Charles Garabed Atamian
1842 - 1947
Charles Garabed Atamian was an Armenian painter and illustrator of landscape and marine
subjects. The majority of his works are oil paintings and he often depicted beach scenes,
especially children playing in the sand.
Atamian was born in Constantinople, but predominantly worked and exhibited in Paris.
He exhibited at La Nationale from 1913-42, at the Independent Gallery from 1938-45, and
he was made an Associate of La Nationale in 1927.
Atamian’s work has always been very popular and in high demand. He captures not only the
luminosity of wet, sun-drenched sand, but also the charm of children playing in the 1920s
and 1930s.

Marcel Dyf
1899 - 1985
Marcel Dyf was born in Paris on the 7th October, 1899. As a youth he was influenced by the
Impressionist and Post-Impressionist movements that he observed in Paris and Normandy,
where he spent his holidays.
He started a career in engineering but it was short lived and he was still in his early twenties
when he decided to become an artist. He moved to Arles in Provence where he bought a
studio and began zealously painting the inspirational landscapes that were new to him. Dyf
was entirely self-taught as an artist. He remained in Arles for thirteen years before returning
to Paris in 1935. After the war Dyf held exhibitions of his work in some of the major cities in
France. In 1950 he acquired a studio in Cannes where he met his wife Claudine in 1954.
A member of l'Ecole Français, Dyf's fame rapidly spread outside his native France and a
number of successful exhibitions of his work have been held in the United States of America
and Great Britain. He died on 16th September, 1985.

Edouard Léon Cortès
1882 - 1969
Cortès was born on 6th August, 1882 into a family of artists and artisans. His family
originated from Seville but came to France in 1855 for the Exposition Universelle and never
returned to Spain. They settled in Lagny which is about 20 miles east of Paris as there had
been an artistic community there for many years. Cortès lived there for most of his life,
leaving school at the age of 13 to enter his father’s studio where he learnt to paint.
In 1899 Cortès was admitted to the Salon and his work was praised by the international
press. Although Cortès painted some landscapes and other genres his main interest was that
of portraying the Paris of the Belle Epoque. This period lasted between 1880 and 1914 and
saw the glorious rise of art, music, theatre, literature and industry. The Parisians were able to
enjoy the fruits of the rebuilding of the city undertaken by Napoleon III and Haussmann.
In 1888 the ‘Figaro Illustré’ devoted a special issue to this ‘spectacle de la rue’ calling the
boulevards the ‘true theatre’ of Paris. Cortès painted the boulevards and the famous
monuments of Paris and delighted in capturing them with many different lighting effects,
weathers and viewpoints.

Albert Gabriel Rigolot
1862 - 1932
Albert Gabriel Rigolot was born in Paris on the 28th November, 1862. He studied and revered
the work of the Old Masters and they greatly influenced his own artistic development.
Rigolot's technique was measured and precise and he paid great attention to detail.
His naturalistic style and treatment of light is reminiscent of the Barbizon School - this is best
illustrated in his marvellous portrayals of sunlit ponds and rivers.
Rigolot travelled to Algeria, as was fashionable amongst artists in the late 19th century. He
painted many Oriental scenes and was consequently elected a member of the French Society
of Orientalists. He was a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1888, and from
1886 he exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon. In 1889 he was recommended for the Honours
List - he received a Médaille de Troisième Classe in 1891, a Médaille Deuxième Classe in 1892,
a Médaille d'Argent in 1900 and the Legion of Honour in 1901. This recognition from the
state illustrates Rigolot’s importance as a cultural figure at the time. His work epitomises
French taste and ideals of the period. He had a studio on Rue Singer in Paris, in the XVI
arrondissement. He died in Paris on the 25th April, 1932.

Harold Clayton
1896 - 1979
Harold Clayton was born in London in 1896. He came from an artistic family and was sent
to art school in Hackney at an early age. After graduating with distinction, he moved to
Harrow Art School and completed the course, once again, with distinction. From here he was
sent to Hornsey College of Art where he studied graphic design and commercial art graduating, as ever, with distinction (even though he was not particularly enamoured of this
art form). Finally, he went to St. Martins School of Art where he studied under the celebrated
Art Master Norman Jones.
Meticulous attention to detail and his love of the garden were the two predominant forces
which shaped his painting. Although he was a master of many media it is primarily for still
life flower paintings that he became famous. This is ironic as he completed relatively few
flower paintings in his life. He painted approximately one painting per month, which
accounts for both the scarcity of his still life paintings and their quality.

Carlton Alfred Smith
1853 - 1946
Carlton Smith was born in London in 1853. He was the son of a steel engraver and spent
some of his early years being educated in France. The artist also studied at the Slade School
in London and he initially worked as a lithographer before taking up painting.
Smith specialised in painting genre subjects and he excelled in both oils and watercolours.
From 1879, when he lived in London at Tudor Lodge, Albert Street, until 1904 he exhibited
29 paintings at the Royal Academy. Typical subjects were works such as ‘First Steps’,
‘Bedtime’ and ‘Christmas Eve’. He also exhibited at the Royal Institutes and was elected R.I.
in 1889. Carlton Smith married the artist Martha Sarah King and they lived in London and
Surrey. Between the years 1916 and 1923 the artist lived in India.
Works by Carlton Smith can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London,
Sunderland Art Gallery and the National Gallery of Melbourne.

Walter Wallor Caffyn
1845 - 1898
Caffyn specialised in painting landscapes, in particular harvesting and river scenes. He lived
for many years at Dorking in Surrey and he painted the local views there and in neighbouring
Sussex. He also made intermittent excursions to Yorkshire.
By the end of the 19th century, as a consequence of the Industrial Revolution, a large and
prosperous middle class had emerged in England. Many people had moved away from the
country into the city to further their business interests and they wanted paintings which
would remind them of their rural past. This created a huge demand for landscape paintings
and Caffyn and his contemporaries produced many paintings to satisfy this market. He
exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1876 and 1879 and also at Suffolk Street and the
Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
This scene is painted from the north bank of the River Wharfe looking towards the Old
Bridge, Ilkley, with All Saint’s Church and the Cow & Calf rocks in the background.
He painted using a fluid brush stroke and natural colours with touches of warm reds,
yellows and browns. In his work he frequently incorporates an impressive panoramic view
over distant landscape in the background whilst creating intimacy in the foreground with
quite detailed foliage and flowers. He often painted birds in his work; it is not unusual to
find a kingfisher hidden away somewhere or a moorhen skimming the water.

Horatio Henry Couldery
1832 - 1893
Horatio Henry Couldery was born in Lewisham, south London and was initially apprenticed
to a cabinet maker, before enrolling as a pupil at the Royal Academy in 1857, at the age of
twenty five. He was one of the best known Victorian painters of animals and was
predominantly known for his highly detailed portrayals of cats, although he was also a fine
painter of dog subjects. In common with several of his contemporaries, it is probable that
Couldery was influenced by the work of Sir Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), the most famous
19th century painter of dogs and animals who was a personal friend of Queen Victoria and
Prince Albert. Whilst Couldery's style differed from that of Landseer, his compositions share
the anecdotal nature of Landseer's work. Couldery lived in London and exhibited paintings at
the Royal Academy between 1861 and 1892. In his Academy Notes of 1875, the art critic
Ruskin commented upon Couldery's painting titled 'A Fascinating Tail' :”Quite the most skilful
piece of minute and Dureresque painting in the exhibition”. Couldery's work is highly
collected today not just because of his technical skill at capturing the texture of fur but also
because of the attention he paid to the expressions of his animal subjects.

Charles Euphraise Kuwasseg
1838 - 1904
Born in Draveil, Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg was the son of Austrian painter, Karl Joseph
Kuwasseg. Initially he trained and worked with his father but after a while he became a sailor
and travelled the world. On his return to France in 1883, he began his formal artistic training
and studied under Durand-Brager and d’Isabey.
Kuwasseg specialised in painting landscapes of the Breton and Normandy coast, seascapes
of the North Sea and scenes of the outskirts of Paris. He collaborated with the artist Poilpot
on a series of different landscapes. Kuwasseg exhibited at the Salons des Artistes Français
from early on in his career and won a 3rd class medal in 1892 and he eventually became a
professor of art.
Kuwasseg’s delicate yet confident style was highly valued during his lifetime and he was
regarded by his contemporaries as one of the finest artists of his genre. His paintings can be
found in the museums of Montreal, Pontoise, Rouen, Perigueux, Digne and La Rochelle.

Fritz Wagner
1896 - 1939
Wagner was born in Munich in 1896. He followed in the footsteps of the French artists
Meissonier and Adolphe Alexandre Lesrel who both painted subjects with a military theme.
The tender gaze adopted by many 19th century painters towards subjects of children was
also extended towards paintings of the older generation, most notably by artists from
Germany and Austria.
Whilst artists such as Lesrel concentrated on scenes of grandeur at court, with elegantly
dressed noblemen playing chess or attending musical recitals, other painters such as Wagner
concentrated on more nostalgic compositions with their characterful portrayals of card
playing or story telling, inevitably accompanied by ale and a pipe. Fritz Wagner developed his
own style and he always painted his subjects in an informal and relaxed atmosphere.
His palette was soft but he was a skilled draughtsman and his figures are well painted and
natural.

John Frederick Herring Jr.
1815 - 1907
John Frederick Herring, Jr. came from a family of sporting and animal artists, which included
his father, who was a very famous painter of sporting and animal subjects, his two brothers,
Benjamin and Charles, and his uncle, Benjamin, Sr. His mother (a member of the Society of
Lady Artists) was also a competent painter and exhibited genre scenes at the Royal Academy
from 1852 to 1866.
John was the first of three sons to help his successful father. He worked in both oil and
watercolour, but his oils are of greater interest and they have in the past often been confused
with those of his father. He exhibited extensively at the Royal Academy between 1863 and
1873 and also showed at the British Institute and the Suffolk Street Galleries. Herring married
the artist Kate Rolfe and spent the latter part of his life at Fulbourn near Cambridge

Narcisse-Virgile Diaz de la Peña
1807 - 1876
Diaz was born in Bordeaux on 25th August, 1807 to Spanish parents. At the age of ten he
became an orphan and misfortune dogged his early years.
At fifteen he entered the studios at Sèvres, working in the decoration of porcelain but he later
turned to painting. Turkish and Oriental scenes attracted him and he took to painting Eastern
figures dressed in richly coloured garments; he also spent much time at Barbizon painting
landscapes.
Around 1831 Díaz encountered Théodore Rousseau, for whom he possessed a great
veneration, despite the fact that Rousseau was four years his junior. At Fontainebleau Díaz
saw Rousseau painting his wonderful forest pictures, and was determined to paint in the
same way if possible. He observed his working methods and eventually became his friend.
Díaz exhibited many pictures at the Paris Salon between 1831 and 1859 and was decorated
in 1851. After 1871, his works became very fashionable and he became revered as a great
Barbizon painter. Diaz also painted some floral subjects. He was a friend of Renoir and his
painting style influenced Monticelli and Fantin-Latour, the great still life artist.
Diaz died on 18th November 1876 and in 1881 he posthumously received the Légion
d’Honneur. His flower paintings can be found in several museums including Grenoble,
Marseille, Leeds City Art Gallery, National Gallery of Scotland in Edinburgh and Glasgow
Art Gallery.

Edward Wilkins Waite
1854 - 1924
Edward Wilkins Waite was born in Leatherhead, Surrey on the 14th April, 1854. He was born
into an artistic tradition; his grandfather, William Watkin Waite, was a miniaturist, and his
father, the Reverend Edward Waite, was an amateur watercolour painter.
Waite was educated at Mansion House Grammar School, Leatherhead and, following a brief
visit to Canada in 1874, took up painting as his career. In 1878 he exhibited two pictures at
the Royal Academy in London and again two in 1880. Thereafter, with only eight breaks, he
exhibited at the Royal Academy every year until 1919. He also exhibited his work extensively
elsewhere and in 1893 he became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists. Several
museums have examples of his work including Bolton, Guildford, Northampton, Norwich and
Plymouth.

Frank Wootton was born in Milford in Hampshire on 30th July, 1914. He won a scholarship
to Eastbourne School of Art at the age of 14 and later travelled to Germany to paint. He then
went to London where he became a commercial artist. Wootton’s paintings show sensitivity
and make excellent use of light. His subjects are varied and he is highly regarded as a painter
of landscapes, equestrian subjects and aircraft.
He was the official R.A.F. artist for the period 1944-46 which led to many commissions,
including one from King Ibn Saud and B.O.A.C. As well as exhibiting in both England and
abroad Frank Wootton was the President of the Guild of Aviation Artists and author of “How

Campbell Archibald Mellon ROI, RBA
1878 - 1955
Campbell Mellon was born in Berkshire on the 16th of June 1878. He married and settled in
Nottingham in 1903 and it was only after his move here that he began to paint seriously. His
mentor was Carl Brenner who was the nephew of the famous 19th century landscape artist
B.W. Leader.
After the First World War Mellon moved, with his wife, to Gorleston in Norfolk. Here he met
the acclaimed artist Sir John Arnesby Brown, R.A. who was a great influence and inspiration
to him. He began exhibiting his landscapes at the Royal Academy in 1924 and the first work
to be shown was ‘Yarmouth – August Bank Holiday’. This work was a typical example of the
artist’s innovative style showing many tiny figures covering the beach. He continued to
exhibit there showing over 50 works during his lifetime. In 1938 Mellon was elected a
Member of the Royal Society of Oil Painters and in 1939 he became a Member of the Royal
Society of British Artists. He painted avidly until his death in Gorleston on 28th August, 1955.
His paintings are to be found in the public galleries of Bristol, Sheffield, Leeds and Great

Pierre de Clausade
1910 - 1975
Pierre de Clausade was born in Paris on the 15th April, 1910. Although he did not begin to
paint for exhibition until he was 31, the desire to express himself through painting had
occurred to him many years before. Clausade felt that, in addition to a thorough knowledge
of his craft, he must experiment - following the example of his contemporaries Braque,
Matisse and Picasso. After many years of trial and error he felt sufficiently confident to hold
his first exhibition in Paris in 1943. The exhibition was a phenomenal success and as a result
further shows were held during the following years in Paris, Rio de Janeiro, Boston, New York
and Jordan.
Pierre de Clausade exhibited regularly at the Société des Beaux Arts and became a member
of the Salon d’Hiver. Then his fame spread abroad and his paintings entered many
distinguished collections, including that of the Brazilian Ambassador and the Boston and
Minneapolis Museums of Fine Art. Despite this success Clausade continued to develop his
technique, striving for perfection and the satisfaction of his analytical nature.
Pierre de Clausade was awarded the great honour of the Medaille d'Argent by the jury of the
Paris Salon in January 1953.

Colin Burns
Born 1944
Colin Burns is a renowned painter of landscape, sporting art and natural history subjects.
Born in Norfolk, many of Colin’s paintings depict views of East Anglia, the beauty of which
has inspired so many fine artists from the 18th century to the present day. However, he is
equally adept at capturing the highlands of Scotland and many other beautiful unspoilt areas
of England and Europe. He has held seven one-man exhibitions in London and his work is
represented in many important private collections, both in Europe and America.

Janet Kenyon was born in 1959 in Bolton Lancashire. She studied at the Bolton College of Art
and Design and won the Laing Watercolour Competition, Northern Region whilst still a
student.
Since then she has won many other competitions such as the Royal Watercolour Society /
Sunday Times Cityscape Prize in 2009 and has held exhibitions in Salford, Bury and the Lowry
Art Gallery Manchester.
Her paintings have been compared to works by Atkinson Grimshaw, and she has described
how she works: ‘My distinctive style is achieved via a highly individual painting technique.
Combining cold water dyes with wax resist to create bold statements of texture, mood and
light. My watercolour painting 'Reflected Glory' is a window into the past shown by the
passing of time in the once grand building now neglected and derelict, reflecting and now
becoming part of the stark new structure overshadowing it and the ever watchful eyes
overlooking it.’

Gordon Beningfield
1936 - 1998
Gordon Beningfield was one of Britain's finest landscape and animal artists. His skill as a
landscape artist is seen in the beautiful pictures depicting the English Countryside of his
childhood. Scenes of corn stooks and horse-ploughed fields and his many wildlife paintings
were all subjects reflecting his life-long love of nature and his tireless campaigns for its
preservation. The artist began his career as an ecclesiastical artist, but decided to concentrate
on landscape and animal subjects. His paintings have been popularised and appreciated by
many people through his books - all eight have been published and six have reached the
Bestsellers List.
Gordon Beningfield made several television appearances, including the programmes; “In the
Country”, “One Man and his Dog”, “Look Stranger” and “In Deepest Britain”. There have
been three television documentaries on his life and work, and Gordon appeared as a guest
of Roy Plomley on “Desert Island Discs”. He was commissioned by the Post Office to produce
sets of stamps, which included “Butterflies” (1981) and “Insects” (1985). In 1986 Beningfield
was commissioned to paint a landscape for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
In 1990 Gordon Beningfield succeeded Sir Peter Scott as President of the British Butterfly
Conservation Society and he played an active role in both the Woodland Trust and the
Countryside Restoration Trust.

Andrew White
Born 1968
Andrew White was born in Louth, Lincolnshire in 1968. From an early age he showed a keen
interest and ability in painting. He attended the Slade School of Art in 1986 where he won
first prize for best traditional painting. Andrew has striven to re-establish confidence in
traditional painting and combines his own style with the techniques of the Old Masters and

James Brereton
Born 1954
James Brereton was born in 1954. He studied at the Joseph Wright Art School in Derby. By
1979 James was selling enough of his paintings to give up his job and become a professional
artist. His interest in ships and the sea was growing and this took precedence over the wide
variety of other subjects he had painted in the past. These marine works were strongly
influenced by the great marine painters Thomas Somerscales and Montague Dawson. James
sailed before the mast on the Sir Winston Churchill schooner belonging to the Sail Training
Association in the 1990s. This was an exhilarating experience which provided him with much
inspiration.
Currently, nearly all James’ works are of marine subjects and they are often painted on a large
scale in oil as he believes ‘the vast ocean is often best captured on a big canvas’. His largest
commission to date has been a pair of canvases measuring 65 x 87 inches, each of Omani
Dhows, which now hang in a fine palace. James has exhibited widely in England, including
showing at the Royal Society of Marine Artists in London.
