He studied at the Academy there under the tutelage of Pollastrini and Tricca and he was subsequently made a professor and was awarded a scholarship. Andreotti was highly regarded in Florence during his lifetime and the king of Italy commissioned him to produce the large painting ‘Savonarola’ which was highly regarded and enhanced his reputation. He also executed many frescoes and decorative paintings in Florence. The artist was very popular abroad and between 1879 and 1883 he exhibited his work at the Royal Academy in London. He perfected the art of painting decorative genre paintings which often carried a romantic theme or told a story and he was renowned for painting 17th and 18th century Italian costumes and interiors. The Key to Her Heart Signed Oil on Canvas 26 x 19 ins / 66 x 48.2 cms 2 Harold Clayton 1896 - 1979 Harold Clayton was born in London in 1896. He came from an artistic family and was sent to art school in Hackney at an early age. After graduating with distinction, he moved to Harrow Art School and completed the course, once again, with distinction. From here he was sent to Hornsey College of Art where he studied graphic design and commercial art graduating, as ever, with distinction (even though he was not particularly enamoured of this art form). Finally, he went to St. Martins School of Art where he studied under the celebrated Art Master Norman Jones. Meticulous attention to detail and his love of the garden were the two predominant forces which shaped his painting. Although he was a master of many media it is primarily for still life flower paintings that he became famous. This is ironic as he completed relatively few flower paintings in his life. He painted approximately one painting per month, which accounts for both the scarcity of his still life paintings and their quality. The English Garden Signed Oil on Canvas 22 x 26 ins / 56 x 66 cms 3 Heywood Hardy 1842 - 1933 Heywood Hardy was a painter and etcher of animals, portraits, genre and sporting subjects. He was born in Chichester, on 25th November, 1842, son of the artist James Hardy, Sr. (1801-1879) and younger brother of James Hardy, Jr. (1832-1889). After a short time with the 7th Somerset Volunteers, Hardy borrowed some money from his brother and travelled to Paris. In 1864 he entered the Beaux Arts to study under the battle artist, Pielse. He returned to England in 1868 and found his work was in great demand. He was often invited to country estates to paint portraits, sporting pictures and animal studies. Hardy continued to enjoy these commissions but he also began to paint more genre subjects. From about 1870 his career flourished and he was elected a member of a number of societies including The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited 46 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1919 whilst also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institute. Their grandfather was Charles Hunt (1803-1877) who was well-known for his humorous genre subjects which he exhibited from 1846 at the Royal Academy and their father was the artist Charles Hunt Jr. (1829-1900). With this background of artistic achievement it was natural for Edgar and Walter (1861-1941) to become painters. Edgar had no formal art training but was schooled by his father. He specialised in painting exquisitely detailed works of farmyard scenes and animals, executed meticulously in a realistic style which never changed throughout his career. Hunt was devoted to animals from a very early age. He had originally intended to be a farmer and had worked on a farm near Lewes in Sussex for a short period. He continued the tradition of English animal painting which had begun with Landseer. Landseer was the first English artist to portray animals for their own sake, imbuing them with human characteristics and emotion. Edgar Hunt was best known for his paintings of chickens but he also painted other birds such as ducks which were very popular during the period. Donkeys, goats and ponies were also in demand and at which he excelled. He was not a public man and rarely exhibited his work. However, he did show eleven animal scenes at the Royal Society of Artists in Birmingham and ‘Feathered Friends’ was exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. He was a great friend of the artist J.F. Herring Jr. (1815-1907) by whom he was influenced artistically. Highly successful during his life-time, Edgar Hunt remains ever popular to this day. All Ears Signed and Dated Oil on Canvas 22 x 30 ins / 55.8 x 76.2 cms 6 Frederick William Hulme 1816 - 1884 F.W. Hulme was born on 22nd October, 1816 in Swinton, Yorkshire. He was initially taught by his mother, a porcelain painter, and by 1841 he had exhibited his first landscapes at the Birmingham Academy. During the first three decades of the 19th century, England was changing from a rural society to an urban one and country life was viewed nostalgically as purer, healthier and more natural than life in the smoky new cities. The Victorian newly rich bought country estates and the large demand for landscape paintings produced a huge number of landscape artists. Hulme moved to London in 1844 where he became an illustrator and engraver. However, he soon tired of this and began painting landscapes again. By 1852 the artist was living in Hereford Square and he began exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy and the British Institute. His paintings were mostly idyllic Welsh or Surrey views with animals, particularly sheep, with occasional rustic figures. His style is clear and fresh and his tranquil pastoral scenes fulfilled the Victorian ideal. By 1869 Hulme was living at 8 St. Alban’s Road in Kensington from where he continued to exhibit at the Academy until 1884. The painting ‘To Pastures New’ was painted in 1871 at the height of Hulme’s career. It is a very fine and typical example of the artist’s work; the painting is very detailed and PreRaphaelite in feel and the palette is fresh. Hulme lived in London until the end of his life. He died on 14th November, 1884. To Pastures New Signed and dated 1871 Oil on Canvas 20 x 30 ins / 50.8 x 76.2 cms 7 Bessie Bamber Fl. 1895 - 1925 Bessie Bamber lived and worked in Liverpool and she specialised in painting cats and kittens. She normally signed her paintings with a monogram, and often painted on ivorine or glass. Playing Hard to Get Signed with Monogram and Dated 1923 Oil on Panel 11 3/4 x 36 ins / 30 x 91.5 cms Bamber’s style is detailed and her pictures are always carefully wrought. She was a clever creator of composition. Her kittens are never mere portraits, but are usually illustrated playing or surrounded by objects such as cotton reels or baskets, etc. The artist used a variety of attractive colours in her pieces, usually warm reds and browns and the paintings often tell a story. Bessie Bamber painted during the Edwardian era. Her pictures have always attracted a wide following and are sought after by cat lovers and art collectors alike. 8 Henry H. Parker 1858 - 1930 Born in 1858, Henry Parker lived in London and studied at the St. Martins School of Art. He started his working life as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News but by the age of 23 he had become known as a landscape painter. From 1923 Parker exhibited many of his paintings in the USA, especially in Chicago where his work was in great demand. His paintings were also popular in Canada and were hung in many leading clubs there and in the USA. Parker mainly painted in the South East of England, particularly in Surrey, Sussex, and along the Thames where he frequently stayed at Goring and Streatley. He also painted in the Worcestershire area, Wales and Scotland. His Scottish works were usually signed ‘H. D. Hillier’ whereas he signed his English scenes ‘Henry H. Parker’. His works are to be found in museums in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. The Evening Hour Signed and inscribed verso Oil on Canvas 24 x 36 ins / 61 x 91.5 cms 9 Eugène Galien-Laloue 1854 -1941 Eugène Galien-Laloue was born in Paris in December, 1854. He was a pupil of Charles Laloue and was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français from 1877. He painted the countryside around Normandy and Seine-et-Marne and he is known to have illustrated some military subjects in 1914. However, Galien-Laloue is most highly regarded for his exquisite paintings of Paris in which he conveys the essence of the Belle Epoque. His most usual medium for these works was gouache, a mixture of opaque watercolour and glue, which he used to maximum effect. The artist captures the atmosphere of the bustling and fashionable boulevards of the great city and his portrayal of the horse-drawn carriages, trolley cars and the first omnibuses are of historical as well as artistic interest. Galien-Laloue was a forerunner in popularising the painting of street scenes and later artists such as Edouard Cortès and Antoine Blanchard were inspired and influenced by him. He died on 18th April, 1941. Boulevard St. Martin, Paris Signed Gouache Sight size 7 1/4 x 10 1/4 ins / 18.4 x 26 cms 10 Peder Mork Mønsted 1859 - 1941 Peder Mork Mønsted was born on 10th December 1859 near to Grenaa in Denmark. He began his artistic training in Aarhus before travelling to Copenhagen to study at the Academy of Copenhagen from 1875 to 1879. He was much influenced by his teacher Andries Fritz who was the court painter to Prince Ferdinand of Aarhus and he also studied figure painting under Julius Exner and Niels Simonsen. Mønsted's style developed further in the studio of Peder Severin Kroyer and through a brief period with William Adolphe Bouguereau. Although Mønsted was established in Copenhagen, he travelled throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. His work was frequently exhibited in Charlottenborg and at the Paris and Munich Salons. He is widely recognised for his luminous landscapes often featuring water, which demonstrate an almost photographic quality and supreme technical skill. A New Spring Day Signed Oil on Canvas 31 1/2 x 21 ins / 80 x 53.3 cms 11 Eugenio Eduardo Zampighi 1859 - 1944 Eugenio Zampighi was born in Modena, Italy on 17th October 1859. He showed a keen interest in art when he was very young and at the age of thirteen he attended the Academy of Design. Zampighi completed the course winning six first class medals in the examinations. At the age of twenty, Zampighi won a scholarship and spent three years in Rome. He was very successful in the yearly examinations and he was invited to become an Honourable Member of the Modena Academy. He spent the last year of his scholarship in Florence and he decided to settle there in 1884. It was here that Zampighi began to paint his well-known genre subjects. These were readily sold and he received many commissions from local dealers and from abroad. After executing a large painting that was exhibited in the hall of the Modena Academy the degree of Professor was conferred upon him by the Council of the Academy. Zampighi then devoted himself to figure painting, depicting scenes of the domestic life of his countrymen. These paintings are very pleasing compositions with lively colouring and are his best known works. Zampighi died in Maranello in 1944. The museum of Modern Art in Modena has examples of his works. Advice from Grandpa Signed Oil on Canvas 23 1/2 x 18 ins / 59.7 x 45.7 cms 12 Edouard Léon Cortès 1882 - 1969 Cortès was born on 6th August 1882 into a family of artists and artisans. His family originated from Seville but came to France in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle and never returned to Spain. They settled in Lagny which is about 20 miles east of Paris as there had been an artistic community there for many years. Cortès lived there for most of his life, leaving school at the age of 13 to enter his father’s studio where he learnt to paint. In 1899 Cortès was admitted to the Salon and his work was praised by the international press. Although Cortès painted some landscapes and other genres his main interest was that of portraying the Paris of the Belle Epoque. This period lasted between 1880 and 1914 and saw the glorious rise of art, music, theatre, literature and industry. The Parisians were able to enjoy the fruits of the rebuilding of the city undertaken by Napoleon III and Haussmann. In 1888 the ‘Figaro Illustré’ devoted a special issue to this ‘spectacle de la rue’ calling the boulevards the ‘true theatre’ of Paris. Cortès painted the boulevards and the famous monuments of Paris and delighted in capturing them with many different lighting effects, weathers and viewpoints. Marché aux Fleurs, Place de la Madeleine, Paris Signed Oil on Canvas 18 1/8 x 21 5/8 ins / 46 x 55 cms 13 Marcel Dyf 1899 - 1985 Marcel Dyf was born in Paris on the 7th October, 1899. As a youth he was influenced by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements that he observed in Paris and Normandy, where he spent his holidays. He started a career in engineering but it was short lived and he was still in his early twenties when he decided to become an artist. He moved to Arles in Provence where he bought a studio and began zealously painting the inspirational landscapes that were new to him. Dyf was entirely self-taught as an artist. He remained in Arles for thirteen years before returning to Paris in 1935. After the war Dyf held exhibitions of his work in some of the major cities in France. In 1950 he acquired a studio in Cannes where he met his wife Claudine in 1954. A member of l'Ecole Français, Dyf's fame rapidly spread outside his native France and a number of successful exhibitions of his work have been held in the United States of America and Great Britain. He died on 16th September, 1985. Les Belles Fleurs Signed Oil on Canvas 28 3/4 x 23 5/8 ins / 73 x 60 cms 14 Paul Emile Lecomte 1877 - 1950 Paul Emile Lecomte was born in Paris in 1877. He began his training by studying with his father, the artist Paul Lecomte (1842-1920) and he then became a pupil of the artist Cormon. Although most of his subjects were French landscapes and coastal scenes, predominantly of Brittany, he also worked in Cornwall, and painted still life. He became a Member of the Salon des Artistes Français in 1902 and from there he received a Gold Medal. He was also an official artist for the Maritime Ministry and he exhibited his work extensively in Paris. L’Ile d’Oleron, Brittany Signed Oil on Panel 9 1/2 x 13 ins / 24 x 33 cms 15 Antoine Blanchard 1910 - 1988 Antoine Blanchard was born in a village near Blois on the banks of the River Loire in 1910. His father had an important joinery business and was well known in the area. Perhaps it was through watching his father carving wood and producing fine craftsmanship that the artistic spirit was kindled in the young Blanchard. Soon his parents were actively encouraging Antoine by sending him to Blois for drawing lessons. They realised that this would only give him the rudiments and to achieve a successful artistic career he would need expert guidance. For this reason he was sent to Rennes to attend classes at the School of Beaux Arts. He studied for three years and developed a remarkable drawing skill, which was to prove invaluable in later life. Sadly, Antoine Blanchard's artistic hopes were put aside when he had to take over the family joinery business left to him by his father. He painted occasionally for pleasure, but had to refuse many important commissions from art dealers as business pressures were so great. He eventually retired from business and moved to Paris, where he lived until his death. Antoine Blanchard took no interest in the aspects of modern life and always depicted the elegance of life in Paris in the early 1900s. Paris - Boulevard des Capucines Signed and Inscribed verso Oil on Canvas 18 x 21 5/8 ins / 45.7 x 55 cms 16 Pierre de Clausade 1910 - 1975 Pierre de Clausade was born in Paris on the 15th April, 1910. Although he did not begin to paint for exhibition until he was 31, the desire to express himself through painting had occurred to him many years before. Clausade felt that, in addition to a thorough knowledge of his craft, he must experiment - following the example of his contemporaries Braque, Matisse and Picasso. After many years of trial and error he felt sufficiently confident to hold his first exhibition in Paris in 1943. The exhibition was a phenomenal success and as a result further shows were held during the following years in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York and Jordan. Pierre de Clausade exhibited regularly at the Société des Beaux Arts and became a member of the Salon d’Hiver. Then his fame spread abroad and his paintings entered many distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and Minneapolis Museums of Fine Art. Despite this success Clausade continued to develop his technique, striving for perfection and the satisfaction of his analytical nature. Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the Paris Salon in January 1953.
