In 1846 he was granted permission to accompany a Danish frigate (which was to cross the Mediterranean) and to sketch the landfalls. It is doubtless due to Sorensen's first hand experience aboard seafaring vessels that he achieved such excellence in his work. Indeed Sorensen is widely considered as one of the finest Danish marine artists and his depictions of boats, harbours and seascapes are portrayed with such life-like precision that one can identify his special relationship and understanding of life on the sea. There is a collection of Sorensen's work at the Royal Naval Museum, Copenhagen. His marine painting is also represented in public collections in Oslo and Stockholm. He died in Copenhagen on the 24th January, 1879. Landing the Catch, Holland Signed and Dated 1853 Oil on Canvas 26 1/2 x 40 3/4 ins / 67.3 x 103.5 cms 2 Eugenio Eduardo Zampighi Fl. 1859 - 1944 Eugenio Zampighi was born in Modena, Italy on 17th October 1859. He showed a keen interest in art when he was very young and at the age of thirteen he attended the Academy of Design. Zampighi completed the course winning six first class medals in the examinations. At the age of twenty, Zampighi won a scholarship and spent three years in Rome. He was very successful in the yearly examinations and he was invited to become an Honourable Member of the Modena Academy. He spent the last year of his scholarship in Florence and he decided to settle there in 1884. It was here that Zampighi began to paint his well-known genre subjects. These were readily sold and he received many commissions from local dealers and from abroad. After executing a large painting that was exhibited in the hall of the Modena Academy the degree of Professor was conferred upon him by the Council of the Academy. Zampighi then devoted himself to figure painting, depicting scenes of the domestic life of his countrymen. These paintings are very pleasing compositions with lively colouring and are his best known works. Zampighi died in Maranello in 1944. The museum of Modern Art in Modena has examples of his works. The Most Enthralling Story Signed Oil on Canvas 27 x 36 ins / 68.6 x 91.4 cms 3 David Bates 1840 - 1921 David Bates was born in Cambridgeshire. He spent most of his early life in Worcestershire, where he became apprenticed at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works. A painter in both oils and watercolours, Bates visited the Trading Company in North Africa, before returning to paint landscapes of Wales and Scotland. Bates's paintings show the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923). His works achieved much recognition - Lord Leighton (the then President of the Royal Academy) purchased a snow scene of Hollymount Woods. His paintings, which are usually inscribed with a title on the reverse, are much sought after by collectors today. He exhibited at the Royal Academy (1863-1893), the Royal Society of British Artists, the Grafton Gallery and the New Watercolour Society. Liverpool Museum hold an example of his work. Blackberry Gatherers The Old Road between Bettws and Capel Curig Signed and Dated 1880 ; Inscribed on Reverse Oil on Canvas 24 x 36 ins / 61 x 91.4 cms 4 Albert Durer Lucas 1828 - 1918 Albert Durer Lucas, the son of sculptor Richard Cockle Lucas, exhibited mainly in London between 1859-78 with the Royal Institute and the Society of British Artists. He painted small, detailed studies of flowers and foliage, sometimes with butterflies and other insects. In 1910 he caused a sensation by revealing that his father was the real author of a bust of Flora which had recently been bought by the Berlin Museum as a Leonardo. Roses and Summer Flowers Signed and Dated 1895 Oil on Canvas 19 x 13 ins / 48.2 x 33 cms 5 Albert Durer Lucas 1828 - 1918 Harebells and Centaury Signed and Dated 1874 A Pair of Oils on Canvas 10 x 8 ins / 25.4 x 20.3 cms Please see following page for the illustration of the pair to this painting 5 Albert Durer Lucas 1828 - 1918 Erica Tetralix with a Butterfly Signed and Dated 1875 A Pair of Oils on Canvas 10 x 8 ins / 25.4 x 20.3 cms Please see preceding page for the illustration of the pair to this painting 6 James Hardy, Jr 1832 – 1889 James Hardy, Jr. came from a very artistic family. His father was the landscape artist James Hardy, Sr. (1801-1879) and his younger brother was Heywood Hardy (1842-1933), a wellknown sporting artist. Daniel Frederick Hardy was his cousin and he was a leading member of the Cranbrook colony of artists. The Industrial Revolution and consequent expansion of the middle class in England gave rise to a wealth of landscape and animal artists whose paintings reminded people of their more rural past. Landseer was the first artist who painted animals with a human expressiveness and many other artists followed suit. Queen Victoria, who had a great love of dogs, was one of Landseer’s patrons and thus a fashion for this genre was created. James Hardy, Jr. lived in Bristol all his life and he specialised in painting sporting scenes depicting dogs and game, often set in Highland scenery. He painted both in oil and watercolour and exhibited regularly, at the Watercolour Society of which he became a member in 1877. Examples of his work are held by the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and Bristol and Cardiff museums. The Gillie Boy Signed and Dated 1874 Oil on Panel 11 3/4 x 10 ins / 29.3 x 25.4 cms 7 Sidney Richard Percy 1821 – 1886 S.R. Percy was born in London into a famous dynasty of artists known as the Williams family. He was the 5th son of Edward Williams the well-known landscape artist under whom he studied. Percy was one of the most prolific and successful landscape painters of the Williams family. His works were very popular and by 1863 he was living with his wife and children in a fine Regency home, Hill House, at Great Missenden. Although he travelled widely, visiting Venice, the Alps and Paris, Percy was inspired the most by the landscape of Wales and Scotland. He was fascinated by photography and had a dark-room at Hill House and many of the figures in the foreground of his pictures were based on his own photographs. His paintings are sometimes of monumental views and he often painted the dramatic atmospheric effects of an impending storm. Percy had many important patrons including the Prince Consort who purchased a painting from him on 26th August, 1854 for the sum of £40. The work was of Llyn Dulyn in Wales and Prince Albert gave it to Queen Victoria on the occasion of his birthday at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Percy exhibited many works at the Royal Academy between 1842 and 1886. He also exhibited at the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists amongst other places. Keswick Signed Oil on Canvas 9 x 14 ins / 22.8 x 35.6 cms 8 Johannes Franciscus Spohler 1853 - 1894 J.F. Spohler was born in 1853, probably in Leiden. His father was the well-known landscape artist Jan Jacob Spohler and his brother J.J.C. Spohler was also a painter. J.F. Spohler was born at the height of the Romantic movement in Holland and he was very much an exponent of this genre. He followed in the footsteps of the most accomplished painter of town views, Cornelis Springer (1817-1891). Spohler often chose to paint on small mahogany panels and his fine draughtsmanship is always apparent in his work. He paints with a delicate palette concentrating on topographical accuracy and rendering the effects of light to stunning effect. His pictures have a jewel-like quality and are highly sought after. Summer Street Scene, Holland Signed A Pair of Oils on Panel 8 1/8 x 6 1/8 ins / 20.6 x 15.5 cms Please see following page for the illustration of the pair to this painting 8 Johannes Franciscus Spohler 1853 - 1894 Summer Street Scene, Holland Signed A Pair of Oils on Panel 8 1/8 x 6 1/8 ins / 20.6 x 15.5 cms Please see preceding page for the illustration of the pair to this painting 9 Edmund Blair Leighton 1853 – 1922 Edmund Blair Leighton was born in London on 21st September, 1853. His father was the portrait artist Charles Blair Leighton who exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1843 and 1854. His portrait of Joseph Hume now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery. Edmund began painting when he was 21 and he trained at the Royal Academy School. He first exhibited there in 1878 when he is recorded as living at 175 Cornwall Road, Notting Hill. He was a skilled draughtsman and his pleasing genre paintings were either of historical subjects or subjects of a rather more romantic nature. He often depicted elegant ladies in landscapes or interiors and Christopher Wood wrote that the works ‘have a similar charm to those of Tissot’. Certainly the public greatly admired his work and delighted in his romantic depiction of a bygone age. Leighton continued to exhibit at the Royal Academy until 1904. His works were often signed E.B.L. The artist died in London on 1st September, 1922 and Bristol City Museum and Leeds City Art Gallery have examples of his work in their collections. The Gallant Suitor Signed with Initials and Dated 1890 Oil on Panel 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 ins / 24.8 x 32.4 cms 10 James Edwin Meadows 1828 – 1888 A London landscape painter, James Edwin Meadows was the son of well-known artist, James Meadows, Sr. and came from a family with a strong artistic tradition. Despite being based in London, James Edwin Meadows travelled extensively throughout Great Britain seeking inspiration for his landscapes, particularly concentrating on the Southern coastline. He frequently painted views in Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. James Edwin Meadows exhibited at the major London Galleries including the Royal Academy (1854-72), the British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artists. A Summer’s Day Signed and Dated 1880 Oil on Canvas 30 x 48 ins / 76.2 x 122 cms 11 William Weekes Fl. 1864 – 1904 William Weekes is best known for his genre and animal paintings. He was born into an artistic family - his father was the sculptor Henry Weekes RA and his elder brother the genre painter, Henry Weekes, Jr. William Weekes spent his working life in London and he resided at 21 Oppingdon Road, Primrose Hill. Amongst his favourite subjects were humorous portrayals of animals. Indeed Weekes delighted in personifying them and placing them in situations particular to humans, as seen in the paintings: 'You are sitting in my Nest', 'Prattlers and Cracklers', 'The Patient and the Quacks' and 'A Snap for the Lot'. However, Weekes' work shows a sensitive understanding of his subject matter and part of his success in creating such a peaceful country atmosphere lies in his affection for it. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and other major London venues from 1865 to 1904. On Guard Signed Oil on Panel 8 x 11 1/2 ins / 20.3 x 29.2 cms 12 Pompeo Massani 1850 - 1920 Born in December, 1850 in Florence, Massani studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence under the painter Gardigiani. He first exhibited his work in 1879 and during his life he continued to work throughout Italy, particularly in Florence, Rovigo and Genoa. He was made a Knight of the Crown of Italy for his artistic endeavours Massani is best known for his depiction of genre subjects. Some of these were of ecclesiastical subjects or peasant life, but his favourite subject was that of 18th century Italian interiors with elegant figures. Like other contemporaries such as Reggianini, Landini, Ricci and Andreotti, his works often had a romantic theme. Taste, elegance and luxury are keynotes in the re-interpretation of a bygone age, and many artists in Florence at this time perfected this popular genre. The Plot Thickens Signed and Inscribed ‘Firenze’ Oil on Canvas 14 x 17 3/4 ins / 35.5 x 45.1 cms 13 David James Fl. 1881 – 1900 David James was a prolific marine painter, yet surprisingly little is recorded about the artist’s life. He first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1886 from an address in Dalston, Cumberland, and from 1892-97 from an address in Maida Vale, London. At his best he was a very skilful painter of the sea from the shore. Like Henry Moore, James was more interested in pure studies of the sea rather than topographical coastal views. He was especially good at painting waves and his favourite locations to paint were the coastline of Cornwall and around the Isles of Scilly. The National Maritime Museum has a fine, large example of breakers. Titles of works exhibited at the R.A. include 'A North Cornish Breaker' and 'An Atlantic Roller'. The Inrushing Tide Signed and Dated 1895 ; Inscribed on Reverse Oil on Canvas 25 x 50 ins / 63.5 x 127 cms 14 Heywood Hardy 1842 – 1933 Heywood Hardy was a painter and etcher of animals, portraits, genre and sporting subjects. He was born in Chichester, on 25th November, 1842, son of the artist James Hardy, Sr. (18011879) and younger brother of James Hardy, Jr. (1832-1889). After a short time with the 7th Somerset Volunteers, Hardy borrowed some money from his brother and travelled to Paris. In 1864 he entered the Beaux Arts to study under the battle artist, Pielse. He returned to England in 1868 and found his work was in great demand. He was often invited to country estates to paint portraits, sporting pictures and animal studies. Hardy continued to enjoy commissions for portraits, animal studies and hunting scenes, but he decided to concentrate on painting genre subjects. From about 1870 his career flourished and he was elected a member of a number of societies including The Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, The Royal Institute of Oil Painters and The Royal Society of Portrait Painters. He exhibited 46 paintings at the Royal Academy between 1864 and 1919 whilst also exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists and the British Institute. A Fine Start Signed Oil on Canvas 20 1/8 x 31 1/8 ins / 51.1 x 79 cms 15 Henry Deacon Hillier (aka Henry H. Parker) 1858 - 1930 Born in 1858, Henry Hillier lived in London and studied at the St. Martin’s School of Art. He started his working life as an illustrator for the Illustrated London News but by the age of 23 he had become known as a landscape painter. From 1923 Hillier exhibited many of his paintings in the USA, especially in Chicago when his work was in great demand. His paintings were also popular in Canada and were hung in many leading clubs there and in the USA. Hillier painted mainly in the South East of England, particularly in Surrey, Sussex and along the Thames where he frequently stayed at Goring and Streatley. He also painted in the Worcestershire area, Wales and Scotland. His Scottish works were usually signed ‘H.D. Hillier’ and are far fewer in number than his English scenes which he signed ‘Henry H. Parker’. Consequently the Scottish views are very sought after and quite rare. His works are to be found in museums in Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Loch Maree, Ross-shire, Scotland Signed ; Inscribed with Title on Reverse Oil on Canvas 20 x 30 ins / 50.7 x 76.2 cms 16 Harold Clayton 1896 – 1979 Harold Clayton was born in London in 1896. He came from an artistic family and was sent to art school in Hackney at an early age. After graduating with distinction, he moved to Harrow Art School and completed the course, once again, with distinction. From here he was sent to Hornsey College of Art where he studied graphic design and commercial art graduating, as ever, with distinction (even though he was not particularly enamoured of this art form). Finally, he went to St. Martins School of Art where he studied under the celebrated Art Master Norman Jones. Meticulous attention to detail and his love of the garden were the two predominant forces which shaped his painting. Although he was a master of many media it is primarily for still life flower paintings that he became famous. This is ironic as he completed relatively few flower paintings in his life. He painted approximately one painting per month, which accounts for both the scarcity of his still life paintings and their quality. Summer Flowers Signed Oil on Canvas 24 x 20 ins / 61 x 50.8 cms 17 Anders Andersen-Lundby 1841 – 1923 Andersen-Lundby was born on 16th December, 1841 in Lundby, a town near Aalborg in Denmark. In 1861 the artist went to Copenhagen to pursue his artistic career. He stayed there for several years living within the artistic community. Andersen-Lundby moved to Munich in 1876 where he exhibited his works virtually every year. For the most part the artist painted winter landscapes often depicting late afternoon sunshine or dusk. His works are very atmospheric and his technique became very impressionistic towards the latter part of his life. Museums in Copenhagen, Munich and Trieste hold examples of his work. As Evening Falls Signed and Dated 1882 Oil on Canvas 28 x 37 1/2 ins / 71.1 x 95.2 cms 18 Fritz Wagner 1896 – 1939 Wagner was born in Munich in 1896. He followed in the footsteps of the French artists Meissonier and Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel who both painted subjects with a military theme. The tender gaze adopted by many 19th century painters towards subjects of children was also extended towards paintings of the older generation, most notably by artists from Germany and Austria. Whilst artists such as Lesrel concentrated on scenes of grandeur at court, with elegantly dressed noblemen playing chess or attending musical recitals, other painters such as Wagner concentrated on more nostalgic compositions with their characterful portrayals of card playing or story telling, inevitably accompanied by ale and a pipe. Fritz Wagner developed his own style and he always painted his subjects in an informal and relaxed atmosphere. His palette was soft but he was a skilled draughtsman and his figures are well painted and natural. A Welcome Discovery Signed Oil on Canvas 19 3/4 x 23 3/4 ins / 50.2 x 60.3 cms 19 Fritz Wagner 1896 – 1939 A Toast to Good Friends Signed and Inscribed ‘Mch’ (Munchen) Oil on Canvas 31 5/8 x 39 1/2 ins / 80.3 x 100.3 cms 20 Robert Gallon 1845 - 1925 Robert Gallon was a landscape painter who lived in London. He travelled extensively throughout the British Isles to paint his subjects, which included recognised views of England, Scotland and Wales. Gallon's paintings can vary greatly in style, ranging from broad, loose brush strokes to extremely delicate textures. Gallon painted in a realistic style similar to that of Benjamin Williams Leader and Vicat Cole. Gallon actively exhibited during the years 1868 - 1903 at the principal London Galleries, particularly the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Gathering Poppies Signed Oil on Canvas 20 x 30 ins / 50.7 x 76.2 cms 21 Marie Yvonne ‘Yo’ Laur 1879 - 1943 Marie Yvonne Laur was born in Paris on the 21st July, 1879. She studied in Paris and became a very competent genre painter, eventually specialising in delightful portrayals of cats. She signed her work 'Yo Laur', the name by which her contemporaries affectionately called her. During the later part of the 19th century, as the middle classes expanded, so did the number of cats and dogs kept as domestic pets. This gave rise to a large demand for cat paintings which would have been inconceivable in the 18th century. Cats as a subject were seen as eminently suitable for the female brush and artists such as Henrietta Ronner and Maud Earl were all highly successful. Laur exhibited her work at the Salon des Artistes Français and she became a member there in 1908 having received an honourable mention for her work previously. Her draughtsmanship was excellent and the playful animation of her subjects, together with her use of rich colouring makes her work immediately appealing. The museums of Anvers, Bagnols, Digne and Gray hold examples of her work. A Special Treat Signed Oil on Panel 8 1/2 x 16 1/8 ins / 21.6 x 41 cms 22 Antoine Bouvard, Sr 1870 – 1955 Antoine Bouvard was born at St. Jean-de-Bournay in L' Isere in 1870. He trained as an architect and studied art and architecture under Constant-Dufeus at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became the Director of Architectural Services for the Seine, and was responsible for the construction of the Bourse du Travail and the Boulevard Morland in Paris. Bouvard was a great artist and his favourite subjects were the architecture and canals of Venice. His work shows the influence of Félix Ziem in his choice of warm colours and the fluidity of movement in his brush strokes. His paintings reflect the outstanding beauty of the city and he captures the unique lighting effects that are found there. The artist is known to have painted under his own name and frequently under the pseudonym Marc Aldine. Tranquil Waters, Venice Signed Oil on Canvas 23 3/4 x 32 ins / 60.3 x 81.3 cms 23 Albert Gabriel Rigolot 1862 - 1932 Albert Gabriel Rigolot was born in Paris on the 28th November, 1862. He studied and revered the work of the Old Masters and they greatly influenced his own artistic development. Rigolot's technique was measured and precise and he paid great attention to detail. His naturalistic style and treatment of light is reminiscent of the Barbizon School - this is best illustrated in his marvellous portrayals of sunlit ponds and rivers. Rigolot travelled to Algeria, as was fashionable amongst artists in the late 19th century. He painted many Oriental scenes and was consequently elected a member of the French Society of Orientalists. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1888, and from 1886 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. In 1889 he was recommended for the Honours List - he received a Médaille de Troisième Classe in 1891, a Médaille Deuxième Classe in 1892, a Médaille d'Argent in 1900 and the Legion of Honour in 1901. This recognition from the state illustrates Rigolot’s importance as a cultural figure at the time. His work epitomises French taste and ideals of the period. He had a studio on Rue Singer in Paris, in the XVI arrondissement. He died in Paris on the 25th April, 1932. Paysage d’Automne Signed Oil on Canvas 25 5/8 x 39 3/8 ins / 65.1 x 100 cms 24 Henry John Yeend King, RBA 1855 - 1924 Henry John Yeend King was a landscape and rustic genre painter. He worked for three years in a glassworks, and he studied under William Bromley and also with Bonnat and Cormon in Paris. He exhibited between 1874-1924 at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society and the Grosvenor Gallery. He was elected to the Royal Society of British Artists in 1879, Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours in 1886 and later became the Vice-President. Yeend King was also a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters. In 1898 his picture of "Milking Time" was bought by the Tate Gallery. Yeend King was a typical late Victorian painter of rustic genre often portraying garden scenes with pretty girls, but his robust plein air technique and bold colours reflect his Paris training. Works by him are in the Tate Gallery, the Walker Art Gallery, Reading, Rochdale and Sheffield Galleries. He was married to the sister of Robert Gallon. The English Rose Signed Oil on Canvas 36 7/8 x 28 ins / 93.7 x 71.1 cms 25 Edouard Léon Cortès 1882 – 1969 Cortès was born on 6th August, 1882 into a family of artists and artisans. His family originated from Seville but came to France in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle and never returned to Spain. They settled in Lagny which is about 20 miles east of Paris as there had been an artistic community there for many years. Cortès lived there for most of his life, leaving school at the age of 13 to enter his father’s studio where he learnt to paint. In 1899 Cortès was admitted to the Salon and his work was praised by the international press. Although Cortès painted some landscapes and other genres his main interest was that of portraying the Paris of the Belle Epoque. This period lasted between 1880 and 1914 and saw the glorious rise of art, music, theatre, literature and industry. The Parisians were able to enjoy the fruits of the rebuilding of the city undertaken by Napoleon III and Haussmann. In 1888 the ‘Figaro Illustré’ devoted a special issue to this ‘spectacle de la rue’ calling the boulevards the ‘true theatre’ of Paris. Cortès painted the boulevards and the famous monuments of Paris and delighted in capturing them with many different lighting effects, weathers and viewpoints. Le Soir, La Madeleine Signed Oil on Canvas 14 7/8 x 21 5/8 ins / 37.8 x 55 cms 26 Cecil Kennedy 1905 – 1997 Cecil Kennedy was born in Leyton on 4th February, 1905. Kennedy studied art in London and began exhibiting his work from an early age. Before he was 24 he had shown at the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Hibernian Academy and he then went on to exhibit regularly at the Royal Academy and in the provinces. During the early 1930s Cecil Kennedy married Winifred Aves who was very skilled at creating the beautiful flower arrangements that Kennedy painted. Over the years the couple collected many mid-eighteenth century Waterford vases which continually featured in his work. During WW2 Kennedy spent time in Antwerp and it was here that he familiarized himself with the Dutch and Flemish Old Master flower paintings which greatly influenced his painting style and technique. From the 1950s until the 1970s Kennedy exhibited regularly at The Fine Art Society. The artist had many important patrons during his life including the Duke of Windsor, the Astors and Queen Mary who noticed a ladybird that Kennedy had painted on the stem of a flower and Kennedy always incorporated a ladybird into his paintings thereafter. Lord Thomson was also a great admirer of Kennedy's work. Cecil Kennedy is widely regarded as the finest British painter of flowers of the 20th century. A Vase of Roses Signed Oil on Canvas 20 x 16 ins / 50.8 x 40.7 cms Provenance : The Fine Art Society, London 1956 27 Cecil Kennedy 1905 – 1997 Summer Flowers in a Venetian Vase Signed (Painted in 1976) Oil on Canvas 24 x 20 ins / 61 x 50.8 cms 28 Bernard Pothast 1882 – 1966 Bernard Pothast was born on 30th November, 1882 in Hal, Belgium. He studied painting at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam between 1904 and 1907 and there he was particularly influenced by the artist A. Allebe, who was a professor at the school. Pothast was very much a follower of the Hague School who were the Dutch equivalent of the French Impressionists. He specialised in painting interior scenes with children, often depicting toys and other objects which are of both an historical and artistic interest. It has been suggested that his models were his wife and children and it is tempting to accept this as true when a likeness of models can be detected throughout his works. The artist's use of light was very special. His figures are often bathed in a warm glowing light which usually emanates from a window and gives an added intimacy to the scene. Pothast died in Laren on 1st February, 1966. His paintings continue to be very popular and can be found in private collections throughout the world. Time for Supper Signed Oil on Canvas 16 x 19 3/4 ins / 40.6 x 50.2 cms 29 Gabriel Deschamps Born 1919 Gabriel Deschamps was born in 1919 and studied at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts in Paris. From 1939 he was a State Art Professor and a member of the Paris Autumn Salon. He was best known for his evocative landscapes depicting the spectacular coastline of the South of France and he also painted in Provence where he had a house. His paintings perfectly capture the fresh, vibrant colours and the intense quality of light in that region. Deschamps exhibited in Paris, Algiers, Oran and Casablanca. Monaco Signed Oil on Canvas 23 5/8 x 36 1/4 ins / 60 x 92.1 cms 30 Laszlo Neogrady 1896 - 1962 Laszlo Neogrady was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1896. He was the son of the artist Antal Neogrady and he studied painting at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts under the artist Ede Ballo. From 1922 Laszlo Neogrady exhibited his work at the Hungarian Art Gallery. He specialised in painting naturalistic landscapes many of which depicted forest scenes in the snow. These works are highly sought after and can be found in collections throughout the world. The artist’s extensive use of impasto creates an almost three dimensional effect in these works. His use of light is usually dramatic and his landscapes are very atmospheric. The artist died on 27th August, 1962. The Winter Sun Signed Oil on Canvas 24 x 36 ins / 61 x 91.4 cms 31 Antoine Blanchard 1910 – 1988 Antoine Blanchard was born in a village near Blois on the banks of the River Loire in 1910. His father had an important joinery business and was well known in the area. Perhaps it was through watching his father carving wood and producing fine craftsmanship that the artistic spirit was kindled in the young Blanchard. Soon his parents were actively encouraging Antoine by sending him to Blois for drawing lessons. They realised that this would only give him the rudiments and to achieve a successful artistic career he would need expert guidance. For this reason he was sent to Rennes to attend classes at the School of Beaux Arts. He studied for three years and developed a remarkable drawing skill, which was to prove invaluable in later life. Sadly, Antoine Blanchard's artistic hopes were put aside when he had to take over the family joinery business left to him by his father. He painted occasionally for pleasure, but had to refuse many important commissions from art dealers as business pressures were so great. He eventually retired from business and moved to Paris, where he lived until his death. Antoine Blanchard took no interest in the aspects of modern life and always depicted the elegance of life in Paris in the early 1900s. Although he did not begin to paint for exhibition until he was 31, the desire to express himself through painting had occurred to him many years before. Clausade felt that, in addition to a thorough knowledge of his craft, he must experiment - following the example of his contemporaries Braque, Matisse and Picasso. After many years of trial and error he felt sufficiently confident to hold his first exhibition in Paris in 1943. The exhibition was a phenomenal success and as a result further shows were held during the following years in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York and Jordan. Pierre de Clausade exhibited regularly at the Société des Beaux Arts and became a member of the Salon d’Hiver. Then his fame spread abroad and his paintings entered many distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and Minneapolis Museums of Fine Art. Despite this success Clausade continued to develop his technique, striving for perfection and the satisfaction of his analytical nature. Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the Paris Salon in January 1953. He has also painted portraits, landscapes, aviation and military subjects and steam railways as well as being a respected author. After his three year training under the artist Robert Goodwin, David began to paint aviation subjects. In 1960 the Royal Air Force flew him to Kenya and asked him to paint the local wild life. His first painting was of a rhino, for which he charged £25! From then on he says “My career took off, and I never looked back”. In 1962 Shepherd had his first one-man exhibition at the Tryon gallery in London. David has always been passionate about elephants and steam locomotives for the same reasons; he likes anything big! After a sell-out exhibition of paintings in 1967 in New York he started collecting steam engines that were going to be scrapped. This led to his founding The East Somerset Railway, a registered charity which was opened in 1975. In 1976 David wrote his autobiography ‘The Man who Loves Giants’ and this was revised and updated in 1989. In 1985, ‘David Shepherd – The Man and His Paintings’ was published and this brought together in a single volume a fully representative selection of his work. In 1995 his two latest books, ‘David Shepherd, My Painting Life’ and ‘David Shepherd – Only One World’ were published. Unless he is travelling David is still painting avidly. He lives life at a dizzying pace giving all his energy to painting and conservation projects. He was brought up within the artistic community of Alcoy and this influence encouraged him to take up painting at the age of fourteen. At the age of eighteen he began his formal training in art and studied under the Spanish artist and teacher Mila Gomez in Alcoy from 1973-76. Mulio began painting professionally after he completed his schooling in 1978. Since this time he has regularly exhibited at galleries in Spain, France, the United Kingdom and the USA to critical acclaim. Mulio has an almost hyper-realist style of painting. He paints simple still life compositions of glass, fruit and liquid with exquisite lighting in uncomplicated surroundings. His paintings reflect a timeless serenity and are always carefully balanced in colour, shape and texture. He has dedicated his life to painting still life using the techniques of the Dutch Masters but with a more contemporary use of colour and content. He studied at the Joseph Wright Art School in Derby. By 1979 James was selling enough of his paintings to give up his job and become a professional artist. His interest in ships and the sea was growing and this took precedence over the wide variety of other subjects he had painted in the past. These marine works were strongly influenced by the great marine painters Thomas Somerscales and Montague Dawson. James sailed before the mast on the Sir Winston Churchill schooner belonging to the Sail Training Association in the 1990s. This was an exhilarating experience which provided him with much inspiration. Currently, nearly all James’ works are of marine subjects and they are often painted on a large scale in oil as he believes ‘the vast ocean is often best captured on a big canvas’. His largest commission to date has been a pair of canvases measuring 65 x 87 inches, each of Omani Dhows, which now hang in a fine palace. James has exhibited widely in England, including showing at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London.
