Established in 2005, our service center and staff assist expatriates and their families during their stay in Korea. Located on the 3rd floor of the HHI Culture Building, the FLIK Service Center is open on weekdays from 8 am to 6 pm. FLIK also provides a hotline service for emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (HHI) was founded in 1972. It has maintained a leading position in the global shipbuilding industry since 1985. HHI spun off from the Hyundai Business Group and in 2002, formed the Hyundai Heavy Industries Group, which consists of HHI, Hyundai Mipo Dockyards, and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries. HHI has established itself as an integrated heavy industries company with six business divisions: Shipbuilding, Offshore & Engineering, Industrial Plant & Engineering, Engine & Machinery, Electro Electric Systems, and Construction Equipment. Over the past few decades HHI has built more than 1,200 vessels totaling 107 million dwt, including 10,000 TEU containerships, Very Large Crude Oil Carriers, LNG carriers, an Aegis Destroyer, and submarines. You can sign up through the eFLIK website. FLIK Korean Classes Held once a week, FLIK Korean Classes help teach the fundamentals of the Korean language. Hyundai Heavy Industries Part II - Living Conditions & Tips 1. Accommodations 1 This newly constructed apartment complex is located next to HHI’s Offshore Fabrication yard. The NFA offers 180 apartments with various facilities including a gym, squash court, conference hall, restaurant, and bar for its residents. To use the facilities please check the pin code or make a reservation on the eFLIK website. Clubhouse 052-252-9596 Located inside the apartment complex, the clubhouse is the center of community life at the NFA. The clubhouse restaurant serves delicious meals for lunch and dinner. The compound is equipped with many facilities, including a clubhouse, a driving range, a swimming pool, and a fitness room, for its residents. Clubhouse The clubhouse is the heart of the compound community and helps forge strong relationships among the residents. Here you can learn the latest news and information about various events and activities. The Clubhouse Courier is published every week to inform residents of community news and activities. There are several tourist spots near the hotel, such as Sogumgang Valley and Seonkyojang Village. 061- 463-2233 Opened in 2006, it is the best hotel in Jeonnam, Korea’s southwestern province. Located on a small hill next to a beach, all 208 rooms feature beautiful views of gorgeous sunrises or sunsets, Mount Mudeung, or the sea. Hotel Good Morning/ 5 052-209-9000 Located behind Hyundai Hotel Ulsan, the hotel has 75 bedrooms, a coffee shop, and a restaurant. 054-748-2233 Hyundai Hotel Gyeongju is one of the best hotels in the ancient city of Gyeongju. The beautiful scenery of the lakeside hotel is sure to please you. 6. Hyundai Hotel Mokpo/ 7. Hotel Ocean View/ 052-251-2233 Located across the street from HHI’s main entrance, the hotel has 284 bedrooms and various facilities including a swimming pool, a sauna, various restaurants and a bar. Topaz, a buffet restaurant, is a favorite of foreigners due to its delicious Western and Korean dishes (see Restaurant section for details). 4. Hyundai Hotel Gyeongju/ Other Hotels 9. LOTTE Hotel/ 052-960-1000 Located in downtown Ulsan (Samsan-dong), it is a multiplex building with a movie theater and a department store. 10. Taehwa hotel/ 052-273-3301 The oldest hotel in Ulsan, the Taehwa is located in the middle of Ulsan’s old downtown district. You can easily access any place you want to go from here. In front of the hotel is the airport bus to Busan’s Gimhae International Airport and the buses for the Ulsan City Tour. Education 052-250-2851 http://hfs.hhi.co.kr Hyundai Heavy Industries established the Hyundai Foreign School (HFS) in September 1982. It was built to provide primary education to the children of resident representatives of HHI’s clients. HFS is a regular member of the European Council of International Schools (ECIS). The school is registered with the Department for Education and Skills in the UK-DfES No. 7036156. The school is a member of the CIE (Cambridge International Examinations) and is a registered Cambridge International Centre. The school comprises three two-story buildings. These are adjacent to each other; the Kindergarten building being linked to the main school by a covered walkway. There are nine bright and spacious classrooms, a well-resourced library, a kitchen and canteen, two ICT rooms, a science lab, an art room, two learning support rooms, a hall and a secure playground. All the rooms have airconditioning and heating. The school has the use of the adjoining tennis court during the school day and has access to many sporting facilities in the local area. The school is staffed by fully qualified and experienced expatriate teachers with wide experience both in the U.K. and overseas. The school is represented, at management level, by HHI staff from the Overseas Public Relations Department. Part II - Living Conditions & Tips | 10 2. HHI Daycare Center/ 7 The HHI Daycare Center is located near the Hyundai Arts Center and features new facilities for up to 166 children. The center includes a nursing room, a cafeteria, a computer room, a library, an auditorium, outdoor amenities, and a garden. The children are under the instruction of professional teachers, and an in-house nurse is available to check on their health. - Age of children: 6 months-4 years - Open 07:00-19:30 - Closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and Holidays For more information, please contact the FLIK Service Center. 3. Young Kim’s Taekwondo Institute 8 052-252-8847, 010-6250-9944 Taekwondo is Korea’s traditional martial art. This institute has a skilled master who speaks English well. Lesson Hours: Monday-Friday, 11:00-21:30 Monthly Lesson Fee: 90,000 9 4. Munhwa Taekwondo Institute/ 052-251-1245 This institute is located in Seobu-dong and is the largest in the Dong-gu area. The master speaks English and several foreigners’ children attend the institute. Lessons are one hour every day from Monday to Friday. Fried Chicken You can see many street vendors throughout Korea offering a full range of Korean snacks. One of the most popular street foods is ‘Tteokbokgi’, rice cakes mixed with sweet, spicy Korean red pepper paste. Other famous snacks include ‘Umuk’, fish ball soup, ‘Twigim’, fried food, ‘Hotteok’, a hot pancake with black sugar syrup, and ‘Sundae’, Korean sausage. Korean fried chicken is very popular. Many people can’t drink beer without it! There are many delivery services available at most of the chicken restaurants, but English communication is very rare. The BBQ Chicken House is one of the better shops as it uses olive oil when they cook their chicken. Don’t miss the chance to eat tasty Korean fried chicken when you walk past a chicken shop. The price is usually about 12,000 for one order of fried chicken. Gimbap, a Korean-style California Roll, is one of the most famous Korean foods. Seaweed surrounds sticky rice, which is rolled around various vegetables, sausage, tuna, or cheese. Basic Gimbap usually costs 1,000 and is available at the many 24 hour Gimbap shops. Prices vary according to extra ingredients within the rice roll. 3. Hansot Lunch Box/ 10 You can choose from several Korean dishes, including Bulgogi, pork cutlets, curry, fried fish with rice, or kimchi fried rice. All dishes are very reasonably priced and ready in a short time. Prices range from 1,500- 4,000. 4. Mandu/ Mandu is Korean-style dumplings. Gogi (mixed meat) Mandu and Kimchi Mandu are the most popular, and you can choose either fried or steamed Mandu. There are several Mandu stores along the streets in Nammok and near the main gates of HHI’s Electro Electric Systems Division. The price is typically 2,500 for ten pieces of Mandu. LOTTERIA 11 052-236-3811, http://www.lotteria.com/ It is one of the most famous fast food chains in Korea and is located between Ilsan beach and Ulsan College. Hours: 10:00-22:00 Price: Burger 1,600- 5,000 Set Menu 3,200- 5,500 7. McDonald’s 12 052-235-7607 McDonald’s is located right next to the Hyundai Arts Center and is open 24 hours. The breakfast menu is available from 05:00-11:00. During lunch (11:00-14:00) you can have an entire burger set for between 3,000- 3,500. 052-250-4932 8. Burger King 13 Burger King is located in the basement food court at the Hyundai Department Store (Dong-gu). Hours: 10:30-20:00 Price: Burger 1,700- Whopper Set 5,400 9. Baskin Robbins You can taste 31 kinds of ice cream at Baskin Robbins. There are two shops in Dong-gu, one in the basement food court of Hyundai Department Store Dong-gu( 13 ), and the other in Jeonha-dong( 14). Pizza Hut/ 052-252-8232,3 16 Pizza Hut has a good selection of pizzas, pastas, and side dishes, but it is very expensive. Pizza Hut is in the Dong-gu district, along the main road near Ilsan Beach. You can also phone for delivery. Hours: 11:30-23:00 Price: Pasta 7,900- 8,900 Pizza 20,000- (medium size) 30,000- (family size) Salad Bar 8,900 (up to 4 people, buffet-style) 2. Mr. Pizza/ 17 052-251 5588 Mr. Pizza is one of the best Korean pizza chains, offering delicious pizza and pasta at a fairly reasonable price. Mr. Pizza is located along the main road in Nammok. Delivery service is available but you can get a 20% discount if you pick up the pizza yourself. Domino’s Pizza/ Domino’s is a true American taste and is a favorite among foreigners. There is no dining room at the location, which is along the main road near Ilsan beach. Delivery is available, but you receive a 20% discount if you order the pizza by phone and pick it up yourself. Pizza Etang/ Pizza Etang is one of the cheapest places to enjoy pizza that is still very delicious. There are two Pizza Etangs in Dong-gu: one in Nammok (052-233-6777, for HFC 19 ) and the other is near Ulsan College, towards Bangeojin (052-236-0003 for NFA 20 ). Delivery service is available and you can order two pizzas at a much cheaper price. Misarang Imsilcheese Pizza/ This newly opened (summer, 2007) pizza shop is located near McDonald’s. Instead of imported flour, it uses rice dough and fresh ingredients produced locally. Delivery service is available and you get a free coke when you place a delivery order. (1.5L for large or family size, 0.5L for regular size) Hours: 11:00-22:00 Price: Pasta 4,000- 5,000 Pizza Regular 11,000- Large 15,000- Family 20,000- Restaurants 1. Dong-gu Area 3 052-250-6041 Topaz/ Topaz is a buffet restaurant at the Hyundai Hotel recommended by most foreigners. If you want to taste both Korean and Western cuisine, this place is worth a visit. It is the fanciest, and most expensive, Japanese restaurant in the area. Price: Sushi 60,000Course Menu 40,000- 50,000 Bento (Lunch Box) 20,000Hours: Lunch 12:00-14:00, Dinner 18:00-22:00 22 Ye Won/ 052-235-2127 Ye Won is a restaurant located in the basement of the Hyundai Arts Center. It has many seats for groups and individuals. Hot stone pot Bulgogi (Gob Dol Bulgogi in Korean) is their most popular dish. It is welllit with sunlight. It serves popular Korean dishes such as Bulgogi, Galbi, soups, and more. Hours: 09:30-21:30 Price: Bulgogi Set 10,000 Galbi Set 20,000- 25,000 Soup 6,500 13 Sapporo/ 052-234-2233 Located on the 5th floor of Hyundai Department Store, Sapporo serves various types of cutlets, sushi, and noodles. Hours: 09:30-21:30 Price: 7,500- 15,000 23 Galbi Mart/ 052-234-3322 Galbi is marinated Korean ribs. Located in Bangeo-dong, Galbi Mart offers an unlimited supply of 15 fresh vegetables when you order Galbi. It has a large parking lot, and you can also ask for a pick-up service when you make a group reservation. It serves various pastas, steaks and course menus. Reservations can be made via phone. It is located in Seobu-dong. Hours: 10:00-22:00 Price: 6,000/ person 26 Harimgak/ 052-251-2288 This Korean-style Chinese restaurant serves many dishes including Jajangmyeon (Korean-style Chinese noodles, ) and various courses of shrimp, seafood, meat, and more. Hours: 10:00-22:00 Price: 6,000- (noodles or fried rice) 65,000 (course menu for 3 people) 25,000- 45,000 (shrimp dishes) 27 052-251-3500 Dong-gyeong Fish/ A favorite Korean dish is ‘raw fish’, called ‘Hwoi’. The restaurant is located in the Seobu-dong restaurant alley and serves fresh raw fish with various side dishes. When foreigners make a group reservation, meat and grilled fish can also be prepared for those who are not used to raw fish. Its main dish, diced spicy chicken breasts, called chicken ‘ribs’, is another favorite with foreigners and goes well with beer and soju. After eating the chicken you can order fried rice to mix with the remaining sauce. Hours: 16:00-23:00 I Price: Spicy Chicken Ribs 4,500/ person 29 Juk Story/ 052-232-6500 One of the healthier Korean dishes is ‘Juk’, rice stew with various ingredients that can include pumpkin, oyster, tuna, crab, meat, red beans, and more. Today you can also get non-traditional dishes such as ‘chicken cheese Juk’. Juk is a good dish for people having stomach troubles. Juk Story is located next to McDonald’s. Take out service is available. Hours: 08:00-21:00 I Price: 5,000- 15,000 30 Bon Juk/ 052-232-6629 Bon Juk is another ‘Juk’ restaurant along the main street in Nammok. It offers various Juk dishes. Hours: 10:30-21:00 I Price: 1,500- 2,500 32 052-233-3177 Jin Mi/ Jin Mi is run by a Chinese-Korean family. It serves handmade dumplings and duck dishes. It is located near the Good Morning Hotel. Takeout is available. Korean seafood stews are very spicy! Hours: 12:00-22:00 Price: Soup 20,000- 30,000 Stew 20,000- 35,000 (One dish feeds 3-4 people) 38 Jin Si Hwang/ 052-201-3369 This Chinese restaurant is located on the right side of the main Ggotbawi road and is popular with many foreigners. Delivery service is available. Hours: 11:00-21:00 Price: 3,000- 6,000 (for noodles and fried rice) 39 052-201-1912 Dong Hae Ban Jeom/ Dong Hae Ban Jeom is another popular Chinese restaurant near the offshore yard. Lunch time reservations are needed. It is located near Kim’s Villa. Hours: 12:00-21:00 (sometimes closes earlier without notice) Price: 6,000- 25,000 052-236-6222 Boo Restaurant 35 This restaurant is in Jeonha-dong and serves several western dishes such as steak, pizza, and Mexican food. It is located in Bangeo-dong. Hours: 18:00-02:00 Price: Beer 5,000- 37 Hae Song Sushi/ 052-251-8883 It is located near Ilsan beach and serves Japanese dishes. On weekdays you need to make a reservation via phone since many company dinners are held here. Most PC Bangs are open 24 hours and cost about 1,000/ hour. 2. Norae Bang ( Dong Cheon Gymnasium (Basketball Court) / Korea’s pro basketball league starts in October and ends in March. Dong Cheon Gymnasium, located near MEGA MART, is home to Ulsan’s team, the Hyundai Mobis. Instead of singing in front of strangers, however, people go with their friends and get a private room; this way you only sing in front of people you know. Samgyetang/ Samgyetang is a nutritious soup that is especially popular during the summer. Traditionally Koreans have been eaten hot meat dishes, such as Samgyetang, on the three hottest days of the year to increase their stamina. A bowl of Samgyetang has one small chicken, rice, ginseng, garlic, and jujubes. )& Experiencing a Korean public bathhouse is a truly pleasurable experience. Koreans love public bathhouses, and most people visit one at least once a week (except during the summer season). Men and women have separate areas, which they enjoy while nude. There are several pools at a bathhouse with different temperatures or different mineral contents. Before entering the pool, you need to take a shower. Body scrubbing is also part of Korean baths. Using a special towel, people scrub their bodies to remove dirt and dead skin. Most bathhouses also offer a body scrubbing service for 15,000- 20,000. The body scrub usually lasts an hour body and includes a massage. Jjimjilbangs, or saunas, are similar to the bathhouses. They are a popular way to relax for Koreans. There are many public bathhouses that also offer saunas. Unlike the baths, people wear pajama-like outfits and men and women use the same saunas. There are many saunas that differ according to temperature, minerals, or the material of the room’s walls. Part IV - Useful Information Soju/ In Korean, the only thing more beloved than Soju is Kimchi. Soju, a traditional alcohol unique to Korea, is the most popular drink in the country. The average amount of alcohol is about 21%, and each province has its own taste or brand of Soju. It goes especially well with Samgyepsal (barbequed pork), but Koreans are not afraid to drink it with any other dish. 6. Unlike western societies, Korean women don’t change their family names after marriage. 8. National Holidays Month Jan. day 1 - Before entering a Korean house, shoes must always be taken off. - Sharing food from one bowl is thought to make relationships closer. Feb. Seol (Lunar New Year’s, a 3-day holiday based on the lunar calendar, so the dates change annually):Seol is one of the two most important traditional holidays in Korea. Many shops are closed and highways are packed with cars as people visit their hometowns to see their family. During Seol, people eat ‘Tteokguk’ (rice cake soup) and do ‘Saebae’ (deep, traditional bows to elders). This is one of the happiest days for children as they receive ‘Saebaedon’ (money given after Saebae) from adults. March 1 Independence Movement Day This day commemorates the Declaration of Independence proclaimed on March 1, 1919, when Korea was under Japanese rule. The peaceful movement took place in Seoul and influenced other Asian nations’ independence movements. 5 Children’s Day:This is one of the happiest days for children. Parents bring children to amusement parks or zoos and buy gifts for them. - Koreans love the color white and don’t use red ink when writing a person’s name. Red is only used for people who have passed away. - Patting children on the back or on the head is very common and expresses warm feelings. - The Korean language uses honorifics. There is an obvious distinction between formal and causal expressions. Formal expressions are used towards elders or unfamiliar people; causal expressions are used between friends. Formal expressions usually end with “Yo”. - Blowing one’s nose in front of others is not considered good manners in Korea. - Throughout its long history, Korea has respected the elderly. It’s very common in Korea to see younger people give their seats to older people on the bus. When you give or receive something to or from someone older, you should use two hands. - While talking with someone older, it is considered very rude to look straight at them. Buddha’s Birthday (Changes according to the lunar calendar):As Korea has believed in Buddhism for a long period, it celebrates Buddha’s Birthday, which is the 8th day of the 4th lunar month. Streets and temples are decorated with beautiful lanterns. On the Sunday evening before Buddha’s Birthday, there are parades that include Buddhist Decorations and lanterns. Foreign Community Annual Gatherings June July Aug. day 6 17 Constitution Day This day is to commemorate the proclamation of Korea’s Constitution, which was set on July 17, 1948. 15 Liberation Day This day commemorates Korea’s independence from Japanese rule in 1945. Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving, a 3-day holiday based on the lunar calendar, so the dates change annually) Chuseok is one of the two most important traditional holidays. It is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month. Korea had been an agricultural society until the 1960’s. Chuseok is a holiday celebrating the year’s harvest. There’s a ritual ceremony to people’s ancestors, and people make Sonpyun (crescent-shaped rice cakes). Like Seol, highways are jammed with cars as people visit their hometowns. Sept. Oct. Dec. Month Memorial Day This day is to honor the soldiers and civilians who lost their lives during the Korean War. 3 25 Part IV - Useful Information | 76 National Foundation Day This day is to commemorate the creation of Korea, in 2333 B.C., by the legendary god-king Dangun. Christmas Christmas is an official holiday in Korea. Jan. Burns’ Night:This is to celebrate the birthday of Robbie Burns, the Scottish Bard. It is hosted by the Ulsan Dead Poets Society. Holi Festival:Holi, the exuberant festival of color, is celebrated by the Indian community to welcome the advent of Spring. March Mardi Gras:Mardi Gras, or Fat Tuesday, is a day of feasting and partying that ends on Ash Wednesday, which is the beginning of Lent and its 40 days of fasting and abstinence. April Ulsan Hyundai Climbathon:HHI holds the Ulsan Hyundai Climbathon every year. The course is 11.6 km long and covers road and mountain trails in the Dong-gu area. May Spring Festival:FLIK has held an annual ‘International Supervisors Spring Festival’ every year since 2003. The festival includes great food, beverages, and snacks, as well as games, events, and prizes. It is loved by HHI’s foreign workers and their families. Sept. Pirates Day:This event celebrates the last day to use the swimming pool at Hyundai Foreigner’s Compound (HFC, Seobu-dong). Oct. Halloween:The HFC and parents open a haunted house for kids. Charity Bazaar:FLIK participates in HHI’s charity bazaar, opening a Foreigner’s Store with the collections from from the foreigner’s community. Every year ladies from HFC have participated in the event and the money raised is donated to the needy in Ulsan. Dec. Kimchi-Making Day:Kimjang is the traditional kimchi-making day, where kimchi is prepared and allowed to ferment over the winter, to be eaten the following year. HHI holds ‘Kimchi-Making Day’ to help raise money for the poor. Ladies from the foreign community have participated in this event every year. Over the years the team has played many matches in local or HHI employee’s leagues. It now plays regular soccer games twice a month at the Seobu Soccer Field. Ulsan Hash House Harriers The Ulsan Hash House Harriers have been in existence for nearly 30 years. They hold regular hikes and runs through nearby mountains every 2nd Sunday. Newcomers are always welcome, and after three runs hashers are given hash names to prove their membership. Hashes leave from the Seobu-dong Clubhouse at 10:00 am, but if you’re a newcomer please be there 15 minutes early so that you have enough time to sign up. They meet at 10:30 on Tuesdays & Thursdays at the Seobu-dong Clubhouse. If you are new to Ulsan, this is an excellent way to meet other mothers with young children and share information. Ladies of Ulsan Coffee Morning The weekly coffee morning at the Bangeojin Clubhouse is held every Wednesday at 10am. The meeting is a good chance to make friends and share information about shopping, living tips and more. There’s a participation fee of 1,000, and coffee & snacks are provided.
