Victor Almanza in Riverside, and Héctor Diaz in San Bernardino. Each are in different stages of their church plants: one just starting out with a home group, another recently holding their public launch, while another has already begun to plant a second church near Mexico City. Along with other planters, they come together for bi-monthly Church Planter Cluster meetings consisting of training, support, and community hosted by TM leadership. With a steadily rising Latino population in California, these three (3) leaders and others have stepped into church planting, sacrificing much along the way so their neighbors, colleagues, and others have opportunity to know life in Christ! Encouraged by the Leadership of TM By Daniel Nuñez, Church Planter in Mexico When I was invited to come to a Transformation Ministries (TM) Church Planters Cluster in Anaheim last year, I didn’t know what to expect, but it has been a blessing. I have received a lot of ideas to lead my network of church plants based out of Tijuana, but, most importantly, I have been encouraged by the leadership of TM, and am able to keep going strong and find more ways to encourage the local pastors on their journey. Thank you for supporting me and the work that God is doing in this part of the world. It never ceases to amaze me how impactful camp ministry is in transforming lives. Because of Christian camping, relationships were deepened, walls were broken down, and thousands of people started a brand new relationship with Jesus Christ while others recommitted themselves to following Him. Over 8,000 young people enjoyed a summer Christian Camp experience this year in a TM camp. In the past year, our three (3) very unique camps (San Marcos, Tonto Rim and Thousand Pines) saw increased ministry to literally tens of thousands of people of all ages. The highlights are seen in some of the evaluations, emails and comments that come to the staff each week. The few comments in this article testify that the Lord is touching people. Be encouraged. God is at work! Camp Improvements Our three (3) camps experienced significant physical improvements and change this past year: the dedication and opening of the Whittier Worship Center at Thousand Pines (a 245-person meeting room); a new water well at San Marcos abundantly providing all the water needed; and Tonto Rim’s upgraded cabin Interiors. Our camps are growing, improving and expanding. If you haven’t been to one of our camps lately, take a drive and enjoy a visit or tour. We’d love to have you! She supports the Ministry by assisting with conferencing, publications, management of Transformation Ministries Facebook, and is the Managing Editor of TM’s bi-monthly E-formation newsletter. Elenna has experience in the health care industry, as well as coordinating and fundraising services to various students and women’s ministries. She is Mom to two sons, Gregory (20) and Nicholas (16). In her spare time, she enjoys socializing with family and friends, participating in Bible study groups, reading, movie watching, and catching up with far-flung friends on Facebook. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 21 “I was feeling a great distance from God and doubting my faith. My time at Thousand Pines was like a new dawn in my life. I met with the Lord and I am going home changed.” (From a Men’s Camp conferee) “Every student in my cabin made a significant decision this week. If someone had told me we would come back a completely new group, I don’t think I would have had the faith to believe it!” “I was struggling with questions and doubts. After a long and peaceful walk through the forest, God met me in a very profound and personal way.” (From a Men’s Camp evaluation) (From a Youth Pastor’s evaluation) “I get it! For the first time in my life, it all makes sense to me...Thank you, God, for meeting me here this week!” (From our McKee Chapel memorial book) “We came to camp a divided church...we left united and with renewed hope.” (From a Pastor’s email) “I’ll go home with a forever changed heart. You have changed my life and family.” (From a Family Camp evaluation) The Blessing of Summer Camp Staff Every summer Thousand Pines gets flooded with campers, counselors and seasonal staff desiring a deeper relationship with Christ. We have over 100 summer staff each year at our three (3) camps who serve long hours with great dedication and attitudes. Stories are told each week of campers committing their lives to Jesus, and the Holy Spirit prompting students and counselors to serve in ministry. This became more evident during orientation when the staff was prompted to raise their hand if they had been a camper at Thousand Pines. As you glanced around the room, the majority of the college-aged staff experienced God on the same soil on which they now are called to serve. They had been impacted because of the work other staff had done in previous years. Whether or not they got to see any immediate result of their service this summer, they poured into others because someone poured into them. 22 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 Financial Health of the Ministry By Caryn Ryan, Missionwell, Accounting Partner / Chief Financial Officer Services In the same way that effective discipleship takes focus and intentionality, we approach the financial situation of Transformation Ministries (TM) with focus and intentionality. Operations We give thanks for all of you who have worked hard to meet your covenant. Expenses in the first half of 2013 are up due to the need to pay off a church loan for which TM was the guarantor, and also for legal fees. Other than these unusual expense items, TM is heading for a year of steady improvement in operation results. TM’s Net Income Detail 2011 2012 Through June 2013 Operating Income -788 -841 -411 Non-Operating Income* -109 849 -129 Net Income without Camping Ministry -897 8 -540 Camping Ministry 114 441 228 Total Net Income -783 449 -312 *Without Camping Ministry The 2012 deficit from operations was $841,000, and was a result of: •Lower church giving ($135,000) which was mainly in Church TM Mission Giving •Lower grants to Burundi ($21,000) with funding previously aggregated by TM •Lower relief grants ($20,000) since more emergencies were funded in 2011 •Forgiveness of a portion of a church loan in 2011 ($50,000) In 2013, the deficit from operations was $411,000 for the first half of the year through June. This is slightly higher than it was at this time in 2012, and about the same as in 2011. The good news is that TM Mission Giving was up during the first half of 2013 versus 2012. Non-Operating Non-operating items include gains and losses on property, investment, and notes. Since the timing of these is not predictable, and may go up or down from year to year, we manage by focusing steadily to the operating income. This doesn’t stop our thankfulness that in 2012 there was enough non-operating income to completely eliminate the operating deficit. The biggest factor increasing non-operating income, during 2012, related to pre-sale appraisals of value of the Flagstaff and Lompoc properties yielding gains of $599,000. Camps have experienced a significant improvement in net income over the past few years. In particular, Tonto Rim has moved from a loss position, in 2010, to -$242,000 of income in 2012. At mid-year 2013, all the camps are on track for a strong year. Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 | 23 Church TM Mission Giving Church TM Mission Giving is the single most important source of funding for TM, and is twenty-five percent (25%) of TM’s annual income revenue. Assuming the positive TM Mission Giving trends seen in early 2013 continue, Mission giving should grow by over 10% from year end 2012 levels. Church TM Mission Giving 2007 652 2008 555 2009 489 2010 429 2011 475 2012 425 2013 470 $0 $100 $200 $300 $400 $500 $600 $700 Operating Competencies Expenditure Nearly half of TM’s funds are used for its three (3) core competencies: Developing Pastoral Leaders; Church Health and Missional Vitality; and Church Planting Partnerships. These are described elsewhere in the Annual Ministry Report. A new area of focus is Development, which relates to how TM connects and communicates with the church community and other stakeholders, including connecting gifts and special events. 2012 Spending on Operating Competencies, % ■ Church Planting Partnerships ■ Developing pastoral Leaders ■ Church Health and Mission Vitality ■ Development ■ Operational Competency and General* *Lease income not included A Letter of Thanks from a Gospel Partner By Bill Magsig and Joshua Kirstine, Olive Drive Church of Bakersfield On behalf of the Board of Elders of Olive Drive Church, we are writing to tell you that we recently received funds from a gift given to our church. In deciding how to best steward these funds, we took into consideration the period in 2010-2011 when we were unable to send our pledged monthly support [TM Mission Giving] due to a budget crisis. In light of this, and after prayerful consideration, we want to give this one-time gift as a way for us as a church to say, “Thank you,” for all you are doing to equip churches. Please know that Transformation Ministries continues to have the full support and prayers of Olive Drive Church. Keep up the great Kingdom work you are doing! 24 | Transformation Ministries ANNUAL MINISTRY REPORT 2012/2013 Resources to Mission Over time, some significant shifts are occurring in resources to mission. This chart shows how resources were allocated in 2011, 2012 and the first half of 2013. As you can see, development is receiving a larger percent of resources, according to plan. In the long run, investment in this area will contribute to TM’s health as greater engagement will lead to supplemental resources, both people and finances. Resources to Mission: 2011 - June 2013 Operational Competency and General* Operational Development Church Health and Mission Vitality 2011 Developing Pastoral Leaders 2012 2013 thru June Church Planting Partnerships *Lease income not included 0% 10% 20% 30% 40% 50% 60% Investment Performance This chart shows how TM’s “savings accounts” have changed over the past years. In 2011 and 2012, withdrawals used to fund operations significantly exceeded income and market value changes. At mid-year 2012, the account was near $4 million. Due to the sale of the Flagstaff property, there was a significantly reduced need to tap “savings” in the first half of the year, and some funding was temporarily returned to the investment account. Funding from savings will be required in the second half of 2013, but this will still be a better year than 2011 or 2012 with fewer withdrawals from savings.
