Yuletide Ball Raises Over $160,000 for Winthrop
Yuletide Ball Raises Over $160,000 for Winthrop-University Hospital PHOTOS BY RICHARD SLATTERY Each year during the holiday season, friends and supporters of Winthrop-University Hospital gather for the Yuletide Ball, an evening of dining, dancing and fundraising to benefit the Hospital’s Child Life Program. The 2010 Yuletide Ball, hosted by Garden City residents John and Liz Durand was a success, raising over $160,000 for the Hospital’s Child Life Program. The Yuletide Ball is a pivotal annual event that garners the community’s support for Winthrop’s Child Life Program through which specially trained child life specialists help children understand and cope with hospitalization. The staff use therapeutic play, arts and crafts, entertainment and other diversions to ensure that the hospital experience is as stress-free as possible for children and their families. Child life specialists are available in the Pediatric Emergency Unit, the Cancer Center for Kids, Pediatric Specialty Center and the Hospital’s Hagedorn Pediatric Inpatient Center. A vital program across the full spectrum of inpatient, outpatient and emergency services at Winthrop, Child Life is supported in its entirety by philanthropic contributions. ■ John F.
