are also tambourines for those less musically
inclined. Drinks and snacks are available in most
Norae Bangs and singing costs 15,000 per hour and up. You can look at the

2. Taxis
Taxis are quite cheap in Korea. The basic charge
is 1,800 for the first 2 kilometers. There’s an
extra charge added after midnight. If you can
speak a few Korean words or show the driver
your destination he or she will take you to the
right place. For basic “taxi vocabulary”, please
see our “useful expressions” section. Popular destinations are usually
understandable, although you may have to try pronouncing it a couple of times
before you are understood.

Korean cuisine is made up of rice, soup, and three to four side dishes, including
Kimchi. Koreans use a spoon to eat rice and soup, and chopsticks for side
dishes. Koreans don’t hold their bowls or plates while eating. We believe
sharing food from one bowl makes for closer relationships.

You can’t say that you’ve been to Korea if you
haven’t tried Kimchi, a fermented vegetable dish
that can be stored for a long time. There are many
varieties of Kimchi that differ due to region
and/or ingredients. Although Kimchi is a basic
side dish, it can also be a major ingredient in other popular dishes, such as
Kimchi Jjikae (Kimchi stew), Kimchi pancakes, Kimchi fried rice, and Kimchi
ramyeon. Kimchi is gaining worldwide popularity for its nutritional value.

Galbi/
Galbi is ribs, which can be either stewed or
barbecued.
Samgyetang/
Samgyetang is a nutritious soup that is especially
popular during the summer. Traditionally Koreans
have been eaten hot meat dishes, such as
Samgyetang, on the three hottest days of the
year to increase their stamina. A bowl of
Samgyetang has one small chicken, rice, ginseng, garlic, and jujubes.

Experiencing a Korean public
bathhouse is a truly pleasurable experience. Koreans love
public bathhouses, and most
people visit one at least once a
week (except during the summer
season). Men and women have
separate areas, which they
enjoy while nude. There are
several pools at a bathhouse
with different temperatures or
different mineral contents. Before entering the pool, you need to take a shower.
Body scrubbing is also part of Korean baths. Using a special towel, people
scrub their bodies to remove dirt and dead skin. Most bathhouses also offer a
body scrubbing service for 15,000- 20,000. The body scrub usually lasts an
hour body and includes a massage.
Jjimjilbangs, or saunas, are similar to the bathhouses. They are a popular way
to relax for Koreans. There are many public bathhouses that also offer saunas.
Unlike the baths, people wear pajama-like outfits and men and women use the
same saunas. There are many saunas that differ according to temperature,
minerals, or the material of the room’s walls.

Soju/
In Korean, the only thing more beloved than Soju
is Kimchi. Soju, a traditional alcohol unique to
Korea, is the most popular drink in the country.
The average amount of alcohol is about 21%, and
each province has its own taste or brand of Soju.
It goes especially well with Samgyepsal (barbequed pork), but Koreans are not
afraid to drink it with any other dish.

Seol (Lunar New Year’s, a 3-day holiday
based on the lunar calendar, so the dates
change annually):Seol is one of the two
most important traditional holidays in
Korea. Many shops are closed and highways are packed
with cars as people visit their hometowns to see their
family. During Seol, people eat ‘Tteokguk’ (rice cake soup)
and do ‘Saebae’ (deep, traditional bows to elders). This is
one of the happiest days for children as they receive
‘Saebaedon’ (money given after Saebae) from adults.

Independence Movement Day
This day commemorates the Declaration
of Independence proclaimed on March 1,
1919, when Korea was under Japanese

Children’s Day:This is one of the
happiest days for children. Parents bring
children to amusement parks or zoos and
buy gifts for them.
- Koreans love the color white and don’t use red ink when writing a person’s
name. Red is only used for people who have passed away.
- Patting children on the back or on the head is very common and expresses
warm feelings.
- The Korean language uses honorifics. There is an obvious distinction between
formal and causal expressions. Formal expressions are used towards elders or
unfamiliar people; causal expressions are used between friends. Formal
expressions usually end with “Yo”.
- Blowing one’s nose in front of others is not considered good manners in
Korea.
- Throughout its long history, Korea has respected the elderly. It’s very common
in Korea to see younger people give their seats to
older people on the bus. When you give
or receive something to or from
someone older, you should use
two hands.
- While talking with someone
older, it is considered very
rude to look straight at
them.
